Question about upgrading... - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I have a question...
On the 25th of April, I joined my Moms Sprint plan, and signed up and got the Sprint Hero. I did this at Radioshack, and according to account management, I have an upgrade already? Says I recieved it on the first of May. Is this a real upgrade, or just a glitch in the system? My wife also signed up on that same day and had a upgrade as well, we used it to get a phone, and it went through and everything, so I assume it's real..
Anyways, my question. I'm wanting to upgrade to the EVO on the 4th, what do I have to do with my current Sprint Hero? I was wanting to sell it on eBay as they sell for ~$200, which would cover the Evo. But, do I have to wait a certain time frame before I can sell it since I just bought it on the 25th as it was discounted, not paying full retail? I'd rather sell it then doing the trade-in thing through radioshack and only getting half what it's worth.
Thanks for any responses. Hope this is clear on what I'm asking...

Upgrade, pay for the phone and sell your hero after.
or
Get a cheap prepaid phone or extra phone lying around the house.
Call and change the ESN number
Sell your Hero
Hold the cash until June 4th
This will give you plenty of time to customize the Hero and sell it as is.

Does the whole Radioshack making you stay with your phone for 181 days or whatever only apply to online? I didn't pay the most attention when it was all keeping set up, but I believe they said I need to keep the phone active for 30 days. So is it safe to assume that after the 25th I can go ahead and sell the hero and switch to whatever phone I want to? And would Radioshack still offer me the upgrade for the Evo if I no longer have my Hero and am just using some cheap phone?

If you're eligible for upgrade you'll be eligible at RS. They will be able to see your eligibility just fine. I WOULD however go to a Sprint corporate store and make sure you are eligible for an upgrade and not an EARLY upgrade. There is a difference in the amount you would be paying for the phone. Once you verify with them then head over to RS and pre-order.
By the way don't get the insurance through Radioshack. Get it through Sprint. Radioshack will tell you they give you a loaner phone but I believe it to be BS. Just pay the $7 through Sprint and eat the deductible. It's a better process overall.

it's an upgrade, according to sprint.com it's $150 off.
not sure why i'm eligble for an upgrade when i just got the line under 30 days ago..
i think i'll probably end up keeping the hero until i get the evo and then sell it to play it safe.

Can anyone else help with this situation? More answers would make me more comfortable. Don't want to be charged full price for the Hero or anything :\

As long as the system says you're eligible, its fine. Sometimes these things happen. You wont have any issues from the shack if you go ahead and use that upgrade. (Assuming you got it from a store and not online)
So, as said above, get your EVO then sell the hero to recover the cash
*I'm a manager for Radioshack if it makes you feel better*

Question about Phone Swapping on Account

Repost from the Official Preorder Thread:
I was 2nd at the Shack in the Boca Raton, FL Town Center Mall. To make it the upgrade work I had to upgrade another phone on my plan with the Evo, but I am hoping that once I have the hardware, I should be easily able to switch it to my phone with Sprint Customer Care.
I've been a Sprint customer for 12 years or so, and never had an issue with that before. The guys at Shack said they'd do the upgrade on the phone that's available, but don't count on the switch since the phone is still new. Is this a possible problem??
I already did the order, so the phone is mine....but it would suck to have to use another number, or wait to move my Evo to my phone number at a later date.
Can you ask them to not activate it? I'm in the same boat, but I ordered at Best Buy.
That's something that would be asked on Launch Day, but I'm kinda looking for some Sprint CSRs who troll these forums who may have some information. I think the guys at Shack were just being douches (you don't know douchebags like South Florida douchebags), but I could be screwed over somehow.
I asked the sprint customer support this and best buy. Sprint said no problem I can do it online with the ESN swap tool. Best buy just said bring all the phones and they will do it for me without charging the activation charges. I would ask at your best buy, if they wont you CAN do it online with the esn swap. You just have to make sure you move the other account off the evo onto a third phone before you try to swap to it.
Gracias sir. Explain the whole swap thing for me? I can't visualize what you are explaining.
I did the same thing the day the Moment came out. I bought the Moment at Best Buy. They activated it on a line I don't use (with the valid upgrade). I took it home and switched it (via Sprint's online tool) onto the line that I wanted to use it on. Then I put the old phone back on the upgraded line. No problem doing this at all.
Thanks, I figured they were just trying to **** with me to make sure I didn't give them **** somehow. I will be doing this on the 4th!

They will have to activate it at the shack for you to get your discount. And they weren't being douches, it is possible to get sprint to switch the devices for you once they are activated, but they don't have to do it if the phone hasn't been on the line for 30 days. So they gave the official CYA answer.
pwabbit hit it almost spot on. You will require 3 phones to do this. You will need to take the old phone, well call it flip (the line you are upgrading in to the store) they will upgrade it to the evo, you then go home and log in to sprint.com. Once logged in as the primary user, go to my account. Scroll down and you will see devices at the bottom (a list of them all). Next to the evo you just activated hover over i want to... and you will see activate a new phone. This will take you to the ESN swap screen, here you will transfer the line from the evo back to the flip. By doing this no line will be active on the evo. Then you will go back to the my accounts screen and next to your current phone (inmy case the hero) you will select i want to... and choose activate a phone. Here you can ESN swap to the evo. This makes the hero have no line activated on it. Finally you can go back to the my accounts screen and next to flip phonje select I want to... and activate a device, you can now ESN swap it to the hero. Now everyone has an adroid phone...enjoy.
Cliff Notes:
Login to sprint.com
under my accounts look for the deives list, in the i want to menu next to the phone (not the sidebar) there is an activate phone option. Use this to move the line on the evo to an extra phone, then move your line to the evo. This will require a minimum of two esn swaps.
any questions ? there will be a test on this
Ok sweet. It looks like I'll only need 2 phones though. My mom is planning on keeping her BlackBerry, and my Hero will be sent to a fellow XDA member who was interested in it. Very excited.
I have done this probobly 6 times already
As long as one line on your account that is eligable for an upgrade, they will take care of it.
Just tell them what number you would like to use, and they will update it, but you have to physically have the phone that has the number that is eligable for an upgrade with you.
So make sure if you are using a family members phone for an upgrade, you bring the phone with you.
As advanced as our technology is, they still have to program the number and then switch it to the your phone. If you are on a family plan you should not need to do this.
Here's my situation:
I have two lines on my account: one is my Hero which is not eligible for an upgrade until October. However, my other line is an Airave (courtesy of Sprint) that is eligible as of May first of this year.
Do you think I can use the Airave line's upgrade credit to get the EVO? Biggest thing I'm worried about is losing the free airave service ($5/month) and equipment I'm currently getting courtesy of Sprint.

I would recommend contacting them to ask. Worst they can say is no. Which in my opinion is probablly how it will go. I too have an airrave but I have not tried to upgrade it, so really im not 100% sure.
Best of luck to you, I prefer online chat so you can have a transcript of the conversation.

I may drop by my local Best Buy tomorrow. I already talked to Sprint and they said they could do the upgrade but the mail-in-rebate would fail if the new phone was swapped to another line. since Best Buy doens't do mail in rebates and I've heard tey've been able to finanngle this hey its worth the shot.

I completely agree, if you don't try we wont know for future reference. Let us know how it goes.
The story behind it: The Shack will activate it for you, BUT the reason they won't switch the line is that it messes up the automated system that passes on the carrier kick-back to the shack, therefore if you switch the line, the shack does NOT get paid for the $700 phone you just bought. Under the hood, the shack pays right near 'no contract' value for the phone, relying on the carrier kick-back which comes about 90 days after activation to compensate them for the inital sale at a loss. That's why they can do no mail-in rebates, they just absorb the cost initially.

That makes sense. Does that mean if you take it home and do the ESN swap they don't get a kick back ? That would make me feel bad....I would still do it ....any ideas on that ?
I'm not certain on that one, but I think that it might.. I suspect they just look up the ESN numbers from (90 days ago) each business day and match them with tickets sold. no match, no $$.

Yes it does. While it's convenient for you, it takes money out of our pockets
I went to the local shack today being in the same situation. My Pre is still under contract but my wifes diamond is not. The sales person said no problem, they would put my wifes phone on the new contract and activate the evo to my number. He didn't mention bringing my wifes phone, but after reading these post, I will take it just incase.

Clearing up preorder questions for RadioShack

I don't even know if I'm technically allowed to post this here...
Admins, I'm not specifically trying to sell anything, I just want to clear up some info on EVO preorders, at least from the RadioShack standpoint. If I need to word things differently, let me know, I'll be happy to change the post.
I'm the store manager of RadioShack. Currently, you can preorder the EVO from RadioShack for a $50 down payment. You pay $50 up front, we give you a gift card with the $50 on it you can use towards the price of the phone at time of purchase. If you decide not to go with the phone, the $50 gift card is non-refundable, but you can use it for anything in the store. The company is also throwing in a $20 credit for accessories that you can use at the time of purchase. The full un-subsidized retail price is $499, which you can preorder for as well. RadioShack requires that you be able to activate the phone, which means that you have to be eligible for an upgrade or eligible for a new line in order to preorder. It is not, however, a requirement to activate the phone in order to buy it.
We also have a trade-in program for any of your old phones, we can give you money back that you can use at the time on the price of the EVO. As a base for comparison, a HTC Hero in fair condition will net you about $90 back.
All the RadioShack stores inventory of EVO phones is based upon how many pre-orders we sell leading up to launch day, so if you preorder from us, you are guaranteed to be able to get your phone that specific day. We may be busy and you might have to wait until we can get to you, but we guarantee to have enough phones in stock to cover preorders. We are supposedly going to have several other EVO's shipped as well for those who did not preorder, but those will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis. Your best bet is to preorder, that's the only way we can guarantee you get a phone.
I have personally had the opportunity to use this phone as part of inter-company training, and let me tell you: every rumor you've ever heard about this phone being fast as all hell is absolutely true. This thing is a beast. I've already pre-ordered mine, and anyone in the area is welcome to stop in the store. We're not allowed to show anyone or demo the real deal before launch date, but we do have a dummy models that I would think that anyone would be happy to show, so you can see how the real phone feels prior to launch.
So that's all I got, I'll post any more info as I get it.
I went to my local RS a week ago and asked if I could pre-order an unsubsidized EVO. I watched the employee call his district manager and ask if this was possible. The answer was a flat out "NO".
I have seen varying reports from different members, both here and at Android Central, who have asked this question at their local RS stores. Some say yes and some say no.
My question is: Why is this a variable phenomenon?? It should be either allowed at all stores or not allowed. Not left to the whim (or ignorance of policy) of the managers.
Please understand, I am not attacking you and I greatly appreciate the info you have posted. It's just starting to drive me nuts!!
EDIT: I am going to stop by the store again on the way home from work and ask if the pre-order policy has changed. I will report back what I am told.
i pre-ordered mine from the manager at a radio shack. i'm not eligible for upgrade and i told him i was planning to pay full price. he checked out my phone number on his system and said i can totally pre-order it and pay full price. also i have the everything plus family 1600 plan, and he told me i would simply need to add the $10 4g data onto the line with the evo but i wouldn't need to change my plan.
Thank you for the information I already preordered my EVO at RS but I didn't know about the trade in part and the sales agent didn't tell me about it either. Might be something to bring up to training, I feel this is something I should of been told about when ordering the phone. My G1 is nearly flawless have had a Full body skin covering it from day one wonder how much I'll get. Oh I also have a Dash can i turn in both phones?
yes, there is no limit to how many phones you can turn in. We also take mp3 players, gps units, and other small electronics.
CLARIFICATION: you can not preorder the EVO at RS without being qualified with Sprint. This means you must either be eligible for an upgrade, or be eligible for a new line of service. As far as I am aware, you do not actually have to activate the phone in order to purchase it. For example:
Say you do not have or want sprint service, or you are up for an upgrade but do not wish to renew your contract. RS associates will run your credit for a new line of service, or check upgrade eligibility. We do a preorder, you pay the $50 down for a gift card. When the phone comes in on the 4th, you can choose to just buy it outright, the price is $499, and you can use that $50 gift card towards the price of it.
Hope that helps.
Sweet! thanks for the info.
Btw, what's the difference between pre-ordering through sprint and pre-ordering through radio shack? Any reason i should go with one or the other? I have a radio shack to my left and a sprint store to my right... at this very moment.
And are you guys taking in iPhones?
I believe at the sprint store you actually have to pay 299 and mail in the 100 dollar rebate where RS instantly reduces the phone to 199 and they give you a 20 credit towards accessories.

The Sprint stores here are not taking pre-orders, AT ALL. Some will open an hour early and some won't.
I stopped by the Radio Shack store and asked the one employee there if I could pre-order without an upgrade or a new line of service and he said he wasn't sure but could see no reason why I shouldn't be able to. I decided to do it but when he looked for a gift card he realized that they were out. He made a phone call to what sounded like his manager and was on the phone with him for quite a while. After he hung up he said that there were NO gift cards anywhere in the district (due to the EVO pre-orders) and that there was no indication that there would be any more before the 4th! He offered to take my name and number to let me know if any more came in. He also told me the same thing that the employee from my previous attempt: call the store on the morning of the 4th and they would set one aside for me.
So, there it is. On the 4th I will be in line at the Sprint store. If it looks like it's out of control (which seems VERY possible) I will be calling Radio Shack and hoping they have some left.
The sprint store's price is $299, and then you get a $100 mail in rebate. At radioshack, the price out the door is $199. Also, at RS you get a $20 credit towards accessories.
And if a store says they have no gift cards, well, my store is in Bellmead, TX, (the north side of waco) and I have plenty of them.

LOL, it's only 100 miles plus change!
My mom used to live in Waco but moved back down to Temple. If she was still up there I would go "visit" her on the 4th.
Any chance that I can slide some money under the table and pick up my Evo earlier? How much earlier do you guys get the pre-orders? Will it be a week before launch?
Maybe I'll come with a Box O Joe and some donuts on me..

You can pre-order one without being qualified IF you're buying it for full retail price.
I went to Radio Shack yesterday and surprise I was the very first one to pre-order phone at this particular radio shack.
The OP specifications were exactly correct. They gave me a $50.00 gift card. They ran a credit for me, I was eligible for five lines. I am a new Sprint customer.
Heck, I could've taken a phone for free, test it, and when the EVO arrives in two weeks, exchange it (of course buying EVO) since Sprint offers 30 day guarantee to test it.

I've seen the "loan phone" option reported in several Radio Shack posts now.
I just went to RS and I too paid $50 for pre order and got $50 giftcard but that RS employee did not run the credit check at all!
I am coming from ATT/iPhone. Not sure what's going on! Anyway, he asked me when I can come to pick it up and I said on 4th!
May be he will run the credit check on 4th?! But what if I am not eligible for any line with Sprint!?

So, I read on another forum that Best Buy is giving out free bluetooth headsets with each EVO purchse (pre-order). Any plans by Radio Shack to up the ante?

However, what kind of bluetooth are they giving is the question??

If I buy phone full price (unsubsidized) will they update my phone?

will they still update the phone even if you do not add the phone to an account. buying it outright.
I'm planning to buy a phone on second shipment. Will these be updated already before the box is even opened.
I'm asking for rooting purposes.
I've heard Sprint is not selling any "cold" phones, which is essentially the phone with no phone or contract attached to it, so unless you are getting it from somewhere else, or the rep was incorrect, what you are trying to buy does not exist as they have to send it with phone/contract information attached
R
To answer the first question I don't think it will come with the update on it yet. I have heard best buy has done the update when activating though so make sure they don't.

I don't think that is what he meant he was just stating that he is paying full price and not renewing his contract. Sprint is selling a lot of EVO's that way as many have come from the Hero, TP2, or Moment. If that is what you meant than the rep lied to you.
sorry, should have been more clear. I want to buy the phone without putting it on an account. I can't do this from the sprint store even if I pay full price?
my rep installed the ota update after i said not to do anything other then activate it, or sell it to me, in fear of not being able to root afterwards...
so, when he handed it to me and it was updated, i gave it back to him and told him, "i hope you enjoy your new evo, now lets try this again"
started over with new evo and they sold mine to the next guy
turns out you can still root after the ota update, but didnt know that untill after the fact
so for root purposes, it wont matter for now, but if theres another update...
who knows, personally i believe the devs here enjoy the challenge as every update that was put out for the phones so far, it seems 1 dev or another has taken it on and rooted it
just saw our reply... i wouldnt see why they wouldnt, just tell them you want to buy it and you'll set it up yourself, call up a store and ask.
edit... or, shoot i just may sell you mine at cost lol.... JK im keeping this 1
i bought mine outright at best buy.
expensive as hell but i must have epic phone for epic phone is epic.

if you bought the phone out of pocket with no upgrade, it shout be 450 out the door plus taxes, where did you buy this phone, they ripped you off!
bestbuy should pricematch sprint store. even after you bought. bring in an ad. google evo bestbuy pricematch for more info. they sometimes they give you some hassle but according to their policy they should do it. ( It's not a bundle offer, you are buying the phone alone at full retail.)

Sprint forced me to activate a new line to get the Epic 4G Touch

I walked into my local Sprint store with $600 cash in my pocket anticipating to walk out with a brand new SGS2E4GT at full MSRP without any additional commitment on my contract. (Have you guys noticed the full non contract price for this device is not listed.)
After the sales rep got the device from the stock room, we were ready to set it up with my existing account. After he logs into my account he notifies me that Im not eligable to an upgrade until January. So with a smile, I informed him that Im aware that Im not eligable yet & thats why Im willing to pay the full price for the phone. Then he said, Sorry sir, but effective today, every sprint device is ONLY available at a carrier subsidized price to people willing to activate a new line or those qualified for an upgrade. Which means nobody can purchase a phone at full price & swap it to their current number. (This **** didn't make any sense to me at all.)But any ways long story short, after a few minutes of blah blah blah, I walked out of the store with a brand new GS2, and a 3rd line to my account which I will not use but will be billed monthly $20 plus $10 premium data. Then he had the nerve to remind me that If I swap the new phone to my primary line before 30 days, I will lose my mail in rebate.....
What the hell is hapenning to Sprint????
That sucks. I had no problem getting mine.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA Premium App
Sounds like you went to an indirect retailer and not a Sprint-owned corporate store because that's not true at all.

You need to take it back and go to a Sprint corporate store

I walked into my local Sprint store with $600 cash in my pocket anticipating to walk out with a brand new SGS2E4GT at full MSRP without any additional commitment on my contract. (Have you guys noticed the full non contract price for this device is not listed.)
After the sales rep got the device from the stock room, we were ready to set it up with my existing account. After he logs into my account he notifies me that Im not eligable to an upgrade until January. So with a smile, I informed him that Im aware that Im not eligable yet & thats why Im willing to pay the full price for the phone. While I'm aware of their new "no device without a 2 year contract" policy I didn't think it was impossible to replace a phone without a new contract. Frankly it sounds like you got fncked. I would call Sprint and escalate this up to someone that gives a fnck because frankly this is a gigantic load of bull****.
...there is no way in hell that you can't even replace a device on an existing line/contract. If that is true, well, there is NO REASON AT ALL TO STAY WITH SPRINT. (VERY SLOW) UNLIMITED DATA IS NO REASON TO STAY WITH A COMPANY THAT WONT EVEN LET YOU REPLACE A PHONE WITHOUT A NEW CONTRACT.
Even given their new restrictive policies I highly doubt that what you were subject to was actual official Sprint policy--I don't give a **** what they say, they are likely idiots who interpreted the new policy wrong (either for their own benefit or merely out of their own extreme ignorance).
Escalate this as appropriate. This is bull****...and if you find that this is actual official policy please demand the section of the contract that specifies this and LET US KNOW. We will spread the word and take heed which will result in Sprint losing US and EVERYBODY WE HAVE ALWAYS RECOMMENDED GO TO SPRINT. EVERYBODY. Do you hear that Sprint?
...if (and when) you (most likely) find this to be complete bull**** on your Sprint reps part (and I would be sure to post the store number and location here and many other places, store manager name included) I would also demand a form of compensation for having been lied to and tricked into a contract. Nothing extravagant, but, something you find equivalent in value to your time and expense required to deal with this crap.
Yeah, I had no issues getting mine today either and technically my 22 month upgrade was not until april.
Thanks for the input guys, I really felt like I was suckered into signing an extra line which I dont need in order to get the device I really want, even though I was willing to pay full price for it. I will call corporate tomorrow and bring it to their attention. Thank You.
Good luck, hope you get it solved. Definitely sounds like bs to me.

Make sure you return the device by Sunday so you don't get charged an activation fee. Given the situation you described, you can probably get any charges reversed by care anyway... but to be on the safe side, return it within 3 days to avoid the fee for sure.
That's BS, u got the short end of the stick. So much to talk about here. First of all Sprint is known to make an exception that close out of a 2 year agreement and provide you with full subsidization. At the very least they will provide you with partial subsidization. The reason why they probably don't sell them at full price is because it probably doesn't ever happen because it makes zero sense even with the recent early termination hike to $350 dollars. If you want it right now, process the order overnight on the line in question with overnight delivery from a retailer like wirefly.com and return and close out the new line u purchased. I'm pretty sure they'll give you options to buy without a new line at wirefly. That would be really bad for business if they didn't. I think the return policy is 14 days now and you may suffer a restocking fee for it all. Good luck.
The phone is $499.99 retail on Sprint.com, so you definitely got suckered into a new activation and a nice commission/spiff for the sales person who got to you.
Wow, i remember those days as a cell phone salesguy and the stuff we used to pull, like these (and much worse).
This phone doesn't have a mail in rebate. And remember you can call customer care tell them that they are not allowing you to buy the phone. At least I didn't get a rebate.

I was just going to say this. If u go on sprint.com u can buy the phone without an upgrade for $499.99 so that just shows that place screwed u. Hope u get this straightened out cuz thats bull**** man.
Yeah use the 14 day satisfaction guarantee to tell that store a big **** you.
Just pay the ETF on your old line. Depending how long you had it the most it can be is $200 but since you said your upgrade was in January, it should be a lot less then that even be less then that. In the end you will save more money then buying the phone outright as long as you do not care about getting a new number.....
Then you go go thank the guy in the Sprint store for saving you a ****load of money!
And I thought there were no mail in rebates? Did you actually get a mail in rebate with the phone?
I bought mine for 499 without a problem.

What a fool. They feed you a spoon of bull **** and you ate it. All over a phone which in a few weeks could be brought on ebay for $350 and some change.
Yeah...I would call and cancel the line...pay the eft and call it even

Upgrading from DInc Before 2 Years Up Cost?

I have a Droid Incredible that I got probably a week or two after the release date (somewhere around May 2010). So my 2-year contract ends around the first or second week of May of 2012. My Dinc is pretty much dead, lots of problems with it now and I need to replace it before May. I was wondering if anyone in a similar circumstance (or anyone who knows) can give me an estimate on how much it will cost to upgrade to the GNex tomorrow? I also have a employer discount of 20% monthly and 25% on accessories (if that has any effect).
Also, in case it matters, my name isn't set as the owner of the Family Plan that I am on but I do have the main line that the Plan is attached two (the other two lines on the family plan are the added lines). Not sure if I need to get him to come with me (we live 2 hours apart) or if getting him on the phone/knowing his SSN would be enough to allow me to upgrade. I will be paying for it in cash so I don't need to charge it to the monthly phone bill.
Thanks,
Steven
I don't believe you can get an early upgrade until 20 months into your contract.. so you would have to wait until January to get it for $299.. Otherwise it will most likely be $649 off contract if you really can't wait..
That would really suck considering it is only like $150 for the ETA. They can't let me pay the $150+300 for the phone? I guess I can wait until mid January but my phone sometimes goes days where it reboots every 10-15 minutes plus even with the extended battery it can be 10% by like 1pm (used to last 2 full days easily). Some days it is virtually impossible to use and I just leave it at home. (sorry for ranting, lol)

Haha no worries, I was in this position before my Nexus with my original Droid
You can certainly try, it depends on who you talk to really.. if you talk to someone who is having a particularly good day that has enough authority (I'm assuming a store manager could do this) then you might be able to get it a month early, who knows.. worth a shot. Goodluck
I have a Droid Incredible and Verizon shows I am eligible to upgrade. I had already planned on upgrading to the Nexus but I accidentally killed my phone over a month ago which made me even more anxious.
I don't think I upgraded to the Incredible right away (at release) but I might have. Still only a two week difference and I was eligible to upgrade (with a renewed contract) back in November for sure.

I got my OG Droid a week before the dInc came out, and I was eligible on 12/3... so those of you who bought a dinc day of, or really early on, may be eligible right now or very very soon.
That being said I spoke to a guy who got me my Rezound a day early (I returned it because it was bad, 2 of em) because I was going out of state and I just went about it not expecting them to help me but asking kindly for some help because my OG Droid's headphone jack is all but shot and I use it to listen to music in my car.
Dont know if it will work, but only a manager can force the system to let you get an upgrade early. Worth a shot, just dont get your hopes up. Good luck.
Edit: I just read about the not being the primary / authorized person on the account to make changes, you may run into a lot of road blocks. You may have to have the account owner call up Verizon and see if there is anything they can do to get you authorized to make changes. Even though you aren't charging the phone to the account. If you are paying the subsidized price for the device you are infact signing a contract that binds that line up for a set amount of time. (2 years most likely)
don't let the responses discourage you. I signec a 2 year this past march & got the thunderbolt. in october, the thunderbolt started having some "big" issues & I wasn't paying for insurance so decided to call 611 for the hell of it and see if they'd do anything for me.
they ended up offering me an early upgrade!
which I eventually used for the rezound and exchanging tomorrow.
definitely call them & see what they can do. I wouldn't bother going to a store as they'd just tell you to call anyway.
Early Upgrade
If you signed a "New Every 2" plan before Jan 2011, you should be able to upgrade your phone after 12months. VZ will tell you that's there's a $20 charge for upgrading early. This is an optional charge. I upgraded from my OG Droid (bought 11/09) 13months later to the Droid X on 12/1/10. Charged the extra $20 bucks. I signed a new 2 year contract (ne2). I just upgraded to the Droid RAZR on 12/3/11. When I upgraded to the RAZR, they waived the $20 charge.
After Jan/2011 VZW did away with the NE2 plans and now enforce the 20month upgrade discount policy. Now I'm not sure how this affects you when you are not the primary on the account. But I would at least look into it. Also if you go through multiple phones, talking to Customer Relations not service might help you get an early upgrade for repeat problem phones.
I tried Amazon Wireless and it said I wasn't eligible, so then I tried LetsTalk. They said I am not eligable until 1/4/12 so that is only 20 days from now. I am going to call Verizon this evening or tomorrow and see if I can get them to bump it up less than a month so I can purchase it earlier, otherwise I guess I can wait until January 4th.
It also said I can order it now and they will hold it for me until the fourth. LetsTalk's price is $174.99 for me to upgrade so I may order it now to lock in that sale price, though it would suck if they or somewhere else got a better deal by then. Hmm, decisions..
I emailed Verizon last week and they just called me back and left a voicemail saying they will let me get my upgrade early! I have to call the specific person back and I hope she will enable my upgrade not just force me to buy it through her (Verizon) instead of being able to get it though Amazon or LetsTalk since I would be saving $125. I will let you guys know in case anyone else is interested in upgrading early.
I was able to upgrade early despite being in contract only 8 months in with my Thunderbolt. I had to agree to buy some accessories which came out to be about $400 total but it sure beat the price of paying $650 + tax for another 8 months extension.
It all depends on who you talk to I guess.
I had the dinc and got it about 3 weeks after release. I got my nexus on Thursday and just had to pay the $20 early upgrade fee. Was about $360 when it was all said and done. Go to your store and just ask. Doesn't hurt.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
I had to buy it through Verizon but she discounted it so it wasn't the full $300. I should have it in two days and I already purchased a screen protector and also the extended battery for $25. A nice Christmas present to myself.
I too came from having a Dinc. I got my Dinc in July 2010. When I was on VZW website it said I was able to upgrade back when the T-Bolt came out. I just waited till the GN came out and ordered it and only had to pay the $299 + tax. Nothing else. Was disappointed no discount like the old days w/ new every 2 years but oh well. I was even able to bill to my account w/ free shipping and just got it and life is good.
