once the evo root is released to the public will it be possible to use google nav with turn by turn voice?
Not sure if I reading this wrong, but isn't all 2.1 devices available to using Google Nav with Turn-by-Turn voice navigation?
i assume so. but from my understanding sprint blocks the voice part so u would have to look at the phone to get the turns. i wanna be able to just put the phone on car charger and lay it down and have the google nav lady tell me the turns as there coming up. like with sprint nav.

Wow, thats the first I heard of that, and totally lame. Hopefully that turns out to be misinformation.

google nav is only on 2.0 and above devices. google maps works on all android devices
Just to clarify... The Evo does have Google Navigation with voice turn by turn. Root is not needed and Sprint does not block that functionality.
Yeah, they showed them using it at the Google I/O and even sent the maps to the device
I confirm this. I use Google Nav over Sprint nav all the time on my Evo. It's awesome.

Hi all. I was one of the people moaning about the woeful volume levels on my T-Mobile UK Desire. I solved the issue by flashing with a generic ROM (although it seems to be a Virgin Media ROM judging from the bookmarks)
Anyway, being in the UK I didn't have access to the free Google Navigation...I even gave the Brut hack a try but uninstalled it due to it's unstable nature and lack of features.
Well, I've just been prompted to update to Maps 4.1.1 and I now have navigation. Fully functional, with the arrow and the street name (both missing in the hacked version)
Is this a general roll out by Google? Is this now available to everyone, even on branded ROMs, or is this an added bonus of flashing a generic ROM?
Let me know
UPDATE:
Google officially verify Navigation: http://www.google.com/intl/en_uk/mobile/navigation/
I'm not using the desire (nexus user here) and navigation appears to be working ok for me as well!
Haven't recently updated maps (was on 4.1.1 before) so they must have allowed it to work in the UK now w00t!
glad to hear you got the volume sorted... no navigation or update to maps here.. i cant even seen google maps in the market even though it cam pre installed on my phone.. .bummer
I didn't even notice I had this. When I got my Desire, the update to maps was one of the first things it asked me to do.
I added the Brut hack because I just assumed it wasn't there.
It does state it is in beta still but yea, seems Navigation is included now.
Working for me here to on my Desire. Just going to remove the brut hack to test it works without that...
[Edit] Yeah, it works fine with the Nav Launcher and Brut hack, excellent!
Well spotted Aitese!!
I hadn't bothered downloading the update to maps as I was using Brut maps and it worked well enough for me. However downloaded the update today, selected that newer version of maps for navigation and it is working. Haven't compared it against the cracked version (sat in an office) but looks to have more information on the screen etc.
Have you got some screenshots? I've got Google Maps 4.1.1, but it all looks the same for me....what am I missing?

Can't do screen shots as I don't have all the development junk here but just search for a destination and when it finds it you should have several options, show route, navigate or street view. The navigate option wasn't there when I first got the phone last week.
Am I right in thinking the option "navigate" should be right under "show on map"? If so, I've not got this. I'm running the stock rom with Google Maps 4.1.1. Iv'e never applied any hacks to get navigation in the past.
If I'm doing something wrong, please let me know as I'd love to get this working.

Cool, working now. Had to reboot the phone to get it.... w00t!
Yea, that's where it appears on mine.
I select 'Directions' from the menu, enter my destination, then under 'Show on Map' I get the 'Navigate' option.
I've uninstalled the Brut hack now and it's still there.
working for me on T-Mobile UK
Happy days! I wonder how none of the tech blogs have spotted this.
Yep, definitely working for me on T-Mobile.
Shows up on my phone now after a reset, sweet. Shame I don't drive
Get the impression it might be a mistake though, looked at a google forum thread where someone mentioned on the 14th that they had navigation working on the 14th of April on his Nexus one, and a Google employee responded a couple of days later saying it was only enabled in the US.

I've had 4.1.1 on for a while so not sure this is version dependant (certainly haven't noticed it up until now anyway).
FWIW, Maps is on my T Mob handset as well, and has been since I got the phone wed /thurs last week.
I haven't tested the reliability of it though, but it's def there.
I'll try it out on the journey home...
Works fine for me on generic HTC ROM...bonus!! Does say it's beta but meh
Tmob, works fine. Announces it is a beta.
Hi, I just downloaded Fresh 3.2 and Sprint Navigation has been deleted, how do I get it back because I really like it.
Look in the fresh-removed-apks (or whatever) folder in your SD card. However, Google Nav is sooo much better.
Agreed... google navigation is WAY WAY better. And it is integrated with everything, so all you have to do is tap an address and get nav directions for it.
I prefer Sprint Nav for driving. Google Nav always gives me the wrong directions.
google nav has the worst voice ever for calling out directions. I mean it is worse them my 7 year old stand alone gps that i got for 200$ 7 years ago. Plus it doesnt handle traffic nearly as well.
I can see it being better if you dont have it acctually talk and dont use the trafficfeature though. otherwise i would rather wait the 45 seconds for sprint nav to log in then listen to an hour + or googlenav voice.

I agree Pico SUCKS (the default voice), you should check out loquendo's tts voice. It is MUCH better.
http://www.loquendo.com/en/android/index.htm
for loquuendo people say it doesnt know what to say for RD or St abbreviations though i am sure that will get fixed eventually. do you have issues with it (seems like it woudl be a pretty common problem for nav)
I may try this out you are right it is 100 times better then pico though.
I could have be wrong but the final of cm 6 has a new voice.it sounds like a person instead of a robot.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
wouldnt be supriseing if it did but i dont use CM so looks like my best bet if i want to use google nav is to try loquendo's tts app and see how it works jsut not sure i want to spend 5 bucks for a voice when i dont have problems with sprint normally.
I haven't had any problems with it personally. I can understand the hesitation to spend extra. But Pico is just that bad to me lol. As far as cm6s voice. I saw that when I flashed today...is called espeak but i cannot for the life of get it to work. Though with loquendo is not very high on my to do list.
Part of my upgrade from orange was free orange maps. Obviously had no need for it with android by decided to check it out.
What surprised me is that its actually a workable sat nav, fully voice guided and it orientates itself via the compass too, same as google navigation (only slower as the accuracy of google navigation is better)
My main point is that why can only orange do this on wp7 and no one else?
Some other carriers do it. They say its officially coming with Mango.

I did read that this morning and im sure with nokias help will be very good. I was just wondering why orange and some other carriers have got apps that do it, yet theres no third party apps that do it properly.
Look for Drive on in the marketplace... i think it may support europe. It's still beta but does turn by turn and voice.
You really need on board storage for pan EU use
Sent from my HD7 T9292 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
Drive on is horrible. There is no landscape, no compass orientation, the voice is so low, you need to hold it to your head to hear it, the voice is unintelligible, the voice gives the next turn too early, the Speedo does not work, no 3d, there is no search by name (you can'tsearch for a business name, you must enter an address.
honestly, bing maps is better than drive on.
/rant
sorry about that. On the plus side, it's free. It is in beta, so maybe these problems will be sorted out.

Anyone try the new "Turn by Turn Navigation" app (released 26 May 2011)? I just downloaded the trial version. I am planning to give it a go on my way home tonight. Looks promissing!

So far has the cleanest UI for any of the nav Apps. A - B is still my favorite but Morton (the developer) pulled it from the marketplace in lue of copyright stuff...
A - B had 3D view.... I dont know why but for some reason I am hung up on that. Before my Samsung Focus I had the Touch Pro 2 and was running tomtom and then also would use android on it from time to time. I LOVE Google Navigator. That's sort of what A-B reminded me of with the 3d view using the sat/aerial view
I've spoken with the developers of Drive on, Silver Nav and Turn by Turn Nav and they all say 3d view WILL be implemented just not for at least 3 to 4 months. Pretty much right along with Mango. I dont know anything about coding but if an app that has one guy alone working on it could impliment it how could a team of developers working on these other apps not. Unless, again its some copyright stuff which I wouldnt be suprised of.
Just my 2 cents. Right now turn by turn is the best available on the market.

I tried "Turn by Turn" by GPS Tuner and found it fantastic.
The UI is clean and polished.
Voice is loud (English only)
The app is really reliable and fast.
You shall not hesitate.
Turn By Turn = WIN!
Just downloaded the trial 'Turn By Turn' and it works in Australia... The UI is the most polished of all the navs I've seen for WP7 and is WP7 worthy...
After a minute of playing around I committed and bought it...
Turn by Tirn
Turn by Turn is great. Voice is nice and loud and I find it to be accurate. I have also tried Silver Navigator and find it to be OK. I have now loaded the trial version of GPS Voice Navigation and will be trying it today.
I'll be interested to know how GPS Voice Nav works for you. I tried it yesterday, and it had some real problems (I described them in the other thread).

OK tried GPS Voice Navigation and had some issues. Alerts are given in feet rather than tenths of a mile. I can't sit there and try to determine how far 2360 feet is. It also tells me to "turn" about 50 feet before the turn. These are two behaviors that are different than a dedicated GPS and NOT an improvement.
Ok,
After one week of use I can say I find Turn-by-Turn Navigation' really great. It works well.
The only bug I notice is the following: when there is a rundabout, it says "At rundabout..." and nothing more, no direction, it does not tell which exit is the right one (?!) Am I the sole one?
I can't find Turn-By-Turn anywhere in the Marketplace. Any help?
Just went onto marketplace then... Turn By Turn is now at the top of the 'Navigation' section so you shouldn't even have to search...

I just updated google maps on my SGS2, and for some reason the navigation portion gets soo choppy and inconsistent, i got lost 3x.... finally i said F it and found my way around town. Was there any problems for any of you google map users after the update?
Definitely just you.
Google maps itself has always worked great for me. Some phone had ****ty gps so any navigation app would suck, but that is not the case with this phone.
Google and “suck” don’t go in one sentence.
Hey Guys,
I've searched and searched and searched (albeit I admit I suck at searching), and cannot find anyone talking about this. Thus here I am. Even the Google Product forms seem to have zero answers for me (and no one answering me there), and thus why I'm here. I also don't know if this is the right place to ask, but here goes anyway:
The new (pretty) Google Maps/Nav works on my S3 on Cyanogen mod: as in, I can search the map, use it and start using navigation ... BUT, if I switch to a different app (desktop screen, check sms, mail, settings, anything that isn't the navigation app) while live navigation is running, it'll reset back to the nav search screen BUT live navigation will keep running in the background (voice + GPS still running) and the map will NOT show any navigation.
To recreate for me the steps are:
1) Load up navigation and navigate somewhere, anywhere.
2) Switch to a different app.
3) Go back into navigation. Instead of being presented with the route (live nagivation) I'm presented with the nav search screen.
If I click the 'back' button, I get a regular ol' map. Searching for any route while the old nav is running will cause the Maps app to crash. The only error message I get if I get it to crash is: "Google Maps has unexpectedly closed."
I have tried re-installing the new Google Maps. I have even tried doing a complete phone wipe, also didn't help.
The only thing that sort of seems to do 'something', is if I clear the Google Maps/Navigation cache, force stop it, and then start again. Then I'll be able to use the quick app switch (pressing home button for a few seconds) to switch in and out, but that's about it .. and that only works for one nav route. After that first one if I try again it'll start crashing again.
Has anyone ever experienced anything like this? Or point me in the right direction?
Thanks!
p.s. I did post in the google product support form, no responses there yet

I can't reproduce the issue you are having (I'm on TW 4.1.2, though), but I have had my own set of issues with it. If you disable wifi and network location (to keep the Nlp wakelocks under control), sometimes when the GPS locks it still shows and old location. Only way to fix is to wipe data.
Since the fix is the same, I'm going with bug in the app. Old version was better in pretty much every way.
Don't forget that recently google made a lot of changes to maps. I'd imagine they know about a lot of the bugs people are having and will probably fix in the near future.
When you try to go back to navigation, do you select it from the notification area?

Yeah, I selected it from the notification area.
IF, and ONLY IF, I clear the Google maps area will navigation still work if I reselect it from the notification area and/or the quick switch thingy. But that niceness only lasts for one route :-/ After that, it's back to always search menu for me.
It all really sucks because for work I do get a lot of texts or calls, which means if I'm using navigation ... yeah ... I basically have to reset navigation every single bloody time I get a notification :-/
I've never used it, but what about Samsung Drive Link? Isn't that supposed to provide an interface for when you're driving? Maybe using it will allow you to switch normally. Thats just a complete guess, like I said, I've never used it.
Only other option, and probably the best one, is to use an older version of maps. I posted one in a similar thread to this in the Themes section.

I took your advice and found the old google map APK. <sigh> I already miss the integration and style of the new one, but heck you are so right: the old one works perfectly! Keeping that.
Thanks for the idea!
Now if we could only get Google to fix the new maps app bugs.
I'm under the impression they are working on it.

I have been having the exact same issue ever since the big Google Maps interface update.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S3, stock.
