Can anybody tell me if there is any way of co-copying the EXT3 partition from one SD Card to another using a PC?
I currently have a 16G card and use a cooked rom with A2SD but wish to use a 32G card and want to copy all my A2SD installed apps across so changing the card is seamless.
Also one other question, if a format the card in FAT32 using a PC, will that remove the EXT partition?

eazy mode, create a nandroid backup + ext. copy it to your pc put in bigger SD copy nandroid on it and do a nandroid restore.

Or if you have a Linux Live CD lying around then you can just mount your sd card in Linux and it will mount FAT32 and also EXT partition so you can just copy the contents.
You have a choice of methods although Nandroid is the most obvious choice. Nandroid. Copy sd fat32 part contents to pc then copy to new card. Nandroid restore.
Install clockwork recovery and make a backup, then insert your new SD , create a Ext3 partition using clockwork recovery. Copy your backup from the old to the new card and then Use unrevoked recovery to restore the Ext3 partition.

Use ROM manager and select partition sd card.
Easiest way imo ;D

This does not work. I did what you said, but when I do a nandriod restore it gets to the bit of restoring the ext3 partition and then states that the partition does not exist and so skips it.
I think I would be able to use titanium back up to restore my apps but I can’t create an ext3 partition on my new card. The custom rom I am using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741663 wont boot with out an ext3 partition and the only way I know of creating an ext3 partition is though rom manager which requires the phone to be booted
So I am stuck?
You will likely have to create the ext partition first in linux. Try parted magic live cd, clockwork puts it at the end of the card, not sure why but best to stick with that just in case.

hey everyone... i partitioned my SD card using rom manager.. it worked with no problems at all.. i have got a HTC Hero now... and now i dont want to use ext anymore... im having clockwork recovery.. how to partition the SD card using clockwork.. i want to make ext 0mb...
rom manager gives me a minimum option of 128mb...

Install any other rom just to partition your sd card then restore the backup!

I can never get this to work, it always says I need root privlidges to write to the new cards ext partition, and it's anyones guess to what the root password is with these Live CD's.

generally there isnt one, and if there is it would probably be "toor" (root backwards).
if you want root privelages in the file explorer what i usually do is type "sudo nautilus" from terminal (on ubuntu).
but i would just use gparted to copy both ext and fat partitions to the new sd, then expand the fat partition if the sdcard is bigger.

Fat partition has to be first, otherwise windows can't read the card. It is confused by ext which it doesn't understand.

I'm using Modaco R8, and a 16GB microSD card class 2. got annoyed with it and decided to change to 8GB class 10.
I'm using the EXT partition of 512 mb using ROM manager on the class 2 card so all of my apps are installed there. I need to know how do i backup all the apps in it and transfer it directly to the class 10 card without any changes whatsoever.
Please specify any step clearly and if possible the easiest and simplest way to do it.

terrible....I only saw on normal SD with class 10
this is what you do..
- boot into your recovery image (more than likely clockword recovery)
- go to the nandroid menu
- perform a backup
once that's all done.. copy the contents of the SD card (don't worry about the sd-ext stuff, that's all safe in the nandroid backup) to your PC/Mac.
- stick your new sd card into your phone and partition it.
- once that's done, copy the contents back from your pc to the new card.
- go back into your recovery image
- restore from the nandroid backup.
done!

Got but 8GB is kinda cheap and its by Kingmax. 16GB got way too expensive...

I heard bout this method, wouldnt it change anything to my ROM if restoring the nandroid backup just for the sd-ext stuffs? this one or the linux one is easiest and reliable?
Seriously guys, learn how to use Ubuntu, won't take more than an hour of your time to learn the basic tricks on how to copy + paste between ext partitions. I just booted up with Ubuntu, stuck both cards in, parititoned and then copied and pasted between both cards, and was done in minutes. No issues after putting it back in the Desire.

So using linux is the easiest way right? lucky i've been using it since last year, and i even dual booted it. but i'm staying with windows so i remove it cuz i dont use it much.
Yes. There is no decent and free methods on windows. You are better off using ubuntu.

just make sure the card is partitioned correctly and then copy the titanium backup folder with all the programs in it to the sd
Make sure that in titanium backup preferences, Force to same location is checked
start up the program and run the batch restore all apps + data.
Do not restore system data, only apps.
You can use the recovery (from Windows or whatever). After all, it's a linux. Just boot in recovery and issue commands with adb shell:

You need to install SDK and perform that command from the tools directory. If you have troubles here consult the SDK documentation.
Once there you can use the build-in tar to do the backup. This is an example with ClockworkMod. YMMV with others.

tar cvzf /sdcard/a2sd_backup.tar.gz *
To restore:

Also, ClockworkMod's Nandroid backup automatically makes a backup of the sdcard. You can do a complete backup and then restore it using the new sd card when correctly partitioned.

Well, Ubuntu is painless to use. There's a GUI, and there's no need to type funny DOS-like lines, and you don't even need to boot it from your computer. Create a flashdrive with Ubuntu, and you won't even know it was there! This is coming from a guy who has never touched Linux his entire life, until I got my Desire and started rooting!

Hello. Silly question. I'm gonna partition the sdcard, so I want to back it up first. Is it as simple as copying all the sdcard onto my hard drive, then restoring all the folders again after the format? Everything should be back to normal and nothing would go wrong?

One thing to mention - are you already using an EXT partition? If so, this can't be backed up in Windows so you'd need to do a nandroid OR backup it up in a linux install

Depends on the ROM, I use EXT3 and its fine for me

S2E here, too - how did you partition the card - CWM? (I'd guess usually that shouldn't lead into problems...)
Did you also mount the partition manually in CWM? (I'm pretty sure that I didn't - but that's still an open question / if I have to / should) - what CWM version?

Yep,obviously,I used CWM 5.0.2.0 for the partition of the card.
I am using CWM 5.0.2.0 for the Nandroid backup and I have also tried via ROM manager to no avail.

Then surely it looks some issue with your SD-ext,I would recommend you to repartition using minitool partition wizard,For now you could use app extractor app to restore your apps/data from nandroid.

BTW,I have already backed up my applications using TB and the app data should be in internal memory as it was not moved to ext.
I just want to have the recovery fixed to backup.
You can't just copy the whole SD card on the PC as it can't read the sdext# directory.
Most of the people recommend CWM for the partiton of the card and they didn't have any problem with that.Which recovery did you use ?

I prefer FASTBOOT
I had been using cwm 5.0.2.8 for a long time with no issues while backing up and restoring nandroid including sd-ext.
But due to mirroring bug in temporary 2.5.0.7 with 5.0.2.8,i downgraded to v5.0.2.0.
From then I started to have problems in restoring nandroids made previously with v5.0.2.8.I did everything again(partitioning,backup and restore) with 5.0.2.0,and it all started to work as before again.
So,I jumped to a conclusion that if you create sd-ext with specific cwm version then you should use the same version to backup or restore nandroids.
I know this sounds silly but proved to be good in my case.I might be wrong though.

my experience with cwm 5.0.2.8 I restore old backups made with 4.0.1.4 without any problems and found it very useful for advanced restore
Flashed recovery 5.0.2.8,now when i try to backup(nandroid) it goes like this :

Nothing happens after that(waited for 30 mints) and when i try to reboot the device it gets stuck on htc logo for few mints and then boot into recovery.

I'm using 4.0.1.4 - by accident because of that wrong PC49IMG file in the index thread and I'm really too lazy to update.
Re. your problems: There are a few reports that CWM (all versions) sometimes fails with wiping/formatting (or does it a bit dirty) so I'd guess this very likely could also happen with partitioning (if I'm correct the partitions will be wiped and formatted also, then). I really would just repartition again - and afterwards I'd do a complete wipe/format of the sd-ext - just to make sure...
Keep in mind that a sdcard is not a hard drive...

second probably the trouble (as you have already said) is the card, the formatting you? if you do not want to lose the data on your ext partition with gparted can copy them like a fat partition
even if given the situation I suggest you start from scratch. deep Formatting
partition with ubuntu live cd and flash the rom (I understand that will not boot up right? The ext partition is recognized as the first boot). There is a possibility that the micro sd does not work well anyway good luck I hope I can help you

I realise that I should have created my ext partition as ext4 not ext3 as the newer roms seem to need it. I had a search and it seems to be a bit complicated to simply convert the partition so I have a two-part question to see if what I have in mind will work.
I use Link2sd which I like and seems to work well (other than for Swype which I now have gotten rid of).
So, will this work (and I apologise for being somlistic in my approach):
I move all my linked apps to the SDcard proper using L2SD (there's not enough room on the phone's internal memory)
I copy my entire SD card to my computer just in case
I then use 4EXT and using the option "wipe or format --> EXT3" I reformat that ext3 partition as a ext4 partition
Using L2SD I relink all the apps to the new ext4.
Otherwise, if I were to reformat and repartition the entire SD card using Gparted, can I simply drag and drop the SDcard folder I backed up on my computer back onto the SD card then relink everything with L2SD?

Format sdcard to ext4
Copy files back
Nandrestore

Great - nice and easy. Should I move the apps to the main part of sd card first by unlinking them because I don't see the ext3 partition when I connect the phone to my computer.
The concept of doing a nandbackup is to copy thhe current status of the phone. Everything. So you relly don't need to do that.
Just make sure that the contents you see when you plug the phone to the computer is saved in the computer including the nandbackup you made.
The nand will basically take care of the files on the ext part when you restore it.

If using 4ext you only need to convert ext to ext4(it backs up automatically). If you restore a nand made with ext3 you also loose the ext4 partition so you also need to manually convert all nand backups to ext4 using 4ext. Hope this makes sense...

Put simply:
boot into 4ext recovery.
go into tools/Convert or change a backup --> ext4
convert ext
It will automatically backup ext, convert it to ext4 and then restore ext again (no data loss).
Delete all old NAND backups and start again (otherwise you'll restore your ext3 partition) or you can convert backups with 4ext (from ext3 to ext4).

Using the 4ext app go into manage backups or using a file explorer go into sdcard/clockworkmod/backup and delete the corresponding folder

I have booted the phone up but now it does not want to recognise the ext partition. Links2sd suggests that the device may not support ext4 yet I know lots of Desire owners on here have that. I guess I have to revert to get my apps back that are currently showing as not loaded.
Just convert back to ext3 again using 4ext.. kernel might not support ext4

I'd say just leave it as ext3. I've never come across a ROM that don't support ext3....

I was thinking of installing this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1315961 I hear it is quite a stable one and that's most important to me. It says that ext4 is required for the ROM:
(Q) I get an error ”can’t Mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 (File Exists)”.
(A) That error and others like it are generally caused by a corrupt ext partition on your SD Card. The solution is to use 4EXT recovery, gParted, or a similar tool to reformat the ext partition to ext4. Leave the FAT32 partition alone and you shouldn’t lose any data. Don't use Windows-based partition tools!
Some suggest using ext3 as it is a known quantity and most ROMS will boot with an ext3 partition, however Runnymede AIO requires an ext4 partition.
