Not with temp root. You must have a perma rooted incredible to load custom roms. You also must have a custom recovery. Just use unrevoke's program to root your phone and it will do everything for you.
Can i take the root off if i use unrevoke's program?
No the unrevoke program only does the following.
1. Gives you root
2. Loads the custom recovery
3. Optional - Turns the security off on the phone. *AKA S-OFF*
All the security is a signature check to make sure that only Verizon/HTC signed roms or updates can be flashed.
The only way to remove root so far on the Incredible is to flash the RUU which restores your phone back to what it was when you took it out of the box.
Also no I do not think it would be wise to remove root from the phone while running a custom rom. Not having root access while on a custom rom would be a nightmare if you need to do anything with Rom manger.
All custom roms are packaged as rooted roms. If you really want an unrooted custom rom then you will need to either get someone to cook one up for you or make it yourself.
S-OFF
The version of UnrEVOked available for the Incredible also does S-OFF.
Users of this root method have no choice; S-OFF is done automatically ~ per the notes on their site.
Hello guys,
First of all, I'm not new to rooting or custom ROMS, having said that my question is, what is the best method to root an EVO?
Browsing thru the forums, I found the following methods:
[ROOT] ~~~ HTC EVO - Universal Auto Root ~~~ v2.5 (4/25/11)
To my understanding, this method will flash a custom rom "Sprint Lovers ROM"
and
[Program] SimpleRoot .1 ---- 3 Click Root w/ nand unlock!!
This method recommends flashing a custom rom
Now, I do not want to flash a custom rom since I'm doing this for a friend and I do not want him to be dealing with custom roms, nandroid backups, etc. Is there another method to root an evo? Without having to flash a custom rom.
Thank you
Easiest, fastest, coolest way to root without a custom rom. Might have some issues with permissions if you don't flash a custom rom unless you're just trying to do basic junk like tether. I'd actually recommend flashing a stock rooted custom rom instead of just gaining root on the eng stock rom. Make sure you hit up the market and download busybox if you don't flash a custom rom and update superuser.
Run unrevoked 3 (1st one)

Stock rooted rom, or you could just run sprint lovers. It just has few added tweaks but mostly stock.

Thank you and yes, he just wants to tether

Most of the Hot Spot App usage will be from a custom rom in order for it to be unlocked. Wireless Tether will usually work as well and all you need is root. There are plenty of stock ruu's out there as well, but is a little more time consuming to run.
If you look down a little on xHaux's post in your first link...you can do a quick version that does not flash Sprint Lovers:
Instructions for Quick method:
This will completely wipe your phone. If you would like to back up your apps you can use Titanium backup to save them. It also has an option to save the system files but this can result in a buggy ROM afterward.
Extract AutoRoot.zip into a folder that is easy to find.
Open a DOS prompt by running the OpenShell file.
Type 'autoroot quick' and press Enter
It will then flash the engineering bootloader and the recovery through fastboot. Once it is finished you can use the bootloader menu to boot into the recovery and make a NANDroid, flash a ROM, radios, etc.
No matter the reason...a nandroid is always a good idea if only to do it once your happy with your decision on what to run.....something WILL happen when he/she finds out what options are out there. A quick restore will get you back to day one.
Also look even a bit farther down in the thread..there are options based on what hboot you have. xHausx's method was such a breeze...just sit back and watch the scripts do the work for you!
Good Luck
Unrevoked. One click and done.
Or am I out of luck unless I root and use a custom rom?
You don't need to be rooted or have a custom ROM, just a custom recovery.
Hey I'm looking to flash a custom Rom because I'm not a fan of Asus skin... From my research I don't need to root the phone, is that correct?
I only need to unlock bootloader and flash twrp.
ofc you can ..if you have a custom recovery
Hi everyone, i want to know if is posible flash a custom rom (with the bootloader unlocked) without a custom recovery like TWRP.
Because I would like to have the possibility to return to the stock rom and block te bootloader if i want in the future.

This is just an absurd question. There's literally no way apart from that. Flashing a custom will always need a custom recovery. If you wanna gonna go back to the old MIUI then u can do it without any hassle and relock the bootloader along with it anyways, easily. Research and learn about things first before asking these.
