Android Market Complaint - Desire General

I am happy to buy apps that I think are worth the money but I think it's totally unfair for google to have apps priced in Dollers / Euro's for UK people.
The reason being, if I were to purchase an app for say 99 Cents or $1.99 or Euros, I get charged £1.50 fee by the bank.
Surely google checkout can convert the price to the location of the phone / user and avoid extra charges on top?

You need to speak to your bank cos it sounds Like your being ripped off .. the 1.50 fee only normally applies to atm withdrawals . The most I've been charged for an app at 99c or $1 is around 4p extra think it should be standard so u need to take it up with ur bank !

I feel ya...... I have the same problem also, getting overcharged for apps because Google has first graders mathematics skills to convert money.

My bank deem the transactions as currency conversion as it's $ or Euro's to sterling.
I can't see why Google checkout cannot just sort it at their end.

I'd change your greedy bank mate! Mine does not charge for converting and the conversion rate should take into account costs.
Its a US company. Why shouldnt they charge in $?

They charge in pounds and euros and yen as well..

Yeah my bank does this too, its annoying to say the least.
I spoke to them today and they said there is nothing they could do.

My Google checkout account uses my Lloyds TSB credit card as the payment method and I'm not getting charged anything extra when I buy apps listed in USD.
Time to change your bank I reckon

Im with alliance and leicester no charge either

Interesting. I only use credit cards for online transactions, just to get that extra bit of cover. Actually another factor... my credit cards are the "Airmiles Duo", so one mastercard and one AMEX, and it's the AMEX card I generally use for Google Checkout. Don't know whether that's a factor

The developer choses the currency he wants, not Google. I really think you have a problem with your bank so it's not fair to blame Google.

Yeah but google could make it so that all apps are paid for in the currency of the consumer, like apple do on the app store.

So what banks are you guys with that don't charge you?
I am pretty sure I never got charged when I had a Maestro card.

Well I reactivated my LloydsTSB Mastercard and ordered something from overseas. No charge this time so I think I'm going to switch...

I use my Halifax Visa card and have never been charged for a transaction when paying for items in US Dollars, Euros, or £ Sterling.

This thread prompted me to check - just found out i've been charged £1.25 per transaction. This is with a natwest bank account

Odds are your problem is caused by you downloading those apps, since that's the number one way people get trojans on their phones.
Look, you paid at least $250 for your phone, and at least $70/month for service. I think you can afford a $0.99 app.

It was stated a few posts up that the person doesn't have a credit card. I agree that it would be nice for Google to enable buying apps by having them charged to your phone bill. Not everyone has access to a credit/debit card.
Just a note: you can use visa gift cards on the market with Google Checkout - I have. You have to register the card with the website so the name & address will be registered to the card, just like a debit card. The website is in the info that comes with the card. If you really wanted to buy an app, you could.
Every paid app should have a license check, in my opinion.
Open a free checking account and get a debit card? Pay for your apps please, it keeps android moving forward. I used to do the same thing as the OP, until I felt convicted by God not to so I deleted everything I had acquired and bought it all.

As others mentioned, go to walmart and buy a prepaid credit card. Load it with like $25, and attach it to your google account. You can use it to buy apps. Alot of apps are going to be installable as they start using googles market verification to make sure you purchased it.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
no, apps won't void your warranty, there is no way for sprint to check quickly and they wouldn't take the time to either, if the apps are to blame then sprint well say it was an app after they reset your phone to stock. then start over installing them and do it slowly so you can catch the one that gave you problems.
if your just worried that they are checking over the wireless and not in store then have no fear, they don't check for that

Yes, again, that doesnt matter. Get a prepaid credit card from walmart, or grow some balls and get your own bank account. STOP stealing apps for free, the dev's work very hard on these apps, and deserve to get paid for their work. Your excuse is just that, an excuse, because you are too lazy to tell your dad to screw off and get your own credit card, or pay for your OWN bill for pete's sake...

Harsh but true
+1
I surprised no one has stated the obvious lol. 99% of these apps have a free or 'light' counterpart; most of which usually are fully functional with ads.
Most kids(dkdude36 excluded for obvious reasons lol) don't NEED and ad free app, you saw free and went for it. Is what it is.
I will +1000 on the Google market needed to up their accessibility with pre-paid cards. I gave my 10yr old my Vibrant when I moved over to sprint and I wouldn't give her my account either. She's pretty smart but she would still buy random stuff not realizing it adds up. She is pretty happy about all her free apps though.
If you're under 18, kinda hard to open a bank account. But immensely simple to get a prepaid Visa or American Express gift card, next time you're at the mall or walmart (and if you're under 18, this will certainly be sooner rather than later ), just get one of those and exercise your freedom from your parents

scan credit cards on ur android phone

is that true? have you used it before? I have never heard of it before.. but that would be awesome
squareup.com I've used it for business and craigslist.
Here's a little bit cheaper option, as well.
http://gopayment.com/
Been using square (squareup.com) for over a year for my business and personal use. It works great. The swiping dongles are free, or $1, i don't remember which. I have a few that I keep in my car and business partner's car so we always have one available.
Once you have your account activated, you can even run cards without swiping them, although it is about a 1/2% higher fee.
Also, my customers love when they get to sign on my phone with their finger, and I email them a receipt with a picture and geolocation tag of where the transaction took place.
I'm waiting for an NFC wallet to pay to an NFC receiver....phone to phone transaction lol

You can buy a Square reader in places like the Apple Store, BestBuy, RadioShack, etc., for about $10. You'll have to pay tax, but the box includes a $10 credit for your account.
You can also request they send you one for free.
Works good. Have used it a few times and have had no issues.
Square is 2.75% flat.
Intuit Swipe appears to be 2.7%, but 3.7% if you manually enter it (type in the card number instead of swiping). They do have a "high volume" account that has a lower percentage rate, but a monthly fee.
A buddy of mine, who owns a cigar shop that I frequent, has square and he loves it. I've been able to watch the shop for him a few times and use it myself, and it's so simple to use.

I work for a credit card processor and those rates you guys are spewing are HUGE. They're double what you would pay simply by opening a processing acct and downloading the verifone payware mobile app from the market.
current interchange rate on visa/mc transactions is 1.54%. if you're paying 3.5, you're paying more than double the fees
I agree that the square thing is a cool device but you're really getting torn apart in fees

you guys that think the price for transaction is too high do realize you can simply charge 3% more for your transaction than you were going too to absorb the cost. Its just an alternative if the 3% is too much for you. Of course on larger ticketed items it may not be as easy but you can still inflate price some to cover fees

So when we purchase the phone at Bestbuy they give us a $50 gift card on top of the phone freedom gift card? I can't find anything on Bestbuy's website that says that. Already signed up for the phone freedom promotion. Would love 50 more dollars.
Think I'm going to jump on this deal.
I was trying to hold out for a 32gb phone over the 16 but I just got a 64 gb SD card as well. Considering at this point it would cost another $100 to get the extra 16 gb, it just doesn't make much sense to wait, IMO.
Also, I can find nothing strange about the Wirefly agreement other than you have 14 days to return it to them if you don't like it as opposed to taking it back to a Sprint store.
What says yous?

I don't see it on the website either, but it is the same promotion they've been offering on the Evo LTE. This is what they offered me in-store. Not sure about online sales.
When ahead and got this deal. I should get $50 cash back from my bank as well.
That puts me at $100 for the device. It's a blue 16GB version. But for $150 less than a white 32GB version, I can live with it.
Even at $50 difference between the 16 and 32 it's just not worth it when you consider I just got a brand new SanDisk 64GB card for $50.
Their web site says they are shipping tomorrow, but I highly doubt that.

I think you are talking about the fact that the phone needs to be connected on the same line for at least 6 months:
"By accepting the ISD, you agree to keep your account in good standing and keep your wireless plan and features as activated for at least 180 days.
You agree to repay $200 of this discount ($400 for smartphones, tablets, and netbooks) and authorize us to charge your credit card in repayment of this amount if, you signed up for a 2 year agreement and during the 181 days after your new equipment is activated, your carrier notifies us that the services you purchased have been suspended, disconnected, or deactivated, or if you return your purchase outside of the return and exchange provisions of our 14-day Satisfaction Guarantee.
Please note some of the reasons your carrier may notify us of a deactivation include if:
You transfer this equipment to another line of service after it is activated
You change your rate plan to a lower monthly service rate than was specifically required at the point of purchase
You deactivate texting/data features that were specifically required at the point of purchase
The new line of service activated with your order is used to replace a pre-existing account"

You don't need a credit card just a bank account, with a debit card, like you would use to pay for somthing in the shop.
Phone your bank and ask about it, or open an account

Just be careful which bank you go to as some give you a 'Maestro' card (Yorkshire Bank in my case) and these are not accepted by Google's Play store. I use my Barclays current account for that, the card has the 'Visa' sign on it which works fine.
The alternative is to purchase one of those pre-paid credit cards where you top them up at your local PayPoint shop and use them like a normal credit card (upto whatever balance you have put onto the card). Google "pre-paid credit card". Incidentally, PayPoint is a UK thing but I'm certain there will be equivalents world wide where you can top these cards up (for the benefit of any non-UK reading this).
In Australia we have Visa debit card, where you basically have a savings account which can utilise Visa payment system. Being Visa, I'd imagine it would be available in other countries.

You can't use a debit/Interac card from a bank (CIBC, BMO, RBC, TD, etc) which links directly to your normal bank account. You can get a prepaid card from places like Money Mart however, which work just like the PayPoint one mentioned above. It looks just like a normal Mastercard/Visa, but you have to "deposit" (load) money onto it at Money Mart, or through an online bill payment with your normal bank, before you can use it. I had one of these as well before I was old enough for a real credit card.
I'm sure you have a Money Mart near you, if you don't understand my explanation here then you can go in to their store and ask them about it. I'm pretty sure they still have them. I think some of the banks also have similar cards but I'm not sure which ones. You could also ask your bank though, just go in to a branch or call them, and ask if they offer Visa/Mastercard prepaid debit cards.

Google financing question

Just have a little confusion looking through the financing fine print.. do I HAVE to make 24 payments? Or can I pay it off early? Just thinking about next year's release and I don't wamt to still be paying off a phone when I'm ready for a new one
financing is for 24 months if you plan to change phone next year you will have to make remaining payment on the phone.
Yeah I get that I have to make the remaining payments... Perhaps I should've asked if I will have to pay the interest rate if I pay it off early... Because it doesn't mention that at all... It just says I need to make 24 monthly payments

If you can pay it off in 6 or 12 months [fine print] you don't pay any interest. Call customer service for Synchrony Financial if you have to.

there is no interest involved in the monthly payment so you don't have to worry about interest rate.

I had this exact same question, and called Google's finance partner. They said you can pay it off early, but have to do it either with a debit card or using a check online. There is no interest if you choose to make all 24 payments.

Good question! If that doesn't work, I'm wondering if maybe we/you can use the gift cards to pay off the lender?
Who is financing partner? Kept saying decline when I went to check out

Synchrony bank I think.. I'm not sure what their credit requirements are but I only got $1200 and my credit score is great...
Maybe I didn't her approved for full amount. Don't have much credit. But nothing bad. I was clicking on things so fast. Lol. Will have to can on this one. Didn't give an option to pay remaining balance if that's the case.

I only got approved for 900 so I had to get the 32 Gb XL
You should be able to pay this off early with no penalty. You can either make more than the minimum payment each month or just pay off the remaining balance next year when the new phone comes out. You only get charged interest if you don't pay it off in full within 24 months. After 24 months, you get charged interest beginning from the day the transaction posted. So basically pay it off before you hit month 25 and you'll be fine.

no - google play gift cards do not work for hardware.
I got approved for 1000. Allowing the same payments that you would make through a carrier for a flagship I think was a smart move. I know people are outraged by the price, but this isn't the Nexus line we have come to understand. Google is trying to make a flagship to compete with the likes of Sammy and apple. I hope they get apple to at least pay attention a little. If Google plays their cards right over the next few years they could hurt apples profits. And I think we could all appreciate that. I do think they should not tap out of the mid range market quite yet and maybe they aren't going to. I bet next year's pixels come in more of a range. They probably figured no one is going to upgrade from the 6P right now anyways.
I did google financing and when I log into Synchrony I see the pending charge. And well, for some reason on the google store I have no order history..no order confirmation email of the order..nothing but the order # I wrote down. Google says its google financing fault and they say its google stores fault. Google store told me to redo order and it errors out saying I have exceeded the limit of products to order lol. No one can give me an answer of where my order is haha. Wow what a mess!!

Yeah. I better call google. Too bad I missed out on the 2-3 week shipping. Maybe I was in the glitch

OK. Called google, got switched to financing. They upped my limit to $1,000.. Now. Out of stock. What crap. This was easy when I could pay cash for a new nexus every year.

Did you ever get one ordered? For my black 128 ordered last night. Oct 21 delivery. Funny thing is I accidentally charged my debit card. Had to cancel that one and order again.
