Hi guys,
I have noticed a strange thing with Exchange mail app. When I send my e-mail it does send it but, however, saves the message as a draft as well. After some time my DRAFTS folder is becoming a copy of my SENT ITEMS which is a bit annoying. Does anyone experience the same / has any cure for that?
Second "bug" is when I try to reply a facebook notification. Now, when I post a photo on FB and someone leaves a comment ot that, I receive an E-Mail notification like "John has commented on your photo...", and in the message body it says: REPLY TO THIS E-MAIL TO ANSWER THE COMMENT. It has always worked for me using Outlook, webmail, WinMobile-outlook-mail (and it still does) to hit the "Reply" button, type smth thus leaving a comment. However, no comments are left if I try to "reply" on "John's comment" using my Desire.
Any clues?
Using HTC default Exchange mail app.
anyone?...
I guess the two problems may be related. Are the Facebook replies going out through your Exchange account?
To diagnose the first problem, can you see if the Exchange server is logging any errors? Get your system administrator (if it's not you) to check the application event logs, while you're doing a send/receive.
I have the first problem - intermittently any mail I send is also saved to the drafts folder and its a little annoying. Personally I don't believe the second problem is related in any way at all...

I have the first issue when using my office email account. We use Lotus Notes and the interface between the device and the Domino server is Commontime software, using Activesync client on the device.
Commontime advise that this is only an issue with Android 2.1 devices as the outgoing mail is not stamped with a Posteddate field.
I also have a Hotmail account on the Desire, and I do not get the "sent -> drafts" syndrome with that account.
Deleting and re-adding accounts is fixing problems for some people. I would suggest delete, reboot, re-add.
Already tried that but didn't work.

--or, in the case of Lotus, the logs from Commontime.
Sometimes answers or new mails ends up staying in draft.
I've found out that on some e-mail addresses it takes the domain away.
[email protected] becomes [email protected]
On both answers and new ones. And it can be one out of two...
Any ideas?

Hi all,
Just upgrading to new Imate ROM. Now it seems that Universal has push email can anyone recommend an Exchange SP2 direct push email provider for consumer market? Many thanks for taking the time to read.
Tom C (UK)
The onlyone I know for the moment is 4smartphone.net - if you find any better (means cheaper), let me know!
Some report are saying 4smartphone.net takes 30 seconds to push an email to your device, rather than 5 seconds or less that others are getting via their own exchange servers.
Its worth asking these website exchange account providers what frequency they run the push 'heartbeat' at - you might end up with a big bill if they haven't set the Exchange/firewall to a reasonable rate.
Device SMS Address
I've just signed up for the 4smartphone trial, but Orange are completely unable to tell me what the Device SMS Address should be. They don't have a clue what this is about. I was guessing [email protected], but that doesn't work.
Does anyone know what it should be?

If you're using the aku2 rom then you don't need an sms address. The MSFP/Direct Push works via http not sms. Waaaaaay better!
Settings
I think it is that version. I'm using the new ROM version 1.30.68 with Radio version 1.09.00. I can see the push mail icon in Comm Manager, but it's greyed out, so I'm not sure where to go from here. The 4smartphone support pages are not exactly informative.
Can anyone point me to a website about setting this up? My searches are not getting me far.
Thanks.

Got it working
Just need to ignore the instructions on the 4smartphone web page about SMS Device.
From the moment of clicking send on my Desktop to the email arriving in my device inbox the time taken is about 25 secs, which includes gmail forwarding it to the 4smartphone address.
4smartPhone Help!!
Glad to hear that you got the SMS problem sorted which help me out too. I can now sync with contacts but what do I do for the email. Do I have to set an account up on WM5 which I have done but there is no push coming through I have to manually send and receive. Any help much welcome. Thanks
You need to set it up using active sync in WM5. You will need to add a server (secure.4smartphone.net) then your username, password and domain (4smartphone). It will then sync using the GPRS connection.
I've got Outlook desktop, Outlook Web Access (with smartphone) and Outlook on WM5 all synchronizing nicely. My only problem is that I have three pop email account on Outlook desktop, but 4smartphone only seems to work with one.
And just to add the obvious, you need to have email being forward to the address that you got @smartphone.com

4Smartphone.net are US based, where email to SMS is very common. It took the Americans about three years to wake up to the fact that everyone else in the world has to pay for SMS messages to be sent - hence the new push technology from Microsoft.
What they are referring to is a feature known as AUTD (always up to date) which is how Exchange used to do push. A specially created SMS text message would be sent to your phone which told your device that something had changed, and it would then do a sync.
I am told that it worked very well - it is just unfortunate that for everyone outside of the USA the feature would cost many thousands to run for each single user.
Simon.
4smartPhone Help!!
Thanks for your quick reply. I have forwarding set up and all the correct settings for Active Syn in WM5, UserName, Password, Domain and Save password. Under the Options in ActiveSync there now appears and Exchange Server with the following selected Contacts, Calendar, E-Mail, Tasks.
I'm still not sure though what to do with the email all the above are syncing via 3g. In the Messages section do I have to create a new account and if so what are the correct setting for this?
Thanks again for the help and suggestions.
Tom C.
When it syncs with the Exchange server it automatically goes into the Outlook email inbox on your device. If you've previously been synchronizing with the desktop it wipes out those emails, which is why I'm trying the Pro version of 4smartphone and synchronising all three.
Have you checked if test emails you are sending are reaching the 4smartphone email address? You can do that by logging into the web version of Outlook via the link on their website.
Also the push email icon in Com Manager should now be working and it will say Microsoft DirectPush at the top.
That may not be much help, but I am also completely new to this.

Once again thanks for the help. Just about got it sorted as I read your reply. The missing link for me is that the you don't have to sent up a seperate email account I was looking for server addresses extra but all those go under ActiveSync. Getting mails fine now but not too sure yet about sending them. Are yours sending fine or is there a delay?
Thanks again, you are still once step ahead of me
I've got Push email working with mail2web.com and have a few questions:
I've gota couple of email addresses that won't forward to my mail2web email account and I don't really want to use mail2web's harvester as that only checks once every hour, so I was wondering whether it's possible to set Outlook on my PC to synce with my mail2web account so that my PC will download emails from my POP accounts, then upload them to my mail2web server, which then pushes the emails to my phone?
Or is there a simpler way to do it?
Also, when I reply to an email that's been pushed the reply address is always my mail2web email address, which is a pain as it confuses people and gets rejected by my email groups. How can I change the default address that my replies go from, or even just change them on each email as I reply?
I'm sure I'll have more questions soon.! Cheers.

HI
i m using tmobie mda (usa) with the data plan and with the i can configure my pop3 email account on my phone and make to get the emails automaticaly after certain time
so then why do we need exchange server for
i mean i can be wrong too but if i m wrong can someone tell me the right thing
Thanks
I recommend Mail2Web, the simple setting and most important it is FREE.
Had the Desire for about a week and like it a lot but will have to return it because Exchange sync doesn't work and that's a key feature for me.
1. Set up account and set 1 home screen to the mail widget and for a couple of days it worked perfectly until I saw new emails on the home screen widget that didn't appear in the mail app itself! How can the widget apparently be more up to date than the source of the data - the mail app?
2. After this could no longer sync e-mail - it appears that contacts and calendar sync but e-mail shows "sync protocol error"
3. Removed account and set it up again and it worked perfectly for about 24 hours and then exactly the same thing happened. Removed account, removed battery, reset account and its working again....for about a day before I get the same result (home screen widget showing e-mails that aren't showing on the mail app itself and I get sync error).
4. Removed all apps and reset to factory settings and set up account again but the same thing has happened again after about a day. It seems that if it tries to sync and can't connect because there's no signal eg I'm on underground then it locks and can no longer sync
It's Microsoft Exchange server 2003 SP2 and colleagues have no problem with i phones or blackberries and I've been using WM phones for years without any problems. Unfortunately phone is useless to me if this doesn't work and disappointed that HTC claiming feature that in my case clearly doesnt work
More information on above
Forgot to say that although I wasn't getting any e-mail update I was able to send e-mails all the time that this was going on! So I could send but not receive.

After posting the above, I had this happen again this evening. If occurred when the connection changed from "H" to "G" I'm missing 55 mails
I'll have to try and figure out what's happening
I've had exchange working great for the last 3 weeks. Then it decided to stop working. I've deleted the account and re created it and no joy. Just won't sync. I'm gonna try with moxier now and see if that works.

Identical problem here with my Desire.
It is not just a simple receive problem because I can delete emails from the main "Inbox" folder, than switch to the "Deleted Items" folder, sync and retreive the emails I've just deleted.
But syncing the main "Inbox" folder is not working anymore.
Seems like internal index data for that folder is broken.
This is not a server problem because just deleting the sync account and re-creating it magically fixes it until something screws up again.
This is clearly a case of bad application coding. Damn try-catch statements
Had the same problem myself on 2 different phones, I found that going into account settings and doing a save without changing anything (it says it is checking your password) fixes it.
Seems to happen if you make a lot of changes via outlook and the phone looses its place.

Tried, but does not work for me.
I wonder if the application event logs on the Exchange server will give more information on the failure? Is SSL set up correctly? Some people have been having problems with self-issued certificates.

Funny you mention about it breaking when going from "H" to "G". I thought I had seen bandwidth related success with my exchange syncing. On WIFI, I could sync the whole inbox, but I would get failures when trying on 3G. I then reduced the inbox to "last 7 days only" and it worked. Going back to higher bandwidth, suddenly I could have the whole inbox without sync errors.
Deleting & recreating Exchange sync account works
For me, deleting and recreating the Exchange sync account workedto get rid of "Sync protocol error". Not funny, but at least there's a way out.
So far so good...
Suspecting some local index file is broken if the sync task is suddenly aborted, I have avoided killing any task and guess what ? So far so good...
Will keep you informed.
P.S. Even if this is the real issue, the sync code is BROKEN.
Hi,
Has anybody gotten to the bottom of this? I've found several threads about the same error across several HTC phones on several different forums.
Deleting and re-adding the account seems like a last resort?
All my contacts are synched via Exchange so if i delete it i assume i lose all of them? And then would i lose corresponding text messages? Anything else? Do all my links to Facebook, Flickr etc get lost? I can see some weird strings of code in my contacts on Outlook now so is the Desire clever enough to pick these up and link everything back together again?
If i can get everything back by just re-adding the account then I'll give it a go but it really does seem far from ideal.
Hi all,
Sorry to bump but i've still not taken the step of deleting my exchange account through fear of losing information.
Obviously it will delete my contacts but will it also delete corresponding SMSs, links to facebook, twitter etc (in Outlook I can see some funny code strings in each contact which i think may be the links)?
Basically, will anything be permanently lost or will i simply need to re-add the account to get everything back as it was?
Is there a way to back up my contacts first? HTC Sync?
Thanks
When I removed an Exchange account from the stock mail app it didn't remove the linking data (which appears in the notes field of your contacts). And there would be no reason for it to delete SMSes, although with the contacts gone, it may not be able to link the phone numbers to names.
HTC Sync could sync your contacts to a separate Outlook installation, or you could use one of the many backup apps (search around here for reviews).
I've only had my Desire for 24 hours but I elected to go with Touchdown right from the get-go after advice from a colleague. So far, it's working a treat (fingers crossed it stays that way). Is anyone here using TD and experiencing these issues, or is it just with the native mail app?
I have a simular issue where Exchange mail stops receiving and sending emails. I only pick up that there is an issue, when attempting to send a email.
This happens regularly, and I have reported this issue to HTC.
My fix when this occurs is to untick and retick SSL option and save.
Well i've removed and re-added the exchange account and so far everything seems to be working ok. Will keep you folks posted - hopefully it doesn't happen again!
Chaps,
Just joined, but I think I have your answer... Task Killer. If you run any of the task killer apps, they can kill the exchange as it is happening, leaving the inbox status in a corrupt state, and the only way to fix this is to delete the account and start over. But then, if the task killer kills the sync, you will have to do it oveer, and over again. Task Killers are great for killing the main apps, but use them on the desire in manual mode only, and only kill the main apps, not the background processes.
Regards
Jaffa
I don't believe it is caused by task killers - I use Advanced Task Killer but it doesn't even list email as open even though it is. I noticed my inbox started having issues after changing sync from 7 days to 14 - it kept re-downloading the last few messages, then after 1 day simply stopped updating the inbox. All other folders fine. I suspect it's a space/size issue - some reports from POP users sound similar. HTC / Android really need to address this. Slowly getting sick of my HTC Legend...(Legendary failure!)
Hi
I`ve a big problem with HTC-Mail.
I have HTC-Mail configured as follows:
- POP3
- T-Mobile.de settings
- "Delete Mail on Server" = no
HTC-mail delete emails on the server. The option "Delete Mails on Server" is not select. If I will empty the trash then the emails deleted on the server!
The same effect when the option is select. The same effect when the option is selected.
I`ve the problem with Stock- and Custom-ROM (Modaco, Pay`s)
Does anyone have the same problem?
Can anyone help me?
Sorry for my bad english!
Johnny
The problem must be just with pop. IMAP does not seem to suffer from this issue.
I've got pop setup and that doesn't delete mail.
Is there no solution to the problem of pop3?
I need pop not imap

The solution is probably to choose another mail client. I've often heard K9 mail recommended, but since I use Gmail I've not bothered to take a look.
I suspect that the issue you are having with your device is that the "Delete Mails on Server" option is really referring to what the app should do after it has downloaded new emails - not to what you subsequently do with the email.
Regards,
Dave
Afaik, pop has a option to keep mails on server. Imap will keep them there anyways. You should have no probs with that option set.
Edit. Will check when i get home. I could ofc be wrong
Ok:
My settings:
Gmail: pop3/imap forwarding:
Pop download: Keep Gmail's copy in inbox
On the desire the same as yours. It hasn't deleted a single mail since i got my desire.
I think if it's a problem it's a problem with gmail, since i doubt the phone can tell the server what to do.

I have the same problem with HTC's e-mail application.
I am using pop3 and havn't checked the option to delete mail on server but it still does it. Really annoying.
It's almost certainly a problem with the HTC mail app. I have the same issue with a POP account that I have; doesn't seem to make a difference whether the '..mail on server' is on or off.
It also re-downloads emails continously unless they have been deleted from another source (web client or Outlook).
K9 seems to ok but stills needing polishing up. It does have many options that that built in one doesnt' marking emails being one.
Me having this problem with POP too. So I switched to IMAP
I do not have these problems, but if t-mobile does not support IMAP (which is imho better than POP3), try K-9 Mail:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.fsck.k9&hl=en
Just saw this thread - on my Incredible with stock Froyo the HTC email application uses POP3 with my email server and has an option in Settings for "Delete emails on server" unchecked most times.
I say most times because it will, at seemingly random times, re-check that option and delete mail directly from the server that I've just viewed and deleted through the phone UI. This option has seemingly self-flipped a few times since I've had Froyo and seems to be a bug.

I've done my due diligence (searching for HOURS on end), so I know this has been discussed many times but I still have not seen any sort of solution or progress on how to fix the issue.
Here is the issue: Gmail/Google accounts in WP7, when you press the Trash-can icon to delete your email(s), it does not actually move the email to the 'Trash' folder (or how Gmail understands it, the 'Trash' label). It simply removes the 'Inbox' label but still keeps the message under 'All Mail'.
I've tried everything - set up my email account as an ActiveSync account and tried deleting, going to my Gmail (or any other of my email accounts that resides on Google Apps) account settings via the web browser and try fiddling with the Advanced IMAP options, but nothing.
Does anyone have any solution for this? Unfortunately, this is pretty much a dealbreaker for me with WP7 - I just purchased the HTC Trophy. I want to really love the OS/device (and I do love the OS) but being able to properly delete my Google/Gmail emails is crucial.
I've heard some people, as a temporary stop-gap, to just use the "Move to Folder" and move the email message to [Gmail]\Trash, but I don't see that folder in WP7. Any ideas on this?
Any help or insight in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
There is no solution (as in setting you can change in WP7 or on google.com) that changes this behavior. The only real option is to occasionally log in to your email account on the website and purge old mail from all mail. That's what I do about once every couple of months.
Thanks for the response. That's a real bummer. Do you or anyone know if this is something Microsoft plans on fixing? Basically it just entails making the Delete/Trash Can -> Remove Inbox Label + Add Trash Label to the message.
Also, do you know how I could view the [Gmail]\Trash folder/label? When I try to browse All Folders, it doesn't show up. Any ideas?
Thanks.

You should be able to change imap settings in gmail. There's a few articles I found, but they're a bit old, and I'm apparently too new of a member to link. I've gone ahead to write a few instructions.
1. Go to settings in your gmail
2. Go to the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" tab
3. In IMAP access, under "When I mark a message in IMAP as deleted:" select "Auto-expunge off"
4. In IMAP access, under "When a message is marked as deleted and expunged from the last visible IMAP folder:" select "Move the message to the Trash" or "Immediately delete the message forever"
I'm still trying to figure out how exactly the behavior works on my own device. From my understanding, by doing this, you'll send deleted message to the trash rather than archive. It appears that you lose the "instant" server update (so you might have emails that you delete on your phone stay in your inbox as unread for a while).
**edit for further research - It appears that your message will only be deleted if there are no other labels for it. Apparently [gmail]all mail counts as a label. So what the heck did I tell you to do?
Thanks for the reply. I don't understand what your last part meant..the part about your edit for further research. Please clarify. Thanks.

This, and it's the same for IOS, not a WP7 issue.
I read numerous guides looking for a solution but there isn't one. If an email exists in another view, i.e. "All Mail" then it won't be deleted.
After using IOS and WP7 this was one of the main reasons for moving to Android. It may seem a bit extreme but I hate having email I don't need. Everything gets read and deleted.
What you say is true in a technical sense, but it misses the underlying issue. Gmail has one label, Gmail/Trash, that is special. Any email that is sent there automatically has all other labels removed. However, it is up to an email client to apply the label. For example, the Thunderbird email client on Windows does just that. If I read an email in my Inbox, and then click the Delete button, Thunderbird sends and IMAP notification to Gmail to apply the Gmail/Trash label to the message, and it is instantly gone from both my Inbox and All Mail. And the Gmail/Trash label is automatically purged after 30 days.
The problem with WP7 and iOS is that they don't (and possibly can't) send the same notification. All they currently do is notify Gmail to remove the Inbox label. And, as has already been noted, the fact that the email is still in All Mail causes it to be retained on the server.
Thanks for the info, guys. I realize and understand that the culprit is the WP7 mail client, not Gmail.
As a temporary workaround (I am seriously hoping they fix this.. you guys should visit http://windowsphone.uservoice.com/f...eting-email-in-gmail-really-delete-?ref=title to vote for adding this feature), I created a new label called "WP7 Trash". From now on, when I want to "delete" mail, I simply move to to that folder/label in the WP7 mail client, and then anytime down the road I can log into my accounts and just delete all the mail in that folder/label.
Kind of kludgy, but it's the only thing I can think of...
Let me know your thoughts.
After futzing around a bit more on the internet, i've found that some people are able to get the desired "trash button = delete" action if you add your gmail account as an Exchange account instead of as a "Google Account". I haven't tried it yet, but since it isn't dealing with Gmail's odd IMAP implementation, perhaps you will get better results.
Setting up your Gmail account as an Exchange/ActiveSync account doesn't work - I've tested it several times and nothing. I do have my accounts set up as Exchange/ActiveSync because I've heard that it uses less battery than using the "Add Google Email Account" option in WP7.
The only temp-solution I've found is the create a WP7-Trash label and move messages to that folder (for later deletion once you log into the Gmail web interface).
If anyone CAN get the Delete = Trash working on ActiveSync/Exchange setups, by all means let us know!
Guys
I am using an Android phone. I have the stock email program and I have also K9 and Enhanced Email all running at the same time.
I have an Gmail account but don't use it for email or for nothing really dont trust the cloud/google.
My problem is all the email apps work great BUT when I open outlook then they all get removed form my phone. So basically the only emails I am left with are the send ones(in my phone). This happens with my POP and exchange accounts.
My question:
1) is there a Mail App that will make a copy of the email in my phone so when I open outlook they wont get sync and disappear?
2) If number 1 is no then is there a easy way to full your phone to keep the emails.
Thank you

A properly configured Exchange server usually doesn't allow the local device to retain the message data, it's all accessed real-time from the server. Its possible you have what I call a Half-Ass Exchange, which means you have a central address directory, but the IT department set up Outlook and Exchange to store messages locally on the PC rather than on the server. This would lead to what you are experiencing... Outlook takes all the messages off the server, leaving your phone with nothing to see when it connects. There's not a whole lot you can do about that unless your IT guys will move your email data to the Exchange server. Or maybe they have an IMAP access option. (See below)
With pop3 accounts... You have a similar problem, except there is no way to for two different devices to access the same data. The closest you can get would be to configure both devices to leave messages on the server after downloading them. Any emailed replies then can only be accessed from the device from which you sent them.
If you have the option, switch your pop3 accounts to IMAP. All user data is kept on a server (just like GMail), and any device that is connected to that account automatically syncs with the server, including access to deleted messages and sent messages sent from any other device.
All that being said... The stock email program kinda sucks. I would stick with the 3rd party apps like K9.
This is a new issue to me. I came from a PRE WEBOS and i did not have that problem. I believe the problem is in the way ANDROID OS handles emails. Basically all its changed is the device all else remained constant. I believe but not sure that if i was run all my mail thru gmail this will not be an issue. Its that true?
Thanks

This is a new issue to me. I came from a PRE WEBOS and i did not have that problem. I believe the problem is in the way ANDROID OS handles emails. Basically all its changed is the device all else remained constant. I believe but not sure that if i was run all my mail thru gmail this will not be an issue. Its that true?
Thanks

I access my pop3 mail just fine using K9 (again, I don't like the stock email program). Downloaded messages remain on my phone after they've been downloaded by my Thunderbird installation on my PC.
My current company doesn't have an Exchange server, so I can't speak to that with direct knowledge... My lat experience with Exchange was about two years ago, so its behavior could certainly have changed! My current company has 10 locations, and they are content to use a 3rd party pop3 solution for email. As an IT man, that annoys me, but then, I don't write the checks!
If you haven't changed any settings in your Outlook, then I would look closer to your settings in the email programs. K9 specifically has a setting that you need to check in order to download the messages to your phone (as opposed to just reading them off the server). I don't remember if it came checked by default...
Check to see if your phone email programs are set to actually download entire messages from the server, or just the message headers. In K9, there is a specific setting under account

I don't see that option on my Enhanced Email program nor in the stock email program and I can not use K-9 because y does not support outlook 2010 exchange yet.
