Yeah. Freaking ****. Divx/Xvid support is really whats still missing here. Where is the promised Divx support from HTC? It was just a rumour I guess. I dont care about 720p recording or encoding. But having native divx/xvid would rule for me. TV shows on the phone without the need to transcode.
Actually it does really take less then 5 minutes to transcode one. But that's still time and sometime you don't even have that.

An NVIDIA or ATI GPU can hardware encode a whole movie in pretty much under 10 minutes.
My i7 with hyperthreading on and overclocked to 3.5GHz can utilize all 8 threads and have a DivX movie converted to MPEG2 ready to play on a DVD in less than 15 minutes. Heck, I've even converted a 3 hour blu-ray movie to H.264 at full resolution on my i7 and it only took 4-5 hours.

you know that gives me even more reason why my still running but rather limp PC needs a full upgade.. i've been thinking of the I7 for a little while.
Shame about no native divx support.. its the one major thing i miss from my Omnia HD, lucky i still have it for my hols.. can't see an update coming to the desire

Remote browsing? (and other stuffs and fluffs)

Hello ladies, gents, killer droids and aliens.
A somewhat long time lurker finally decided to register myself
Anyway, it seems quite likely that I'll pull trigger on one Desirable droid in a near future.
But I have to know couple of things before I dive in head first into the world of droids.
So if any of you could answer those questions, it would be... in the word of Borat, "Very nice" Here goes nothing!
1. Is it possible to browse files in my PCs on my LAN via WLAN from desire?
2. If so, is it possible to stream files (mp3s and avi most likely) from there to be played on desire?
3. Lastly, can desire handle WPA2-PSK?
Cheers!
In answer to your first two, yes (using EStrongs File Explorer, although I'm sure other apps will do it too) and a hesitant yes. Hesitant because I use the Subsonic media server to do just that but that might not be what you're after. Not sure if anything else can do it as I haven't tried. Subsonic is incredibly easy to set up though, and a one-time donation gives you Android streaming for life.
Not sure about the third as my home uses standard WPA for legacy reasons. I'd be extremely surprised if it didn't though.
Hey thanks for a quick answer!
Hm that subsonic seems like it's only meant for music and not for movies and such hmm...
Well the reason I asked about WPA2 is that my other handhelds such as DS and PSP aren't supporting it in the first place (which is a kind of bummer, but I will never lower security for play stuff online in any case)
Yes to number 3.. i use that encryption at home and the desire connects no problem...

Ah yes, sorry, Subsonic is just for music, but it does that music very well!
Can't help with video streaming, but it wouldn't surprise me to see something that does it. There's already the Youtube and Beebplayer apps so it can't be hard to do the same for LAN based videos.
Thanks micks & Noiz!
Well, you can come quite far with couple of gigs of music (besides I already have iPod nano) but TV series and such are bit bigger than mp3s you know? So I wasn't all that sure if I wanted to transfer everything to the phone.
BTW are there any competent program which can run divx without any hitch? or is the "convert the avi file to something else" the way to go?
ATM converting to mp4 with x264 is the way to go. unfortunately.
I recall reading something about somthing, like "Divx playback out of the box" and that kind of fluff regarding Desire before...
Was it pure 100% BS then? .... sigh ....

BS? No.
Available out of the box? No.
Coming "soon" to an OTA update near you? Yes.
"soon" IE.... next year?
I've seen the slow update on the Hero, so I won't be holdning my breath on this.
(The very reason I didn't go for Hero in the first place, painfully slow updates)

I really wish I could be more specific, but "soon" is as close as it gets.. Hence putting it in quotes.
For now, I'd convert using something like Handbrake. Not an ideal solution as you always lose some of the quality when cross converting, but it's the best solution for the moment.
Yeah I understand that, that's the reason I asked "next year?"
Well, I guess the quality itself won't bother me, after all, it's just on 3.7inch screen.
The main "trouble" as I see is that, it takes such tremendious time converting files.
I mean it takes more time to convert file than show itself you know?
The reason I stopped watching stuff on my PSP, it just took way too much time.
the one worry i'd have about streaming is data usuage... if your on 3g etc.. if you have wi fi handy then great.. but i'd imagine streaming over 3g would eat data quite quickly
Oh I was talking about while I'm on my own network.
So no worries there. Thank you for your concern tho.
But your post reminds of me something, but is kinda OT, should I start a new thread about that, or should I keep going here?
Since nobody's protesting, I'll just go ahead and ask it.
I feel a bit torned about how much data plan I'll be using.
I will be checking and sending around 10 mails avg a day, maybe some net surfing (nothing heavy duty) maybe couple of youtube vids, no twitter or facebook.
Will 500mb/month suffice or will I use it up within couple of days? LOL
I srsly have no idea, so any insight will be appreciated!
well i have 50 megs per day (dont ask irish plans are $hite) actually its a pay as you go contract.. 50 megs a day for 99 cents.. never go over that to be honest.. i have email client on and browse the web a bit.. and market place.. wouldnt watch video etc or do streaming unless i'm on wireless network... i think unless your doing streaming or sending large emails you'd do well to use 500 in a month.. i know guys who are on 250mb for a month and they say it doesnt them fine..

I think it really depends on your usage. I suggest a data monitoring app such as 3G Watchdog. Run it for a few days and it'll give you a good guage as to how much data you're using.
Well micks, when you think about it you have 50mb a day!
that's total sum of 1.4 gig per month!
So it's like 3 times more than I was thinking about after all.
Fatman, true, however, the provider here are sneaky bunch who allows custmers upgrade on plan, but not downgrade!
Choises choises, just way too many choises tbh.
I have to decide if I gonna go for Legend or Desire in the first place.
I mean Legend got some seriously sexy outershell! But desire shines with raw poweeeerrr.
I'm just asking myself why HTC didn't make legend shell with desire internals!

few qustians before buying HTC DESIRE... please help

when you take pictuers on the HTC DESIRE
lets say when you take a picture holding the device on landscap - does it save the picture as landscap? i mean that does you have to do ROTATE to photos to save them on the computer?
is there any site i can see all the androind app now? so i can know what ill have and what i can't have..
or i have to check the market app only from a androind device?
thats it for now. still having problems deciding what phone to take - Desire or iPhone 4...
the bad thing that the desire have no front camera for future things like making video calls on fring or mesnnger...
p.s. sorry for my bad English.. hop you can help me! thanks!
Yes, if you take the picture in landscape, the picture will be saved in landscape. Same for portrait. In addition, you can edit the orientation of the photo in the photo viewer.
There is an official Android Market site. But it's not very helpful. You can't push applications to your device and the selections are not complete. Appbrain is a better alternative.
Btw, you should know that video calling is not a "future thing". That's what Apple wants you to believe. The front facing camera was so underutilized that manufacturers have since decided to abandon it. Once Apple adopted it, it's suppose to be the next big thing....sigh...
For finding all the available apps you can try http://www.androlib.com , but it might be a bit hard to find the things you want.
And regarding the videocalling, you can actually videocall with fring on your desire, but it obviously will use the rear facing camera. So it kind of depends on what you want to do, is it really i want to see someone when i call them or i want to show them what i am seeing at this moment.
well is there any HTC phone that is android with fron cam also? somthing like the desire.... ??
i think ill be using the fron camera a lot when i be abrod and want to make calls over fring with WIFI connection...
Quick question for you Amir...do you video call now? You say future things like you're expecting it to be the next big thing. It's been available for years. Why have you never thought to do it before but now seemingly would let it colour your purchasing decisions?
i had N95 for lots of time.. and i did use video call but by then it wans't possiple to use it over WIFI and with fring..
so i allways want that like this.
I had an N95 also and was able to use Fring to make Skype video calls a long time ago.
My question was basically , knowing that video calling is a requirement, why don't you stick with Nokia, who rarely leave out the front cam? Symbian is improving at a rapid pace to try and keep up.

There isnt no, the reason htc have left out the front camera is that its not supported by the os

That's not 100% correct. The camera hardware is supported just fine...the protocol that is used to make 3G video calls is what I think is missing (someone correct me if I'm wrong) and so negated the inclusion of a front cam.
I had a E71 but never used video calling once. I had it for 3 years also.

It's old tech but the carriers here in Europe REALLY thought it would take off. Obviously, Apple being Apple, people will start video calling like they've never done before.
Mp3 players were available before the iPod, but no one wanted them...until Apple did it. Mobile phones could install apps and surf the web before the iPhone...no one wanted to, until Apple did it. People have had cameras on their phones for years...but the dawn of the iPhone has seen it remain the most used camera of ANY kind in the world on Flickr since it was released. Tablet PC's wallowed in the wilderness of computing for 10 years before the iPad...now it's the hottest selling device this year.
Apple people tend to start doing things they had no inclination to do before Apple told them it was awesome to do said activity. Expect the same to happen to video calling.
To be honest right..... video calling is the thing of the ancient past. I'm sure the Pharaoh's used video calling in there time. But HD voice calling should be the future

Taking a picture while recording a video

They say that there is no stupid questions, only stupid answers so here it goes...
Is it possible to take a pic with camera while recording video? I mean, i know its not possible NOW, but can it be done somehow? Or this requires according hardware?
Hm, I would say its not possible, when you record the lens is open and taking a picture would make it close.
I'm not a photo expert, but I guess that with the right hardware this might be possible...
But when its not implemented in very expensive cameras I don't think we will be seeing this in a phone for a while!
Also there is a part in my mind that says that this is absolutely impossible.
Yea, was thinkin pretty much same, but then again...
Well you can never be too sure
Take a screenshot while recording video...
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
yes you can do it using a digital camera and a desire
one will record video for you and other will click pictures.
actually, I think this would be pretty easy with software. technically, a video is just a slideshow of pictures played at ~30 pictures a second. I am not an android developer but I wouldnt think it'd be that hard to just have the software grab one specific frame when you hit a button and save it as a seperate picture.

pop up play for HOX

Is there any such mod for the one X which is comparable to the "pop up play" feature in the SGS3?
This might be a deal breaker for me because i often watch a lot of video on the go to pass the time while travelling, i would like to be able to do other things whilst watching the video at the same time.
Maybe something for devs to work on if they havnt already done it?

Just like IPhone, Samsung Copies it and now everyone thinks It's revolutionary.
It's Nothing new, I've been using it for the last 6 months.
Overskreen- A pop up Browser that you can on top of the screen.
Stick It- A pop up video player which you can use on top of the Screen, And It's much better than Samsung's Pop up play, as you can use it with any media and as many videos at once as you like.

[Q] YouTube

Okay heres the issue I'm having with this tablet...I went to try it at a store as I wanted to check the beautiful screen and just the general unit. So to test the screen I decided to play the following video...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgKXcQ9PLuc&feature=youtube_gdata_player
The internet connection was perfect....anyways the video was stuttery and tbh I was a little dissapointed since its buttery smooth on my S3.
I would appreciate for you guys to test it on your Note's and let me know how the video plays. Its important that it doesnt have youtube or really HQ playback problems since I'm planning on purchasing it from America so returning it for a refund wont be an option for me (I'm in UK)
The tablet as a whole is truely an amazing piece of kit and I really wish I have been an idiot and missed something. I'm going to try and visit a different shop tomorrow so hopefully it was just because the unit has been abused by customers or something.
P.S. I dont mind this thread getting hijacked for other youtube problems/questions on the Note 10.1 2014.

Mine plays it smooth mate. Very slight jerkiness with the star movements but I think that's just due to the time lapse? You have to look hard to notice it. Want to try linking to another video that isn't time lapse?

Yeah I notice it then mainly too but tbh I noticed it different parts of the video again and again without trying to concentrate on it.
Why would time lapse matter? Plus that whole video is a timelapse so it should wither be all stuttery or play just fine really. I'm not an expert at this stuff as you can probs tell LOL just curious to why this tablet with the best screen on the market stutters with that video.

Not sure if this was already mentioned but the first link you posted actually links to a 3D version of the video. That might be why it played back funny on the note. Also, if you go through the youtube app you don't get the option to play the 3D version. Only if you play it through the web.

That is very strange. I would say you may have a bad device. Ask fir a replacement.
Okay I have a wierd issue on my Note when I play videos on youtube. Basically when watching a video in full screen mode and I change the orientation of the note the screen goes dim with a small box appears in the middle of the screen with appears to be signal bars at the bottom left of it.
Anyone experience this...I will take a screenshot when I finish work so yous can see what I mean but thought maybe in the mean time someone is/has experienced this before.
P.S I have no issues with signal or video quality during normal playback.
I just tried playing it back in the YouTube app and it stuttered very badly. I played it earlier on my son's iPad air and it played flawlessly. This is my 2nd note 2014 1st one had major screen issues.
Up until all of this Knox bs I've loved my Samsung devices, know it seems that it may be time to try something else. Fortunately I've got until Jan 15th to decide if I want to keep it or not.

See the weird thing is when I tried to play that video in some shops it failed miserably (before I had the Note 2014) yet now that I play it on my Note it plays flawlessly it's truly weird. I hope you figure out what the problem is.

Aye there must be something wrong with your Note then, I would deffo get it exchanged again or go to a different store since you probably got a Note from the same batch the last time you returned it.
