Hello,
I really don't understand this radio stuff and googling didn't help much.. I didn't know whether this was the best forum for the question but it seemed like the most appropriate...
I had some questions (a couple academic and one practical):
1) What exactly is the radio (is it like a FM radio receiver and sender, but for the phone)?
2) Does changing the radio essentially change the frequency it tries to talk to the cell towers?
3) I'm on t-mobile uk what radio should I be using - http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Rhodium/Shipped_Roms doesn't list t-mobile uk.
4) Is there essentially a best radio for each country/network combination?
Thanks a lot in advance,
Chris
The different radios are simply updates to the drivers that operate the cell, gps, wifi, bluetooth, etc.
The frequencies stay the same.
The latest radio ending in .91(my sig) or the latest Tmo radio .88 should suit your needs.
I am on Tmo in the US so I know what works good for me, may be different for UK
Usually the chef of your favorite ROM will have a recommended radio in description.
You could always try one for a couple days and see which one gives best reception and battery life between .88 an .91
Hope that helps
Thanks I'm giving 88 a go. Get more reception bars but internet seems super slow. It feels strange that there are different drivers for different networks.

I recently got an imate PDA2k from my dad...and I absolutely love this thing! It came unlocked and after doing a lot of reading on here, I found out that the ROM was an older version......so I upgraded to the latest one available from clubimate's site.....v1.40 with the 1.12 radio ROM.
Although it seems to be working better today, initially I had a lot of problems with the phone side of the BA....not enough signal bars in places where I usually used to get decent strength....and in my old Nokia 6600, we could use the GPRS from Tmobile to surf on WAP sites. Sorry if this sounds dumb but can I not do that with the BA using the Tzones? or do I HAVE to have the internet plan to be able to even go to the WAP sites? The other problem is that my GPRS never connects...only very very infrequently, and even then, like mentioned earlier, I can't do any surfing.....
I also am desperately looking for any operator specific settings for Tmobile USA which might help the BA work more efficiently.
Lastly, will upgrading my Radio ROM to the 1.13 version help improve my signal strength/reception?
Appreciate any help/suggestions.

Not sure about the signal strength, but it improves the call quality
Hi, What is the best Radio ROM for my Vario II which curently has
Pro black 2.5
SPL 2.10 opli v7
Radio ROM 1.40
I use T-Mobile UK.
I don't think the signal quality is very good on 1.40 as I was on the phone and my wife said her voice was echoing...? I was using my bluetooth headset...but it never happened before the upgrade..? Before 1.40 I had 1.41 and I couldn't even connect to the network
Also, why does the start bar sometimes hide....? and how can I add a running programs shortcut on the bottom like I had on WM5..I can't seem to do it....?
Sorry for sounding like a newbie..I've looked in the WIKI but can't find it
I had some problems with 1.40, ranging from no radio at all to bricking the device.
What did you settle on in the end? I'm also on T-Mobile UK.

I'm still on the 1.40 and it works ok actually but I think it could be better.
I have had no problems so far with 1.40 radio and lvsw 23/4.
Hi,
I was using 1.40.30.00 and found it to be a great improvement over the other radio's
I mainly use my phone in West London and Central London.
I have now moved to 1.41.00.10 and will test it performance over the next few days.
Thanks
Msuk
Hi,
Radio 1.40.30.00 caused my battery to drain very fast. Since updating to version 1.41.00.10 I have had no problems.
I tried 1.41 but found it to be a bit less stable than 1.40 which I have gone back to. That seems to be about the best in my experience but they all have an issue with dropping calls/being unable to make receive calls if the phone is having problems switching back and forth between GSM/3G.
I found 1.40 my signal strength was very weak, compared to previous version i'd used, especially 1.38.
But i have just installed 1.41 and it seems better again, i'm going to stick with this for a while and see how i get on.
ps. i'm not sure the WM6 forum is the best place to be discussing radios
Thats wierd. I have the same setup as some of you guys and when I put 1.41 in my network didn't come at all. I don't really want to try it again. But i'm thinking if I should
I am using 1.38.30.1 - it feels much better than 1.40.. in terms of battery life and reception is stronger than my experience with all the other radios tried. Speed seems fine, HSDPA works fine. However I stay mostly on GSM to save battery due to poor reception at home and switch to 3G/ HSDPA only when really needed.
T-Mobile UK and 3G problems
Guys, please note that if you have problems with 3G coverage - for example missed calls or problems with making calls - it is probably network's fault, not necessarily Radio ROM. I was experiencing such problems while using original T-Mobile's WM5 ROM. People couldn't reach me while I've had full 3G coverage in Central London, and I also couldn't place any call at all. Switching manually to GSM-only mode solved all problems. I've complained to CS about that, they admitted to have some 3G issues, and gave £25 discount of my bill. Also, friend of mine having Nokia N70 also reported similar problems with 3G, he switched to GSM-only and is far more happy now.
Anyway, I was using 1.38 Radio for about 2 weeks with no problems whatsoever. Since yesterday I have 1.41 - so far, so good.
I agree. Switching manually to GSM used to solve the problem. In some areas it looked like GSM and 3G were changing every 2 seconds. But I do need 3G for fast browsing.
It may be network problems but you'd expect a radio to be able to switch seamlessly without impact the voice service though wouldn't you.
I'm on radio 1.47 with black satin on tmob UK.
My mobile phone is useless when i speak to people all i can hear is a lot of crackle interspersed with words! I think they can here me.
Where can i find a radio to downgrade to and which is best for tmob uk?

No joy...
I have tried Black Satin on my phone and had no reception problems.
I have just tried my current set up (see sig.) using my T-Mob sim...I did not have any problems with reception.
There is the 1.48 radio from the AT&T rom listed in WIKI perhaps that will help.

bb,
I am on T-Mobile UK with the radio version 1.47 and have no problems at all. I am not sure that there was any advantage with the move to this radio from 1.43 and I have seen others indicate that 1.43 was a radio optimised for the UK so it might be worth changing to that.
All the radios are on this site here: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_ExtractedRadioRoms. You will also find links to the posts related to them so it may be worth a read. However, given your problem (which seems strange from what I have read and seen myself) I'd recommend checking you have HardSPL first then giving 1.43 a go. The highest numbers are certainly not always the best for everyone.
Good luck
t-mobile UK radio Problem
Try using radio 1.48, Im on t-mobile UK and using Schaps lastest 3.57a ROM with radio 1.48 its brilliant, no problems what so ever.

So many of use are in doubt about the best radio - now if only we had a tool that monitored actual radio performance over a day or week of normal activity that could provide some form of objective assessment of performance of one radio and circumstances against another.
I find that for every 10 people in favour of a particular radio there are likely to be 10 more that think it is poor. Clearly locality (country/band/Edge/GPRS and 3G/HSDPA are all factors but? Can anyone create a capability to record forum user input for any given radio that also took account of location and provider - then we might more clearly see trends.
It is all too easy to be tempted by the latest radio and sometimes our assessments might well be clouded by anticipation rather than reality. I find that the apparent performance of the T-Mobile network is variable for even a given static location - that makes it difficult to make a sound judgement.
Ho hum... Shall I go back to 1.43 or give 1.48 a try?
I tried using 1.4.7 with Black Majic but it just didn't work that well.. I could here the other person perfectly however they could not hear a word I said.. I've upgraded to 1.48 and Black Satin and the reception is perfect (best yet) on T-Mobile UK.. only problem now is the wifi.
I've got a wireless N network and the signal in the house is full strength when connected however I have to manually click connect everytime using the option in the network settings.. The network is only using Mac Filtering so not sure what the problem is. I''ve tried to indicate that it is a hidden network but without joy. Anybody have any ideas?
1.46 is good for me (batt life is good too)
1.47 had issues,
Would it be possible to give your locations were you are experiancing these radio issues or bad call qaulity iusses please

Hi
Also T-Mobile UK - i have had problems with all custom roms - seems fine for a while then data dies requiring a reboot.
This changed with the new dopod release and 1.47.10 radio, then the latest sleuth 3.1 dev rom which is faultless for me.
I think the problem varies dependant on where in the uk you are, the sort of coverage you get - for the record im in Durham.

I'm in Cardiff, but I had issues in all South Wales with custom roms. The only one that worked fine with me is Orange 1.38.00.01 (I didn't even feel the need to try 1.48)

agreed, but I'm still running an older radio and its working fine also. The Dopod rom is the nuts.

Hi All
Im on Tmob UK and live in the Southampton area. I get a good signal in the area and frankly all the ater radios I have tried work ok. My particular problem is in builbding coverage in that I work in a large communications centre and inside the signal is poor to non existant. This is where I find the difference shows in the roms and the best for me is 1.27. It is one of the few roms that seems to reliably deal with a loss of signal and then reattaching the data connection after a period with no signal. It also seems to have the best poor signal acquisition.
Ive tried them all and have always gone back to 1.27, no others have been better and most have been worse.
Rob
Did you think it was an improvement over 3.37.78 or not? Any better GPS locks?
Hello. I am running ROM 1.15.VZW & radio 3.42.30 & no GPS signal. I went thru the whole process of unlocking it but it looks like there is no luck. I still don't get any signal. I even waited outside in open air for 30min under the LA's heat but no signal. Maybe I did something wrong.
I'm running that newest radio and I haven't noticed much of a difference at all. Maybe some weird radio bugs were fixed, but nothing you'll see in day to day use. It's not really worth the trouble, IMO.
I am not sure how we can unlock the GPS on Verizon touch. I went thru all the steps of unlocking and still there is no signal. Any body out there that have tried this to see if it really unlockes the GPS or not?

This personally worked for me on my Verizon XV6900: LINKY
The attached cabs in that post are both GPS registries, not to be confused with the carrier cabs. Pick from the two, I recommend the Telus. Also I said V13 in the post, but obviously you should flash the latest ROM when you finish flashing everything else.
There was a thread on this very same issue a little while back, the consensus was there was virtually no difference between the two, despite the larger number the 3.42 radio was in no way really 'superior.' In fact, some people reported better reception on 3.37. Having used both, I would agree they're indistinguishable.
i get 6-8 locks in google maps within a minute and im using 3.42.30
I'm on Sprint... And I use to use 3.42.50 and my signal was not really good. So I recently switched to 3.37 and my signal is great... I have a question, is it not smart to use a Verizon radio on sprint..?
I used .50 bell for many months. Switched back to VZ radio a few weeks ago. A very slight increase in reception. I can go about 3 feet further in my house and still talk than I could with the bell radio. No real diff though.
Hello !I live in greece and i have problems with low signal !is it a radio problem?if it is the radio which one should i flash for use in vodafone greece?if it's not is there anything else that i can do to strenghen the signal?thanks in advance! (i currently use I747UCLEM)
No one will be able to give you a definitive answer here. The best recommendation we can make, if you're willing to flash a different radio to your device, is to try different ones and see which one works best for you. It could just be that you're in an area that isn't covered well by your carrier, in which case a new radio would not resolve the issue. Check your carrier's coverage map for more info.
the coverage is ok!in the past i had motorola atrix 4g,and htc sensation 4g and other smartphones like note but all of them had full signal!also the radio i use is not the stock one i flashed it and it is slightly better than the stock one!the question obviously was for someone who lives in europe and has tried all the radios!thanks
Regardless, this is the AT&T GS3 forum. This question may be better asked in the international section.
