I am coming from a Samsung Moment with root, custom recovery, etc and I never had this many problems, what am I doing wrong or not understanding?
1. Why do I need to download or have an adb shell on my computer if I can install connectbot and do commands through the phone?
2.What is the proper method for rooting? My understanding is basically this:
A: Get Phone
B: Do not do the OTA update.
C: Download Toast's root (pc36img.zip)
D: Flash pc36img.zip
E: Done?
3. I can't get wireless tethering working using this method, and I have to download unrevoked's root to get it working.
But then again, is that even a root, or is it just for SU access?
4. How do I get the bug fixes from (1.32.651.6), and still maintain root? I downloaded the sprint ruu_1.32.651.6.exe provided in the forums and enjoyed having my phone not error and fc every 10 minutes, now I hear if I did that I just closed off toast's rooting.
5. Is there like an easy step by step instruction on how to make a custom recovery, nandroid backup, how to check for root, etc?
6. Did I kill my chances of root by installing and using ruu_1.32.651.6.exe?

There is no easy step by step method that I can find, sorry. A lot of threads and instructions assume that you have been using and flashing htc devices for a while. I'm coming from the moment and it's completely different.
I agree, it is confusing. I used toasts method and thought my phone was rooted until I tried Titanium Backup and it told me it couldn't get to root.
I figured I'd just wait til the rooting process is more stable. Sorry, I know this doesn't help

ok so mainly I am concerned because of all the different root methods out there. I am thinking I would like to perform toast's method with damage control rom.. maybe fresh.
should I be concerned that I have already performed the OTA update to 1.47.651.1 or only not to perform OTA updates after rooting?

what would be the best way to perform a back up on a non rooted phone? should I just spend for that backup pro in the market?

Just use unrevoked 3 it is by far the easiest
I thought unrevoked doesn't give you full root.
Regular unrevoked doesn't unrevoked 3 does but you need a computer for it
i recommend using this method with all instructions step by step make sure you read thoroughly and skip to the section for after ota couldnt attach link so copy paste it

unrevoked 3 seems to have some radio issues or something? can these be fixed with the radio flash like with the simple root? still leaning towards simple root...

I rooted my phone about a week ago... did unrevoked, simpleroot, and none of that #@#$ worked for me. Literally ran on 3 hours of sleep a few days in a row just trying to do them, and then I came across this thread:

20 minutes, first try, and boom, rooted, nand unlocked, etc. etc.. It's pretty much the ultimate guide. There are a lot of steps, but, they're all really short and simple. It takes more time to download the files and drivers than it does to root using this method. It's good stuff and I'd highly recommend it.

I'd like to get to a stock 2.2 ROM that's rooted, just to keep wifi tethering working and get some of the Froyo improvements, but don't want to lose camera functionality (3MP vs 8MP), break any of the radios, etc. along the way.
Unrecover3 installed the ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.1 recovery ROM, which enabled me to do a nandroid backup of my current environment.
My understanding is that from this point I need to NAND unlock and flash a rooted 2.2 ROM (please correct me if I'm wrong).
Is there a single comprehensive guide that will take me from 1.47.651.1 to 2.2, preserving ROOT, without any fancy ROM hacks other than the minimum required to keep wifi tethering working?
Sorry for the n00b questions; there are a LOT of guides and threads here and I just don't want to follow the wrong one and brick a new $500+ phone.

Simple Root
I don't know too much about unrevoked. I rooted using Simple Root. It is very easy. I would suggest you reroot using this method, which will give you nand unlocked.

After you gain root, you can flash a stock 2.2 ROM (search dev forum) I rooted a long time ago so I'm not sure if the newest version of Simple Root will update your radios (Read the thread/site, it may mention it). Search forums to find the latest radio verions and confirm that yours match.
After your have 2.2, I highly recommend that you flash netarchy's custom kernel, which will fix audio streaming, as well as significantly boost FPS, which will make your phone feel like a new phone. You can find that kernel here:

I'm a lost noob looking to do exactly what rjhollan was asking for. I followed your link to that thread but was lost immediately. I've been reading and searching to try and avoid asking dumb questions but I'm lost on this now. Any help appreciated. I was at least quick enough to deactivate OTA updates so I'm at 1.47....

Perhaps you used "unrEVOked3" not unrecover3...
unrEVOked3 will give you Root and NAND unlock.
I would suggest doing the unrEVOked forever now.
Look at your ROM Manager and and DOWNLOAD ROM in the program. I would suggest "Fresh".

1st Hi all and thanks for not bashing my lack of knowledge. I have done many searches and am now more confused than before.
I am comming from a droid X, I did the z4 root on it to get wifi tether working, it was on 2.2.1 I believe. Well it went very good, but I never got a push for an update. Got the new GN on verizon and tried to restore it back to stock, didn't work, so instead of selling it I gave it to my mom. Also, did this on a friends and he did get the update push and lost the root and superuser access.
This story is just so you know I am a complete noob. Other than following someones set by set on using Z4 I have really not done anything and have some questions on my new phone.
1. why would I want to unlock the bootloader?
2. after reading about the wifi hotspot by svtp do I need to root?
3. If i root and/or unlock the bootloader will this stop the updates from google (main reason I bought the phone)?
4. I am not into overclocking or modding but I want to be able to have wifi if I ever need it. That is the only thing I want.
Basically I am looking to unlock the wifi and still get all the google updates, is this possible? As of right now I think buying the svtp app is my best bet, I just don't want an unexpected bill showing up.

re #1: you need to unlock the bootloader to do pretty much anything non standard with your phone.
Since unlocking the bootloader wipes all data on the phone it's a good idea to do it early. You can leave it otherwise stock while you think about it, you can even relock it if you need to return the phone for some reason.
Neither unlocking nor rooting the phone will stop you getting the OTAs, it's custom roms that will do that. However most OTAs will stop your root access because they reset the permissions on your su files.

Just to add further to this... not only will custom ROMs stop you from getting OTA updates, having custom recovery (ClockworkMod) will prevent them from applying, even with the stock ROM. If using a stock ROM with custom recovery, you'll need to do the update manually. If you wait until you get the update notification, your phone should have downloaded the update to /cache. You can then use the custom recovery to apply the update. Alternatively, you can look on these forums for someone to post the URL to the OTA update zip file, download it, and flash it manually (this way you don't need to wait until your phone gets the update, you can download it and have it sooner).
In either case, you'll usually need to re-root, as stated. This is easier with a custom recovery, because you should just have to flash superuser immediately after flashing the update, before rebooting.
Until CM9 is stable, I'm running the stock ROM with ClockworkMod recovery. I can download the OTA updates manually and flash them with ClockworkMod then flash superuser and I'm good to go. Custom recovery makes it nice and easy to retain root, as well as the ability to do nandroid backups, etc.

I have read many topics, guides and post about rooting but more i read more confused i get, so i write here in order to get some assist from fellow desire Z owners.
Situation looks like this:
I have Desire Z with Android 2.3.3 and what i read till now, to root this OS the only possibility is to downgrade it in first place, but the downgrade will wipe out current data (or perhaps i'm wrong here?), which i want to avoid.
Then again i want to root my phone to use some app that requires it, and uninstall some unnecessary components, i'm not interested in flashing custom roms right now, so perhaps there is some way to grant such privileges via temp root without downgrading?
Any assistance will be appreciated.
You will need to downgrade to root, which will wipe all your data.

The downgrade guide does have a (very) temporary root, which will allow you to backup your apps and data. It would also allow whatever app you need to run, but not for very long, the system becomes unstable if you leave it exploited.

Ok, understand so follow-up questions:
1. let's say i will do anything till temp-root then do what i want, and then is there a way to close exploit?
2. Or if i will go on, do the full rom backup for example using titanium backup and then restore it after downgrade would it bring back my Andro to 2.3.3 or stay at Froyo?

ad 1. When having temp root you are limited with the things you can do and sometimes the phone does not behave as expected. Temp root does not mean S-OFF, so system partition might not be writeable.
You close the exploit be doing a full reboot of the phone.
ad 2. After downgrade and gaining S-OFF you can install every ROM that is available for your phone. There is a lot of Android 2.3.3 ROMs out there.
VirtuousRom provides some nice Sense ROMS.
The best known "Sense-less" ROM is CyanogenMod 7.1 / 7.2. CyanogenMod 9 is still tested and should soon be available.

Thank you guys for the answers, i did some reading about rooting, adb tutorials, even went through first part of downgrade to get temp-root but at this point i have other questions:
1. I tried to use Titanium Backup to backup my apps, but it don't see them, i searched for solution and it seems that it want's me to update SuperUser.apk but after i do TB dosen't see root anymore, and SuperUser tells that busybox version is wrong, is there any solution to fix it?
2. Is there a reverse guide for unroot and S-ON? i found some using RAGE but i don't know if it would work if i use guide for root?
3. Hboot, is this recommended as i read that this part is where is highest risk of brick?
4. Just for to satisify my curiousity, what will happen if after downgrade i would install OTA Update?

My friend wanted to root his phone on the go, so he downloaded King Root and it sort of worked(explained later) but for the app he wanted to use he didn't have proper root access, his SU manager(Some Asian language) gave that app permissions but it won't work because it kept asking for root access. That's when I took over, i downloaded SuperSU and when i went on it i needed it said SU Binary needs to be updated, I went OK and chose normal installation(Didn't have TWRP), it didn't work so i downloaded TWRP Manager and installed in, surprisingly I had root access on it. TWRP was installed successfully, so I went back to install SU Binary through TWRP installation, it keeps failing, IDK why...
So i'm gonna properly root his phone following this video YOUTUBE: /watch?v=FOaRQoJWWDw (I'm new so can't post links)
So since i'm gonna be rooting it again, do I need to flash stock ROM onto his phone?
All answers will be appreciated.
Is the bootloader unlocked?
I only see one recent report of kingroot v4 working on the M8, and it was on KitKat: http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/general/kingroot-rooting-app-t2913123/page4
For the most part, root apps don't work on HTC devices unless you unlock the bootloader. At which point, the root apps are pointless, as you can just install TWRP and flash SuperSU to root, or any other variety of methods.
Also, I don't recommend using the toolkit to root as suggested in the YouTube video. The toolkits are outdated, install obsolete versions of TWRP, which will cause other problems. If you are serious about rooting and modding the phone, the best way to go about that is to read and learn the proper way (not with root apps or toolkits). The "sticky" guide and FAQ threads at the top of this forum section, and top of the "General" M8 forum section are a good place to start.
