Google Naigation query - Desire General

Lovin' everything about this phone at the moment but just a quick q' about the satnav element of google maps... On tomtom you can be set your current location as a favourite from the on screen menus, I haven't been able to find a way to do this on this google nav, is it possible?
sorry, can't find a way to edit the thread title - should read Google NaVigation query-

When you get google maps to find your current location, if you click on the 'pin' you should get a new screen with the details of that location etc. In the top right corner is a star, so you can 'star' that location as a favourite, like you do in Gmail, Reader etc.
AFAIK you can't set a Home location though

Indeed you can! Brilliant & thank you very much. I also just noticed the "labs" stuff with all the different buttons, I like this phone the more I get to know it.
Thanks for the quick help, appreciate it.

Anyone found a way of adding safety camera info/alerts to Google navigation?
The last touch to a great application!!

u can add a home, I presume u have your home phone number in it? Add your address to the home contact then use the navigate to contact, home and done

Missing Default Google Voice Search Icon?

I just received my mt3gs and thought I'd try it "as is" for a few days before rooting it. One thing that I've used heavily on every other Android phone (G1, Droid, EVO) is the voice search icon. That is missing on the mt3gs - is there any way to get it on there? I love being able to hit one icon, then say something like "navigate to starbucks". I tried that with the "Genius Button" and it just plain didn't work. The voice search icon is also missing from the search widget (though it shows up once you click on it to enter text.)
go into the widget menu. select widgets and select the 2nd search widget.
right now you have the HTC search.

Thanks, that solved half my problem! (I guess I didn't scroll down far enough to see the 2nd search widget.) I still like to have just the voice icon on my default home screen since that takes up less space - hopefully someone knows how to add that.
Well, I solved the problem by rooting and installing SlideM!!!

Couple of questions from an iPhone user

I got the desire recently and am very impressed with it, however cannot figure a couple of things
How do I add a map location to a contact? I can locate myself on the map but I don't know how to add that location to a contact.
Also, on the iPhone, I could tap on top of the screen to scroll back to the top. Can you do that with android?
Thanks

Hi I was in the same boat as you with the iPhone then jumped to the Desire. I'm not sure about the maps with contacts but in the browser if you press menu the address bar will show up at the top of your screen.
I am not sure you can add location info to a contact by an option in maps but contacts do link to maps if the address is entered in to the contact and they become navigable using google nav. Sorry if you already know this.
I think what you're describing is a feature of google latitude. Once you sign up for it, you can see the location of your friends who have latitude on your phone via google maps.

If what you want is information on the location of known persons at any time, this is a feature of Google Latitude, all you need to do is sign in and you get the position of all your known contacts (if they allow this).
If what you want is a way to navigate to the address of the contact, If you inform the address on the contact information Google Navigator will allow you to navigate to the destination.

I have not found any equivalent to this, all you can achieve is showing the nav var touching the menu buttton, but you can't scroll back to the top of the page with one single movement.
You can add businesses as contacts if they are visible on maps but if you want to add an address to a contact you will need to do that from the people app.

I thought you just had to add a postal address to their contact information. Once that's done it will give you an option to "View ... address".
Thanks for the responses. In Dubai, we have pretty bad adressing system and about the only way is to arrive at the destination and add it. That's what I used to do on the iPhone by dropping in a pin andc adding that to a contact

This might be what your looking for - the Google app 'places', not sure if its Rom specific or available via the market but its on my opendesire ROM.

[Q] How do I reenable Google Voice Search

Running JB 4.1.1. on ATT SG3 (SGHI747). Recently rooted.
Touching the microphone associated with Google Search used to allow me to speak and fill fields. Now, touching the icon brings me to the Play Store link to the Google Voice Search app page. I've already uninstalled and reinstalled the application, cleared all file associations, rebooted.
I'm a total noob. I'd appreciate any help.
Thanks.
J
Where is this microphone located? If it is a shortcut out on your main screens (desktop area who's name is escaping me currently) you might want to try going into the "Apps" drawer and opening google voice there. If that works then trash your broken shortcut and drag a new one out.

[Q] Adding a contact from a google maps search result

When I do a search in the maps app, say for a McDonalds near an airport, I get the results on the map. I select one of the results and tap the right side of the popup (the half that has the name) and at the top I get a star icon to add to my map locations, and a camera icon to take a photo to submit, but there is no stacked dot icon which apparently I'm supposed to use to add the search result to my contacts. If I tap the left side of the popup of course I get the Directions screen. If I go to the results list, and tap on the result in question, it just goes to the result information screen with the star and camera icons but no stacked dot icon.
How on earth do I add a search result in google maps android, to my contacts? If there's supposed to be a stacked dot icon for me to use to do this, how do I get it back?
I'm running stock ICS, rooted. The only google items I've frozen with titanium backup are:
gmail
google play books
google play movies
google+

Sense Home Widget Issues

Hello,
My Sense Home Widget is not working properly. Pinned items disappear. Also, how am I suppose to add new folders (and apps) to the widget? Every time I remove something some other app automatically gets placed in there. I figured a work around with apps by creating a folder with a current item and the new item then removing the one I don't want... but that is a stupid design. I suppose I could do the same thing and recreate all the folders, but you think it would be easier... why cant I just drag them from another home screen. Anyone else having these issues?

Sense Home is designed to automatically populate with the apps that you use most in the particular location you're in. If you want to use it, then just set your locations and use your phone as you normally would in each location and the widget will learn which apps you use where and populate the widget accordingly.
If you want total control, then just place shortcuts directly on your home screens, but you won't have the location-specific feature anymore.
I understand it is meant to auto populate, but that doesn't account for pinned items disappearing or the lack of an intuitive way for manually adding items to that widget.
