NOTE: THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN FIXED, See this post #97 by "teppic74" for how I fixed the phone
My flatmate recently got a Desire from Vodafone, it's got their latest ROM on it with all their bloatware.
I told him I could debrand it, but the goldcard method didn't work because he had bootloader 0.83.
So I followed a thread to this site on how to downgrade the bootloader:
http://www.tolxdorff.net/tutorials/?step=2
So I did step 4... and then the screen went blank. I left it for a while, I thought it may be installing...
After a long time, I pulled the battery out and rebooted the phone ... I'm pretty nervous by this point LOL
Anyway, the phone reboots and I can hear the annoying HTC chime, which never happened on the Voda rom...
But I can't see anything. It appears that the phone is booting up, but the screen is not working.
Anyone got any advice on what I might do to fix this or am I toast? Grateful for any advice.
Have you try it again or download a original rom (maybe on vodafone...on my o2site it give a original rom and also here on xda)...or have you tried unrevoked...what say the h boot now..?????
with kind regards...Alex
Unforunately that's the problem... the phone is working and booting up, but the screen is blank... so I can't see anything.
I'll try to find and flash the voda rom, that's a good idea

you have no acsess to bootloader or recovery.....??
try vol down (hold it) and phone on (power)...
Well... I think I can get into recovery... it's just I can't tell because the screen is not showing anything...
if I was to make a noob guess at what's wrong, and this is unsubstantiated, it's that it's a new desire with SLCD screen and that it's get the driver for the AMOLED screen installed when I downgraded...
Two more people over at modaco at reporting the same issue, I think:

Test your theory.
Pull out the battery and put it back in.
Press and hold volume down and birefly press power on.
Keep volume down pressed for 5 seconds, then release it.
Count 20 seconds, then press the power key briefly once more.
You should now be in fastboot.
Connect your phone to the USB port and it should list it self when you execute fastboot devices.
If see it listed, you can restore the original ROM via the vodafone RUU file.

Correct that's me.
I tried a normal boot, unrevoked found the phone but got stuck waiting for boot loader.
I did follow the test you mentioned regarding fastboot.
Windows did make a bleep bleep sound when i plugged it in, but when I ran adb devices (is that what you meant when you asked "is it listed"?), there were no devices listed.
The phone does make the annoying htc sound on normal boot... just no screen

Thanks I did try to flash an original ROM... but I get the same problem I had before when running the RUU (error 140)
If I find a .92 ROM, i'm not sure I can install it without seeing what's on the screen though...

ADB will not find your phone in fastboot. You need to download fastboot binary and run fastboot devices to list devices in fastboot mode. If you use windows, you also need to install the fastboot windows driver. (I think you can find that in the android SDK)
I no longer even get the startup beep. Think I am totally screwed?

I'm getting the bleep bleep cause I tried to install the generic rom... you're probably not getting it because you only tried to root the existing rom, is that correct?
yeah i used this driver...open attached htm file (if you have download unrevoke...its also in) adb
I think I have bricked my phone. I followed the instructions listed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834228
but have when i restart the phone, it is just stuck on the words HTC
doesn't load into anything else.
What should I do?
Well as your phone powers on its not a proper brick, when it powers on and gets to the first boot screen like you say there is usually like a 99% chance it can be recovered.
Edit: stupid thanks button!
How long do you leave it on the htc bit before you power down again? maybe your just not waiting long enough.
left it on for 10 minutes.
all it says is "HTC" in green...
Are you able to get into hboot? Try holding the volume down key while you turn on the phone.
One easy thing to try would be to flash an RUU, make sure you find the correct one for your phone (Z or G2) and make sure its the latest one around.
That will return your phone to stock so you can attempt to root again.
yes, yes i can get into HBOOT.

What about recovery? There should be a recovery option in the hboot menu.
Thank you so much!!
Have you got a custom recovery?
If so, flash a new rom
I tried recovery. It turns into a blackscreen with a phone in the middle and a read triangle with a ! on top of it.
I dunno if that is telling me to not turn off the phone.

no, from your description above, you just have stock.
I have an idea that you should be able to fasboot install a new recovery, then from there you will be able to flash a new rom.

I know some. But not everything. Only the very basics. I have had a rooted hero before. I have had some experience with it.
I am not able to use adb tho. (As in, can't get it to work currently)
when i type "adb remount"
it says "error: device offline"
I have plugged in the USB cable.
basically all you need to do is find the clockwork mod recovery image file
put it in your adb folder
turn phone on hboot, and select fastboot
then type the following into your pc
"fastboot flash recovery [recovery.img]"
obviously replace [recovery.img] with whatever your recovery is called (and no [])
then you should be able to boot into clockwork mod recovery and from there you can install a new rom.
before I really do anything wrong here, would you be able to direct me to an image file?

Hi, I have searched everywhere on XDA and on google and couldn't find a solution for my problem.
I wanted to root my device using VISIONary+. When I tried to do the permanent root, it rebooted my phone once, and then black screen, reboot a second time and I get stuck on the recovery screen.
I took out the battery, sd-card and sim, tried again, same result.
If I try to do a wipe (both data/factory reset and cache partition), I end up with the same result.
When I try to "Apply sdcard:update.zip", I get -- Invalid operation. -- and then the same result.
What causes this to happen and how can one fix this?
Oh and on the screen it says: "E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command"
Android system recovery <3e>
...
Reboot system now
Apply sdcard:update.zip
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition
--------
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
Did the temp root (which you WILL have done first) work ok? Did you remember to tick the required options?

Thanks for the quick reply!!!
Yes. The the temp root was fine. When I went to do the permanent root, it asked for root access, I selected "allow access" and then my phone rebooted.
Now I'm stuck with a black screen, a phone and a red triangle (Recovery mode).
Racking my brain as this happened to me but was a while ago now.
There is a way to reboot the phone without pulling the battery, some combination of volume button and power button but failing that if you pull out battery the phone should reboot as usual. If you can get it to there double check the Visionary thread to ensure every step is followed.
Sorry, one question I should have asked is what HTC version are you on? You will probably need to downgrade or use the gold card method if it's 1.82+

Even I take the battery out, I still end up back in the recovery mode.
Is this gonna cost me to go to go back to the store and have them fix it for me?
I would love to be able to do it myself.
And yes, I followed every step.
Sorry, it's the software info I need (settings -> About Phone).
I will bet that you're on 1.82+ in which case you will need to create a goldcard (there's a recent thread in the General section on this matter) and downgrade the software first.
That was what I had to do.
Turn the phone off by what ever means then press vol - TOGETHER with the power button (takes you to recovery) then select reboot option there (again, can't remember what the default options are but one should be for rebooting device.

All the help forums require me to be inside android and set it to be HTC sync... Doesn't help much if I can't start android in the first place.
I went to the reboot device, and I'm still stuck... How can I get out of it?
Nothing I own has windows on it thus I did manage to sort this out, when I was in same boat, without windows thus without HTC Sync. I just needed a windows machine (work) to create the gold card.
I am almost certain that I could get the phone to reboot after getting to the same stage using the volume buttons and power button from the red triangle screen (sure it was vol+ And power button (press vol+ first). You should then see a new menu.

I can access the menu. It's vol+ first, and then power button. As I said in the first post, I am presented with 4 menu items. None of them is helping me.
Is there a way to flash from recovery mode, etc? Or do I have to go back to the store and have them fix this for me?
Even I create the gold card, I can't do anything in recovery mode. I need to get out of recovery mode first.
I've googled some more, and I found that you can recover using backup.zip, but I like I said, I get "-- Invalid operation. --".

I suggest you read the notice from jcase... I'm guessing you were runiing gb?
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
you ruu was too old - this version doesn't have the required drivers for SLCD.
That means, you phone probably does work, but the screen is black.
I don't know how to solve this (probably by flashing the newer RUU, Version 2.29....) exactly, but hopefully this gives you a clue where to look for a fix.
There were many people experiencing this after Froyo was available. They did the ota-update, then noticed, that it wasn't possible to root with the new bootloader (Version 0.93ish) at that time, which was installed along with the froyo-ota, so they tried to downgrade back to 2.1 and ended up where you are. (bootoader .80 instead of .83ish).

Probably the easiest and safest way ist to boot into fastboot although you don't see it and flash the newsest ruu,
so:
1) make sure, phone is off (i.e. pull battery and put back in)
2) push and hold "back" and hit power.
3) wait 30 seconds or so, to be on the safe side
4) connect phone to pc via usb
5) run RUU on PC, version 2.29.405... (RUU, not OTA!)
And make sure to have some juice in your battery
Here you can get the RUU:
RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed.exe
Its on >>Shipped Roms<< , 7th from top.
btw. am I assuming correctly that your phone is unbranded?

did you see any provider logo during startup? Or any preinstalled apps or bookmarks which point into a provider's direction? Where did you buy it? And did you need a goldcard for rooting?
if you answer is no on every question, you're probably not branded.
Did you write down the version number before you did anything to your phone (when you have a .405. in your version number, your phone is definitely not branded).
Edit: but I really recommend to read the linked thread. My device is unbranded amoled so I never did any of this myself (apart from running a RUU), so always think twice before following my steps

no. You have booted into recovery before, didn't you? Now you do the same but use "back" instead of vol- , because you want to boot into fastboot.
All I wanted to say with this 30 seconds is to give it some time to boot into fastboot, thats all. Press and hold "back", press "power", release power, wait 3 seconds, release "back", wait 10 seconds and plug in usb, start ruu.
Thats all I wanted to say with my previous post. Sry, if it was confusing

If it is branded, you get a cid-error, so ruu wont finish. But your phone probably isn't branded, otherwise you would have come across problems during flashing custom roms or/or radios (-->goldcard). And because this doesn't seem to be the case, your device is not branded.
When the RUU is done, you phone is completely back to stock and you can do whatever you like to it...

Boot it holding the volume up button. This should get you into so-called "recovery" where you can, among other things, restore it to defaults.
If recovery also doesn't work (which would be unusual), boot it holding volume DOWN button. This will get you into a "download" mode where you can use ODIN to flash new recovery (such as CWM recovery which is very nice and powerful), or even flash entire firmware from scratch.
Good luck, let us know how it goes ~
[edit] oh and do all that while having it connected to USB power, in case the battery is empty.
still doesnt work

Could you clarify what happens when you do those methods exactly?
I think the download mode should basically always work...
[edit] oh wait, I think I mislead you by accident (sorry!). You should boot while holding HOME and volume up (recovery) or down (download).
stilll nothing

Anything doesn't work , When I boot while holding HOME and volume up (recovery) appears the blue advice in the upper left corner and about 2 segs after the cellphone restart again, again and so on, When I boot with the down (download) the process on kies working good but when ends the cellphone restart again, again and so on. I'm start to think that something in the hardware is damage :crying:
looks like you messed something up there...
Anyway, if your phone is rooted, and/or you don't care about warranty you can get it in download mode (you said it works fine with kies until reset, so I suppose it means that download mode is at least accessible).
And after that use Odin to reinstall the stock rom completely.
Or, again with Odin install custom recovery, and then whatever ROM you like.
While working with odin, be sure to stick to the guides here on XDA. (for a custom recovery see: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2364980)

If you're not entirely stock you'll have trouble using Kies.
I myself had trouble when tried to revert to stock ROM from CM.
It failed to restore NANDroid backup every time, and I also didn't succeed in flashing the stock image with Odin as well.
In the end, I succeeded with this ROM (which is modified stock TW), usin ODIN. You can try this, just read and understand the instructions in the thread before you do anything.
Ironically, after a couple of days after reverting to stock rom I was so annoyed by the speed decrease compared to CM, that I reinstalled CyanogenMod back, found TouchWiz stuff I missed via separate apps, and I'm pretty happy with it ever since.
Bottom Line: anyways, if you already on custom stuff with altered warranty, you must get custom recovery working first, then it will be simple.
