Hello.
I've got a rather anoying problem
I can't set up my device to automaticly choose to use wifi for programs that accesses the internet.
This causes the phone to enable an gprs connection every time i try to access the internet instead.
I have sucsessfully set ut the phone to connect to my wifi network and the communication works (skype runs)
In troubleshooting on HTC webpage you can find these instructions:
On your handset, 1. Click start > settings > connctions > connections > Advanced >Select Networks: Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using: "Internet".
My problem is that the option "internet" dosent exixt in the menu, can i have missed something in the setup?
Are you by nay chance using an O2 orbit? If so this is a 'feature' that O2 have introduced to make themselves richer. Check out the other posts on this subject

So what is the best way to get around it??? Another program to help us disable their "feature" and allow us to access the setting we need???

a message comes up at the top of the screen saying connecting : o2 Active
If you have wifi on as well they both appear in the connectivity list.
Cheers

I prefer wifi to GPRS

Hi,
First post here.
I experienced similar problems just like you. What I did was to ring up O2 and asked them to disable GPRS on my line because my XDA Orbit was defaulting to GPRS connection whenever I tried to connect to the Internet using WiFi. I told them that I was very unhappy about it. Needless to say, they promptly disabled it.
After this, I saw an X on the title bar, where the GPRS connection used to show up (next to the signal strength).
I no longer have the default GPRS connection whenever I try to access the Internet via WiFi. This means that I can now surf the Internet from my PDA without having to incur any data charge.

Well I have no problems, it all works as it should, the programs use the connection already established or connects to GPRS. If it is plugged in on USB it uses that. If you make a Wi-Fi connection it uses that. If you don't make either of those it connects to GPRS. But it won't look to make a Wi-Fi connection first. None of my devices have done that, not just the Orbit.

That is done on purpose as a security measure, you can not have two simultaneous connections (except if your using the phone as a modem when you can have USB & GPRS.)
Hi, Maskedmaraudore. Thanks for your answer. For me the problem isn't it: often I've both connections simultaneously (I supose, both are connected but only one is working and carrying out data, it's clair).
Problem is: with both active connections (wifi correctly started and GPRS available), but no sessions initiated, I run any program having an automatic connection to internet (explorer, outlook,...), and the device starts a GPRS connection without use the current, and able, wireless connection. Why I must pay with GPRS having my home wifi active???
I've the program "NO GPRS", that I found in this forum, I think, but not always I remember to use it: I only want that HTC choice wifi if it's available.
Thanks,
Hi,
I am new to Android (from winmo) and can't find any thread here to my problem. How to configure to let Desire connect to 3G automatically when the application I am using need to use the internet? For now, I need to manually connect to my 3G network before i use the internet.
Thanks.
You may want to check 'Wireless & networks' in Settings, then ensure Mobile Network is on (obviously) and check the option under Mobile networks and check that 'Enable always-on mobile data..' is also on.
Normally as you all know that , we can connect internet via phone's internet. It's called teethering.
The thing that i want is different. I want to learn how can i connect internet from mobile with the connection of my PC ?
Because sometimes , in some places there is no wireless connectin, only ethernet connection. So i want to use in this time.
I will appriciate for your comments
Search Google for an application called "Connectify" it will let you achieve what you want (i.e. reverse tethering).

Thank you i think this is what i want. I will check and let you know

I've been searchin for the same thing, i dont have a wireless router for home adsl. is there anyway to connect to the net with my desire via usb connection to pc..? ive got XP on my PC and connectivity on runs on Win7
I've just bought a defy, but i can't get tethering to work. When i select tethering in the options and connect to my pc i cannot connec to the internet as i cannot find the connection. On m old sony ericcson phone this could be done via the sony ericcson software but so far i have been unable to find anything like that for the defy.
I have a laptop with windows xp and a desktop with windows7.
what exacly are you trying.?
connecting the internet from your pc by your phone, or from your phone by pc.?
wifi tehering are actualy used to connect your pc/notebook to internet using the 3G Internet-Connection from the phone.
-> http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
the other way is, to create a adhoc network (share internet-connection) on your pc.
-> http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/setup/adhoc.mspx
hope it helps.
I use easytether, free from the market, to connect my debian laptop to the internet with no problems.

What im trying to do is connect my phone to a P.C and then use the Defy's 3G internet connection on my P.C.
Theres an option in the phones settings labelled as Internet tethering, this says "Share your phones Internet connection over USB & Bluetooth."
When ticked it says something about choosing your phone from a list of network services in your computers network settings.
and that is as far as i can get.
Does the computer in question have wi-fi?
Because, if so, the mobile hotspot functionality might be easier to implement.
Easytether works great for me. Get the app on market, works for unrooted too.

ok so today I bought an HTC wildfire S with an internet dataplan.
Presently have an IPAD 1 without the 3G option so needed to find a mobile phone that can tether with it. They recommended me this mobile as they said it needs to have the wifi hotspot option.
Can someone link me to some info on what is needed to be installed and setup to make it work with my IPAD.
Thanks to all.
Hi,
Your phone already have all it needs for tethering. Just go to setings>Wireless&networks > portable wi-fi hotspot setings and set all parameters you like (SSID name, security type -wep, wap, wap2 ans set a password). After go back to wireless & networks and activate portable wi-fi hotspot (before that you have to activate Mobile network, otherwise will be a wi-fi network without internet connexion) and voila... you should see the new created wi-fi netword with the SSID you chose on your Ipad wi-fi manager.
Good luck
Thanks....
felt stupid after I switched on for the first time my mobile and found the Wifi hotspot in the menu thought it was an app I had to download....
