Hi forum,
I have noticed that my HTC Desire only reaches 2mbit max upload no matter which WIFI network I take.
I know the 3G upload max is 2mbit but is the phone's max upload regardless of wifi or 3g connect also 2mbit? is this hard capped in the desire and/or Android 2.1 or a driver issue?
Anybody have the same issues or can shed some light on this issue?
Or you know, it might also come down to the fact that your internet connexion doesn't have faster upload speed that 2Mbps.
You never know
A device cannot upload faster than it can read datas you know... you're probably using a class 2 SD card? That's capped at 2 mb/s.

I forgot to mention that I tested it on both a 60/6 internet connection at home, on my internal network and at the office wifi network 100/100mbit.
A mate of mine with a desire had the same results while 2 other mates using an Iphone had 14mbit up at the office.

If I download at max 2mb/s to my SD you are right, but I downloaded at around 15mbit if this was the SD card limit I would guess the upload should be the same if the network allowed it.

Nonsense! My class 2 Sandisk 16gb MicroSD card has a sustained read speed of around 20mb/s and a sustained write speed of 7.5mb/s.
The class of a card is not an "upper" cap, it's the *minimum* sustained write speed.

Dave

Then you might be onto something? I cannot try it myself, I've got no access to a connection greater that 1Mbps (yea, the UK has crap network speeds).
Anybody with wifi access with more then 2mbit upload, that can test it with an application like speedtest.net?
I just tested it with speedtest.net Amsterdam Server,
@ Desire: Download 13,35 and Upload 2,35 Mbit
@ pc: Download 58,07 and Upload 2,98 Mbit
Some more tests:
Desire WIFI 54g @home 60/6 speedtest.net: 14m - 15m/1.5m - 2m
Laptop WIFI 54g @home 60/6 speedtest.net: 20m - 30m/5m - 5.5m
Desktop 1g @home 60/6 speedtest.net: 40m - 50m/5m - 5.5m
Looks like the wireless in the desire is not the fastest one, 15 down is enough but I don't understand why it's limited to 2 up only.
On a 20/2 connection, I had 6.8Mbps dl and 1.1Mbps ul 60ms ping for about two weeks until April 5th. Ever since, I'm capped to 2.9Mbps dl and 0.1Mbps ul 240ms ping, max. Same test servers. No idea why (no hardware change since). I get higher with HSPDA when I leave town now.

According to Speedtest.net application maximum I got 2.3 Mbit/sec.
On my desire was speedtest on www.merac.sk 7,8mbit down and 3,6mbit up. Wifi router 54mbit with connectivity 60/60mbit optical.
On next test 7,2/5,3 mbit. So no 2mbit upload limit here.

Good to hear that!! weird that I can't get mine above the 2 then!
My internet is too slow (1 Mbit /sec up) to compare; but this got me interested in trying something similar on my WiFi LAN.
I used SwiFTP Server for Android @ the Desire, and an FTP client for Windows @ the PC, all using WiFi.
Results:
- copy a 5 MByte file from from /sdcard/mp3 to the PC -> 8 Mbit / sec
- copy a 5 MByte file from from /system/app to the PC -> 9 Mbit / sec
- copying the same file twice from anywhere, the 2nd time the transfer rate would go up to 11 Mbit / sec probably due to read caching.
So over WiFi it can do 11 Mbit / sec up***
***Of course this doesn't say if that limit is imposed by the Desire, the Tele2 WiFi router, or even the laptop...
For comparison, I also mounted the phone as an USB drive.
Copying one file from /sdcard/mp3 to the PC over USB: too fast for a good result.
Copying ~400 MByte of files from /sdcard/mp3 to the PC over USB: sustained copy speeds of about 60 to 70 Mbit / sec.
YMMV
HTC WILDFIRE VS IPOD VS PC on FIBRE
It seems that if you try to test using browser it will give much slower results - try downloading sppednet app from market place.
I have bt infinty - 40Mbps down 10Mbps up.
HTC Wildfire using the browser at speedtest.net gave me 1.95Mbps down and 0.34Mbps up
However after installing the speedtest.net app i achieved 10.85Mbps down and 1.30Mbps up
The actual results for the PC with IE8 at speedtest.net were 37.48Mbps down and 8.24Mbps up
The Ipod Touch 8GB acheived 5.70Mbps down and 6.84 upload

Hi!
My Wifispeed is approx. 700 Kbits/s, and this doesnt change if i surf the internet or if i download from my local network. For the internet part, this speed is ok. But on my local network i should get MUCH more speed, i have a 54 MBit Router set to G Mode and my blackstone connects with G Support.
But i should get a speed 10 times faster like my other pcs do on the local network.
Why is the Blackstone so slow?
I already read about the registrysetting
HKLM\Comm\TNETWLN12511\Parms
param="Dot11SupportedRateMaskG" value="8"
But this was already my default setting.
Please, if there are any ideas / hacks please tell me!
Hi All,
Beside this registry, are there any other setting we can change to improve the WIFI connection speed ? Coz i tried to search using google but no luck.
Btw Marry X'mas & Super happy new Year to each and everyone of you all ...
I just upgraded to a rooted Stock Froyo release (3.26.651.6) and while the 2.0.5-pre07 Android tether works, I don't seem to get the good download speeds when I connect my laptop to it.
So the tether application shows speeds of 4-5 Mbps on the phone screen, but when I wirelessly tether to it and run a speed check on my laptop, i barely get 1Mbps, sometimes even around 500kbps. In fact this problem was even worse when I was on the earlier Android release on the phone. It has improved since the Froyo upgrade, but is nowhere close to the speeds that I would like
Any ideas if this is normal? Or am I missing something here?
what speed test are you using?
I know when I was rooted with 2.1 I was getting around 5-6mbps when using wireless tether with my laptop
2.2 opened rooted 2mbps usb tether 6mbps

I get anywhere from 2Mbps to 6.7 Mbps depending on location. (that's on 4g)
I'm seeing the same thing as darth. Speed tests (the speakeasy one) gives anywhere from 5 to 10 mbps on my phone but on the laptop its around 1 to 1.5. I wonder if encryption has anything to-do with it, I run the WiFi tether app on wpa2 aes with a not-so-short key. Maybe the encryption and the heavier processing slows it down? I'll test without encryption and post the results in a couple of hours.

The funny thing is if I share my internet connection using USB on 4G to my laptop, the speed is around 5 Mbps. So the slow speed is isolated to the wireless tether app and across all devices I connect to it.
On 3g with wifi tether pre7 i just did 1.7 meg down, and 0.34 meg up.

Yes, I tried again without encryption and that does not seem to be the slowing factor. 4g tethered using WiFi tether app gives 1mbps download and 200k up. On 3g, the tethering app gives 250k download and 20k up.
When I do the same speed test directly from the phone, it shows 5mbps down and 1mbps up on 4g, and 500kbps down and 50kbps up on 3g. So its definitely the app. But since this is a preview, I'm pretty sure the devs will get around to fixing it before too long.

I've been tethering my Evo 4G for about a year now and all of a sudden, a few days ago, I noticed my WiFi tether speeds dramatically decreased, especially when 4G is turned on. When I run speedtests directly on my Evo 4G I would get an average of 6 Mbps download and 1.4 Mbps upload. When I run speedtest.net on my laptop that is WiFi tethered I would get an error "Configuration Load Failed" and my browsing is extremely slow. I tried my desktop computer and got the same error message and dialup like browsing speeds. I tried tethering my iPad and another Evo 4G and the speedtest app resulted in ridiculously low speeds like 0.04Mbps download but a normal 1.4 Mbps upload speed.
I've been tethering my Evo 4G with 3 devices on a daily basis and used to get an average of 3 Mbps download and 1.4 Mbps upload speeds at my office. Is it possible that the built-in WiFi router is defective now?
A couple of other unusual changes that I noticed within the past few days:
- My 4G speed on the phone itself is faster now at my office. I used to average 2-3Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload at work every day. Now I've been clocking at an average of 6 Mbps download and 1.45 upload. Maybe Sprint improved service in my area?
- I checked my latest Sprint bill and noticed I used an unusual and huge amount of 4G data last month. I used to average 2-3GB of data per month but this September I used 12.2GB. I was shocked when I saw that. I don't think I'm being throttled because my phone is still running fast on 4G.
- My billing cycle starts every 3rd of the month (about the same time the slow WiFi tether problem started)
- I started getting "Low Internal Storage Space" messages
I've been searching other threads with Slow WiFi Tethering problems and so far I've done the following in attempt to troubleshoot and still got the same slow speeds:
- Wiped Cache Partition and Wiped Dalvic Cache using ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.0.5. I read somewhere in the forums that this may increase 4G speeds. This did free up some memory and cleared up my "Low Internal Storage Space" message.
- Moved the 'fixroute.sh' file to another location (as instructed from another thread)
- Uninstalled and reinstalled WiFi Tether 2.0.5 (been using that since last year), WiFi Tether 2.0.7. (Same results), and WiFi Tether 3.1. Beta 6 (Does not work)
- Tried 4G at home and friend's house about 5 miles away and got the same sluggish results.
I'm wondering if anyone else has a similar problem where their WiFi tethering just stopped working as fast as it used to and what did they do to fix it? Is this a hardware problem?
By the way, I'm on a rooted stock 2.2 ROM, Pri 1.40_003
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!
Update:
My phone is still suffering from slow 3G/4G wireless tether today in Brooklyn, NY with 0.08 Mbs down / 1.76 Mbs up.
This past Saturday I did notice that while I was in South Amboy, NJ, I was able to wireless tether 4G signal at about 2.16 Mbps down / 0.73 Mbps up. Speedtests were about the same on the phone itself and on my laptop. Why was I able to tether faster there made me even more puzzled and ruled out that my phone's built in wifi router is defective.
I'm hoping I can get this fixed soon. I have no clue what else I can do to get my wireless tethering back up to speed...
Update:
2 days ago I followed instructions on how to fix download speeds by editing the phone's HTTP PD Proxy Port & HTTP PD Proxy Address.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=922978
After applying the changes I instantly got my WiFi tether speeds back! I ran speed tests on my ipad and was able to get as high as 5 Mbps down and 1.4 Mbps up. I waited until the next morning to try it at work (where I mainly tether) and to my disappointment my speeds were back to slow 0.1 Mbps down and normal 1.5 Mbps up. I checked my proxy settings to see if they reverted back but nothing changed. I then went back home and found that my tether speeds were slow there as well. This was really bothersome! I then decided to give up for now and just tether on 3G for now.
This morning I stumbled across another thread on filterproxy
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966418
I followed the instructions and was successful in tethering at 4G speeds! Whew! My speedtest's results:
Ping 353 (This increased dramatically. I normally get 75)
Download Speed 5.14 Mbps
Upload Speed 1.33 Mbps
I'll keep running speedtests though out the day and see anything changes. Hopefully this filterproxy solution will hold up. It's an extra step to configure my browsers to use the proxy whenever I tether but I won't complain because I got my 4G speeds back (For now).
My question for now is... How come I was able to run wifi tether without all these problems for over a year and then all of a sudden run into these problems?
I hope this helps anyone else who has slow tethering over 4G problems.
I've got the speedtest.net broadband app on my SGS2. When I had my 10mb virgin media connection on my PC, I was getting 9.5mb wi-fi download speed on the phone's speedtest app when the phone is right next to my PC. VM have now switched me over to 60mb on my PC and the phone is now giving me 15.9mb wi-fi with speedtest. Is that the maximum the phone can do via wi-fi or should it be capable of closer to 60mb? Or am I meant to switch off wi-fi and go to wi-fi direct?

Hi matey, yes I am, it was just installed this morning. Took a while for my 10mb speed to actually switchover to 60mb.
Are you using normal wi-fi or wi-fi direct?
Lots of problems with those superhubs squire.. it's recommended if possible to set it up in modem mode and use your own router. Im just on normal wifi at the moment nothing special hub is on modem mode got my router set up pretty standard after much research on the virgin forums mind! It's worth having a look there for configurations but beware there is hundreds of posters complaining Also i did notice that various s2 modems determine the speed of your broadband through your wifi and i use the kh3 as i find it the quickest of all the ones i've tested.

Hmm, interesting. How do I switch it to modem mode? I can setup my router again like I did with my previous VM cable modem and use the wi-fi from my own router if the superhub wi-fi is not up to the job. Having said that, I just did some wi-fi speed tests between my PC and laptop. Downloads speeds vary between 49 and 60mb, and one site reported my upload speed, but all the others couldn't read the upload speed.
What is the kh3 exactly?
Wow. In my country, 10Mbps is only by fibre... Average 3g connection is only 2Mbps

Apologies for late reply squire. If your speedtests are reporting good speeds at your laptop then your hub sounds like its working ok so good news there However if you wanted to boot into modem mode you can access the hub by typing http://192.168.0.1 into your ie search bar and logging in with the standard username - admin and pass wich is set at -changeme these can be changed from within.. once switched to modem mode the address changes to http://192.168.0.100.
The KH3 is a modem for the S2 which seems to work very well for me you can read a bit more about it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1656005 page 3 has a direct download. It is worth trying a few different ones though as whats great for one maybe not so for another! Hope this helps.
Thanks Juan, great info. Yes, download speeds to laptop are great, but all but one of the speed test sites are not able to report my upload speed. They report them fine on my desktop though, and that's connected via ethernet cable. I suppose it might be the superhub or possibly my laptop causing the error. But anyway, since this a phone forum, I'm probably going too much off topic.
I've yet to see anything on my N2 register more than 10mbps down or 4mbps up when using wifi as the data path. It doesn't matter if the speed test is using an internet-based speed testing server, or if I transfer a file to one of my wired LAN PC's.
Oddly enough, I sometimes get faster speeds with HSPA (25+ mbps). It doesn't matter what router I connect to (I have several AP's on my network) - whether at home, neighbors, work, or family. Both my N2 and my wife's show the same type of speed limit.
Not only is it slow, but it's very erratic. I've tried all the standard suggestions (turning of power save mode, always on during sleep, etc), but none of these matter. Both 2.4GHz and 5GHz have the same speed caps.
With all that being said, I'm curious:
What are your maximum DOWNLOAD speeds you've experienced using a WIFI connection?
I consistently get 20mbps+. On 5Ghz, Brighthouse networks, Orlando area, with Roadrunner lightning service.
I get the same as on my home wired computer... 30MB

Sure does make me wonder what's so special about my two N2's. Im running a stock deoxed, rooted rom. In fact, it's this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2091214
I wish I could say with confidence that the original unrooted rom was just as slow, but I didn't have it on my phone long enough to even test it...
What rom are you guys running?
I have gotten as high as 27-30 mbps down and 10.5 up. The down was on my home wifi. The up was in the wifi at work.
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement
I'm on stock everything. Only thing I've done is rooted and added the xposed framework to add apps to the multi Window.
I have comcast 50Mb down and 10Mb up I can ever exceed 20Mb down but somehow my upload goes over my 10Mb up
