[Q] Freezing your account - does it block out any part of the phone?

I'm traveling overseas in September for over half a month and want to call Sprint and get them to freeze my account while I'm gone. I understand the monthly fee is $8.99 (don't know if they will pro-rate it or what) which is much better than paying for that month of service that you hardly use.
Since I'm going out of the country and won't be able to use my EVO, I'm assuming I can freeze my account but still use the phone, just without any mobile wireless capabilities.
The wifi should be able to look up stuff online, check email, and look at Google Maps, correct? I just want to make sure there's not some weird kind of thing that Sprint would lock out all the features of your phone.
Bottom line: you can freeze your account but still use all features besides making calls and sending texts via mobile broadband, right? But all apps (besides GPS) can work off wi-fi, unless the app is specifically designed to use mobile broadband only.

I thought that would be the case too, but GV relies on the phone's non broadband capabilities - so you need mobile broadband/phone line for it to work.
I thought I was being clever and found away to never use minutes by using GV to dial to landlines but that's not the case.

I would venture to say that unless you are traveling somewhere that has cdma coverage, your normal phone related functions won't work anyway since you won't have reception. You really shouldn't need to pay a fee to basically disable the phone portion of your phone since on the evo, you have the option to have the airplane mode exclude wifi from the radios it disables. I traveled to the UK back in april and can attest to the fact that the wifi on my old pre worked without a hitch and I can also confirm that it did not receive signal either so there were no incoming calls or sms messages to worry about. All that said, you shouldn't have any trouble with wifi. As long as you're on wifi, google maps should work just fine as well.

OK thanks, I didn't want to assume anything, because, you know, I really wouldn't be surprised if a company froze more than just sending/receiving texts/calls capability (in addition to web surfing obviously).
I just don't want to pay almost $100 for 2 weeks of service out of the month - so I need to give em a call and see if they can freeze it for 2 weeks and charge me half as much, that way I can save a little cash.

Did you use it through a SIP program or just the GV app by itself? I will have to test it out when I'm there.

Well that would be even better, I do hope you're right!

Any VOIP should work on wi-fi... damn skype and Fring shenanigans... I was so looking forward to that when I deployed... would have made it so much easier to communicate with my wife. (shes not real big on technology and my short fuse of trying to setup/explain how to do new things sucks) lol...
You basically sumed it up, all apps should work fine unless they need specific network support. In my past experiences with deploying for short terms, it was actually just easier to suck it up and pay the bill instead of downgrading service. They don't always get it right and if you end up coming back early it can be a PITA to get it back on..

Thanks, I was thinking about the same thing about it being such a pain in the ass to deal with it as well... and when I finally get back stateside at least I'll definitely have service.

Although Google Voice requires the mobile network for phone, it uses data for sms and I expect mms. So if you had WiFi access you would have texting available.

Phone with A101?

Hi all,
is there really no way to use the A101 as a phone? (with the SIM! - not Skype etc)
I'm wondering why other tablets (Odys, Galaxy Tab) are able to do so

You could use text+ from the market.I tried it before and worked pretty good to turn this to a phone tablet.but wwsnt sure how I would eventually need to start spending money.but tot turn it into a phone,try that app.

The closest you can get that I am aware of would be to use either Skype, or Google Voice GrooveIP combo which could be used over the access provided by the SIM and associated provider, however it would still be VOIP and not the type of phone you speak of, BUT it would allow you to send and receive normal phone calls from/to real phones/mobile phones. SO I don't see any reason to care. GrooveIP is like $6 and then the google voice number is free. don't knock it lol

[Guide] (4.2 ! )Wifi Calling for Galaxy Nexus -- UPDATED

Hi All-- I really miss Tmobile wifi calling, and I have finally put together a system which works for me...so I thought I would share it if anyone is interested.
It works about as well as Wifi Calling did on my Tmobile Gs2.
I have found this to have two main benefits over the Groove IP method put together by codesplice here: (note: all credit goes to codesplice--he did the heavy lifting on this..I just modified his approach)
1) the call quality is a LOT better. a LOT LOT LOT better. Groove IP sucks.
2) with this method, calls will still ring through to your gmail (assuming you have it set up that way in google voice)
Download these apps to your phone:
CSIPSimple
Google Voice
Google Voice Callback (donate) (you can get it from the amazon appstore...not on the play store anymore for some reason)
Tasker (you need the newest beta, available here http://tasker.dinglisch.net/beta.html )
Secure settings
Download this file, unzip it, and put the files on your phone's SD card (tasker profiles):

Instructions:
1) Go to Callcentric.com and sign up for a free account. Write down your SIP number that it gives you (it will start with 1777)
2) also in callcentric, sign up for a free phone number. If you say that you live in the us, you have to pay for 911 access....
3) Open CSIPSimple on your phone. It will pop up with some questions about when you want it to work. I have mine set to ONLY be in use when I am connected to a wifi network. Then add an account. It will have an option for callcentric. Do that and sign in with your callcentric account (username is the 1777 number again).
4) Go to voice.google.com on your computer, go to the settings page, and add the new phone number that you got from callcentric (the phone number, not the 1777 number). It will call you to confirm the number...it should ring through to your phone! (note: under your regular cell number, choose 'edit>advanced>make sure that "Ring my other phones before going to voicemail " is checked)
--You have now set it up for incoming calls. If that's all you care about, you are done! Any call made to your google voice number will ring through to your phone via wifi calling.--
Now we're going to set it up to make outgoing calls
5) Open Google Voice Callback. Sign in with your account. In the settings, choose your new callcentric phone number as the callback number. That's it! you're set! now when you initiate an outgoing call, it will ring back to you, and you are good to go for free wifi calling!
--If you don't care about automating it, you can stop now.--
We're now going to set it up so that it works like WIFI calling, meaning that it a) turns on when connected to a good wifi network, b) turns off your cell radio when connected so you're not wasting battery, and c) it turns off automatically when you are not connected to wifi. We will do this with the miracle of tasker.
6) Make SURE you are on the latest beta of tasker. It is required for this to work!

DL this zip file that I put together with my tasker profiles, unzip the files and put them on your SD card. Open up tasker and long-press on the 'profiles' tab. Choose import, and then import them.

The advantage of CSIPSimple over the native SIP client in JB is that CSIPSimple can be set to only operate when connected to wifi.

I have it specifically set up so that it only works on wifi--I don't want it on 3g.
However, if you want it to work over a data connection, that's just a simple settings change in the CSIPSimple app for incoming, and then you'll want to modify the tasker profile that interacts with Google Voice Callback so that outgoing goes through GVCB by default on 3g as well.

I tried creating 2 different accounts at ipkall and each time I get my phone number and try to put it into GV I get an error saying that the number is already in use by 2 other accounts!
4th account was the charm, thanks!

Keep trying....and try a different area code. If a number isn't used for 30 days it resets and is assigned again

Really quick question regarding this topic. Are these wifi calls for free? Tmobile call me today to see how I was doing after a week with their service and ask me if I wanted to add free wifi calling. I asked the lady if it was free she said it was and it wouldn't count in my minutes is this true?

Yes, if done correctly the calls are free. With my phone in airplane mode and wi-fi on, all calls go through Google Voice then through the free SIP account(s)

Is there an alternative to gv callback? I'd prefer not to have the amazon appstore installed. Thanks for this. The incoming call quality is much better than groove. I've been testing multiple setups on my ns4g before I move to the gn in a few weeks.

Yes, Voice+ is what I'm using right now. Working so far. Only problem I have with this is that all your outgoing calls come up as calls from your Goole Voice number.

I used voice plus originally, but it doesn't allow different profiles for wifi vs cell (gvcb has tasker integration)

v 0.4.2.72 is the older version and still should be using your Data Plan. For those of us on unlimited data... this is preferable. Yes, I have a backup copy.

This is actually good for me. I am on a limited Data plan and never come close to using my voice minutes.

No, they apparently changed more than that too.. The app I've been collaborating with a Dev on, Messaging + Google Voice, is kinda jacked up now with the new update. They did something to block 3rd party notifications, as far as we can tell. It works fine on. 72 tho.

It's ALWAYS used plan minutes. I don't understand what you guys are talking about. The only way you didn't is if you made calls over data/Wifi using GrooveIP or some VoIP app that used your Voice number.

The update said overseas calls always did. As of this update, US calls will join that. They have rewritten the update description since the forums started talking about it.

It uses minutes. It always has. I'm telling you. It uses your carrier's minutes, not Google Voice minutes. The My T-Mobile app tells me how many minutes I've used and it always goes down when I make calls through my Voice number (which is my primary number). I have the Voice app set to "Make All Calls Through Voice."
It has ALWAYS used your plan minutes. You guys just don't understand how it works.
Your phone calls Google using your carrier-assigned number ----> Google picks up and connects your call to whoever you actually dialed ("John") ----> John gets the call and sees your Voice number

I can confirm that Google Voice has always used minutes, unless setup through an application like GrooveIP. I'm not sure where you guys are getting that it didn't use minutes before...

I didn't say I believe GV doesn't or hasn't used carrier mins, just that I have come across pieces of info that say one thing, and others that say another.
I understand GV uses carrier mins.
However, I am not clear whether it uses carrier mins when connected to a WiFi LAN.

Again, it always does. Calls go through GSM/CDMA. Unless you're using a VoIP app like GrooveIP to make calls via Voice, you're using minutes.

Either the first thread got moved, or this is the second thread made by the same person. I'm not aiming to insult the OP, but please do some research beforehand. Because what Google did was clarify what was already there. You're just confusing people.

Only one making sense here. They are legally barred from doing that. One has to use grooveip to make voip calls.

Ok, so some say that GV now uses plan minutes to route call to overseas numbers where as before it used data, am I right?
I call a Canadian cell number everyday and my 1500 Allotted anything minutes still shows 0 used, so what exactly is the dispute?

Another SIP thread

Hello all,
I just got done with a one hour call using GrooveIP/GV/GV+ and struggled most of the call keeping it alive. My main problem was the recipient hearing me. I was pretty impressed to make a whole hour to be honest but it was a bit of a struggle. That being said, what are you using for your wifi calls these days? As most of you know, SIP linked with GV is coming to an end. Any thoughts? Just trying to have an open discussion about it pertaining to not only the Note but the general concept.

It isn't sip that is going away, it's the xmpp protocol. I use my gv number with an obihai device and an now going to lose the ability to make/receive calls to my home phone for free. I'm sure there will be a device come soon that integrates directly into hangouts like the ata (the obihai) doors since that is how hangouts will now work. It's basically becoming Skype, and forcing people to join Google+. That part I am not happy with, but I will do what I gotta do to keep my free calling...

Well, I will just be using my cell in the meantime. I don't really use my home phone but like to have it for the kids. There is already the gvmate out but requires a computer. I will wait for an ata that doesn't require that.
