How good is it?
Anyone has a sample 720p video file that was created using HTC Desire?
Thanks.
I am curious too... anyone got a sample?

It sucs, upscaled video, low fps
Not impressed by it at all. Seems worse than my previous N95.

The image is crisp, but the fps is too low. I'm hoping it will get better when we get the official 2.2 update, but for now 480p is what you want to use
well, i don't know. i took one a few days ago (i forget which rom now) and the 720p one was relatively ok (low fps - 20 ish according to mpc-hc), but no tearing.
old vids i took on stock 480p was a tear fest on movement and unusable. as i've mentioned before though, i'd rather have a higher fps recorded with 480p. would make for a far smoother playback experience
ehh not impressed
I don't know, for my part I'm surely very impressed and happy with it.

This wasn't even in perfect light conditions and with the leaked rom from some weeks ago...
Remember to select hd in the video

Here is an example of the 720p video.... You will have to change the youtube setting to 720p to see the full quallity. Notice how jumpy it is.. like someone else said my old N95 was better.

Yes, all 720p recorded looks CRAP. I'm just hoping the official 2.2 is improved or optimized. No offense to the chefs, but I have seen some aspects of pre release roms not living up to the official versions. i.e. seen some slow sluggish unstable hero 2.1 roms. the offical one is 100% perfect.
we know the hardware of the Desire whould easily be able to handle 720 recording so lets wait and see.
glad its not just me.
yes sharp picture when not moving but what use is that
no one has released a video of official 720p recording, leaked roms mean nothing so we're just going to have to wait.
I previously had recorded choppy videos. Installed mcr, replaced my sd card with my new class 6 one and it went away.

Video recording on the Desire suffers drastically due to the lack of any stabilization. Extremely shaky unless you have it mounted perfectly still. I hope the final Desire release has some improvements over the leaked in this regard.
YouTube re-encoded vids are kinda pointless to judge quality from. Here's an original someone had shot a while back before they had higher bitrate recording available: http://db.tt/v7oVpw

Today the update to Froyo 2.2 was officially announced on engadget.
Al the readers will have the update probably installed by now. So all our wishes came true with Froyo. Did they ?
NO : Read the F%&&#%&%#& thread -> Flaws & Annoyances -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=666332
So When will I get :
A good working POP3 client that marks the read mail correct (Hotmail)
Proxy support
ans soooooooooooooooooooooooooo much more....
I hope Gingerbread will solve all those problems (and bring world peace as well).
So I can't wait for Gingerbread at the moment !
Q2 2011.......
I don't have 2.2 update. So forget gingerbread for now.

If you're waiting for an official HTC Gingerbread update for the Desire, you'd better get used to waiting because, IMO, it will never come.
Regards,
Dave
HTC will of released many flagship handsets by the time ginger comes out, making the desire a thing from the past and prob totaly forgotton about ,by the time ginger comes out there will be 10th times better handsets than the desire

Haha, and all this in Q4 2010
I doubt that HTC will release an official Gingerbread ROM for Desire but I really hope that there will be custom ROMs that are stable for the Desire.
BTW, Gingerbread will have to be available before 21/12/2012 or it will never come

Its a bit early for a gingerbread thread isn't it?!?!? I think it will take at least a couple of months before all the carriers release froyo.
I'd guess at there being a 20% chance that gingerbread will ever officially make the desire - even then we would be talking at least a year!

come on, HTC has definitely polished up it's records. It's the first to receive a device specific FroYo.
If they keep up the good work, we can expect Ginger around 01-01-2011 on our desire, And by then i guess the Desire is still a High end Phone, and will still be sold by many cariers. So i do think they are obligated to go for gingerbread as well.
Not the first, probably simultaneously with the HTC Evo

come on, i said as a manufacturer HTC is delivering Froyo to its devices first.
Forget motorola, samsung, lg and the rest. HTC is first (Besides google nexus)
And the Nexus is HTC, in a way! So HTC is best at OTA updates..
Been seeing posts that HTC will be discontinuing OTAs to Desire after Gingerbread. Now that Gingerbread might be releasing before the 11th this month, is that confirmed?
Personally I am not worried about official ota. We seem to forget that we are open source and we have xda devs to cook a new meal.
So an sdk is released and the devs cook it to work and be compatible. Then we test and play and show off.
Thanks xda

I'd rather they just fix Hotmail EAS for that.
Improved Email does a very good job of synchronizing mail though in its absence.
The only problem I have at the moment is moved mail on the handset doesn't move on the hotmail - but apparently that is an Exchange Active Sync problem not handset...
Anyone who may tips us how many HTC Desire phones sold worldwide until today?
We have read some news about how many iPhone4 or SGS sold especially at first days of their release, but personally I do not remember any similar data for Desire anywhere. Believe it is still the most popular Android device (also is the best one imho).
If Google releases 2.3 Gingerbread these days, also considering with the new Sense UI already in the new Desire HD and Z, believe we -HTC Desire owners- also will get either 2.3 or new Sense before the year-end.
(Submitted via my HP DV7 EO1275 laptop HTC Desire with official froyo as well
I'm not sure but HTC is expected to sell close to 20 million smartphones in 2010 and 3.3/4.5/7 million were shipped in Q1/Q2/Q3 respectively. The Desire HD launched Sept 15 and had surpassed the 1 million shipments mark by Oct 4. The Samsung Galaxy S sold 5 million units in 4 months. The Desire had more favorable reviews and standing so I expect the Desire to have had higher worldwide shipments than both of these SKUs. Back in April, HTC complained that demand was just too high causing shipment delays as production couldn't keep up and demand far outpaced their expectations.

I just read on engadget that the Htc thunderbolt can autofocus while video recording with a touch of the screen. How come that the Evo doesnt have this capability or no one have implemented this into a rom or anything yet?
Well for one, the evo is almost a year old, the thunderbolt has slightly better specs, and perhaps it wasn't a focus for users, so no one ever asked. Typically the camera is focused when recording.

the thunderbolt has vastly upgraded camera than the evo. Engadgets reviews rank it as much much better. I am sure this is why it can.
i want to tell all here that Dev "snq" has made what all here are waiting for.
He makes Camcorder working under Gingerbread with Sense 2.1 for the "DESIRE".
I think this is a really big step to get it working on our HD2 soon.
Or i´m wrong with it?
Hop all like this news!!!
Greetings from Germany

I think it could help us because the Camera and Camcorder Hardware from Desire is nearly the same which is used in our device.
So there is a chance to get it work for us, too.
We need some modifications but its really the first stone for us!!!
No news here, we are still missing a lot on the kernel side to be able to do 720p on our hd2s.
I believe charnsingh_online is working on it somehow, but our old buggy kernel is not going to enable us 720p. He is the guy who allowed nexus 1 users to use 720p in the first place so having him working on the hd2 is awesome!
Desire and N1 users have been able to do 720p for some time now. Though not on the ACE S rom, which i think is why they are so happy there.
Unlike Nexus One or Desire, HD2 cannot record 720P because of the kernel and omx venc library is not match.
All H264 encoder feature is died in our HD2.
I think we have to fix the venc in kernel first. The next step is omx venc lib.
