wifi using WPA2 - Desire General

Hi everybody,
A question re., conecting my Desire to the WiFi on my computer. I am using WPA2 for security and the phone will not conect. Is there a fix for this problem, download etc?
the phone excepts WEP but I prefer the stronger protection of WPA2.
Any advice would be gratefully received.

Hi Paul,
To be honest from what i know your better off using WPA as apposed to WPA2 unless you use your WAN for corporate purposes, all your doing is weighing down the packets of data further with more encryption thus slowing your network in general. I've used WPA with mac/linux/windoze for years with no problems!

Paul, you might try changing the password and re-entering it. It's a pain to do it, but it's all I can think of. I'm using WPA2 with a strong password no problem. It's slow entering all the characters but you only have to do it once, assuming you set it up right. Modern computers, routers, and smart phones should have no problem handling WPA2 encryption. The latency out on the Internet is worse than any slowdown from locked-down WiFi. Your router is likely capable of far greater speeds than you are getting from your ISP, anyway.
I'm assuming you are having trouble connecting the Desire to your WiFi router, right? You said "connecting to your computer" in the question, but I think you are trying to connect to the WiFi hotspot in your house/office/whatever. If you are trying to connect directly between the Desire and your computer (tethering, for example) then that's something totally different.
Try and just reset the password on the router to something really simple and try that first. If it works, you probably typed something wrong or something simple like that. Go back once you get it working and choose a much stronger password then. Good luck.

yes i have the wpa2 and i use a very long password without problems...try forgetting it from settings and reentering its info

Thanks guys for your replys, I will try out your sugestions and get back to you.

XDA IIs Wifi and lockups

Does anyone have a problem with their wifi locking up their xda iis? I have bought a linksys router and am getting frequent lockups when using wifi. I am using the shipped O2 rom, thanks
I have no problem at all with Netgear router. Try changing the connection speed setting in the router to the "b" mode only. Hopefully this can solve your problem.
No problems here either I'm afraid. I'm using a Draytek Vigor 2600VG at home and at work there are two of us with XDA IIs using a Linksys BEFDSR41W wireless router and no problems there either.
Sorry! :-(
Try a hard reset (gulp!) and see if you still have problems (Without anything else installed that might be inteferring) otherwise might be a faulty unit perhaps.
--Neil
I second what xanth said, I had the problem where wifi would not turn on, so I hard reset and installed each software back individually the problem was Calligrapher 7.3 did not like being in Storage or Storage Card only in Main memory (go figure)

I use the XDA IIs on a variety of wireless networks and experience problems with an alarming regularity. The most annoying is the fact that the top bar seems to loose functionality, when using wireless!!
I will actually add that I do seem to have problem with the "range" of WiFi.
I need to do more testing, but it doesn't seem to be more than 20m or so before have communication issues/timing out :-( Will have to find out what our walls are made of!!!
I have problems connecting sometimes. I regularly use three routers, Draytek, Buffalo and Belkin. The only time that it locks up is when using skype. The skype problem is a known issue with no cure.

I am having a problem where my Siemens SX66 will loose connection to my Microsoft MN700 wireless AP on occasion. -It simply appears as if the Wifi radio shuts itself off.
Weird.....
Wifi has never worked for me. It simply doesn't work in the way nature intended.
The main problem (as far as I can tell) seems to be that it cannot get DNS or IP configuration settings from my router (Belkin 7630) automatically.
It can connect to my wireless network without any hassle, but that's about it. If I enter DNS and IP settings manually it works fine. But this is unworkable if you want to connect to another wireless network.
If I can't sort this out by next week I'm going to sell the unit on eBay. It's been nothing but a pain since I mistakenly bought it in December.
Wifi is a nightmare on this device! I'm going back to Nokia.
I am going to do a hard reset and test to see if i still get any freezes. Anyone know of any software i can use to backup my text messages?

Hi guys,
Haven't had too many issues with WiFi over here - standard O2 Asia ROM (with the BT 3500 update).
I'm running a Netgear WG602 @ home with 64bit WEP and a Dlink AP2100 @ work with WPA-PSK. No connectivity problems at either location, both DHCP. It does however take a few minutes to connect, but this is on the odd occasion.
The only frustrating thing with the WiFi is that I have to soft-reset often to turn Wi-Fi on - any ideas? Hopefully O2 will fix this in the next ROM. Other than that, I've had the Nokia 9500, P900/800 and this is by far the best device for the power user.
Just me 2c!
Cheers
cK
Wifi is on all the time on my device, sometimes when I switch the device on while within range of an AP it does not connect. Often switching wifi off and then onn again causes it to connect. If this does not work then I can often go into the network dialogue section, and see the network marked as 'availble' but not connected (why it sometimes does not auto connect I dont know). Tapping connect usually cures. If that does not work then I too need to soft reset.
I hope like you that they fix this cause its damned anoying. I will be interested to see what the Benq P50 is like when its released. I shall get one from expansys to test and ship it back within the 7 days.
Nigel
As for those having problems with specific access points. It is not nessesarily the fault of the blue angel. It seems to me that none of the manufacturers of wireless kit understand the term 'standard' they all seem to have their own take on it, which is why kit from different manufacturers refuses to talk to each other. I am of the opinion that they do it in purpose to lock you into using their client cards with their AP's !!
Try it with some non Belkin kit and see what happens.
Nigel
Well i tried a hard reset and didnt install any apps and tried connecting to wifi again and still got a lockup and loss of connectivity. Im going to swap the router for another make and see what happens
Swapped my linksys router for a D-Link and so far no problems after 2 days. so looks like my problem was my router.

XDA IIi and wifi
I just bought one of these and can't get it connected. I have a netgear wg602 access point. When I finally figured out how to set the IP manually (the 02 xda tech support said it can't be done - maybe they're right ;-)
I now have it saying it's connected, with right IP address. My DNS and gateway are set up for the wireless adapter in network adapters. The signal is average. The XDA says wifi is connected. The access point even says it's authenticated and associated - same as my other stations.
Only problem is, internet explorer doesn't find any web pages - says "The page you are looking for cannot be found" (works fine through GPRS)
Also, terminal services times out trying to connect to an internal IP address (to eliminate DNS as a problem)
So, anyone know how I troubleshoot network problems - it looks like a TCP/IP issue? Can't find ping or arp etc. I've also tried an IP address that I know works on the network.
thanks for any help
Dave
Hi
For ping, ipconfig and stuff, head to http://www.cam.com/windowsce.html
I have had multiple issues trying to get wifi working reliably. It still fails now, but there are a few tricks to get it working again. Most of my wifi issues have been due to regular use of three AP's [email protected] and [email protected] along with GPRS and VPN.
To start with I suggest setting all the ****e in connections (internet and home network to 'My ISP' then goto your wifi setup, network adapters, and tell it that the wireless card connects to the internet. Now, tap ok, and goto tools, network cards, tap the active connection (it must already be connected) and ensure that its set to internet.
Next soft reset the thing, and wait for it to connect to yr wifi. Now, use the ipconfig tool and ping tool from the above site to check that all is OK. Check that its got the default gateway right and a sensible LAN IP.
I have found on occasion that I can be connected via wifi, but that the device is still trying to talk using an old IP allocated by gprs which means nothing to my lan! IPconfig will show if all is OK.
Whoever wrote the whole of the networking system (and its terrible gui's) on windows mobile wants shooting. I usually have 2 VPN profiles setup under my work network. If I leave it set to that, and use wifi from my lan to connect to the internet all is fine. However if I try and access a local server, the damned thing starts trying to connect a vpn (it aint inteligent enough to work out that the IP I asked it to connect to is local).
I have been trying to find a setting for all this networking rubbish that allows me to do *everything* without reconfiguring each time - to no avail.
Another thing to note is that you cant send/receive MMS messages while wifi is connected (more stupidity), it tries to connect to the MMS server using the wifi connection, and the telco blocks it cause it wants to charge you for sending MMS over GPRS. Only solution is to disconnect wifi, send MMS then reconnect wifi!!!
Nigel
No problems with WiFi for me
Hmm I'm using an O2 Asia Rom as well.. and my wifi manager seems to automatically create "settings" for each AP it detects and I seem to have no problems connecting at all... been using WiFi around my house since the first day i got it..
i am using a Linksys Wireless 802.11b router..
btw I am new here.. finally able to register!
How's everybody doing?
Cannot turn off IEEE 802.1x
Has anyone had problems unchecking the 'IEEE 802.1x netwrok access control' checkbox???
I uncheck it, but then when I go back to the screen (click on the connection | then select 802.1x tab at the bottom) it has checked itself again!
The XDA IIs does not save the setting - it just keeps re checking itself 02 help have been no use - they sent me an instruction manual and it even says in one of the step 'uncheck IEEE check box'
Im am using a netgear wirelesss router and have also tried on a d-link
Sugestions - is anyone else having this problem??

Wi-Fi isn't working with WPA2

Hi to everybody, I am a fresh HTC S620 user.
After I bought it, I flashed ookba's rom, it's working great. But my wifi connection isn't working. "Cannot log on to the wireless network. This network requires a personal certificate to positively identify you.". This is the error message.
I searched the forum and also from google but I didn't find a working solution. My network is working with WPA2 protection.
Thanks for all the replies.
From the sounds of it, you need a certificate on your phone. I am not entirely sure how certificates may work on the phone, but google terms like "Windows Mobile Wifi Certificate" or the likes, even search on XDA. I am sure you will come up with something. Like wise, I will search a bit and see if I can find an answer.
Good Luck
Thanks Cyclonezephyrxz7 but I searched about 2 days with a lot of key words, and I tried a lot of ways, I can't solve the problem ):
Could you post some [safe enough to share] info about the wireless router you are using? Possibly some [safe enough to share] connection info.
I am not a WiFi guru or any sort, which is why I put in [safe enough to share], as I leave this to your own discretion. Obviously, don't post your MAC, IP, or data of that sort, as that is not safe to share on an open forum.
Knowing data about your router may help me find a solution for you.
Thank you
my modem has 802.11g wireless connection and using WPA2-AES for protection
and also I tried wi-fi without wpa2 protection, my HTC connects to the internet but with wpa2, it can't connect and also it hasn't wpa protection, only have wpa2 protection.
Thanks for replies.
Well, I did a little Google-searching. Are you using a PEAP connection? If so, refer to this link (here)
In any other case, I will continue to search for an answer, of sorts.
Good luck
change firmware of dsl modem, I have same problem with connection I tried all rom(WM5,WM6.1 WM6.5)but no change, I flashed my modem with different firmware version , now ı can connect wifi with WPA2.
try it may be it solved your problem
mourndare you can test your modem with this program, it is virtual wifi router program.
Program : http://htcexcalibur.blogspot.com/2010/01/turn-your-windows-7-laptop-into-wifi.html
thank you very much dear friends but i can't solve the problem yet

[Q] Wifi randomly disconnecting

An issue I am having is:
I will connect my phone to wifi it will connect fine and tell me I am connected.
I could then later on go into the market and try download something I will have wifi bars but the item will pause download. I then come back out to check if my wifi is still connected and it will say authenticating but doesnt change so I then turn the wifi off and back on. It connects again this time when I go back into the market to download something it works fine.
Anyone else have this issue?
Hey guys still having this issue where my wifi looks like its connected but when i go to settings->wireless&networks-> wifi status will say authenticating with wifi.
It only happens me in my house with my router which is a zyxel router doesn't seem to happen in my parents house.
Is there anything I can do to stop this as its really annoying?

Try changing the authentication type of your router's settings. And if you use MAC security for your wifi, you can disable it.

Well it depends on your router but generally it's under Wireless->Security settings. Mine is with WPA-Personal authentication and TKIP algorithm.
Ok just to update this I have resolved the issue of my zyxel router by changing the security type from wpa-psk to wep.
Wep isnt as secure as wpa-psk but it suites consoles and portable devices better. Since I have changed I havnt been disconnected from the wireless.
I would say that your router has a problem with wpa authentication, I wouldn't recommend a wep authentication. If your wifi signal can be detected from the road where you live I could hack into it in about 10min and many other people plus there a custom antennas that can be made to detect signals and get better range etc.
I recommend you get a better router, something from netgear or belkin would do the job to keep your wifi safe and use wpa+wpa2 together with tkip+aes encryption.

Help... Wifi Mac Address Changes On Every Reboot

Hey fellow GN users!
I seem to be having a problem with my wifi mac address changing every time I reboot... I was wondering if this is a hardware or a software problem? I have mac address filtering set on my router so it would be convenient if the mac address didn't change... I'm still on my first week with the phone and I want to make sure everything works before my 14 day period is over. Is anyone else having this problem? Anyone know a fix if they are having the problem? Any help would be most appreciated! Thanks!
Galaxy Nexus (LTE)

Welcome to the club!
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=23330
From my support call to Samsung, this is apparently a software issue, but I'm not sure I believe that 100%. For me, I switched my home wifi around to use WPA-2 with a ridiculously long password and no MAC filter to make me no longer care, but that's just me I'm secretly hoping to be the guy that can tell Google "hey - you fixed it!!", probably why I don't push harder to exchange my phone.
Please add a comment/star to my Google Code issue if you don't mind; the more people that chime in the better off we will be. I truly believe that a lot of GNs have this problem since it's not something that most people would notice.
If getting rid of your MAC filter is impossible, you should really consider exchanging your device, I imagine it will be quite a while (if ever) for this to get fixed. Call me a pessimist if you must.
Odd, isn't a MAC address suppose to be hard flashed to the radio?
Mine started changing the Mac address today after rooting. The last month with it running stock, no issue. Hmmm, used the Galaxy Nexus tool kit for rooting.
MAC address filtering is not really a good security measure. It is very easy for someone to see the MAC addresses connected to a particular WAP and clone one of them.
You are much more secure using WPA2 with a decently long password.
I just started experiencing the problem yesterday. My phone DID have a 2c:44 address and I switched roms pretty frequently. I flashed an update to the Codename rom that I had been using for a while, and I wasn't able to connect to my router. Knowing what I thought I knew about MAC addresses I didnt think about it, i rebooted all sortsa crap, then thought what the hell check the mac filter list, and sure enough mine had changed, and now i'm sporting one of the dreaded 00:90:4c addresses and the last few characters change every reboot... I am not a happy camper.
I understand how it isn't an amazing security option, but in a small apartment building in the sticks in PA I know my neighbors have no idea how to get around it. WPA2 uses up too much bandwidth overhead for streaming 1080p over wifi. That's why I dont use it and use MAC filtering.

It is not a bandwidth overhead but a resource hog. But I get your jist. I save all my HD streaming for wired.
Have you done an EFS partition backup?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I didnt know what and EFS partition was until I just googled it and I've been rooting / rom'ing phones and devices (5 different phones and 2 tablets) for the last 2 years and never once heard of it.. that being said i did a nandroid backup and restoring it did not help
I'm going to try Odin flashing back, I read somewhere it fixes IMEI / EFS corruption, heres hoping it works for wlan mac addresses. Only place I found an Odin image of it was from megaupload so it will take a long time to get it...
Edit: if you clicked on the link for the firmware i posted, do NOT click it, i think that was GSM
Well that was a bust, odining back didn't help... I dont want to risk swapping the phone out considering i put one of those zagg screen protectors on it for a phone that is going to have the same problem... I am concerned because of the fact that i did have a valid sticking mac address, and all of a sudden it just stopped which leads me to believe it is totally software related.

Was just about to say it. +1000. There is nothing about MAC address filtering that is secure. Anyone can spoof the MAC address, and its easy to intercept them when in range.
Use a normal security protocol and you'll be better off all around. MAC filtering is just a hassle anyways.

Thank you for your concerns however as I said before I dont need crazy security, I just had to deal with rednecks connecting to my router using torrents a couple times. Since that has happened and i enabled mac filtering I haven't had any problems (i would know because my internet bandwidth would go to crap)
Actually setting up WPA2 is more of a hassle than logging into a router, clicking on one link and typing in the mac address rather than somehow finding a way to configure my network to handle the bandwidth with WPA2, which I have tried, but even with a dual band n wireless ethernet bridge with gigabit out to a gigabit switch doesnt do the trick, disable wpa2 all of a sudden all my video stuttering woes go away.
That is at a personal level, at work I have MAC filtering not to connect as a security measure but my ip address is assigned based on it, and well it's much more complicated than at home... please if you are going to post something in this thread try to be helpful.

Again, it has nothing to do with bandwidth. It has everything to do with the devices ability to encrypt and decrypt packets at full speeds, which obviously your device cannot do. You might want to step up to something a little more powerful.
I can do 1080p streaming on a G network with WPA2 enabled. The difference between my setup and yours? I am using an enterprise grade WAP (Cisco 1242). It has no problems whatsoever doing the encryption and decryption at the full wireless speed.
And I think you mentioned you were located in Central PA, and all you had to protect from was hicks. Well, I am one of those hicks (Live in Central PA as well) and I LOVE cracking in to WAPs
I am having this issue now. any solutions?

WPA2 isn't crazy security. I wouldn't recommend anybody running anything less than WPA2 with 256 bit AES encryption. If you can't run that I recommend upgrading your hardware.
so... i just started having this issue after my battery died last night now today I have a different MAC..
This has to be fixed at kernel level or maybe a script to set the mac at bootup time can be used. really annoying and stupid

Galaxy W Wifi Drop Problem...

Hi everyone,
I'm using Galaxy W with stock ROM (XXLA2/rooted) and ZyXel (P-660HW-T1 v3) wireless router. I can connect and use wireless home network for a period of time but after a while WiFi drops and then reconnects. This repeats continuously...
I've tried switching WPA2 to WPA also tried using MAC filter only (without WiFi pass), but all of them were useless... Changing from dynamic to static IP also did not worked
I tried a couple of Market apps to fix WiFi issue, but they did not help me either...
Do u have any idea what may cause my WiFi drop problem?
I need your help...
Thanks...
Have you the latest firmaware on your Zyxel?
And is your phone only having problems with this router or all access points? (just to determe the problem eg your phone or your router)
Edit: Try to set the "ReAuthentication" setting higher (9000), i think that solves your problem!
Yes my ZyXel firmware is up to date.
I could not have chance to test my phone with other access points
By the way where can I find the "ReAuthentication Setting" ?

Don't know .... i did read your user manual, but didnt pay attention where this settings is....
You have to try to find it yourself
Ok, i found it and set to 9999 max value
I'm testing it, i hope i do not get any more drop
Thanks for your interest...
Well you can get a drop, but its only every 2.7 hour, if thats not ok, you could try to set it to 0 maybe then re authentication is fully off.
Setting the value to 0 sounds good Then it will become something like WEP i think...
Anyway I'll try also this...
Thanks...
please don't use wep keys as they are awful weak
stay with wpa or wpa2
Actually I do not wanna use WEP but since it is static maybe it will help me get a more stable wireless connection. And when i tried WEP for the first time, I noticed signal quality got a abit stronger Is it logical or strange?
I know WPA/WPA2 is more safe but I wonder if using WEP with MAC filter is equivalent to WPA in terms of security issue?

It isn't. Have a read about the differences:
WEP used a 40-bit or 128-bit encryption key that must be manually entered on wireless access points and devices and does not change. TKIP employs a per-packet key, meaning that it dynamically generates a new 128-bit key for each packet and thus prevents the types of attacks that compromised WEP.[3]

(From the Wikipedia Wi-Fi_Protected_Access page - I can't paste the link as I'm a new forum user)
I see...
I'd better keep using WPA/WPA2.
Thanks for the explanation...

MAC filter security is the best, and even much better than WPA or WPA2!
The advantage is that MAC id's are like a footprint for a network card, like a DNA.
The disadvantage is that every device you want to add you have to do it manually.
Good luck!
my phone does drop wifi sometimes too.

Sorry dude, but i can't let you say such a thing.
MAC filter can improve security with encryption but cannot replace WPA/WPA2.
I can crack your mac filtering with WEP security within 10 minutes or less. Just sniffing promiscious packets from your router and identifying your network device MAC address.
Many tools exist to easy change any MAC address from network devices. So no, mac address is not a DNA, because it can be changed easily.
So, the best is still WPA2 Entreprise (but it needs Radius Server) or WPA2 personnal with AES encryption. And MAC filtering is good idea, but not alone !.
Thanx mate.....I was just gonna post a link about MAC spoofing and how insecure MAC filtering is.
Here it is anyway:
