Question regarding the 4g coverage charge - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My question is that if you'r area does not have 4g does do you still have to pay the extra ten dollars for the 4g even tho there is no 4g ?

The $10 is for premium data and not 4G. So yes it's required even if you aren't in a 4G area.

oh wow that sucks. idk if i can get the evo now

This may be a good question...

If you don't have 4G in your area you don't pay the 4G $10/month premium. What if you are traveling and happen to pass a 4G area. Will the EVO be able to connect to 4G? What are your thoughts on this?
will never happen because you have to pay the 10 bucks a month
$10 fee is not for 4G data. Period.

the $10 charge is for the EVO, not for 4G. I'll pay it if it helps sprint subsidize expanding their 4g network.
It's still cheaper than paying for AT&T or other carriers.

[Q] No 4g coverage in my area

So I was thinking about getting the GS24G but I have no 4G coverage in my area. I know this could be considered the best phone on the market but would you pick it up if you have no 4G coverage? That's my deciding factor. This is a beast of a phone but I do not know if I want to be stuck with Sprint's 3G coverage.
I have the E4GT and don't get 4G. Thankfully Sprints network, regarding 3G isn't too bad where I live.

There is no 4G where I live (40 miles north of Los Angeles) but EVERYWHERE else there is and I have never really *had* to use 4G. 3G is plenty good.
Best. Phone. Ever. ET4G!

I'm in a 4G saturated area and I never have 4G, big deal. I wouldn't use it for browsing...it isn't that much faster for browsing. If I had a big download I would use it, it makes a giant difference for that...but I keep it off even if I could get it cuz my battery is far more important than 4G to me. Shaving 3 or 4 hours off of my battery to shave 1 or 2 seconds off of every page load just ain't worth it to me.
Sprint's 4G speed is not that great to me.In my area I get around 8mb with a MyTouch 4G and almost 20 on a Thunderbolt. Sprint's 3G gets me half a mb if I'm lucky. I def want the ET4G but I'm trying to weigh whether the phone is that much better than anything else to put up with the 3G speeds.
If any of you guys have a Photon. What do you prefer?

Ive had the photon, evo 3d, and now the epic touch
Photon had great reception for calls vs evo 3d... But I epic touch wins
Data in my area was faster with the photon but the epic.touch still beats the 3d...
And gps on.all three seems better than last years line up
I hated the.shape of the photon but loved the dedicated camera buttons on the 3d and.photon... But the epic touch is still faster better.screen and thinner..... I dunnk thats my first opinion of all three hope it helps...

I wouldn't come to Sprint just for a phone. The network sucks and gets worse every day. I left them last week.
What company did you go to. What phone did you get?
I've had AT&T and Sprint both for a while now. AT&T for work and Sprint for personal. I'm using a Captivate on AT&T and my account has unlimited data. Over the past few months I've been comparing the Captivate to the Epic around many different places in town and the Captivate always wins out for speed and reliability. Running CM7 with the i9000 modem the data is pretty fast and battery life is almost double what I was getting with the Epic. What prompted me to start considering this was the fact that Sprint started screwing people out of their annual upgrades back in April. They changed the criteria of what qualified you so barely any one qualified any more. Network coverage has been getting worse since they did that as well. So I'm using my work phone for personal use now with a google voice number to keep things separated. Dad ported out to Verizon and gets better coverage and call quality is so much better which I attribute to 50/50 phone and network. Wife is still on Sprint till the next best keyboard phone comes out. She'll probably ride out her Epic till it explodes then we'll figure it out.

Epic 4g on Metro PCS, Does the $40 unlimited plan work with using this phone?

I've never had metro pcs so i'm not sure how you transfer the epic 4g to it besides the flashing process which I looked up and can do. But as far as paying for service, would I pay for the $40 dollar unlimted data voice, text plan? or do i have to pay for the more expensive smartphone plans that are 4g LTE?
Does the Epic 4g actually get 4g signal through Metro PCS?
No response?
So nobody on the Epic 4g Forum has flashed their phone to Metro PCS? Help por favor...
No 4g through metro, yes though it will work. Text, voice and 1x data flashed correctly. 3g works too but good luck finding it. There is a thread btw.

[Q] 4g going away? or did I read this wrong?

So I've read on several threads about Spring shutting down the 4g WiMax portions of their towers and only having 2g plus new LTE transceivers installed.
Does that mean 4g is going away? i.e. replaced by 4g?
My question is this and some speculation as well..
I pay $10 per month for 4g... if it goes away, will Sprint have to stop charging me that fee if my 4g (Touch) is unable to receive data in that capacity?
Will this mean Sprint is about to push hard to upgrade everyone to LTE phones?
Or did I just completely misinterpret the whole issue.
Thanks in advance...
Wimax is clear network, Sprint is upgrading towers to lte. Existing wimax will work as usual for a few more years. Once lte is widespread upgrade to lte phone makes sense. Now its basically nowhere.
Yes, Wimax will be shut down, likely in 2013 or 2014. Also the $10/month is not for 4G, it is a premium data fee charged on all smartphones now.

>So I've read on several threads about Spring shutting down the 4g WiMax portions of their towers and only having 2g plus new LTE transceivers installed.
They are not rolling out any more 4G Wimax, it will continue to be around in places that have it. Not shutting 4G wimax off quite yet.
They ARE rolling out Network Vision upgrades that include supposedly faster 1x, 3g and LTE.
>Does that mean 4g is going away? i.e. replaced by 4g?
Eventually they will be turning off 4G wimax, but you'll have quite a few more years of it being available.
>I pay $10 per month for 4g... if it goes away, will Sprint have to stop charging me that fee if my 4g (Touch) is unable to receive data in that capacity?
You do NOT pay a 4G fee. You pay an enhanced data fee along with anyone else who has a smart phone. Everyone with a smart phone pays this with/without 4G Wimax, LTE, etc.
>Will this mean Sprint is about to push hard to upgrade everyone to LTE phones?
Yes and no.
LTE will be very limited for the near future. Will they push them? Probably as it's their newest phones and they stand to make more $ off you with them.
Believe wimax here till 2015 heck there still selling wimax 4g phones

I hate sprint. How fast is you're sprint data? Here pic of mine! GRR

I hate sprint. How fast is you're sprint data? Here pic of mine! GRR I used Cricket and Verizon on my Droid X the past. Verizon is like 4 time faster. Cricket is 3 time faster then my Epic 4g touch. Oh coverage is really bad too to eveery where I go. So how is you're experience and please tell us you're speed. Post it please. Even the speed of 4g. We have a place in Fresno with 4g but it's the same speed as 3g for the momment. Thanks.
Yeah. Sprint has somewhat good reception, but horrible Data Speeds. Mine is about 500KB higher on download. Tapatalk won't lemme upload.

I really don't want to pay the 250 cancellation fee plus 89 bucks for previous month. It will be one expensive cancellation. I would actually use cricket. Good network. Covarage is super good same as Verizon. I heard Cricket uses Verizon network and boost uses Sprint. Boost is bad here I don't know how can my friend still use boost. Is it worth to wait for 4g?
I agree completely sprint data speeds suck. Whats even worse for me is that sometime its faster in the building that I'm in than it is outside in the parking lot.:crying: This may be the fastest i have been all week.

You silly 3G'rs. I get between 500 to 2000 Kbps on 3G but I usually stick with the 4G which out of the box phone was getting 8 to 12 Mbps, more recently it was 4 but getting good 9 to 10 lately.

I used to get those numbers in TX with 4g peaking around 12 at my house. Now in Louisville 4g does not exist and 3g is awfully slow when not roaming.

Why are you guys complaining? I get 200kb-300kb, if the stars align and im lucky i get 500kb.

Seriously? You're complaining about >500 kbps speeds and 760kbps upload? when a majority of sprints network is sub 100 kbps dl/ sub 50 kbps upload?
Sprints stated average 3g speeds is 600 kbps - 1.4 mbps and you're almost in that average and you're complaining? If you got a beef with sprint then go talk to them, not spam here. We all know sprints legacy network is crap but they're upgrading via the network vision project so the future is bright.
So if you have a beef with sprint, go pay the etf and cancel your service and go back to Verizon. Don't complain to us. We've already gotten plenty of these "sprint service sucks" thread over the entire length of the life of this device on here.

This thread again?
The way I see it is if you don't like the network, fork up the contract ending fee and switch. I love Sprint because I have an amazing phone that I can practically do whatever I want to it, and I don't EVER have to worry going over. Even if I am on Wi-Fi most of the time, the price we pay for our service is great compared to others. Although they may have faster networks, we have the ability to fully enjoy the phone by development from our amazing devs. Usually when I want to do something on the phone that ISN'T a text or a call I don't want to be on the network anyways.
