I just upgraded to a rooted Stock Froyo release (3.26.651.6) and while the 2.0.5-pre07 Android tether works, I don't seem to get the good download speeds when I connect my laptop to it.
So the tether application shows speeds of 4-5 Mbps on the phone screen, but when I wirelessly tether to it and run a speed check on my laptop, i barely get 1Mbps, sometimes even around 500kbps. In fact this problem was even worse when I was on the earlier Android release on the phone. It has improved since the Froyo upgrade, but is nowhere close to the speeds that I would like
Any ideas if this is normal? Or am I missing something here?
what speed test are you using?
I know when I was rooted with 2.1 I was getting around 5-6mbps when using wireless tether with my laptop
2.2 opened rooted 2mbps usb tether 6mbps

I get anywhere from 2Mbps to 6.7 Mbps depending on location. (that's on 4g)
I'm seeing the same thing as darth. Speed tests (the speakeasy one) gives anywhere from 5 to 10 mbps on my phone but on the laptop its around 1 to 1.5. I wonder if encryption has anything to-do with it, I run the WiFi tether app on wpa2 aes with a not-so-short key. Maybe the encryption and the heavier processing slows it down? I'll test without encryption and post the results in a couple of hours.

The funny thing is if I share my internet connection using USB on 4G to my laptop, the speed is around 5 Mbps. So the slow speed is isolated to the wireless tether app and across all devices I connect to it.
On 3g with wifi tether pre7 i just did 1.7 meg down, and 0.34 meg up.

Yes, I tried again without encryption and that does not seem to be the slowing factor. 4g tethered using WiFi tether app gives 1mbps download and 200k up. On 3g, the tethering app gives 250k download and 20k up.
When I do the same speed test directly from the phone, it shows 5mbps down and 1mbps up on 4g, and 500kbps down and 50kbps up on 3g. So its definitely the app. But since this is a preview, I'm pretty sure the devs will get around to fixing it before too long.

I am using the Wifi tether app, but seem to be getting reduced speeds for whatever reason. When I run a speed test on my Evo I typically get 1+ MBps for download, but when I run a speed test on my computer I get something like .3 MBps (sometimes it peaks a bit higher, but rarely.)
I am running on a roaming network if that matters, and have rooted for the app via unrEVOked.
Are there some sort of settings that I need to change?
I also seem to get long periods of what I can only call my data timing out where it will not let me upload or download. It goes away on it's own after a while though.
Easy tether seems to work fine....
When I measured speed from speedest.net app on my evo with 4g on, I get between 3-4 mbps download speed - and web sites and such load very fast. But when I tether my evo with 4g on and measure the speed on my laptop, I get barely 0.2-0.3 mbps download - and watching streaming content of the laptop is useless - all it does is buffer forever.
Anyone know how to make this work?
Thanks!
No one has a clue?
What tether?
Via EVO on XDA app...
I am speaking about the wireless tether app
The latest version?...ie, one off market?
Via EVO on XDA app...
I am using "2.0.5 pre 8" which came with Fresh 3.2.0.0
I'm using 2.0.5 Pre 9 and with 4G am not really doing any better than you...then again, on the phone it's slow as crap, too.
I don't think it's your wifi tether...i think it's the app giving you false readings. I used to use usb tether (before EViO went to a kernel that wouldn't support it) and the speeds weren't any better.
You can see if it works on your kernel and verify wired vs. wireless speeds...
Bumping because of the same issue
I get 8 to 10 mbit consistantly on my 4G on my speedtest app and transfer speeds when downloading files on to my phone.
However, with Wifi tether I can't get any higher then roughly 1.5 mbps on my laptop. I've tried different channels, different security settings, no security at all... etc.
I do suspect it's a software limitation because the app itself is meant to tether 1x/3g speeds, and 3G itself i'd say averages between 500kbit to 1.5mbit download speeds(I'm talking roughly... could be faster or slower).
So my guess is the developers haven't bothered with the coding to make it work well with faster connections. There's no reason it should be a hardware limitation because our wireless chips are G and N compatible. I've gotten speeds around 17mbps up and down on wifi on my evo.
I think you may be right, as I'm starting to hear from quite a few people that are thinking the same thing. Everyone has crazy speeds with the SpeedTest App, then are lucky to hit 1meg with the computer.
Can someone with the "correct" kernel test the wired tether speeds???
EDIT: Just tried Calk's EViO Beta which worked with wired tether and the speed is just as slow.
The question now is, does the Sprint HotSpot tether at 4G speeds? As I said before, Calk released a framework flash that allows the use of the HotSpot without it on your plan, but it won't work (for anyone) on 4G, and automatically kicks down to 3G...
Fixed the 4G issue!
This was posted by creator of wifi-tether as a possible fix, I tried it and it fixed our issue. I now get full 8mbps download via wifi tether.
To make sure things go smooth, I would make sure wifi tether is NOT running in the background
Go into terminal on phone or adb via computer:
adb shell
su
rm /data/data/android.tether/bin/fixroute.sh
Not sure why this fixes it, but not complaining

Deleting fixroute.sh mad wireless tether lose my internet connection after about 30 seconds. Did he have an updated script?
I had a similar problem. Fixed it by setting my setcpu profile to performance for the time I was tethering.

glad to hear the developer is working on the issue.
anyone hear of a work around for devices that can not connect to an "ad-hoc" wifi hotspot?

Now the problem...speedtest just on the phone show about 3.8 adverage Mbps but when i use wireless tether says connected at 24Mbps but speed test show only about .75Mbps (speedtest.net) My bars are full and labled "H". I had att and on the nokia n97 when wireless tethered i was getting almost 2Mbps again using speedtest.net. Any ideas why its slow slow when tethered? or how to fix it???? Thanks!

Just FYI I am using wireless tether 2 0 5 pre15
I also have this problem, it behaves the same way on the g1.
I had this problem since 11/30 and finally its back up to speed today 12/9.
My speeds went down to .10-.40m and pages wouldnt load and had to diagnose connection with IE8. It was horrible and I couldnt figure out why.
===
Heres what I did but I dont know which step fixed the wireless tether.
Installed easy tether and pdanet on g2 and pc.
Tethered with each one for several times a day.
I then tethered with the tmobile wireless tether and usb tether.
Again with each one.
Then leave the usb cable attached and dont use the above tether options.
Start wireless tether and speed should be normal.
If speeds are normal then all is fine, if not idk.

what kind of speeds are you getting now? FYI I am using Chorme
My avg speeds at home is 3.0-4.0mbps tethered because I only get 2 bars and it jumps from hdspa to umts.
I get this speed using android and tmobile tether.
With easytether and pdanet the speeds go down to 1.0-2.0mbps, dont know why.
I also changed the ssid, dont use android or tether as part of the ssid.
Changed the channel, checked the box for disable wake lock and disable screen lock.

But if you use Tmobile tether don't they charge you and extra $15 a month?
Whats with the 14.99 fee? I tether on my g2 everyday useing wireless hotspot with a WEP key and i get no messages GB this month....no restriction or throttle....

I tried using the tether built in to the phone and your right no data charge. But its freaking slower than Android Tether. Im only getting about .5Mbps. My phone on its own is running over 4Mbps. There has to be a solution to this! AHHH
Ok, I'm trying to figure out the fix, in case it happens again.
Did you try wireless tether on a different pc?
What was your speeds on your pc and other pc using easytether and pdanet?
Did you leave easytether and pdanet software installed on pc and phone?
Did you do a reboot AND not root, then use tmobile wireless and usb tether?
Try running tmobile wireless tether and android wireless together to see which one connects at a faster speed.
i cant for the life of me get 4G speeds over tethering...doesnt matter which tether app i use, or even usb tethering eithier..usning miks 4.61 now, but have tryd on many other roms...i live in a 4G town and would like to tether with the speeds i get...please help...ty in advanced....

What kind speeds are you getting? Some people have issues with the tether such as almost bottle neck speeds.
anywhere from .50 mbs to 2 mbs...the same on 3G as 4G...if i run speedtest app i get 5-9mbs on 4G, but run the test on the pc that is tethering off of the phone and its anywhere .5 to 2mbs

For some reason that seems to happen to a few people.
There was a thread that was saying that you may have better speeds if you use a proxy on the pc with proxy on the tether.
how do u use a proxy ? this is my 3rd Evo and they have all had this issue...my wifes does the same thing too...
If you open the settings of the wireless tether, scroll all the way down to lan setting, select a point, then in your broswer, go to lan settings, and input the same address.
i did that in my firefox and phone...no noticable difference in speed
You have gone thru 3 evo's trying to get wifi tether to work at 4g? Try running a log cat and post it here while your connected to 4g and trying tether

I've been tethering my Evo 4G for about a year now and all of a sudden, a few days ago, I noticed my WiFi tether speeds dramatically decreased, especially when 4G is turned on. When I run speedtests directly on my Evo 4G I would get an average of 6 Mbps download and 1.4 Mbps upload. When I run speedtest.net on my laptop that is WiFi tethered I would get an error "Configuration Load Failed" and my browsing is extremely slow. I tried my desktop computer and got the same error message and dialup like browsing speeds. I tried tethering my iPad and another Evo 4G and the speedtest app resulted in ridiculously low speeds like 0.04Mbps download but a normal 1.4 Mbps upload speed.
I've been tethering my Evo 4G with 3 devices on a daily basis and used to get an average of 3 Mbps download and 1.4 Mbps upload speeds at my office. Is it possible that the built-in WiFi router is defective now?
A couple of other unusual changes that I noticed within the past few days:
- My 4G speed on the phone itself is faster now at my office. I used to average 2-3Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload at work every day. Now I've been clocking at an average of 6 Mbps download and 1.45 upload. Maybe Sprint improved service in my area?
- I checked my latest Sprint bill and noticed I used an unusual and huge amount of 4G data last month. I used to average 2-3GB of data per month but this September I used 12.2GB. I was shocked when I saw that. I don't think I'm being throttled because my phone is still running fast on 4G.
- My billing cycle starts every 3rd of the month (about the same time the slow WiFi tether problem started)
- I started getting "Low Internal Storage Space" messages
I've been searching other threads with Slow WiFi Tethering problems and so far I've done the following in attempt to troubleshoot and still got the same slow speeds:
- Wiped Cache Partition and Wiped Dalvic Cache using ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.0.5. I read somewhere in the forums that this may increase 4G speeds. This did free up some memory and cleared up my "Low Internal Storage Space" message.
- Moved the 'fixroute.sh' file to another location (as instructed from another thread)
- Uninstalled and reinstalled WiFi Tether 2.0.5 (been using that since last year), WiFi Tether 2.0.7. (Same results), and WiFi Tether 3.1. Beta 6 (Does not work)
- Tried 4G at home and friend's house about 5 miles away and got the same sluggish results.
I'm wondering if anyone else has a similar problem where their WiFi tethering just stopped working as fast as it used to and what did they do to fix it? Is this a hardware problem?
By the way, I'm on a rooted stock 2.2 ROM, Pri 1.40_003
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!
Update:
My phone is still suffering from slow 3G/4G wireless tether today in Brooklyn, NY with 0.08 Mbs down / 1.76 Mbs up.
This past Saturday I did notice that while I was in South Amboy, NJ, I was able to wireless tether 4G signal at about 2.16 Mbps down / 0.73 Mbps up. Speedtests were about the same on the phone itself and on my laptop. Why was I able to tether faster there made me even more puzzled and ruled out that my phone's built in wifi router is defective.
I'm hoping I can get this fixed soon. I have no clue what else I can do to get my wireless tethering back up to speed...
Update:
2 days ago I followed instructions on how to fix download speeds by editing the phone's HTTP PD Proxy Port & HTTP PD Proxy Address.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=922978
After applying the changes I instantly got my WiFi tether speeds back! I ran speed tests on my ipad and was able to get as high as 5 Mbps down and 1.4 Mbps up. I waited until the next morning to try it at work (where I mainly tether) and to my disappointment my speeds were back to slow 0.1 Mbps down and normal 1.5 Mbps up. I checked my proxy settings to see if they reverted back but nothing changed. I then went back home and found that my tether speeds were slow there as well. This was really bothersome! I then decided to give up for now and just tether on 3G for now.
This morning I stumbled across another thread on filterproxy
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966418
I followed the instructions and was successful in tethering at 4G speeds! Whew! My speedtest's results:
Ping 353 (This increased dramatically. I normally get 75)
Download Speed 5.14 Mbps
Upload Speed 1.33 Mbps
I'll keep running speedtests though out the day and see anything changes. Hopefully this filterproxy solution will hold up. It's an extra step to configure my browsers to use the proxy whenever I tether but I won't complain because I got my 4G speeds back (For now).
My question for now is... How come I was able to run wifi tether without all these problems for over a year and then all of a sudden run into these problems?
I hope this helps anyone else who has slow tethering over 4G problems.
