Extended battery for Desire - Desire General

Just found this, not sure if it has been mentioned elewhere...couldn't find it, so please forgive me if it's been posted before.
Extended battery for desire:
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/seidio-innocell-extended-life-battery-htc-desire-p24215.htm
1600mah, so only 12.5% better, if I've got the maths right!
However, the downside is I'm pretty sure I have read somewhere, possibly on this forum that some 3rd party battery manufacturers over inflate their specs. (If anyone could confirm this please feel free to do so, because I can not remember where I saw the original article). So, unless someone else has bought one, and can confirm it actually is better, I don't think I'll be ordering one!

link in my sig to The thread with the tests.. its a good and disturbing read.

That's the very one, thanks. So this really confirms that these batteries are a total waste of money!!

Are there any ( current ) reasons NOT to root?

Just wondering - there seems to be across various threads hints at reasons not too, such as iffy GPS & battery performance hit.
Anything I should be aware of before I try ( just made a Goldard )
If you screw up the Apps2SD installation, you can kiss your USB functionality goodbye. It's less concerning because it's affecting very few people, but it's more concerning because nobody really knows why it happens in the first place. They're still working on possible fixes.
I've experienced better battery life, myself.

Search! Read! Post new thread anyway? Sigh!!!
I came on the forum for a look around about 45 minutes ago, ever since I have been reading and reporting threads (as per recent mod request) that shouldn't exist in the first place.
Please search, read, learn instead, far more fruitful and doesn't damage the forum usability for everyone else.
Good thread. I learned something here.
Go easy on the OP.
It's not that easy to search and find the older threads because few people tag their threads. In this case he did fine the threads but perhaps he wants to know in the context of THIS phone? Also, this thingy evolves very fast so an updated info is probably warranted.
Sorry j-zeus if I was a little over zealous there. This was about the fifth thread I had come across. I'm sure you can appreciate the irony of stating in your OP that you had found other threads on the subject but that you had decided to start a new one anyway.
Anyway, I didn't mean to be rude or combative, I just wanted to point you in the right direction for future posts. It really does make life easier if the forum is well organized without multiple threads on the same subject.
Cheers.
One reason NOT to root now that I could think of:
Google IO is only few weeks from now (May 19-20), there they will most probably announce Froyo, Android 2.2.
It would be wise to wait what will come out.
APP2SD will be native if they include it in 2.2 (I [email protected]!).
@ farnsbarns
No worries - I do know how to search and did. I find it somewhat over the top as it throws up 28 thousand snippets of information that you have to trawl through only to find it's out of date already - and for a non techie like me this leads to masses of confusion. I post the question to get the latest feedback, not stuff from 2 months ago ( also as posted it helps others too ).
1 reason is: it wipes your phone and you get a random other rom, which might have stuff missing you are used to.
sense for example is missing for sure.
This is the kind of thread where my sig really makes a lot of sense...

I agree the search facility is not the best on this forum and after searching for a few hours its easier to give up as i have normally lost the will to live by then.
and it's funny that there's an exact same thread right below this one.

Sense is only missing if you... pick a ROM that's missing Sense. That's a very silly and misleading thing to say.
The default rootedupdate.zip that's provided with the unlocking method is just the stock ROM with root; it still has Sense. Half the ROMs on XDA for the Desire still have Sense. Saying you lose Sense when you get root is just flat-out false.

Although this is now going off topic can I say I agree the search on here is ****. Plus, if people keep having a go at people for starting new threads then you will probably finds this will stop people from posting what might be valuable info for fear of being rebuked.
And yes, why do people feel the need to preach about seaching? Get a feckin life!!!!

Thats not on really, I did try the search before I added my post and I was easily able to find threads relating to this topic which is where this question should have been posted. Even the OP acknowledges the existence of other threads in the.. er... OP.
I added a note to the J-Zeus in case he/she felt my response was over zealous as upon re-reading it it does sound a little sarcastic and he/she has responded amicably. The thread has been moved since my post.
I have been using this forum ever since I got involved in hacking my XDAII (new account since then as lost my details) and the desire section is the messiest I've seen, I guess because this is the first iPhone killing android phone and has proven to be unbelievably popular. I was only trying to ensure this forum remains usable, ordered and collaborative.
What I said was in line with the forum rules, your response isn't.

Coolio!
BTW I don't know if you have spotted but there are 3 search tools on the forum. The one at the top between new posts and quick links is a...
'site:xda-developers.com <your term here>' Google search.
But once you are in a thread, at the top of the OP there is the option to 'search this thread' which may help out in some searches as it is, of course, limited to the current thread only.
In any given forum section, in the same position, there is the option to 'search this forum'

By no means guaranteed but hopefully! I am sure they will make it exclucive to the N1 for a while. Even if there is no official update I rather suspect it'll find it's way onto the device through the Devs here and else where.

IMO that would be very strage if Desire wont get Froyo and would be dated after two months.
But I have seen Google Nexus One with Desire's OS, which means we will be able to put Nexus One's or Magic's Froyo if it wont be offered officialy ?

Why?

Why do some people post their entire EVO Software Information on their signatures? I mean, what do we care about what PRL or PRI version someone is running? lol It's just like those that post their Speedtest.net results in their signatures as well. hahaha

ohh, you had me on your side there until the speedtest comment, haha
Maybe for a similar reason as to why people post pics of their cars in their sigs...
I put my tethered speed test in my sig today, never have done it before.
And I used to be one who put the basics about my phone in my sig (phone, rom, kernel) but that changes so often it's just a pain in the neck to keep up with.

The same thing could be said for pretty much anything anyone puts in their signatures. Why bother have a witty quote? Or a picture of your favorite car or dog or sports team?
Well, actually the software version information might actually be helpful to give context's to a user's post. For instance, if someone is giving me advice on which ROM to install on my EVO, and according to their signature they are still using a Mogul-- I think I might take their advice slightly less seriously.

LOL Yea, I agree
I don't really get the point that much here either because the amount of variation is not that great. On car forums I've been on it's helpful because there can be so many variables at play in diagnosing a problem or someone may want to ask you for your opinion on some aftermarket product you're using. To each their own but it does seem e-penis-like here.

Would you rather they post the size, weight and girth of their schlongs? Err, no..
Well its not as bad as when people here pit their Mac book specs in their sign. But yeah that usually reserved for PC gamers showing off their builds

Where can I buy the HTC Desire Z?

Hi there! I'm unsure to whether I'm allowed to ask this question, but I did check and search the forums, no one has asked this question.
My question is pretty specific.
Note: (not asking about G2)
Where can i find an HTC Desire Z?
(specifically the NAM Bell Version with the correct bands to run AT&T 3G)
and for how much?
P.S.
I already know about the Negri Electronics one, just would like to know more options!
If you're not allowed to post links please PM me!
Thanks in advance!
There was a similar thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875692
And also some discussion of where to purchase on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=873476
I got mine from Negri. Not the cheapest place. But they were in stock (they have live webchat support on their site, and he was able to check it realtime), and it shipped about 2 hours later. Great service. In addition to the coupons linked in on of the above threads, there is also an offer which saves you $20 if you use Google Checkout (I used this one):
http://twitter.com/negricoupons
There are a couple other similar vendors around, if you look. Or there are some on eBay. You might be able to get cheaper if you look around, bid in the eBay auctions, etc.
The phone is absolutely fantastic. You will not be disappointed!

[Q] Whats the best radio for your Desire Z?

Hey
Lets hear some user expirences. What has been the best radio for you?
PLEASE state where you are from and (this is optional) what mobile provider you have. This is VERY important to see which is better or/and worst for you.
State things like battery life, signal, 3G speeds, etc....
I want to point out (since there are very rude people in this thread) that what works for one person, may not work for you, even if you are in the same city on the same provider. There are a lot of factors that go into radio experiences.
That being said, DO NOT POST HERE SAYING THIS IS USELESS. If you dont agree with the thread, simply dont enter it and do not post. From now on, Im going to start reporting posts that just whine and ***** about the thread and say nothing on topic. If you have nothing helpful to say, dont say anything at all
If you want to check them out and test/switch them out, they are located at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970809&highlight=radio
Thanks and good luck!
Not sure what you're trying to find out, but bear in mind that even if someone has the same carrier as you, your own experience with a specific radio might be a lot different from theirs due to the complex factors involved (e.g. geography, type of signal you're receiving, etc).
There is no "best" radio other than the one you find works best for you.

I'm using 26.10.04.03_M. Almost all the time, I'm within range of HSPA+ network in city center, but sometimes I'm in the area with extermely weak 2G signal only. None of the radios was able to maintain stable mobile data connection in such conditions. The only difference I see is that with current radio, my phone connects to my school's wireless network a bit faster than with shipped one. But that's all, battery life is also similar.

Great post. Thanks
been using the 26.13.04.19 about a now, ive tried both with and without changing the lib files. either way i havent found too much difference in speeds and battery life. truthfully i feel i was getting the same speeds on the 26.02.01.15 radio and the battery life was a bit better. where i live i get great reception overall, rarely do i find myself without h (4g) or 3g. this is the case with both of these radios, ill check back as i continue playing with different radios.
great idea for a post by the way, over time the poll may give insight to the best radio for our phones be it just a generic overview (as the best will vary from user to user)

Umm, no sorry, it doesn't work that way. If you don't want people to disagree with you, then the internet is not for you.
Besides, its not like stevie was being snippy or anything. Just politely stated the simple fact that the correct radio is largely related to your specific location and carrier (and there are quite arguably, the most important variables). He's pointing out a valid flaw in the main point of this thread and poll. Better for him to mentioned it, then for people to think that some poll is going to magically steer them to the "best" radio, which it is not.

Besides, steviewevie knows 100 times more than you ever will about smartphones, and very helpful to these forums. So it would be advisable not to smartmouth off at people like him, just because he doesn't agree with you.
Canada on Rogers : Vision_Radio_12.62.60.27_26.13.04.19 seems the best for me speedwise and connection wise and OK for battery life. For the battery life, the stock radio from Bell(where I got the phone originally) was the best, but I forgot what was it's number.
redpoint73: While you might find the poll useless to you, it can be useful to others. Your posts in this thread though are 100% useless.
@kinwolf This has been addressed who knows how many times. This poll cannot and will not offer credible information, and that's due to the fact that radio results vary between users, whether they're on the same provider/geographical area or not.
Regardless, I'm not "against" this thread, but I simply don't see how it is going to help anyone.

This post is a good example why this whole thread is fundamentally flawed. Saying your location is "Canada" is not specific enough. You need to get to the city level, location within the city, probably even the same cell tower. Even then, reception would still vary due to line of sight and distance to that particular tower. so you'd practically have to live in the same house, for the same radio to mean the same thing. So anecdotal information on what radio is "best" is completely worthless.

You are completely over-reacting and being overly defensive. Nobody has been particularly rude. If you think so, you clearly haven't spent much time on XDA! Nobody said this thread was useless, either. But people have given constructive criticism why this thread is fundamentally flawed, and given that criticism pretty politely. You have a pretty sad opinion on what constitutes "whining and *****ing". If you want to report me, go ahead. I doubt any of the mods would buy it.
The main reasons myself and others call out the technical reason that there is no "best" radio, is because there is already a lot of misconception about this topic. And it needs to be called out, so that other users take this thread for what it is. You've revised your OP quite a bit along these lines. But only AFTER the alleged "*****ing and moaning". So I guess the criticism was constructive and useful after all, wasn't it?
I'll have to agree with redpoint73 and also add with the fact that this issue also has to do with the hardware aspect of the phone. You surely don't expect radio's to be identical photocopies of each other. So two phones at the same location with same ROM's and RADIO's can handle signals differently. If you add the location and carrier factors on top of that, there's no best radio, location wise or carrier wise.
And besides, this phone has been out for about TWO years. If there was some solution for this it would have already been covered.
