Anyone got any ideas if/when Orange will release a ROM with the latest version. It sounds like a really awesome update.
BTW sorry if I'm being impatient but it looked like a lot of users on other networkshad received it lol

Debrand, update, unlock.
You know, I'm so tempted but I'm not brave enough to make a goldcard, could someone tell me the possibility of me bricking it via that method.

As long as you can connect to HTC Sync on your PC fine then there shouldn't be a problem. If you make the Goldcard wrong it won't let you update, it won't brick it.
Follow the instructions exactly and you can't go wrong
Yeah its pretty easy to make a goldcard, the only thing that brought a little sweat to my brow was getting the AndroidSDK software & my desire drivers talking but by following the instructions it went perfectly.
Once you have the goldcard in and the phone connected by USB, you just run the RUU exe and sit and wait, no chance of a brick (dunno maybe if you unplug the usb halfway through or something).
Rooting it is risky, debranding it isn't. Aside from the obvious issue that's just come up with having to unlock it
Awesome thanks for the replys. Am I right in thinking there's a little hex editing involved, is that tricky?

Cheers mate, I'll give Orange/HTC a few more days then I'll go through with it

I have a bricked MT4G and I discovered that if I remove the battery, hold Vol+ and Vol-, then connect USB, I get 5 vibe pulses and a Qualcomm MSM device detected in Windows.
I assume this is the serial loader? Any idea what we can use this for?
Copying over the radio firmware?
I tried to hold Vol+ and Vol- with no battery and then plugging in USB, however, nothing came up. Are you doing something different?
from the sound of it, thats the modem chipset. how exactly did you brick your phone?
I was trying to restore everything to stock so I could return it. Finally got a LCD-SO-C2 with a centered FFC. The power button is still mushy, but at least it works.
Undoing the super CID by restoring the part7backup.bin is what did it. I got a write error and then a message that the bin file had 2049 records instead of 2048. By the time this message showed up, the damage was done. No idea how that happened.
I am not too worried about it; from what I have read, several people have returned hacked and bricked devices without any trouble. They are not going to have much luck looking at the bootloader status at this rate.
Hopefully they rewrite the whole eMMC once they see it won't boot.
I just tested with the working device I have here, and it will not respond to this method. The phone must have to be in a bad state for it to work.
Dunno what that mode is, but I can do the same on mine.
Seems like the modem interface...
Not sure what is required to get the phone up in this mode. The one that this works on is a Taiwan phone, the other is Chinese. Other than the Taiwan phone having the Sharp screen, I don't know what else would be different.
Do you still have the engineering bootloader?
I bet that's it. I haven't done that to the new device yet, for obvious reasons.
I pretty much just run Cyanogen.
Well if you plan on flashing any roms it might be worth it for you to flash the engineering bootloader. It can help prevent perma bricking

WRONG.
For the hundredth time, VISIONary does nothing besides give you temproot and permroot and you have to run a script while temprooted in order to do the permroot. It does not do ANYTHING like flash the engineering bootloader. Think about it: the bootloader is device-specific, and VISIONary was originally built for the HTC Vision, aka T-mobile G2. If what you are suggesting is true, then it would be trying to flash a bootloader for the Vision on your Glacier, which surely can't be a good thing.
You have the engineering bootloader if you did either of the following:
1. Used the root.sh script to get S-OFF, such as by following the guide on theunlockr.com (although I've heard some people have used a version that doesn't flash the engineering bootloader).
2. You flashed it manually using terminal emulator. Instructions for this can be found in the gfree thread (and probably in other places).
If you don't have it yet, there's a download link and instructions in grankin's true permroot thread stickied at the top of this forum. Make sure you type that command properly, and do an md5sum on the hboot file to make sure you didn't get a bad download.
In any case, I too am curious about this discovery and welcome an explanation from someone in the know.

No actually RIGHT the visionary METHOD uses those steps you listed. I'm sorry if I didn't include the word 'method' but I've used it in posts plenty of times before and its been understood.

Hey man this may sound dumb but when it appears in the device list can you get adb to somehow recognize it?

This is still wrong because VISIONary is used regardless of whether you are doing the root.sh method or the gfree method. Of those two, only root.sh will flash the engineering bootloader; gfree will not. Your post is understood by people who already know what they're doing, but there are plenty of n00bs and non-technical people who are showing up on these forums, and posts like yours can cause confusion for them. For the sake of those who don't know all of this yet, it's worth clarifying which method you are talking about.
Posting to confirm that it worked with my device, although it said the drivers did not install properly.
I'm teaching a person how to root their EVO problem is last time I tried to root an EVO I couldn't get it to root.
My question is what is the easiest way to root this bad boy, he isn't the most tech savvy guy?
I'm pretty sure he was everything updated currently pure stock.
Should he use this http://unrevoked.com/recovery/ and will it automatically root it with no problems?
Thanks!!!
Yep, Unrevoked is the way to go. For it to work, you need to first install and then uninstall HTC Sync, then install the modified hboot drivers and then run Unrevoked. Should work just fine.

Unrevoked.com is the easiest way I've seen to root the Evo, requiring little technical knowledge (heck, if I can do it...). If you are on a Mac or Linux machine, it literally can't get much easier, but if you are on a PC it is still relatively simple. Just make sure you click "More Info" and follow the tutorial instructions they give you. If you aren't a fan of reading, there are about a million YouTube videos of varying quality that will walk you through the process of rooting your Evo with Unrevoked.
Thanks fella I'll tell you how it goes when he tells me aboot it
Make sure he knows which hardware version and which hboot he has. Otherwise you'll screw yourself. (Or him)

Doesn't matter...as of right this second...unrevoked does ANY evo out in the wild right now
I never installed HTC Sync either. Just boot the phone into first recovery. Attach it to PC. Then it shows the "no driver" in device manager, so install the proper hboot drivers from unrevoked site.
xda people, can you do me a favor? when the dinc 2 running 2.3.4 gets s-off via revolutionary or by some other program could someone simply reply to this thread to let me know it does? sorry to take up space like this but i dont have time to be constantly checking to see if it does. id appreciate it.
You should really get a Twitter account and follow developers. That's way more reliable. This thread will sink and get forgotten.

if i understand it right , you have Bootloader .98 now
there is a thread in xda on how to downgrade to bootloader .97 ( 2.3.3 ), and then gets s-off via revolutionary
there is 2 tutorials ( for the same person ) on YouTube for for ginger bread ( S-off Root and Unroot , the latest method ) ,and also the required software

i appreciate the offer. ill look into it and read it again. is it cool if i pm you if i run into issues?
Pls excuse the ignorance...
I've had my DZ (Bell) since release, I've done all the OTA updates etc. Other than being officially SIM unlocked it's not modded at all, nothing.
I recently moved on so now it's sitting around and I wanna "play" with it. Here's my issue...
There are sooooo many guides to achieve root, S-Off etc. Goldcards, Visionary, GFree... I am super confused.
Is there anyone out there that can point me to where to start and what is trusted to get this thing perma-root and S-Off.
2.3.3
Baseband - 12.57.60.25U_26.10.04.12_M
2.42.666.8
Thanks guys

Sorry about posting in a old post, but I tried to send a pm but I cant because Iam a new user..
I'am in the same situation that opensourcefan, i'm totally confused and I have the same version of software and android.
Well.. I read that you did this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912 but I can figure out what I have to do first. Downgrade? root? goldcard?
I just want to unlock my sim card and then delete some pre-installed apps (maybe after read a lot, try to install another ROM or something).
What is first??
Thanks !
EDIT: opensourcefan just answered me the pm (I didnt know that the pm was really sent, the system said that I need 10 post, but anyway. thanks!!)
I'm on holiday now and told a friend I could help him with his phone having some minor strange issues. Because I'm not familiar with this phone I didn't dare to put on a custom ROM. When I was busy investigating the possibilities of an upgrade the device offered a system upgrade. After finishing the process it started and after a while it restarts.
I was able to find a laptop on which I could run a downgrade script to 2.1. This script fails when it checks if the image is properly pushed to /sdcard. I then used "adb shell" to check this. There's no block device mounted to /sdcard. I then looked for the available devices in /dev/block and only saw 1 mmc device, the external SDcard.
Before trying this 2.1 downgrade I tried to download a stock firmware for this "Orange France" device, but all those links are dead ones.
At this moment I don't really know what's the best thing I could do. I already did a full wipe from the boot loader menu, but that didn't help either.
Can someone help me to escape from this embarrassing situation?
