USB not working & excessive battery drain - anybody's found solution? - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Hi all, I've searched the forum thoroughly but didn't find an answer:
Two months ago I was hit by the above problem, too - no USB (nor in bootloader) & discharge current from 190 (everything off) upto 400+ mAh. I tried to swap cables, PCs, ROMs (from Energy to stockROM, forth and back)... nothing helped... SERIAL only.
Of course I cant' get the orig SPL back so sending to warranty repair isn't too probable (if I don't want to pay a new phone's price for just swapping the MB )
I hesitate to accept that it is a SW problem (that the NRGZ's ROM rewrited something or caused a HW fault). So, hasn't anybody found a solution? Isn't it possible somehow to revert the bootloader without USB? Or, could it be really a _faulty_USB_connector_ and I've got a bad luck simply??
Thanks, Michael

Take a magnifying glass and check the USB port. Some people have found that some of the pins get bent over. If so, you may be able to carefully bend it back straight. Having a bent pin might explain the power drain as well as no USB.

3 weeks ago, my usb wasnt working. I couldnt connect with pc, but charging worked.
I have sent the device to htc, and they replaced the motherboard..

Yes you're probably right that that could be the best solution.
Nevertheless, in this case I can't revert the bootloader (SSPL) so I would have to pay the new MB (more than half a new TP2's price)

You can't? There are instructions on the ROM burning forum for returning it to stock SPL.

Is Oli/Nex Hard-Spl dangerous?--> don't think so but have a look

As for me it is not. I'm currently using Oli/Nex 1.93 unsigned.
Referring to the repair service i have send my diamond in, because of a broken USB port, it is a "illegal" piece of software and warranty repair has been rejected. They'd like to charge € 300.- for mainboard replacement.
Well, i have never heard before of a broken USB Port because of Hard-SPL and i even don't believe that Hard-SPL is capable of doing this.
My USB Port stopped working after plugging my diamond to my PC (long time after i had installed Hard-SPL). Charging still works but no way to get it recognized by ActiveSync or as harddisk.
My Assumption is the repair service is talking crap - they probably didn't even check the hardware and pointed their fingers at Hard-SPL after discovering it.
I'd like some comment, from the devs maybe, that Hard-SPL is harmless and not even capable of bricking the USB Port.
thanks,
nervdoc
it is done what is done, but for other people please restore the original spl before sending it to the service as a matter of fact restore the orig. rom also.
as for your question, what rom exactly did you have, cause some people expirience the async problem but normaly it gets solved by the rom shef.
No...that hardware malfunction has not been caused by Hard-SPL.
But they are talking about charging you for repair because they just had a look at the bootloader screen, noticed that you have "void-ed" the warranty by modifying the SPL...and this has been mentioned as a caveat so many times in the relevant threads, and if you could have cared to read properly before installing it, you would have known how to revert back to, or load the stock SPL(and stock Radio and ROM, if you flashed a different one) back before sending your device for warranty. This way the device would have been in stock conditions and they would have repaired it for free.
Hard Luck buddy, but that's the way it is...sad but true.

a known problem on HTC devices for the USB board to blow (leading to lack of being able to sync, but still charge) is charging in the car.
if the Diamond is plugged into a charger while the car is started, a hight current can be passed to the diamond resulting in the USB or Mainboard blowing.
I was running my providers original software but unfortunately i was not able to return to original SPL without a working usb port.
Is it possible to revert back to original SPL without working USB port? Didn't find anything besides flashing from internal storage - whitch didn't work for hard-SPL.
If i had really voided the terms of guarantee is questionable as there is no point which says "don't upload unofficial software"
warranty is excluded if (translated from german):
Damage, in particular dark blotch, lines or cracks on the display.
Damage due to fall, violent pressure etc.
Damage due to water.
Damage due to inappropriate handling.
Damage due to not authorized accessories.
Point 4 could apply though O2 (my provider) offers also firmware/software upgrades.
And as stated before (Hard-)SPL is not able to cause this damage.
Nevertheless i'll try to object to their refusal.

Hi nervdoc,
let them answer, where exactly it is stated (in the german warranty agreement), that the warranty is void after flashing certain software products.
If they cannot point this out, take legal action.

Was kind of a fight but a least I have succeeded. You can even start customruu.exe to flash.
Works flawlessly until entering the bootloader.

lol, i bet.
yeh, that is the problem, needs to have a USB connection, as a bluetooth connection is not supported by the BIOS (or whatever the bootloader thingy is).
Of course bluetooth is supported by SPL.
You can even route the bluetooth connection once you're in the bootloader.
But for that you need to change the port settings (available via console only).
Anyway, yes, Hard-SPL could have bricked the usb port.
Why ?
The usb init itself might have changed between the mfg version (old version) and newer spl versions. So, newer hardware leads to newer voltage settings / calibration.
But honestly ... I doubt that the usb port was bricked by just hard-spl.
In fact, most usb ports are bricked by sticking the usb cable first into the pc and then into the phone ... either due to electrostatic issues or due to overvoltage (unstable usb connection).
So imho a bricked usb port is 99% an hardware issue and no software issue if the software was intended for the phone.

Exactly this happened. Phone was on and after connecting it to pc the screen went dark.
Had to remove battery and put it back in to turn my diamond on again.
Another thing is to make this clear to O2's repair service
Hi
try change the spl without USB like the rom or radio file transfer though bluetooth file to internal storage change name for DIAMIMG and reset phone keep pressing volup button and back button then when phone recognized file press power button to start updating

they've been told to do this, HTC have sent a document round to RMAs about it.
I would contact them back and tell them that they're talking bull**** and they can either prove that the SPL is causing the hardware defect (in line with EU law requiring the manufacturer to prove your modification breaks the device) or shut up and repair it.

Already tried this. As far as i know HardSPL is write protected.
At least it didn't work. The update process went well but checking bootloader afterwards it still showed olinex 1.93.
@olipro
Is it possible to restore stock SPL from Internal Storage though HardSPL is installed?
If yes, are there any special tricks to perform. As stated above i already tried without success.
Unfortunately I don't have a good idea for you. But, I had a motherboard on my PC which simply caramelized anything I conected to the front USB console: A Sony camera, A bluetooth adapter, a memory stick, and ALMOST an ipod of a friend which costs 300 euros...Fortunately we conected all the other things before and we realized the problem with the motherboard.
So, it might be something simular in your case, maybe...Check with something cheap, with an old memory stick? Then you will know: don't connect anything...
Just an idea to prevent further accidents....
For 300€... maybe better to wait, save another 300 and buy a blackstone?
Or...save and buy a new diamond? For 300 you can buy on e-bay easily... a bit risky...
I have the unassembling manual of the HTC, I downloaded it from somewhere on this forum, have a look. if you want I can send it to you by email. Changing the motherboard looks easy! The only thing you can do is to see which bad things are the best...
Wish you find the best solution!
Plese keep us informed.
As for the repair service - they refused. Now they're talking about "mechanical damage to the motherboard" which is not covered by warranty.
They also offered me an error report - for some extra charge. Really consumer-friendly.
Now I'll try my luck with the dealer where i bought it.

[Q] Phone stopped charging?

My phone just doesn't charge anymore.. I've googled and googled. I found one page where a guy said to push up on the tongue of the port to get it centered, but that didnt help at all. I've tried multiple cords with no luck. So I have two questions. What is better to go to for help. My verizon store? Or talk to them on the phone? And if i do, would i need to return to stock? No wait, 3.. if i do need to return to stock, how would i do that with a dead phone? I posted a question on rootz aswell with no solutions yet, maybe y'all will have some ideas. Thanks ahead!

Had the same problem recently. It's a hardware issue, the only way to fix is to change the board inside the phone than contains the USB port.
And there is unfortunately no way of re-locking the bootloader, since your phone won't get a connection to a computer due to the dead port.
I looked around in an local Android forum and found someone who could fix my phone for a very fair price. The USB board is not expensive, you can get one on ebay for about 10 dollars
Hop this helps.

Thanks for the response, Im chatting with samsung support right now. Do you have the link of the repair guy?

nexus not charging

i know it is already posted but my issue is different. Some can charge their phone when it is off but mine cant charge even if its off.
When its off and i plug the charger the lightning logo appears, it indicates that its charging but when i turn it on the percentage of the battery remained the same. it didnt charge at all. Also my pc does not recognize my phone whether if its off or on.
i tried with no luck changing rom, kernel, used different cables and chargers (i even used one from LG).
i want to take it back to samsung but my bootloader is unlocked, im using costume rom, and rooted. They will not accept or repair it
EDIT: i want to install the stock rom and relock bootloader but how? since my pc doesnt connect to my phone

Use a cocktail stick and try push the chipinside your phone slot upwards a little (if the phone were laid faceup on a table). Be delicate as you dont want to force it, but a little nudge up and your problems should aaaaall be resolved.
ive already done that no luck.
bump!
if i can restore my phone to stock recovery, stock rom, stock kernel, remove root will they accept it(warranty)? or do they have something to know that i modified my phone?
EDIT: because im planning to return in back to samsung

Is it a play store model or international? If it is international and you are located in the USA, Samsung will not do it. You can replace the usb port yourself..
mine too
Mine did the exact same thing. Good luck sending it in and having them actually fix it. I'm beginning to think their tech guys are really just a room full of chimps randomly putting stuff together.
I told them exactly what the problem was (because I looked it up before sending it in and my problem was the exact same as everyone else's) and they ignored me and just switched out the battery. That didn't work, so I sent it back again. Then, they updated the software. Since it's a hardware issue, obviously that did nothing. Now, they have repaired the PBA. I don't know what a PBA is or what it has to do with my USB port, but I'm betting the issue still will not be fixed and I'll have to send it back, yet again. After all this mess, I think I'm done with Samsung entirely.

probably the repair shop where you took your phone are just too lazy to repair. I hope they wont do the mess they did to you but i think it depends on tech guys if they are lazy enough to repair.

This is kind of what my phone is doing too (here's the thread i've made)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2059289
It will charge, but only to a certain point, regardless of rom, kernel, on or off, etc
over the past few days the maximum charge has gone down and down. Now it only charges to a max of 82%. I have 2 batteries and it does the same thing on each. My (hopeful) solution is that i bought an external wall battery charger and will charge batteries that way. I have the verizon model so if i wanted to do some sort of warranty work i'd probably have to go through them (not even sure if im still covered). I really dont want to deal with it. It boggles my mind why my phone is doing this though, charges fine but not to full. Oh well c'est la vie.

i wouldnt recommend that to people, for me it went from a phone with "phantom charging" (ie flashing on and off for charging) and issues charging to a short circuit on the usb connection, so that the phone switches off when a usb cable is plugged in. What is well worth trying first is simply giving the port a good clean, a little bit of alcohol and that same cocktail stick may well solve your issue. I've been left charging via a chopped up usb cable to the dock connectors.
i dont doubt that forcing the tab in the port may have worked for you, but it has failed badly for others (ie me), so just be careful suggesting it
I had a similar problem as my micro usb socket was damaged. Don't worry about sending it for repair, do it yourself. The circuit board with a new micro usb socket is available on ebay, I paid £5 for mine. Watch a tear-down video or 2 on youtube and you will be sorted.
The GNex is easy to take apart requiring just a small philips head screwdriver and a pry tool, i used a guitar pik, and these are also available on ebay for just a few ££'s.
Can do the whole job in 15 minutes.

Dead Phone RIP ?

Hi ,
My SGH-i927 was working quite happily sat on charge connected to a USB cable on my PC, I left work with the phone in my pocket and when I came to use it a couple of hours later it was completely unresponsive.
It will not respond to power button at all
It shows no activity when on charge either via wall wart or USB, it does not show up as connected to the PC when USB cable plugged in.
I've tried removing the battery for a couple of minutes and also a different battery with long and short presses of the Power Button whiles't holding volume with various combinations there of.
This is not as a result of my flashing anything it just stopped, the threads I've seen using search all seem to be able to get to a boot screen of some description mine is completely dead.
Phone was Unlocked / rooted / backed up + efs backup / running 4.0.4 UCLJ3 Lite Kernel
Anyone have a suggestion on how I might be able to resurrect it or should I put it in a long ship and set fire to it ?
Please note I imported this Phone into the UK
I approached a local SAMSUNG service center and they won't touch it as it's from outside the EU. - Further more on discussing the nature of the problem I was informed it's probably a hardware fault due to IC or Fuse or combination of them. As these are surface mounted components they wouldn't be repairable by normal means and they wouldn't even give me a number for an independent phone repair.
Can anyone know of and can give me the contact details of a repair person based in the UK who'd be willing to look at it ?

Thankyou,
I appreciate the time taken to respond and especially the offer, however although not completely inept with a soldering iron changing the motherboard may well be beyond my expertise, but I'd be willing to give it a go if all else fails.
I have managed to locate another repair center reportedly having Samsung Qualified technicians. Initial communications seemed to suggest they could deal with the assessment which they provide for free. I have sent the handset to them and am now awaiting their report.
If things do not work out with the repair center, I would like to contact you to discuss your offer further.
Regards
Response from repair center - beyond economical repair - but no further detail.
I think I'll call it quits now and just invest in a new handset.

Asus Zenfone 2 ZE551ML - very slow charging, not detected by PC.

I have two pieces of ZF2 ZE551ML at home. One is my and the other one belongs to my wife. My wife's phone had a broken mini USB port - the first 2 pins from the left were visible - the plastic had broken apart. Firstly, I did not relaise it could be the problem, luckily I managed to change the whole PCB including the broken USB port, however after this change the phone is not being detected by a PC, nor it is fast charging. As I have two phones at home, I checked performance with the other unit and unfortunately, the other one does quick charge and is detected by aPC, so it is not the cable, neither is it the missing software.
I bought another PCB and changed it as well, however still no joy. Does anyone have any brilliant idea how to fix it. I should also say that all other or most of the functions of the phone are working fine (at least those I managed to check: GPS, Wi-Fi, GSM+dual SIM, torch, bluetooth, and so on).
The only problem is that the phone loops on the SMMI Test #1 and is not going any further. I have also tried to detect phone by adb, still no joy. The phone is not rooted!
I have my personal suspects that it could be the faulty main board or a software bug. Any ideas how to fix it?
My phone is running LP 5.0, soft: LRX21V.WW-ASUS_Z00A-2.20.40.198_20160930_8756_user044030427_201501060109, kernel [email protected] #1 Fri Sept 30 15:31>23 CST 2016
Sdcard slot is working?
I would check the connections on both ends of the flex cable with the sim and sd slots on it.
I am having the same problems (because of the busted sd slot). I ordered a new flex cable. When it arrives (approx. 2 weeks) I'll know if that was the cause.
Yes, SD slot is working and both SIMs, so the phone itself works fine, only very long charging and is not detected by a PC.

My phone is running LP 5.0, soft: LRX21V.WW-ASUS_Z00A-2.20.40.198_20160930_8756_user044030427_201501060109, kernel 3.10[email protected] #1 Fri Sept 30 15:31>23 CST 2016

Hi, I did changed both PCBs between phones. Firstly, I had the same problem on both phones, then I made better connections and the batteries started to warm up. Finally, the new one works with the other phone, the old one from the other phone still creates the problem. Probably, it is not the PCB then, or USB connection. It must be something else.
Anyone, any idea?

try fashing raw firmware
on motherboard you can inspect or clean the connector where pcb connects. use magnifying glass to inspect connector
Ok, I actually would like to flash the raw firmware, however I need some guidance here, as the phone that has a problem, is not rooted, and it cannot be detected by any PC now, so I am stuck in the middle and do not know how to proceed...

i am little confused here... you changed pcb on one mobile and fast charger do not works on that. you have other mobile which is working perfectly. both are same model.... if right!! do the following thing to find out...
Phone A:- changed PCB. no fast charge, not detected by pc.
Phone B:- working perfectly normal..
now we want to guess if pcb is faulty or there is issue with flex cable or any software related issue..
remove motherboard from phone A. and install it in Phone B.. if on Phone B. things works well then definitely its problem related to pcb.. if things don't works on phone B too. then it may be a firmware related problem..
raw cannot be installed without pc..... the thing you can ty is updating firmware from sd card via recovery mode.

That is correct, I say it again - I have two phones, same model, same software, kernel, etc. One had a damaged mini USB port, so I purchased 2 PCBs which have mini USB port souldered onto them. I bought them twice, as I was not sure if the first one I got was the correct one. Now, after your first message I changed the PCBs between phones and the result is the same, phone A (which is ok) works with the replacement PCB, and the PCB from working phone still does not work with phone B (the one that has a problem).
As a second step I replaced motherboards between phones now, and the result is still the same, meaning the motherboard from phone B does not seem to work better while it is in phone A body. The symptoms I'm struggling with are: charging takes over 8-9 hours, so it is considerably extended charging (battery is original factory battery 3000 mAh), the phone does not fastcharge at all and it is not detected by any PC.
The phone is not roooted so, I'm afraid I cannot make any changes to firmware through recovery, as it needs to be connected by a cable to a PC, unless there is something else I can do about it, but how to get any further?

I was on lolipop, updated to MM now, but still no joy, charges very slowly like before and when connected to any PC it says one of the recently connected devices is not working properly, so I'm stuck ... I cannot root or apply any ADB sideloads ...

Is your ext. sd being seen in file manager ?
Can you get into 6.0 recovery ?
If yes , you can now downgrade which will reset your fone , With a factory reset in the process , check my signature below.
Your fone not being seen maybe driver issue if other zens too are not being seen...but ..let's see what happens after downgrade.
After downgrade if still slow charge, reboot while connected to charger.
If same prob ..hardware !

Thanks, I was not so deeply checking all available options. SD downgrading worked well for me, however the problem still is in the phone. However, I discovered a few positive and negative signs, which tell me that there is something else - could be the connection - after upgrading to MM before the phone was restarted at least 3-4 times the screen was not going to sleep mode after a minute, it was coming back on and on and on again. After 3-4 restarts it behaved normally again. The same thing happened after downgrade to L.
Another positive discovery is that the SMMI test now works well and everything is ok now, before it got stuck on the 1st or 2nd test and was not going any further ....
One more spot, which was very hard to catch as it popped up for a 0,1 second but dissappeared then quickly so I had to record it with the other phone and play very slowly on the PC - it looks like the Asus cover window pops up and it says - move your finger around the circle to get quick access to your preferable apps and there is also a blue button: Do not show again . This is flashing now and then and I do not have Asus Cover, so the behaviour is quite odd to me.
I have a feeling that there might be something with connections, but really I do not know what else - I checked it 30 times and made sure everything was properly alligned and tight when I was changing the PCB with micro USB port.
By the way the other phone works well on PCs, so I must have all drivers installed, it is just the second phone that is half bricked... I'm wondering now if maybe flashing CM 12 or 13 will help, however as it is not rooted probably it will not work via SD card... or? Am I looking in the right direction?
Buddy , its hardware so software tweaks will be useless .
Buddy, we are on the same ****ing boat.
I tried to go back to 6.0,but i got my phone bricked and now i cant reverse it back because i need usb connection to the computer and simply it isnt recognized.
I suggest you to send the phone to the asus assistance centre or to buy a new usb port for your phone,as it is clearly damaged like mine.I need to do it too so if you want to wait me first so i can check if it works, ill maybe save you some money.

Well, my phone successfully reversed to Lolipop, and I changed the USB port, I talked to Asus authorised service centre and they said it will cost the price of the phone, so I just give up, as everything works, but not the phone with the computer via USB and not the quick charging. Asus centre said it is a motherboard failure, but I'm asking how is that possible if all other functions work well???

Yes, I see your point, but I cannot imagine how is this possible, when all other things work well on the phone and the SMMI test shows all sensors working properly?

Ask yourself the same 2 questions again once more
Is your phone recognised by PC ?
Is fast charging working now ?
If answer is no after downgrade .
You know the answer
i changed mainboard and working
well, i have the same problem and i try the following possibility and all unsuccessful.
1. i tried 3 different pcb still no luck
2. i changed sim flex still no luck
3. i changed battery still no luck
4. i changed lcd and digitizer completely still no luck
5. i wiped cache from android recovery MM still no luck
6. i wiped data and factory reset from android recovery MM still no luck
7. i install same latest os (MM) for ze551ml from sd card still no luck
8. i use original ac adapter and cable and tried working different one for every step.
so i want to ask a questions. can it be ground connection somewhere on cases? or motherboard
i am tired but problem found. it is exactly motherboard problem. i bought used original mainboard and all is working.
Note: other mainboard using same android os version so it is not os failure.
