am i missing something here? every screenshot i've ever seen of 6.1 was smartphone.. and pdaviet's announced release still looks exactly like 6, except for what's displayed in the device info screen (unlike the smartphone 6.1 which is pretty different from wm6)

Same thing here
All the pictures of WM 6.1 are from Windows mobile standard edition (Smartphone).
ref: http://www.boygeniusreport.com/gallery/handsets/windows-mobile-61/
Only few future devices are rumoured to have 6.1 profesional (Touch screen). But no pictures for that any where.
ppc device with WM6.1
PPC rumored to have WM6.1 Professional
Samsung SGH-i900
T-Mobile MDA Ameo 16GB (HTC Athena)
Palm Drucker Windows Mobile 6.1 PDA Phone (Touchscreen)
If someone can get hold of it and get a dump would be nice for the xda-dev community.
so what about windows mobile 6.5
STILL WAITING ?
if you need nonstable wm6, then you should buy htc blue angel for now

well ... not sure about this stage.. ms is stating, that wm6.5 will finally go public in feb..
there's no proof that wm6.5 will run on our trinitys.. it was already hard work to get wm6.1 run on it and i guess if stuff like drivers and more are different from our device, wm6.5 probably wont ever run on trinity ... without promising, but there are already ppl trying to get 6.5 to run on their devices, so i guess if we have a hermes or kaiser with 6.5 there wont be a that hard way to get i run on trinity.
but if you compare xp to vista, i guess 6.5 will need more ram than 6.1 - so that might be another issue to adress to..
i don't know if any cook has already started experimenting on wm6.5 .. i guess its not a good idea to start at this stage or wait for the final..

It's like going back to windows 95 in your computer....
Uni came in with wm5 so you can not go before that, and there is no wm2003 roms for uni so NO...

Yea, Why do you want to downgrade from wm5/6/6.1/6.5/6.5.1?
Cause everyone says, that Win 2003 was the best of Windows Mobile ever. So I want to try it
Haha, everyone who?
Yes, it was the best Windows Mobile ever....6 years ago.
yeah, but look
WM 5 was the slowest
WM 6 was qiute good, 6.1 too
WM 6.5 well......
And now I want try WM 2003 on my Uniwersal, cause for exemple 2003 for BlueAngel, as everyone says, is the best
Or maybe there is a Win CE for uniwersal?
i don't mean to bump this, however this needs to be said.
i wish there was a wm2003 for the universal. or at least a clean working vga wm5.
I got a universal a few days ago, i slapped wm6 realvga on it. res was great, loved it. speed? i couldnt even answer a phone call. Thats how slow WM6+ is. changing screen orientation caused me to miss phone calls. I've since downgraded to swat4's wm5, which lacks vga but overall is much much faster lmfao.
so.
wm2003(entire OS in ram, how can it not be faster?)>wm5>wm6.0>wm6.1>wm6.5.
if only i could figure out how to use ramfilesystem for wm5. that'd be fantastic.
Dpends which WM6 you use. Most of us have found a version we love and runs extremely fast, and would only revert to WM5 if we needed Video Call.
On that subject, I see fring is doing video call. It would be good if that comes over to WM devices
Just until recently I had HP hw6515 the beetle with 64 mb ram, PXA270 312 MHz and WM2003SE. And it was not better at all. The delay and lag was awful when you were about to receive call while doing something else, surfing for example. The only advantage was the old memory allocation where you could just slide the bar and decide what amount will be available for programs and what for storage.
I wouldnt trade id for WM6 or even 5.

WM5 was slower than WM2003 for other reasons than just the OS. This was when the WM platform switched from NOR to NAND flash chips. NOR is faster and allows programs to be executed directly without copying to RAM first. NAND flash operates more like disk and programs have to be copied to RAM before execution. This slows down the OS. NAND has other advantages though (cost, life expectancy).

hmm interesting
wm 2003 in this uni
Oh i'm also interested in the wm2003 - from the pictures, there should be an official wm2003 rom for the UNI but not available to the public...the article also mentionned 128 MB of RAM...Rom it should have said I guess.
I miss my old PDA2's system. it would be great to have it back on this Uni.
check out this fancy chart

They also said that 6.5 doesn't support capacitive screens (what kind of screen does the HD2 ship with and what OS does it ship with?)
They have no clue. You should be careful what you believe.

As I've said numerous times, WM doesn't care what technology the screen is using, it just requires some data about a mouse event on the screen somewhere. Multitouch is what WM6.5.X can't natively handle, and that's what HTC have hacked in.
Okay, I think the information that WP7 is based on a WinCE 6.0 kernel might be correct.
I don't see an alternative. But in many ways this is good for us. Yes, they have changed some things for sure. But tell me, in which areas has the old kernel proven to be bad/old/not usable? It will be more like an upgrade like from Win XP Kernel to Vista and I think, with some kind of compatibility mode and drawbacks in terms of visual style, many old applications should be working.

The difference between WinCE 5 and 6 is more like the difference between Windows 95 and XP. All applications digging too deep into the system (like all this hooking/interprocess stuff) will not be possible anymore and needs to be adapted to CE 6. All the application (GUI) level stuff didn't change from CE 5 to CE 6. If WP7 is based on CE 6 and WM 6.7 (if it really happens?) is also based on CE 6 this would be AWESOME. Same kernel base, so it's probably gonna be easier to port things between them. I also still don't believe that all WM 5/6/6.5 apps aren't completely working anymore on WP7. Some of them probably need some "fine tuning" to adapt to the new OS but that's also been the case when they switched from PPC 2003 to WM 5.
Hello everyone!
I have here a quite old (well, perhaps not so "old") PDA, an Acer n50, and I'd like to improve it.
I have seen recently that great people have been able to port Android onto Windows Mobile designed PDAs and smartphones. I even have seen a youtube video guy able to start (just start) Linux on a n50 back in 2007.
So finally my question is : do you think it is possible to install/run a reasonably recent version of Android on this Acer n50? If not or if difficult, can it be possible to install/run a more recent version of Windows Mobile on it? (but honestly, I have a much greater estime towards Android ). I would also like to have some help to achieve this. I have already searched the net for this and Android's developer pages, but I have not found this kind of information or I simply got lost.
I am not a hacker. In fact, I don"t have any experience in this at all. I just know how to fiddle in the console to launch some stuff and have the least of the basics.
Here are the Acer n50's specifications :
Constructor : Acer
Screen : Backlit Color
Touch screen : Yes
Resolution : TFT LCD Screen, 65 536 colors, 240 x 300 pixels
Microprocessor / Frequency : Intel PXA272 at 312 MHz

Wireless connection : IrDA, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi 802.11b
Audio/vidéo functionnalities : Audio system with integrated speaker and microphone, headset plug
Integrated basic applications : Microsoft Pocket Outlook, Pocket Word, Pocket Excel, MSN Messenger, Windows Media Player 9, Internet Explorer, Calculator, File Explorer, Microsoft ActiveSync 3.7.1, Pictures, Games
Extension port : Accepts SD cards, MMC, CompactFlash
Power : Lithium-ion polymer rechargeable battery
Dimensions (l x p x h) in mm : 120 x 70 x 17,4 mm
Weight in grams : 150 g
Thank you by advance for your help and far by advance.... your patience.
64mb ram is too little for windows mobile 6.5 but someone just did the impossible so you might ask them to cook one for you providing they have the hardware.

Acer n50 never got WM5 upgrade, so there is NO chance for any upgrade from WM2003SE.
To cook a WM6.5 ROM for a device at least WM5 ROM is required as they share almost the same kernel.
There are several posts on the net in french and english about this WM5 upgrade from Acer for n50. But the download link to it seems blocked now by login restrictions or dead links.
Up to now, the up-to-date repository for Acer n50 is this : ftp.support.acer-euro.com/handheld/n50/ there is no rom in there so right now there is no upgrade in fact.
So, as the upgrade for n50 was just vapor or has disappeared mysteriously, is there a way I could install WM5 (through a rom or whatever way that can be possible) over WM2003SE? I have read some people would try this without being sure if it is possible.
By the way, do you think it can also be possible to have the system in french in 5 or 6.5 in someway?
Thank you for your help.
I think that Acer n50 WM5 ROM never existed or maybe Acer made it, but never released it.
As there is no WM5 ROM for n50, there's nothing you can do.
ROMs are device specific, so that means you can't use any other device ROM.
System in french would only be possible if there would be a WM5 ROM.
All right so all possibilities are getting restrained then.
So, two last questions :
Could there be a way for me to install Windows Mobile 5 on this Acer (I guess not otherwise you would already have told me)? It looks weird that people are able to cook WM6.x and not WM5...
Can it be possible to install a version of Android on this PDA?
Too bad it cannot be possible to try to improve this device like it could be for some little bit old computers...

People are able to cook WM6.x because they have a WM5 to use as base. That means if device does not have a WM5, there is no chance for a cooked WM6.x ROM.
You must find a WM5 ROM for n50, that's your only chance.

Basically it's possible, but someone must make it. But I don't think that it will ever happen.
All right then, thank you for your answers.
