I know the hotspot option is part of the additional 30 bucks but what about tethering va the USB cable.
Is PDANet what I need to buy to get wired tethering to work, or is there a free app or registry hack available. I am new to Android so I don't know if there even is a registry involved with the O.S.

If you plan on rooting there are a ton of free options in the Market
And if you do not want to root you can still use PDAnet. Thats what we were doing until i rooted last night.
If PDANet was working why would you switch after rooting?

I am afraid of messing up the Android 2.2 push if I root. I used to flash the ROM on my Treo Pro all the time. Now I have to learn the terminology and basics all over again.

Because I wanted to ave the option and capability to do my hotspot if I am somwhere else and dont have a cable with me.
My first choice is always wired, but in the event I lose, forget or have a damaged cable I want the option to do wireless and to provide it to my Xbox 360 and other wireless devices.

how do you provide your xbox 360 with connection from your evo? please help me...
PDAnet would be free no additional charge from sprint. The extra $10 a month (is for unlimited no cap data) so they say. Not that it was capped before.

Hi,
I know that today there will be quite some luck new owners
When I read the specification from HTC:

It says:

Does the HTC Desire has default app for that already installed?

It would have to be installed, otherwise I would expect there to be a footnote saying that it is not included in the package.
If they were going to list every feature that was added by installing market apps, the list would be at least 10,000 lines long
With HTC Hero it was included and worked pretty well. So it'll be at Desire as well, as it's part of Sense.
tethering means using the phone's data plan to access the internet from the PC ... correct? and that does not mean the other way around?

Correct. It's an alternative to a mobile broadband USB dongle and much cheaper if you have an unlimited data plan.
would love wifi tethering, that would be awesome! i had it on a hacked rom of my G1, and that was excellent!
Ah thanks ... nice one if it is part of the HTC Sense package

Here is how it works,
Connect phone to PC with USB, The connect to a PC icon comes up, select Internet Sharing.
Simples
Can you also do it connecting by Bluetooth?
works great and quite fast.
Bubbles ( other poster used simples already )
You can only tether via USB at this point. Maybe when Desire gets proper root, we can use Wireless Tethering
and for mac?
will tethering be available on OS X? 10.6 (snow leopard)?
Evening all,
This may be a noddy question, but having just got my shiny new Desire and plugged it into my laptop for the first time and selected 'Internet sharing' it connects to the PC ok, but doesn't connect to the network on T-Mobile (UK).
Any ideas on how / if it's possible to sort this - or is this possibly one of the reasons release was delayed, so they could lock it down unless you've specifically subscribed to use your phone as a usb modem?
This always worked fine on my T-Mobile MDA IV/Touch Diamond, but I was using one of Shaks' ROMs....

I works fine on Ubuntu, so I don't see why it wouldn't work on OS X.

Did you receive yours with the first bath (Saturday) or more recently? I somehow doubt they would delay release because of that as they could simply push OTA later.
Did you try other computer?
Now got laptop online through Desire
Mine arrived on yesterday (Monday). Trying to connect to a laptop running Windows 7. If I can't get this to work it'll be a major headache for me, as I used to use my touch diamond once or twice a week to go online when I was out and about.

Right, it was a noobie mistake - always helps to install the HTC sync software and drivers off the SD Card supplied in the phone first!
This installs the relevant drivers into Windoze and, hey presto, after un-mounting the SD Card and reconnecting the device using the 'Internet sharing' option I got a stable network connection from phone to laptop.
Peace and harmony restored once more

I can confirm this works excellently and with no effort at all on Ubuntu.
Just plug in your device on the USB and set it to Internet Connecting Sharing. Ubuntu detects it immediately.
It must be this easy on Mac I imagine.
I would be interested to know whether all ROMs can do it though, I'm unbranded

Hello,
can you please let me know how you managed to get it working with Snow Leopard ?
When I switch to tethering mode, I see a new modem ( I select generic & interface but I need to enter a login & password ( and also an accesspoint name & CID ) in order to connect.
Thanks for your help.

Hi. I desire a Desire but can't find out if Internet connection sharing via Bluetooth to my laptop is possible? My HTC Diamond does it perfectly but the specifications on the Desire only mention it's possible via USB. I don't want to use wires.
Please could someone let me know please? Thanks!
Gary.
Try PDANet from the market. it let's you share your connection via Bluetooth or USB
Thanks for the reply and info. So the Desire doesn't natively support Bluetooth ICS and it will cost $20 to use a 3rd party tool to set up DUN instead of the more elegant PAN. Okay, I can go with that but I think it's a step backwards.

Woah...$20?! PdaNet has a free version that does everything you need.
The free version doesn't support SSL according to the PdaNet website, so online banking, shopping, etc, is out of bounds.
Yes, I noticed that this morning...there seems to be a good alternative, EasyTether, that is half that price.
Unfortunately EasyTether doesn't support BT yet but when it eventually does will only achieve ICS through DUN. I think because Android isn't as mature as WM6 the technology to do certain things isn't there yet. Perhaps it's just low down on the Android development schedule.
It's really a step back, but hey, the using of the cable has it's pros: the battery is charged while surfing
Digging this thread out, is there a program which allows you to do this the otherway round? Using your pc's internet connection via bluetooth to surf on your phone?
(Phone is XperiaX10)
Thanks

unless you're paying for it, not applicable until we get root.
hang in there, we'll get it
You could use a no-root tether that requires drivers like EasyTether, which is incidentally on sale at Amazon today for 4.99:

I'm just planning on waiting for root, though.

it works on windows PC, Create a dial up connection, pick bluetooth DUN as the modem. start buetooth DUN in PDA net on your phone and have your PC dial #777. unfortunately if you are trying to send to a tablet your SOL.
I'm gonna buy a Nexus 7 (2013) tomorrow, the Wi-Fi only model, and I'm pretty excited because I'm looking foward to making that my ultimate emulation machine and, of course, a good joystick is needed for that.
The thing is, I scavenged around google and this very forum, but I couldn't find anything that answers my question, and if it did, well it was about another tablet: is rooting really required for a Dualshock 3?
I'm a total noob in this, I know there is a full guide to rooting this device but I'd really prefer not to. I don't even need a custom rom, I'm perfectly fine with the default. I know there is an app in the Play Store but it requires rooting, and I read in some place that rooting is needed only if you want to connect it via bluetooth, in an other place it says not, in another video I see somebody just linking it with usb OTG and playing...
So how can I connect without rooting? Even if I have to keep it linked to the OTG, I just want to know the very basic way to use a Dualshock 3 on a default Nexus 7 (2013).
Thanks in advance.
PS I really don't need support for Android games, as I said I'll use it just for emulation. And I'm writing this in the accessories section because I saw another thread about the Dualshock 3 in the Accessories forum (of another tablet of course), is it ok?
The only app i've seen use it is sixaxis. It requires rooting as far as i know.
But i have to ask, why the hesitation to rooting to begin with?

Because I need this tablet for school too, I keep there my school books, so I'm paying half of it while my parents pay the other half. So, I can't really risk doing something that would remove my warranty. Of course, I can tell'em nothing about rooting, but what if I need to repair the tablet? I'm taking it to school everyday after all, that isn't exactly a church.
Then it seems like a long thing to do that I don't even need, and I always end up screwing something up during these things, so I don't wanna risk bricking it either.
Finally, I know I'd lose everything if I root, I know it's fresh out of shop, but I don't even want to bother about re-installing the basic things: I don't even know how much of that is removed anyway, so I don't certainly want to end up searching drivers or something.
This might work too, although I've no experience with it:
(I tried to post the link, but don't have enough posts to do so)
Go to the Play store and search on Sixaxis Enabler

That's the thing we were talking about, it requires rooting. It even says so in the description.
If you just use the PS3 controller connected to a OTG cable then you don't need to root. If you want to use it via bluetooth you need to root. There are quite a few all in one kits that can root your device for you easily but if you're not comfortable then use OTG cable or buy something like the Moga where you don't need to root.

Rooting only voids your warranty if ASUS finds out. Which they won't. Just use Wugs Toolkit or something to root it, then if you need repairs hook it up and return it to stock the same way(you can do this even without the screen being on if it is broken). Or as posted above use a wired XBOX 360/PS3 controller, and look lamer but stay stock
Thanks i bought the tablet. i have another question, what kind of otg is compatible? I saw some at the ludicrous price of ten euros, the shopkeeeper even said otg aren't compatible with tablet (so yeah he was pretty clueless)
Just simply use a OTG cable like this one: http://www.amazon.com/eForCity-Micr...UTF8&qid=1377771242&sr=8-3&keywords=otg+cable and connect your PS3 controller with the ps3 usb cord to it.

This is actually not what you are referring to, which is why I posted it. Straight from the description of Sixaxis Enabler:
Many Android devices support connecting PS3 DualShock 3/Sixaxis Controller natively in wired mode but don't work out of box, this app come to help. NO ROOT, NO PAIRING, all you need is an Android device which supports USB Host, and connection cable (USB OTG cable is needed if your device doesn't have built-in USB Host port).
I believe you were referring to the Sixaxis Controller app, which does require root, as the description says.

I mean that I hadn't disabled auto-correction yet. I meant Exit, lol.
And cobyman, not every android game supports gamepad. You can move the cursor in the home and the four lights are flashing? Then it's working, now you can only hope that the games you want support it.
Rooting is nothing more then and administrator account with admin privileges. I don't know why some people freak out about this stuff. Its reversible and you can always flash a stock image to go back to 100% stock.

Not possible.
Should be possible with a custom kernel integrating the right module for your Ethernet dongle.
