I installed Handcent. Picked it as a my default program for messaging. Force closed and cleared data on the stock Message app. Everytime I get a text both Handcent and the stock Messages app are popping open. Anyway to disable the stock app for good?

Go into Messages, Menu > Settings > UNCHECK Received notifications, then you'll no longer get dual notifications, just Handcent notifications
Thanks. I did that but when I cleared the data it reset the settings. I should be good to go now.

Hi all. I've loved the info and resources from the site but finally ran into a problem I cant figure out on my own. I get a white envelope in my notification bar for every text message that says "New Notification: Unread Messages" that doesnt take me anywhere when I click it and disabling it under the stock sms app doesnt do anything. It randomly started popping up with my Handcent notification today and wont go away. It only goes away when I clean notifications but pops up again as a second icon when I get a new text. It even plays the ringtone.
Help?
Simple fix...you need to disable the notification for your stock messaging app..open up the stock htc messaging app and go to the settings and disable receive notification... You are now using handcent so you do not need both app notifying you of new messages.
Once you disable recv notification in the stock app you should be good to go.

Thank you for the quick reply.
I already did that option since I've had my Inc since launch and Handcent just as long. This is a recent issue even with the stock Messager app disabled
Sorry I found the culprit. It was the beautiful widgets SMS widget. I had no idea it affected SMS even if the widget wasnt applied
I am running SyndicateROM Frozen 1.0.2 (Malanga)
It is nothing short of awsome. I just noticed that I am recieving two of the same messages sent to (phone#)@messaging.sprintpcs.com
I think this is SMS ... (not sure) any ideas? Messages sent from another phone come through correctly.
I also use handcent and it is also showing a duplicate message.
Can the stock messaging be removed?
I did install Handcent via CW from a .zip file from a midNIGHT ROM extras folderand it works perfectly, but i wonder if it has something to do with it.
Go into the stock messenger app:
Goto menu/settings and uncheck
1. Notifications
2. Receive automatically
3. and any other boxes that are checked..
And no if you remove the stock messaging apps it will break your mms, from downloading/sending...
Anyone getting random texts from a 8737 number? I get them repeativly and look like this

These are from third-party sms apps. GO SMS or Handcent are the two main culprits. It has to do with a conflict between them, Sprint visual voicemail and the default messaging app.
If you use go or handcent, uncheck the option to disable other message notification (In GoSMS it is Settings|Advanced|Recieve Settings|Disable other message notification ) then reboot. This should take care of the problem.
If GO SMS... uninstall and reinstall... there are directions somewhere that fixed this for me.
Load the stock voicemail app and let it privision itself. Then wipe GoSMS data or uninstall/reinstall.
I learned to always load the voicemail app first whenever I change ROMs now

If you are receiving these texts, (usually from 9016) it has been found that third party messaging (ie go sms) installation is the culprit.
"In GoSMS, you don't have to go through the trouble of uninstalling then reinstalling. In the program, just click on "Settings" - "Advanced" - "Receive Settings" then make sure "Disable other message notification" is NOT checked."
(Thanks beezar)
Steps:
1. Uninstall your third party messaging application
2. Re-install your third party messaging application (DO NOT override your stock messaging notifications when installing)
3. Your stock messaging notifications should still be set to disabled. If not, navigate to stock messaging and disable notifications so you don't receive duplicates
(Thanks "bean")

Ill try this next time I flash. Thanks.
my pleasure. takes about 2 minutes to complete, and you'll actually get real voicemail notifications

Thanks. I'll update thread
Since it's a different problem I open this new topic and copy my message from the other one.
I flashed yesterday SlimKat and backed up my SMS with Super Backup; after I restored the SMS with Super Backup I got the notification on the Messages app that I have 163 new SMS (the number of restored SMS) and there's no way I can remove the notification.
I also disabled the app since I use Hangout but the notification is still there.
It only disappeared when I cleared data from settings, but if I open Messages the notification appear again, and also if (without opening the app) I restart the phone.
Of course reading the SMS won't change anything
What should I do?
Nobody?
