Why did I returned my desire - Desire General

because it had some strange hardware problem when the volume was decreased to mute on its own as if were pressing minus constantly and when the volume was at 0 it started to vibrate nonstop. No it's not a software problem
Why did I get a refund instead of a new desire? Mainly because of 2 reasons.
1. The phone is useless in the sun. I couldn't even see who is calling. Beautiful beautiful 100 billions colors oled screen turns into void. No really I'd rather buy a device with 256 colors if these colors were plainly visible in the sun. Additionally I used to read books and with the oled screen I had to read white on black because of the battery life and this is annoying.
2. Battery life is just not bearable. Yes I'm using internet and what's why I bought it! Every day I had to think about battery and this is really boring. I had to stop my last.fm radio because 20 percent left in the middle of the day.
There are other problems but these two are the most important to me

It's a phone.

1. having auto brightness on ive never had any problems wit the screen
2. at the end of the day its a phone, not a notebook, so if ur using it just for the internet then u should exchange it for a notebook, cuz no phone ever made would last any longer if u were using internet for couple hours
normally when im at half hour break the phone uses about 10% of the battery using internet and listening to music, in general phone lasts a day or a day and a half, and im happy with it.

1. Use auto brightness OR put brightness control app shortcut which you can change brightness quickly.
My setting:
brightness at 10% (LOW, for indoor)
brightness at 40% (NORMAL)
brightness at 70% (HIGH)
I always use LOW and my eyes is pretty happy with that.
2. With correct settings you can have up to 2 days with medium - high usage.

Battery life is a joke on this device, I consider returning it too because of this.
I don't want to read any explanation and advices to use it as dumb phone!!!
My Omnia II could last 2 days with heavy usage pattern, this device dies in the middle of the day!!!

what's what I'm talking about. You have to think about your your power settings all the time. You have to stop this, screw that, get used with your eyes and so on.
NO this is not just a phone. If I wanted a phone I'd be still using my old siemens that works for weeks with no recharge.
But I'm not going to start a flame with fan boys. You like it - go for it. But don't tell me nobody warned you if you're about to buy it.
btw analog audio quality is also bad. You can hear periodic noise pattern.

@OP
Judging from your couple of posts here since joining, it's clear that the Desire has not impressed you. Hope you're able to find another device that's capable for your needs.

People need to relax with slamming the device because of battery life. There are several reasons your battery life may be terrible.
1. Your battery is not yet optimally conditioned yet. Cycle it through charges for several weeks and it'll improve significantly.
2. Your device is new so you naturally play with it all the time for absolutely no reason. That kills your battery life too.
Nobody would suggest you use this smartphone as a dumbphone. But do you really need Twitter, Friendstream, Weather, News, and Stocks widgets to all be active on your homescreen and autoupdating every hour? Is Google Maps Latitude really necessary? Does GPS and WIFI have to be constantly on? Is 100% brightness really necessary when auto-brightness looks just fine?
Take a more conservative approach to widgets and auto-updating and that will go a long way.
Btw, if you consider the battery life of the Desire to be bad, consider yourself lucky that you didn't go for the Xperia X10. That's a smartphone that you seriously have to use as a dumbphone to get through the day.
I'm a heavy user, and my Desire is at about 15% by the end of the day. What are you doing that's draining 100% by the afternoon?

Sorry to hear you had such a bad experience with the Desire.
Battery life imho is about the same as my Hero or Diamond or Omnia.
They all last a day with heavy usage. And when you leave the phone alone it will last two days.
Especially when using a lot of services that constantly use the internet. Those things use loads of power.
As for the sun, I use a anti glare protector now and that works great. I don't find the Desire extra hard to read outside when compared to the other phones I had. They all reflected so much in direct sunlight, they were all unusable. Without the anti glare that is, but anti glare us at the cost of quality.
Anyway, perhaps its best for you to wait. Wait for a phone with super amoled screen, bigger battery and more efficient chip.
But battery life is a common problem with electronics these days. Smartphones, laptops, netbooks and tablets all are build around the battery. A constant tradeoff between battery and power consumption. Endurance or performance.
Until we see some new battery technologies arise the battery will always be the weak part. Perhaps that super fast charging new Toshiba battery might find it's way into phones soon. At least charging it will be super fast

Well, I had same problems for a first two days. Phone was perfect, only screen wasn't visible in the sun, and also battery was empty in 5 - 6 hours. But then I played a little with settings and installed a Brightness Profiles application for a screen. Now when Im inside I have 15% Brightness and when Im outside I get 80% brightness with one click. Now screen is very well seen outside, inside it saves a lot of battery and now battery (with additional settings + task manager) lasts 1.5 days with a lot of usage or 2 days with normal usage. I had a lot of phones, but this one is perfect IMO.

btw I've just found in the device spec
Code:
Automatische Reduzierung der Klingeltonlautstärke, sobald das Handy in die Hand genommen wird
Because of this beautiful feature they got their treasure back. They have removed useful features from n1 (like trackball or active noise cancellation) and put useless ones into the desire. Way to go htc, way to go.

another important thing. They also managed to remove charging stripes so it is only possible to charge it with an usb cable. Now think how long will last the miniusb connector if you connect/disconnect cable once per day.

Hehe, let's not get mean here....
Here's what I don't get though: Why did you buy the Desire in the first place?
Certainly, you've read about the battery life. It's mentioned in every review.
And certainly, you knew about the charging contacts if you've seen pictures of the device.
Regarding the screen in direct sunlight, I don't get this argument. My last device that had decent sunlight legibility was my Compaq iPaq over 10 years ago when the screens were not backlit. I think the light came from the borders of the screen. Is there a single device available right now that provides comfortable outdoors viewing experience over long period of time?
It's almost like buying the Desire and then complaining that it doesn't have a hardware keyboard...

I read books on my Desire and I have a black screen with white text, not an issue for me. Should have got a decent app. Also re brightness, try turning the levels up if you are in a situation where you cant see the screen.
Battery gets better over a period of weeks, but like any device, if you use it smartly then the issue is minimised.
Also re the first comment......?
I think your post suggests you are not ready for a big boys toy and should invest in a pretend phone that flips up and makes sounds when you press the button so you can look cool to all your 7 year old friends at school. You will be pleased to know that you won't even have to splash out hundreds of pounds or be tied into a long contract with this option as the 99p shop often has a supply, if however 99p is too much, i'm sure you can sneak one into your pocket.
Oh and as a bonus, the screen will not be affected by sunlight! Awsome!
Also, if you would like lot's of unlimited free calls between you and your friends, open up your fridge, consume two yougharts and then attach some string to both ends of the cups and there you go! Free calls!
Now run back to the sandpit and leave the grown ups to have a mature discussion.
Good boy.

If I stop my Exchange sync in business hours (every 15 minutes) then I'll lost power after 15 hours (7:00-22:00) which is acceptable and similar to your experience (I charge every night).
But with my Exchange sync ON (I need it!) it dies very quickly.
Omnia II with push exchange tend to loose about 40% of charge during business day (push email vs. 15 minutes checks). It was approximately 4-5 times better.
Desire is sooooooooo much better device/OS/software combination that I'd never like to go back, the only drawback is this battery draining.
No, I don't sync Flickr, No, my battery is not super-new (3 weeks already), 'Always on' is disabled

I preordered the desire on 17 February yfi what reviews were available on that day?
And saying that one can get experience just reading about something is also stupid.

I don't get how some batteries seem so bad? I'm on 3 days and 14 hours since last plugged in. I did loads of surfing, some calls, about 30 photos, 20 texts, and I'm at 12% left. One thing is true, it took 2 or 3 weeks before battery got so good. Was terrible for first 3 or 4 cycles.

Battery life

I have charged it in the morning until it was full, and started playing with it.
It was on for 9 hours until the battery was completely dead.
I used it since 11:30 until 3:30pm, then I left it on standby for a 2 hours (battery was at 14%). I came back used it for another 2 hours, and it went dead.
Everything was on except for bluetooth and GPS.
Android Operating system used 83% of the battery and all the other application were under 5%.
I did quite a bit of browsing, photos, movies, youtube, downloaded some apps, etc...
What do you all think about the battery performance?
At the moment it is charging and I will leave it plugged in until the morning. It is also turned off.
What are your experiences? Opinions?
9 hours only? That's not good ... But probably you have quite some widgets that actively sync etc. etc.
i wouldnt worry to much as you probably just received it and you must have played with it for a while, and also try turning off the auto update of facebook, email etc etc
thats kindda dispointing, ... even with updating i expected it to last at least one full day, I mean when they put many widgets they should take into consideration the battery life ... hope its cuz the battery is new, and needs some few charges to feel maximum capability
As I said, I did have everything on apart from GPS and Bluetooth. (including updates).
And yes I did use it for 6 full hours (medium screen brightness).
Downloaded apps, watched videoclips, played some flash games, wrote e-mails, wrote texts, browsed the internet, etc... funnily enough I EVEN made 1 (one) phone call!
I wouldn't worry about it though. ALL my phones only lasted for about 8-10 hours the first day when I got them.
Doesn't new Lithium-ion battery needs a couple of charging cycles before
reaching optimal capacity!?
Would be nice if someone could update us in this thread about the battery life when you've had it a few days and it's being abused less
We must however point out a couple of things regarding the Desires out there at the moment, although we certainly do not wish to discredit anyone else's reviews.
We have been informed by a reliable source that some HTC Desires have been out for review for several days now, but these devices did not come from the same source as ours. These early versions did not contain the final ROM that we have been waiting for and I am reliably informed that those devices will have essential features missing. They have also had problems with the OS crashing and serious battery issues which is clearly down to the fact that Google had not completed the ROMS when the devices were shipped.

I'm fairly sure that 9 hours of constant use is pretty damn good for any device. If I use my Touch HD for browsing the net/listening to music/ syncing etc it will die in far less than that.
Remember that it is a miracle that the iPad lasts for 10 hours of constant use, and thats got a massive battery in it!
So yea get used to it! At least while you are playing with it being a new toy and all.

dont forget that the iPad has 9.7-inch (diagonal) LED display, so that shouldnt be a reason, and dont forget that the Desire's display is AMOLED which should be a battery life saver.
For the OP, if you could try using it the same (constantly) but disable the live wallpaper

Agree with the AMOLED, but it's running a 1ghz processor along with the already perceived power hungry android.... Gotta admit that if you expect it to last more than a few hours of playing with, will be sorely dissapointed.
Compared to my HD which had a 528mhz processor but lcd screen, which lasted less than 10 hours when playing with non stop.

It's not the same thing. "LED" is a backlit LCD-display, AMOLED is an active matrix OLED-display, completely different technologies.
TFT-LCD's use a backlight, OLED's has active pixels that light up per pixel and does not need an extra backlight.
The battery life is really poor.
I went to bed last night with it fully charged and this morning it was completely dead. Albeit I left meebo running in the background along with lookout and advanced task killer.
Nothing was set to update as I've deleted the friend stream and rss feed.
I'm pretty sure this phone should last a lot longer than 9 hours on standby.
If you have read the whole thread, you'll see that there might be an issue with the pre-released models. Unlocked/retail phones coming out next month with latest software will probably not have this issue.

I think someone should actually test turning everything off except gsm. No data connections, no updating of anything. No GPS, bluetooth, sync, no applications running. See how much it goes down overnight with everything off.
That could maybe be a good idea, just to see how much it goes down. But if you can't use the phone at all, I just can't see the point of having t his phone. It's made to be used and you are supposed to be connected at all times, so if HTC has made this phone with so bad battery performance, that just basically sucks.
On the other hand, it seems that the final ROM from HTC was just confirmed at Google this friday, so im guessing these early phones out there does not have the final ROM.

My Nokia E75, i run wifi all day, with push mail, and Zozoc (WiFi/GPRS Messaging client) and i can easily go through one whole day (and few hours). the screen is TFT, non-touch, and small.
I know that we cant compare cuz they are entirely different, but the point is, the battery life should not be (and i hope it is not) that bad, even when running apps in the background. one day (or few hours below that) should be decent.

The OS in the T-Mobile versions have already been approved by google, so its not a pre-release.
and i agree, someone should try to stop live wallpaper and updates (just use it as simple phone, calls, messages and a little bit of WiFi) and see how much that goes
I quote the following from the first detailed review from techradar
The battery in the HTC Desire was 'only' a 1400mAh effort - we'd have like to see a 1500mAh option there, as is the case with so many other smartphones at the moment.
We're also a little concerned about the battery life - it dropped rather quickly, and although you'll get a day's worth of use out of it under normal use (ie web browsing, calling etc) it can drop a little alarmingly fast at times.
We had a little look at what was munching on the power so much (thanks to the Android battery meter) and it seems to be the widgets (in particular FriendStream) and synchronising that's taking a lot of the power, along with the constant flicking to roaming networks and back to 3G.
We found a big increase in battery life if we stopped updating Peep, Friendstream and emails all day long, and when set to '2G networks only' the battery life also improved to three days' use without problem.

this seems good, this is decent! i dont use 3G much, i would probably update the friends stream on demand, and with a little bit above average use, i should get 1.5-2 days without problems (based on the review)

[Q] HTC Desire vs. Desire HD Battery Life.

A very simple quick question : Is the battery life of the Desire HD better or worse than the original Desire? (because right now the only thing that is between getting the DHD or the Desire is the battery life issue) I am much satisfied how the old Desire performs in batterywise (by reading the forums and reviews) but all the bad comments of the DHD dreads me to make the deal.
Have anyone used (or better owned) both devices and know any differences of these 2 devices with same level of usage? Can actually the improvement of the CPU compensate the drain due to the screen?
Some facts I expect from the device:
1. Dont need hourly updating with twitter fb etc or regular sense Sync. (once or twice a day is more than enough)
2. Looking forward to have a fairly moderate use of the screen for browsing ebooks etc.
3. Not heavy on making long calls.
4. Dont want to use spare batteries and nowhere to charge during the day after leaving home. So it MUST last 24hrs.
PLEASE share your experience, or I m afraid I might endup with the wrong phone for the next 2 years! Thank you all for your valuable comments....

@junta_mpb Thanks for the instant reply. So I ll take that DHD can last the day by my usage pattern right?
Ok now Much more convinced to make the deal with DHD .
So I presume the battery killer about the DHD is the screen. And for a day that I might need more juice till late, I spare the screen usage and be ok right? I also saw that the 2G can go upto 9+hrs! So it seems calling may not have a big impact.
Just curious how much do you think it will last, if I got a DHD, with my usage pattern, with additional 30mins gaming a day? Thanks a lot for the replies.

Text and calls don't seem to affect usage a lot. Based on what you wrote, I would say reading your books will eat the most out of your battery. I'm going out on a limb here and will say you should easily get more than 14 hours with heavy usage/e book reading. By heavy I mean more than 3 hours screen time.
3g is the biggest drain of the battery, in my experience and even with it on, I still get more than 14 hours with lots of surfing with around 3 hours screen time.
Standby drain with hourly sync takes 1% per hour.
Cheers from my DHD.
My battery is better than normal desire. I can actually playing most of the day with it and still have some juice left till I plug it in....

Just another quick question, do you keep the syncing, email and social network updates, to frequent checking (for ex 1 hr basis) and use GPS daily?
And how much "screen time" roughly do you get until the battery level gets critical?

Mine is set to hourly sync. Screen time is typically around 3+ hours.
Again, this usage gets me to 30%. I usually change then.
Cheers from my DHD.
I am fortunate enough to have both devices. I see myself as an average user and I easily get through a day with my dhd, 24hrs plus.
The battery life on my desire is abit better but not by much as I always plug it in every night in anycase.
I have Facebook, emails sync every hour, WiFi on the whole time, 30 to 40 mins of gaming, and listening to some music when I'm bored, 10 to 15 min on the web, atleast 4 calls made or received and texting the whole time. This is average usage for me, so I think you should be fine.

But getting mixed reviews is confusing. Shame that I dont know anyone with a DHD to check hands-on. And the battery needs some time to adjust, as I ve seen in this forum posts, and they had done the battery test straight out of the box I think?
Anyway I m still leaning towards the DHD for its big screen. But I dont see a point buying such a powerhouse with so much underpowered battery.
Maybe should I wait and see if something like Thunderbolt gets available for sim-free?
had Desire for 6 months and am a DHD user for less than 3 weeks now..
battery life is very similar, maybe slightly better on Desire..
am a light user; 5-10 sms per day, a call or two, sync only gmail & weather (every 2 hrs).. some web surfing (30 minutes) and installing/uninstalling of apps..
with above usage i charge battery every 2 days
I can't compare with the Desire (I'm comming from a Touch HD - the greatest phone of it's time ), but I can easyly get through the day with one charge. Obviously the screen is the biggest drain, so if you need the battery to last more, you have to limit your "screen time" and I keep my brightness set to auto. Due to the nature of my job, I make a lot of calls (maybe 40-50 mins a day), browsing+XDA ~40 mins a day, ebooks for about 30 mins (screen brightnes set to minimum for that), and when I have to use GPS (very rarely), I always charge the phone during that time, because I use GPS only while driving. Also I'm almost always on 3G, wifi and bluetooth always on. I don't use facebook or twitter, but I sync the news feeds, weather, POP3 mail, gmail is set to push, sense is also syncing... and I think that's about everything worth mentioning.
I rarely play games though, so this might bring the battery down if you do, but I think you can still get through the day (actually that's 16 not 24 hours - you have to sleep sometime ). Also if you have a "battery heavy" day, you can always put some juice in the phone while driving home after work.

Just another quick question, do you keep the syncing, email and social network updates, to frequent checking (for ex 1 hr basis) and use GPS daily?
And how much "screen time" roughly do you get until the battery level gets critical?

Here is roughly my day.
Wake up at 6am phone off the charger walk to work and play on it for about 15min.
During work I play (same games some internet some engadget ) here and there for about 10min plus 30+ on my break so all together will be more than 1,5hrs finish work at 4pm and my battery is at about 60-70% get back home surf the net for half hour and turn on hotspot (don't have proper internet at home) this itself drains a lot of battery but if I don't use hotspot and play with the phone instead I manage to get till about 5 5,30 till phone battery goes down to 20% and this is very heavy usage. Had days (Fridays ;p) where after work I didn't use the phone much just few text and it lasted me till next day with about 15% left.
Things is I don't call much. I have 900min and this month used only 100 (lol)
My updates are every 3hrs, push for gmail (i have one account for my regular emails and one just to store contacts without any crappy email addresses) gmail used as exchange account.
Screen on 23% brightness.
Lately battery is draining fast because I've installed whatsapp as my miss is abroad so we save some pennies

[SOLVED] Final Decision : Going with the Original Desire!
I was doing some more research, and Decided to buy the 'Old' Desire
And Thank you all for your contribution with experiences and thoughts, guys trust me it did help eventhough I didnt go for the DHD !
So for everyone I m gonna breakdown the reasons for my decision. (at least on the paper Desire outscored the DHD)
Battery Life
A huge factor if not the critical. I found that Desire has better Battery life than DHD, in comments I found Desire "Only lasts a day\ have to recharge everyday" etc and with DHD I found "Battery life is abysmal dont last the day\ have to plug in for midday charge" etc, but I know some of you guys anyway manage to keep the juice to last the day, anyway Desire 1 point...
Quadrant Score
http://smartphonebenchmarks.com/ (with 1GHz ranking) WOW this is INCREDIBLE ! Desire outsmarted the DHD came up with 3rd in benchmark with 1. Samsung Epic 4G 2. Samsung Galaxy S 3. LG Optimus 2X (dual core anyway) so its actually second place considering both first two are identical. (now who says Desire is not for gaming???)
Techradar No. 1 phone of all times
with DHD on the 3rd place http://www.techradar.com/news/phone...e-phones-in-the-world-today-645440?artc_pg=21
Pixel Density
Not a big point but anyway a point for desire.
Looks
DHD looks minimalistic on the face and Desire looks good too. And the physical Buttons on Desire... (are they better than the capacitive counterparts?)
Design
I dont like the patchy design of the DHD to be honest. Looks less durable and what about the gap between the bottom door? Cant put a custom cover to get bigger battery even. And the kickstand is utterly useless for many if used with a casing which is mostly the case. And the camera protruding out is menacing and accident prone.
Size and Weight
164g Vs 135g big deal. Pocketability issues, bulge, and for the long hours at the University it's gonna cost me some uncomfortable time.
Camera
Desire's cam is not the best, washed off colors etc.. but is the cam on the DHD fantastic? Nope, focus errors, too much sharpening etc. But HD footage is really cool. Not a big improvement worth considering I think.
DHD issues
Reception issues, (death grip?) , Sometimes lagging (occational 100% CPU usage, saw in a thread in XDA) Desire's problems were ironed out mostly I guess with the hardware revisions. No more overheat etc....
Loudness
Desire is louder than DHD http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_desire-review-468p8.php and http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_desire_... my Desire. Any more comments are welcome. :D
Just one more thing to add, I think the DHD is an overkill. They've got the same snappy so the apps should run at the same speed. And android doesnt have too many 3D games (yet) and I think Desire will do fine until at least the end of this year. Then the dual core phone will go mainstream and prices will fall. So even with the Adreno 205 I dont think DHD is leaps and bounds ahead of the Desire in technology aspect. (buy anyway we can port the DHD rom to desire !!)
Cheers.

It's not the same snappy. Desire hd has the second generation version which uses less power and overclocks better.

This review shows the DHD battery lasts longer:
http://www.fastbutter.com/Article/227/HTC-In-Depth-Review--HTC-Desire-HD
"Despite Desire HD has a battery of 1230 mAh it sweep the carpet with its older sibling Desire with its 1400 mAh battery. When Desire goes out after almost exactly five hours Desire HD still have 19% battery left and rolls on for one hour and two minutes more- despite the smaller battery."
I guess the people with battery problems are having the cpu draining /init bug.

Desire HD battery issues??

Hi Guys,
I actually have a HD7m but my dad quite liked the 4.3 inch screen and was now asking me to buy a similar handset. We went out and he was quite impressed with the Desire HD.
But the catch, when I researched online, I found out the battery issue on practically every thread and community.
Now my problem: He is an old man and can get cranky at times. Currently owes a Nokia C6 and is pissed with the touch screen. So is it wise to buy him Desire HD even with the bad battery life?
Or worse case scenario, I swap my HD7 for his Desire HD????
Should I go for it or should can you guys suggest something else equally fluid??
It doesn't have battery issues once calibrated. I have 1-5mA battery drain on standby, that's even when running MSN and CallerID2Voice App in the background. And I can still get hours out of it when using it. Just recharge it every-night. I doubt your dad will be a smartphone addicted guy.

Hey,
Thanx...no he isn't a smart phone addicted guy. But the battery was so obvious an issue, I had to ask the experts here. Also, what exactly do you mean by 'calibrated'?
I mean, I have been an Android user before, but not quite sure what calibration is ?
He is a simple user with checking some mails everyday, music and some websites may be...thats about it, HTC Sense and all makes no difference to him actually...
If its battery life your after, buy a Johns Phone, you get 3 weeks between charges.
After you battery has been "run in" and calibrated you will get at least a day with light usage. Remember this is a powerful smartphone.

The battery calibration concerns only those who are using a custom rom. (here's a short article with app that does it for you if you're interested). I wouldn't recommend the DHD for my own father. Whatever you do to it you'll almost always have to charge it overnight, with stock rom it could be even twice a day. This isn't a problem for smartphone enthusiasts, but for oldschool people (like my father) who think phones should last a week without charging this can be quite off-putting. The DHD is also starting to get kinda old already, so you might wanna take a look at some newer phones. A good alternative could be the Desire S, as it has almost the same features with a slightly better battery.
And to those who can't admit that the DHD has bad battery life I just have to say that the out-of-the-box battery life could and should be a lot better. To get it lasting as it should takes a bit of effort which shouldn't be required from a normal user.

depend on what you consider a good battery life, some may say getting a day is good enough, but some define good as atleast 2 days.

Absolutely right. I'm tired of hearing people evangelising that the DHD's battery is fine. It patently is not. Even when you severly rein back the device's features (features which HTC flaunted to get us all hooked), one ends up with 25-30% at the day's end.... And if you have a 'heavy' day of calls/browsing etc, you'll have to top up to get through the day.
But I still regard HTC as just about the best of a bad bunch...
Ok, sorry to hijack this thread a little.
The battery is fine, there are no issues with the battery. Your problem with the battery is that its small. Before you bought the phone did you not look into the battery capacity? I did, I knew it was smaller than the Desire's battery. Out-of-the-box it will act like any other lithium-ion battery that is just out-of-the-box. That "bit of effort" , what, plugging in your charger when it requires a charge.
These guides to correctly charge lithium-ion batteries are largely mumbo jumbo (charge to 100%, turn off, charge again for 250,000 hours, turn on, drain battery, rinse & repeat). Just charge it overnight, when your asleep.
Any smartphone with comparable usage will last around the same time and require a daily charge. If you want a phone that will last days between charges, don't buy a smartphone.
If you turn off all the bells & whistles, use 2G only and use it only for calls & sms', just like a regular phone. It will last days between charges.
If you want a powerful smartphone with a large screen, and lots of features, your battery is going to pay for it.

I didn't mean that the battery was bad quality or anything, just that it is a bit too small for such a powerful phone. And yes I was aware of the battery capacity and I don't mind, but again there are people that require more from their phones.
And the instructions to close connections when you're not using them and turning down the screen brightness etc. are plain stupid. I bought a smartphone so that I can get my email whenever and wherever and to enjoy the big screen and not so that I can receive emails only when I choose to and so that I have to squint to see something from the screen when the brightness is set to the lowest. This is just a couple of the features I need ofcourse, but for me it's important to always receive emails instantly and not only when I can afford to spend some battery on internet connection.
When I was still running stock rom I could barely get through a day at work (8 hours). I had mobile network on the whole time and the screen brightness set at about 50% (which I think should be used at 100% all the time to really enjoy the screen) I talked for about half an hour during the days, sent 10 texts and listened to music/played/surfed on the internet for about 3 hours in all. When I got home I had to charge it. This ofcourse is everything one could need, but there are smartphones with better battery life.
Now of ofcourse when I have a custom rom that's tweaked and everything there's no problem with battery life, but that shouldn't be necessary to do and it's quite a lot to ask just so you can have a decent battery life. That's why I was talking about out-of-the-box battery life.

If you want to receive emails and text, I find that GSM is fine for that. If you want to go internet browsing, just switch on to 3G.
Smartphones these days have basically a different definition of battery life to the old nokia symbian and similar phones of old. Those could go up to a week. Smartphones on the other hand are considered awesome if they can last 3.
I do have to say ultimately I think HTC sold the battery life a bit short on the DHD. 1230mah I think is really just making way for all the other top-of-the-line features that it had when it came out.
HTC have released a great number of variants of this phone now, all with better iterations of design and also with bigger batteries because of this.
1400-1500mah (or even above) I think is really what you need with a 4.3" display phone. 1230 would be far more acceptable for a <4" display. Although it can be made quite livable for a day or two with an excellent custom rom, I don't really think it's enough for a basic consumer using the standard rom. That and the speaker/audio out are the two biggest pitfalls of the DHD imo.
Sensation is now HTC's newest 4.3" phone which has a good 1500mah battery. I hope Sense 3.0 doesn't wear it down too fast!
Ultimate thoughts: Although it's a great phone, I think it's a power user's phone more than anything. You will definitely only get the best out of it by customising to it's best potential, which is also when you get acceptable battery life. If you don't, it really does seem a waste.

I had the same sort of expectancy out of the battery using it moderately during a day at work out of the box. However with custom ROM installed I have found the battery to last easily the whole day with the same usage and probably have approx 40 - 50% left after 15hrs on battery.

I am extremely sorry but I disagree with u completely. You are talking as if you buy an expensive car but dont drive it too much as it eats a lot of fuel. If you want to just drive around, why dont you just get yourself a mopet. The point is, i have bought an expensive car TO DRIVE it around. If I buy a smartphone and not use its SMART features, why am I buying it for??? If I practically shut all the reasons why I bought this phone, WHY the hell am I buying it??
There is an old saying that comes to mind that it takes guts to stay in the minority. If the battery is flawed, ACCEPT it.
Anyways, I have got my answer. Thanx for your reply nonetheless.
As everyone says depends on usage.
For one thing i went from 80mA down to 8mA just by updating the radio which came stock.
Now with a different rom and kernel I get -1mA on standby, juicedefender is also a nice app. The battery life depends on your setup though, I easily get 2 days of moderate use/music/games/calls etc.

Hey thanx man...But was just wondering, with very moderate usage, will it still be over in no time?
Also, the other thing worrying me is the memory card issue...I cant afford to lose one card after another once I buy an expensive phone, u know what I mean...
The battery life is acceptable with moderate use on stock rom, if you're a power user you will have to stay close to a charger
There's no memory card issue from the DHD's part, it's just the crappy "freebie" sdcard (samsung?) which comes with the phone that stops working. The people who are complaining that the DHD breaks sdcards are those who buy cheap, bad quality sdcards or get a warranty replacement for the original one, which will be just as bad. The solution to this is to buy a better quality microsd card (costs about 15€) if the original stops working. Mine's still working great though.

After receiving a replacement 'new' phone, and having problems with my SD Card from the very second it switched on, I complained to HTC about the issue and the man on the end of the phone admitted around 500,000 phones that had been dispatched has been shipped with KNOWN issues & SD Card incapabilities. If you went out today and bought a brand spanking new card, in theory the phone WOULD NOT and the SD Card WOULD NOT fail.

I don't mean to hijack you here mate, but you assume/claim that:
'HTC marketed the DHD on the basis that it's architecture was such that it didn't need a higher-capacity battery to do its job.'
Well I take it that you assume this on the basis that Leprechauns are real and are roaming New York city as we speak? If HTC were doing any market research at all, they would realize that even devices with smaller screens have a bigger battery than the one they have put into the DhD, including the Desire Z & Desire's batteries?
I remember when I was looking at reviews for the original Desire, as I fancied one, the main complaints were the battery life, and the fact people only got a day's charge on it. So I thought fair do's, big screen, big price to pay? If HTC had done any research, they would have realized that people wanted better battery life, a better quality screen, better sound quality?
You want to know what the real reason is behind HTC putting a small battery inside the Device? Well it's the fact that the entire thing was rushed, and I mean rushed? There's evidence of this in the build quality, the software, the placing of different things within the phone and also the bad batch issues HTC experienced.
The HD was leaked in September/October, it was released by November, this is not normal for any device that becomes 'leaked'. HTC used a bad screen, imported most of the software from the original Desire, obviously making edits to make it Sense 2.0, but you can clearly see they didn't change everything? If you set the Android Pattern Lock Screen, you can see that it doesn't fill the whole screen, the IME is the standard HTC one with some arrows slapped in at the bottom? They didn't even change the size of the keyboard?, this is more evident if you use the IME in landscape mode, its hard.
What sort of company places an Antenna in the Battery Cover? It's true, remove your Battery Cover and you'll loose all signal? Pretty risky move for HTC, seeing as the Battery Cover is VERY easy to 'accidently' break, and frankly your screwed then right? It's like they designed the phone, forgot the Antenna, then quickly though 'Where the f*** is this going?' and decided to place it there? In my opinion, and a few others, they did this with the battery, they made the device too thin, and in reality they just couldn't fit everything in. The Desire S which is slightly thicker, packs a brilliant battery. Problem solved.
The build quality of the phone, is not one of a £500 price tag. Some parts of the phone squeak whereas others just do not feel adequate to the pricing of the device. There again we live in a world where no matter how much you pay, something always seems to be wrong.

hello everyone, i am new to this community, sorry for my bad english, i would need some help. i have a htc one x for several weeks now, and i have a hudge problem with the battery life on this device, im a really hudge fan of htc, but im dissapointed, so for example, i have 9/10 lines of battery life in my settings menu, i plug it in , and start playing dead space, after 40 mins of playing the battery actually dropped by 2 lines , and i had left 7/10 lines of battery. how is that even possible??! all the phones i had, laptops, etc that require a battery worked in the folowing order: if you plug it in and took the battery out, it still worked, so if you had the battery in, it both keept alive the phone/laptop/every device on the world, while charging the battery, so if you use it, it wont loose power, but gained it. i wached a lot of videos and posts of people explaning hot to get more guice out of htx one x , and some wore like, well , dont use it too much, or do ont turn on your phone to see the clock cause it will save some battery..... ?!?! well i dodn't pay a ton of money to have a phone in my pocket and not be able to see what the time is, or play something/ lisen to music , without actually noticing that in 2-3 hours i wont be able to make a call, yes its a strong phone, and verry good one, by design, by hardware, and software, but the sad thing is the battery, does anyone have a mirracoulous tip for me? and perhaps others as well... (oh and i charged it as ppl from htc told me, first three times with the battery empty for 8 hrs..)
the battery will run out whilst charging, under heavy usage, because the phone is using more power than the charger can provide.
laptop chargers can handle this, simply because the charger provides more power to it. (and the fact laptop batteries tend to be several times the size of the hox)
you should only find that whilst using a battery/cpu intensive task such as navigation (it uses GPS, data sometimes, and the screen is on) that the charger won't be enough, but for most other things, like general web browsing etc, the charger will do it quickly enough
the screen is what takes basically all of the battery, so you can reduce that by making the screen brightness a bit less bright..
the battery life when the screen is off is incredible. WAY better than any other phone i've had. when the screen is off, the phone uses about 1% battery every 2 hours or so. and that was with wifi etc connected and autosync still switched on.
whether the phone will last you all day or not, depends on your usage. if it doesn't, then either make the brightness even lower, or you can purchase a portable charger. or a battery case.
there's no point saying well other phones have better battery life like an iphone. lets be realistic, the iphone DOES NOT have better battery life. it may have had decent standby battery life, but so does tegra 3, probably better than iphone now. when you actually use an iphone, or any other smartphone for that fact, the battery disappears just as quickly as this one does.
Tegra 3 standby is awesome. Just tried an experiment. Please note that this is with 3g or WiFi on all this time and with auto sync.
Again this is just to demonstrate standby time.
For the op, are you sure you don't have a rogue app? Also are you using an HTC charger?

i know stand by is awseome, and i am using the original out of the box charger and cable, but i might go ahead since i know a thing or two about electronics and modify the charger at 2 amps vs 1 amp currently.. this will give me faster charging, but im still researching, cuz i have second toughts
p.s. do you have a costum rom? it doesent look like a prtscreen from htc one x

Unlikely. Unless the phone knows it can draw 2 amps, it has to assume a 1A capable charger (designated by connecting the data pins together).

I used it all 11 hours. Mostly reading second book of Game of Thrones in Kindle app. Checked some net sites, xda forum app, some blogs. Few calls and texts. All the time on wifi. Was sick in bed. Auto brightness, but as my eyes didn't liked strong sun is can say that it was quite dim inside.
But it probably depends on usage. Yesterday I was reading on the beach and I had 4 hours screen on time. Probably brightness all the way up as it was quite hot sunny day.
On normal day I get 4-5 hours screen on time.
Full stock One X.

batteries nowadays can resist pretty much, and unlike a laptop battery that has a chip in it and it records every charge, and then after x charges it suddeny stops working correctely this is cuz of the company chip they insertet to make is useless after x charges, a phone battery is just a normal one, this is tested, i opened a laptop battery and took the chip out, and via com port on pc, i was able to retrive the data storred by the company that produced it, but was not able to reset it, (comsporacy) lol . so i will buy a htc battery, not necesarry one x's and i will test it my charging it a couple o times bowth with the amp maxed, from 1 to 2 (1,1..1,2 etc) and voltage from 5 to 10 V, maby ill get a result, that is a little better than the technique i saw a couple pages away about charging your phone, then powerring it off, charging it again, then pwr on charging it again etc, forgot the method name, but in my opinion bubjecting a rechargable battery to so manny fluctuations of current in so little time does not sound good, my idea of amping the charger or the voltage by just a little sounds a little better in my opinion

you have a lot to learn then.. Batteries can explode, and they do: here's a video of some guys iphone setting on fire in his back pocket, turned out to be the battery that caused it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIRXDeEzlcw&feature=youtube_gdata_player
That isn't my pure reasoning behind my thoughts anyways, whatever experiments you do with higher amp chargers won't do anything, because the phone won't accept more charge than the circuitry allows. Which happens to be a safe amount for the battery. This is so the battery doesn't get damaged, and in some circumstances, set on fire or explode.
If you take the battery out and start prodding things at it and take it over its limits, be prepared for fire or explosion. Like Ben said, put yourself and only yourself at risk if you choose to do it.. And be wise and have a fire extinguisher ready.

I've been having the same issue as well. The stock ROM on HTC one X drains the battery rapidly. For me, In normal day which includes listening to music, playing games, browsing and making calls, my battery would last maximum up to 20 hours; meaning that every night when I go to bed I had to charge it for the next day.
This problem was battling me a lot. I learned that the stock ROM is taking advantage of all (4) CPU's and memory even while in idle. The whole battery consumption relies on the CPU usage and Memory management.
I moved to a custom ROM called ViperX 2.6.0. I'm very satisfied with the result. It seams that they've managed the CPU and memory in a very good and neat way. The ROM has a lot of tweaks.By default, when installing the fresh ROM and wiping the battery stat, the battery would last one and half a day. By doing a number of simple tweaks such as disabling the animations on transitions, disable fast dormancy and disable smart sync you can have the battery up to two days.
Check the attachment, it's a screen shot of my battery usage.
Hope this helps.

How the hell are you getting this much screen time ?!
I dim the screen to the lowest brightness and disable
sync and sometimes in flight mode, and I can hardly get
3h of screen time! I mostly read on it, so it shouldn't
be battery intensive.
oh, and If I use it outside it lasts even less 2-2.5h.
What's your secret?
Oh and I use the latest CM10, and downclock my
cpu to 800-1000mhz

Then your phone is knackered.
I can get 4+hrs screen on time with auto brightness, auto sync, stock cpu levels with wifi on.
That's no secret, that's just what it does.
As for 'just reading' - you can easily get over 13hrs screen on time with lowest brightness & flight mode - I've tested it myself on the Kindle app.

AOSP roms get much less battery life than Sense roms, 3hrs screen on time is about average.
I'm currently running CM10 with Neo kernel 7.2 @ 1.3GHz and getting almost 4hrs screen on time. With Faux kernel it was usually around 3hrs.
Chrisjcks, what do u mean by "your phone is knackered"?!
Its a new phone! I just got it 2 weeks ago.
Michealtbh, it may be somthing with the APOP rom, but I really
hate using sense ... I want to try this Neo Karnel first,
Can I just flash it on my cm10? (without wipe)
Where can I get it?
How do I know which kernel is im my current rom?

Your phone is fine.
You can find it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1873615
You have to flash the boot.img through fastboot then the modules in recovery. You're probably using CM10 kernel atm

Ok, but don't moan of battery if you are running a beta (alpha) custom rom.
The HTC ONE X battery is fine, especially after the sense 4.1/4.0.4 upgrade from 2.17
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
Michealtbh, Thanks!
I'll try that soon. (it's stable, right?)
I'm now testing the new Nightly.. it's real good and battery life,
seems promising, looks like I'll get 3.5-4h of screen time there
(No sync with low brightness though)
chrisjcks, I'm not using alpha roms, just the stable ones.
and this DOES feel very bad battery life to me, I come to the hox
from Motorola milestone, and there I could easily get 7-8 hours
of screen time with wifi. (and it has smaller battery and 40% overclocked!!)
How much do you get on the new stock?
When I was on stock i remember it ran out after half a day,
only using it for music and taking some videos.
Battery life varies a lot. On stock in London I get a full day screen time of around 2-3 hours with 3G on all the time. Which for me is fine.
Last weekend I was in Portsmouth and the signal was very patchy and my phone died within 10 hours. Hardly any screen on time.
So it does really depend and will vary for user to user depending on your signal and how the phone is set up.
Mine is usually on auto brightness, and auto syncing on.
Today I've been at home as I've got a damn cold but my screen on time is over 4 hours in good signal and wifi. Same setup. So you can gather from this that signal, data used, etc can affect battery life in many ways.

LG G4 - Pitiful battery life

Hello all,
I recently purchased a LG G4 Back In July , on Verizon, switching over from A Galaxy Note 3 (Tmobile). Honestly I really really like the phone, but I think the battery life is pitiful for a $700 dollar "Flagship" phone. I mean not once has it ever lasted the full day. I had to buy a spare battery kit, with 2 batteries, and days when im out from 6am to late at night, I go through 2 batteries, and have to put the 3rd one in. I mean , this is simply unacceptable for a phone like this.
Also, the camera is excellent WHEN it works. A lot of times, it doesn't take the picture right away, there is a delay, and many times it falls out of focus. This is certainly not the high quality camera they advertised.
I am hoping there is a way to fix these 2 issues, mainly the battery issue though because it is awful in my opinion. Is there any tweaks or fixes for these issues?
You've barely given any relevant information other than how unhappy you are with the device, so I would suggest that you elaborate on that.
You could inform us if you're a heavy/light user, if you keep NFC, LTE, Bluetooth, Syncing, Wi-Fi, on during the whole day or maybe if you are used to 100% brightness display. Maybe you should check in your settings what is draining your battery and provide us the info.
I'm having a pretty good experience with the phone so far. It surely lasts a whole day with 3:30 to 4h SoT. I don't even need/have a spare battery.

One person having an issue doesn't mean it's not a great camera. You'll find it's likely still the best flagship camera of any OEM.
Battery use is so dependent on which apps you run, which mods you have, how often the screen is on, what brightness, signal strength, wifi, bluetooth, etc etc etc...
I came from a galaxy s3 and reckon the battery on g4 is awesome. I use it solidly on internet for 2 hrs a day (to and from work), check messages etc through the day, usually internet at lunch. And then evening time check facebook etc over WiFi infront of telly.
I unplug at 6am and plug in around 11pm with around 3% left. I bought a 2nd battery and only needed to use it twice. It has to be how you're using it.

13 hours on battery for me today and still 71% left. Light usage but it does illustrate that the battery life can be excellent.

of course, you can get excellent battery life on every smartphone - just put it in aeroplane mode..
I get MAX 3h of SOT time on my G4 - this is with fixed brightness at 65% (at all times) and only wifi and 3g enabled (NFC, bluetooth and everything else is turned off all the time)
to be fair I have yet to own a smartphone that lasts me more than 4h SOT..
the thing that annoys me the most is the broken knock code used to unlock the phone - it works 20% of the time at best
its a completely broken feature LG has not properly addressed since launch of the device (I am on V10e software)

There have been numerous firmware updates since. Have you ever performed a full factory reset after getting those updates ?
If the answer is no, then this is one potential reason for poor battery life. What you could try is to clear the system cache in recovery. Note, i said system cache not apps cache. Idea here is when updates come in there could be conflicts and it causes the system to work harder. clearing system cache might help, if it does not then the only option is a factory reset and then a manual install.
not restore. You install apps in batches, monitor, then install more and so on. You can restore contacts etc. but apps themselves will have to be reinstalled. Sometimes apps go rogue and have to be reinstalled. Its hard to tell which app is causing the issue. Otherwise you could just reinstall whatever app that seems to be taking up more than it should be.

How do you access the net. How good is your signal. What are you doing when you access the net.

What types of shots are these. It can happen with portraits some times. It will focus on the background behind the person instead of the person and the face becomes softer and the background very sharp.
For this set focus little above the chest instead of the face. If they are wearing dark clothing this will cause other issues so focus on something else at equal distance that isn't dark.
Always check the shot at the pixel level soon after you took it. Rather than at the end of the day.

Just to clarify: I had everything turned on for those 13 hours - wifi/data/bluetooth/GPS. I also made 2 phone calls and did a bit of Chromecasting using the BT Sport app for a couple of hours. Or to put it another way, I didn't take any measures at all to preserve battery life.
I used to complain just like you're doing OP ( @dredmentia ) and fixed it all with a Zerolemon battery .
Is the phone bulky/no leather back/not easy to handle... , it sure is but if battery life is crucial then it gotta get fixed.
End my day anywhere between 7 to 13 hours of sot depending on WiFi or 4g and high CPU freqs, tried light usage and hit 3 days with 12 hours sot. Snap/insta/twit/fb/periscope/... Nothing kills this battery in a day.
When and if we get a kernel I'll move back to factory battery at least then I know I'm in control of how CPU works coz while optimizing the phone for wakelocks that's the only thing I have no control over...
As for now I'm just trying to burn thru this battery every day so I can charge it every night...
Last phone was a Z3 Sony and that really grabbed my attention with its battery life in stock form, almost too perfect, Almost.
