Not with temp root. You must have a perma rooted incredible to load custom roms. You also must have a custom recovery. Just use unrevoke's program to root your phone and it will do everything for you.
Can i take the root off if i use unrevoke's program?
No the unrevoke program only does the following.
1. Gives you root
2. Loads the custom recovery
3. Optional - Turns the security off on the phone. *AKA S-OFF*
All the security is a signature check to make sure that only Verizon/HTC signed roms or updates can be flashed.
The only way to remove root so far on the Incredible is to flash the RUU which restores your phone back to what it was when you took it out of the box.
Also no I do not think it would be wise to remove root from the phone while running a custom rom. Not having root access while on a custom rom would be a nightmare if you need to do anything with Rom manger.
All custom roms are packaged as rooted roms. If you really want an unrooted custom rom then you will need to either get someone to cook one up for you or make it yourself.
S-OFF
The version of UnrEVOked available for the Incredible also does S-OFF.
Users of this root method have no choice; S-OFF is done automatically ~ per the notes on their site.

I rooted using the Unrevoked method and can use wifi tether just fine on the stock 2.1 with the most recent update. From what I understand, this is not a full root and the system directory is not unlocked after boot. Am I correct so far?
Now, I should be able to install a custom rom with this since I can boot into a custom recovery. Once I install a custom rom, will that rom be fully rooted? What advantage do I get from doing the full method that I don't already have?

check toast's full unlock part two tells u there. you'll be able to write on the system
Unrevoked does not unlock NAND, so you cannot flash a custom ROM, as far as I have learned.
Right now I'm running stock radio, stock rom, and all I've done is rooted my phone by the original method. I do not have unevoked 3 or forever.
I want to be able to make custom recoveries, install forever, update my radio to 2.15, and then try out some custom froyo roms. Can someone please verify that my steps are correct?
Install unevoked 3 first
Make nandroid backup
Install forever
Install newest radio
Maybe another backup
Start trying out different roms
Would this be the proper steps. Didn't know if I had to do anything different since I rooted the original way and not with unevoked3.

Yes, although note that a backup made before installing unrevoked forever can not be used to revert the S-OFF change.

No. Root is root and just means the ability to run programs with superuser privileges. You will need to use unrevoked3 to install a custom recovery, as you outlined in your steps. But the root aspect is precisely the same, for all phones, regardless of the method used to obtain root privileges.
Thanks for your reply, just wanted to make sure I had the proper steps down before messing with anything. Now I just need to re read all the install instructions

Basically it means that gain access to advanced features which usually do not have to access mainly to prevent you to break something.
1. They're basically the same thing but as its name states, with pre-rooted roms you do not have to do the rooting procedure.
2. Check 1. Custom roms are modified versions of the original rom. Rooting is the first step towards enabling you to install customized roms. This thread will help you with the installation of a custom ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
3. No, but be careful to install the appropriate RUU. Check this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667

1. Same thing!
2. Correct - already rooted for you. However RUU is a term relating to a stock rom, rather than a custom rom. So you just flash the custom rom, not an ruin.
3. For this you flash the ruu! You are then completely back to carrier specific, non rooted stock rom.
Hello guys,
First of all, I'm not new to rooting or custom ROMS, having said that my question is, what is the best method to root an EVO?
Browsing thru the forums, I found the following methods:
[ROOT] ~~~ HTC EVO - Universal Auto Root ~~~ v2.5 (4/25/11)
To my understanding, this method will flash a custom rom "Sprint Lovers ROM"
and
[Program] SimpleRoot .1 ---- 3 Click Root w/ nand unlock!!
This method recommends flashing a custom rom
Now, I do not want to flash a custom rom since I'm doing this for a friend and I do not want him to be dealing with custom roms, nandroid backups, etc. Is there another method to root an evo? Without having to flash a custom rom.
Thank you
Easiest, fastest, coolest way to root without a custom rom. Might have some issues with permissions if you don't flash a custom rom unless you're just trying to do basic junk like tether. I'd actually recommend flashing a stock rooted custom rom instead of just gaining root on the eng stock rom. Make sure you hit up the market and download busybox if you don't flash a custom rom and update superuser.
Run unrevoked 3 (1st one)
http://unrevoked.com/
Stock rooted rom, or you could just run sprint lovers. It just has few added tweaks but mostly stock.

Most of the Hot Spot App usage will be from a custom rom in order for it to be unlocked. Wireless Tether will usually work as well and all you need is root. There are plenty of stock ruu's out there as well, but is a little more time consuming to run.
If you look down a little on xHaux's post in your first link...you can do a quick version that does not flash Sprint Lovers:
Instructions for Quick method:
This will completely wipe your phone. If you would like to back up your apps you can use Titanium backup to save them. It also has an option to save the system files but this can result in a buggy ROM afterward.
Extract AutoRoot.zip into a folder that is easy to find.
Open a DOS prompt by running the OpenShell file.
Type 'autoroot quick' and press Enter
It will then flash the engineering bootloader and the recovery through fastboot. Once it is finished you can use the bootloader menu to boot into the recovery and make a NANDroid, flash a ROM, radios, etc.
No matter the reason...a nandroid is always a good idea if only to do it once your happy with your decision on what to run.....something WILL happen when he/she finds out what options are out there. A quick restore will get you back to day one.
Also look even a bit farther down in the thread..there are options based on what hboot you have. xHausx's method was such a breeze...just sit back and watch the scripts do the work for you!
Good Luck
Unrevoked. One click and done.
I rooted my EVO and installed custom ROMs until around the fourth OTA which said it removed rooting or something (didn't read everything, saw unroot and I was happy with the current version). However, it's been a long time and my phone has slown down plus there's Android updates. I don't remember what my rooting method was (it was the very first method when the phone came out), but do I have to 1) undo the original root and/or 2) use the newest root method for the latest superuser ROMs? I have root access, a bootloader, custom recovery...several tools already, but I don't now if they're updated for user the latest superuser ROMs or tools. Thank you.

As long as your s-off your fine all you have to do is flash a Rom. Make sure you make a backup and wipe everything except sd card. No need to unroot then reroot.

If you're s-off, just update your recovery (Amon Ra 2.3 has been the most stable for me) and flash a new rom. You may want to go ahead and update your radios and whatnot before flashing the rom. Remember to not pull the battery after the radio flashes.
The rom will have updated superuser etc as long as it's a recent rom.
