I am wary of downloading apps from marketplace, there are several i would be willing to pay for, but being that I flash a new rom every couple weeks, i am worried that i will lose those apps i pay for. Is there a way to download the cabs for these apps or do I have to find another way to go about it

When you sign in with your windows live ID, it knows what apps you have paid for and you can re-install them. I've been reloading mine after each flash.
i got a cab file from this forum that allowed me to choose if i want the app saved to my device or memory card. maybe worth looking for that so you could keep the file backed up on your pc??
I can email it over if you PM me your email address

When a program is installed from the marketplace does it even download a .cab file to the phone? I dont see the point downloading it to the sd card if its NOT a cab as you would STILL have to reinstall it after you flash.
Like it was said earlier when you use the marketplace it keeps track of your installs so you can reinstall everything.

That cab allowed you to INSTALL the app to the device or the SD card, not store a cab. Marketplace doesn't allow the download of cabs like you are thinking.
In any case, old versions of Marketplace get forced to download and install the latest version the second you try to connect to the store, there is no way around it. What you have sounds obsolete, and will get overwritten once you connect to the store, anyway. And the latest version of the Marketplace also now allows the choice to install apps to the device or the SD card.
Don't worry about saving the CABs. Once you've bought something on Marketplace, its yours. You can download them over and over, apparently an infinite amount of times.
If it still bothers you, just get the apps somewhere else, not Marketplace. Most every app on the Marketplace can be bought elsewhere, such as online stores like Handango. These stores will have a CAB version for you.
It seems i am in the wrong here, sorry for that!
Without getting into specific details, I've obtained all of the .CAB files for the applications I *purchased* from the Windows Marketplace. Now every reflash it's a simple matter of having the appropriate .CAB files in my XDA_UC folder so they get re-installed with the ROM setup.
But as I previously stated, the Marketplace ties your purchases to your live ID and you can re-flash and re-download as much as you like.
The apps will definitely be availble to be re-installed once you are ready to install them again. For as long as you sign on with the log in information you purchased them with of course.
Sorry to bump this post, but is there any work around for having to install marketplace apps over and over again after each flash? I have 42 apps from marketplace and some of them don't download properly when I press 'Install all' after a flash. I'm glad I have unlimited net at least

Na what is this application anyways, give it a try and see if it works. Did you have some specific questions on it or what?
I downloaded the app, but it errors during the install. I was just wondering if anyone else had this app working before I spend time trying to resolve the issue.

What errors are you getting when installing it.
I just tried it again, and it said it installed successfully, but was made for a previous version of windows.
Now I'm not sure what it did with the install. can't find the installed app, or a way to configure it.
Ummm would it be under java program. Or just browse under accessories possibly.
I don't see the app anywhere, but after rebooting, I notice my IE setting are pointing cookies, etc... to the storage card. Something's working. Not sure how to check for e-mails going to the storage card?
There is a Pocket IE folder on my storage card with the above referenced folders

I cant take it because need register in these site.
It's says made for previous version when you install, but works good on my 6.1 blackjack. It moves pie to storage and downloaded email/attachments to storage. It's not necessary to run a mailstorage program because the cab takes care of the changes.
no need for all that in 6.1. go into Settings/IE Settings/Temporary File Path and change the IE Cache Path
Is there a way to get MSN Messenger onto my phone for free or is it a purchase only? I found an old version of Messenger for pocket pc 2002 ( it was via a thread at this board ) which after installation on my phone showed the MSN icon but didn't do anything. There was some update file which I needed as well to make it work but microsoft had deleted it. I'm just looking for messenger the same as it is on my pc, with standard smileys, etc, not one of those messenger clones. Thanks.

Thanks man. Unfortunately, after it goes through the process of trying to install the .CAB file on my phone, it says installation unsuccessful. Not sure why tbh. On their error screen, they say it could be insufficient memory, device may not support it, or that my carrier (T-Mobile) may not allow it. As it installs, it doesn't give me an option to install to either the device or my storage card. Any suggestions?

Excellent, I got it working! I tried out duttythroy's 1.80mb cab file and it worked. Well actually, it said successful install but there was nothing to find of the program anywhere on my device except in remove programs. So I decided to look in my device/windows folder, and all the WLM files were in there. I clicked on the WLMMessenger.exe and it went through the set up process, merging contacts and signing me in. Thank you JamminJaguar and duttythroy.
No problem, now buy my Nike.

Heh
Actually, I ended up installing this, uninstalling it and reinstalling it, because I did something wrong with the setup. On the first install, messenger, windows live services and and search bar all showed up on my phones desktop which was great. This time, it's not showing at all for some reason. Maybe because on the second install I decided to untick the search bar and services? So I've copied the WLMMessenger.exe from the windows folder and pasted it into my device/program files folder and that works.

im not and idiot or a noob, im tyring to post legitimate feedback on an android rom i am currently using but i need 10 posts so here is one more, thanks for this stupid rule! 8
I have been using Droid ROMS, MODS and kernels since the G1.
I downloaded some apps from the Marketplace. I usually get the cabs online and just install all my programs to the storage card and leave the main storage open. But with Marketplace it seems to install them directly onto the device. Is there a way to change that? To make the Marketplace programs install onto the storage card instead? Apparently...all these apps I've installed have caused the memory to get low. It says I have 13MB available and the phone is running slower than usual. Is there a way to safely move these program files over to the storage card or am I just gonna have to remove them and see if I can't find the cabs online?
Or does anybody know a way to open up more storage/memory ...temporary files, files I don't need that came with the Tilt 2. (Note: I already use ClearTemp and CleanRam)

There is a Thread on this forum on how to remove some of the ATT Bloat. I was able to free up a bunch of memory 10-20MB.

Or you could also Flash a new ROM.. With a TON of stuff installed, I have 209MB Free Storage
I had Good Results with one called e2 ROM - Also Adds the Weather to the TF3D Home Screen

You can move the programs to the storage card with SKTools, or re-install them from cabs. I guess Marketplace forces it to Memory.
You might also check your PIE/Opera cache, it can get rather large.
Thanks so much for the advice. Where can I find the PIE/Opera Cache at? What's the path?

I clear in MemMaid or SKTools myself, but you can do it via the programs themselves.
pie: path: \windows\profiles\guest
Or launch, Menu, Options, Browsing History, Temporary Files highlighted, Clear (soft key)
Opera: path: \windows\opera9\cache
Or again launch Opera, Settings, Privacy, Delete Cache.
You can now specify in Marketplace in options to download to storage card
...without accesing phone`s market. i want to download .apk to use later, or another day, or for another phone who has no internet connection. i found .apk apps on torrents but i want to download specific apps and store them on my computer. my data plan is very limited and i prefer to spent it for something else.
there is a site that you can buy them and store them in pc.i dont know if i allowed to tell who site is.is legal site that have and for other platforms programms to sell.if a mod say ok i can give a link.
you can send me a pm, that is ok for the forum. if its what i look for i will tell you, but i need free apps, not payied ones.
or, can i repack the apps i have instaled to my phone, to use them another time, to install them from scratch?
Use estrongs filemanager to backup your apps as .apk's
Its realy great
thank you very much.
I'm not sure if this is possible as ICS has no built in file manager, but is there anywhere I can put an apk file that it would be accessible without one? Specifically I want to be able to open an apk to install a file manager as the first thing I do after flashing a rom, to avoid needing to go through the market.
I thought maybe I could leave it in sdcard/download but it seems like the downloads program is blind to anything in that folder that wasn't officially "downloaded". (I suppose I could upload one to my dropbox and download it via the browser, if there are no viable options). Also made a few stabs at getting the gallery program to show one but it seems to filter out anything that's not a picture or video.
Any ideas for places to stick an apk and get one of the stock programs to let me open it?
maybe email it to yourself?
but you would have to log into the email app to do that
but there isnt really anyway to access the file without a file explorer
Open your favourite rom zip, add your apk to /system/app, save the zip, push that zip to the phone, flash.

Yeah in general I'm trying to cut out the step of signing into anything and just restoring my apps from a backup before I need to cancel automatic restore functions (which I do want on and running once I do my own initial run of things).

I'm guessing this comes with the consequence of raising any apk added in this manner to system app level? Not that I distrust the apps I'd have in mind for this to do anything malicious themselves, but is there any danger of opening security holes by elevating apps not designed to be system apps?
What I've done many times is just enabling Air Plane as soon as I can after flashing a ROM. That's way I can install any apk I want.
Hope it helps.

Hmm but then what is your method for getting to that apk? If you do it over wifi that seems to defeat the point, no?
Personally I've found that it works just fine to uncheck the boxes for recovery syncing during the setup process, and then just re-enabling them later in settings. (Alternately, not signing into my google account at all until I've performed a backup). That way even if I end up signing into the market to download a recovery app, it doesn't automatically try to re-download everything else on its own.
I'm starting to think that my dropbox solution will be the cleanest, as it'll be a simple step of opening the browser and downloading a single apk every time at the same link.
I bet that the inclusion of a basic file explorer will be one of those headline items in a future android release. A nice basic functionality that the bloggers can rehash to death before anything actually hits.
Download the file manager apk over wifi and install the APK via download manager.
I do it all the time with Chinese android tablets with no market access.
Or Bluetooth it from another device.
Or just use the market
LTE EX Galaxy Nexus - 4.0.3 AOSP
Asus Transformer - Revolver OC/UV

Transfer by USB from my laptop.
Is there a way to do that in which the device will launch the apk you move over? When I copy files over usb, it only ever puts them into whatever directory, and I need a file explorer to interact with them on the phone. And then I'm back to square one, as far as this particular task is concerned (once things are up and running I just use the LAN option in ES file explorer and it's as convenient as could be).
you have the apk in your computer right?
connect the phone to pc, and use adb to install
'adb install <apk_file_name.apk>'
Ah. I haven't used adb since I first unlocked/rooted a few months ago. Guess it probably pays to be a little familiar with those tools; they don't even occur to me when problem solving these days.

mark thread as solved then, if that solved it
Well a completely in-phone solution would still be nice, but I guess if there were any of those they'd have come up by now.
I'll probably use abd if I'm actively working at my computer and a dropbox download otherwise.
