data roaming question - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi this question has been bugging me for some time
does android/desire have an option to suppress data traffic when in romaing ? i mean if i am in roaming no data connection is allowed for any application, if im in my home network all data is allowed ?
and is there also an option for mms ? i eman only retrieve mms if in home network ?

APNdroid can be set to only allow MMS downloads in the home network.

a question about GPRS connections

I have recenty been trialling a push email solution from Qore.
basically, I set up my email program (in my case outlook) to forward my emails to the T-Mobile email service. This service then sends me a text to indicate I have an email. The pusheffect program intercepts this text (there's no text indication etc) and then connects via GPRS to my T-mobile connection and downloads my email from my server.
works perfectly...EXCEPT, it doesn't close the GPRS connection afterwards.
so, my queston is how much (if any) data is transmitted while I'm connected via GPRS (little G with the two arrows) but not actually using it??
I don't want to find myself with a huge bill at the end of each month
Many thanks
According to GPRS data usage there should not be any data transmision if the connection is not used. No data - no traffic. If you want to be sure I would recomend GPRS Tweak (http://www.gb-soft.cz/XDAII/product_gprs_tweak_en.htm) soft that enables you to close the connection after predefined inactivity time. That should solve your problem.
perfect...that'll be the gadget to have then
many thanks
at least it would have been if it worked!!
set to close connection after 10 mins...left it for 20....still connected!!
looks like I'll just have to keep doing it manually
Sorry, I have been using it a short time only but been more interested in saving battery than the traffic. I'm on unlimited data tarrif so I keep the connection constantly (no major difference in power consumption).
Maybe the author has a solution?
P.S.
Did you try with the device switched off ?
The option implies that it's more the device that needs to be inactive than the connection.

Question regarding disabling Data connection GPRS (TP2) T-Mobile

I recently received a T-Mobile Touch Pro 2 cell. I'm NOT paying for web service and would like to only use Wi-Fi. If I disable my data connection under the communication manager, would this mean that I will not be using T-Mobiles web service and only my Wi-Fi? Can I still receive calls/text messages when the data connection is set to off? Do I have to worry about the data connection setting automatically turning on by itself for whatever reason?

Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
Flipping that switch manually turns off your phone's 3G connection, and you can still make/receive calls/sms. However, as soon as some app or process needs a data link (ones that don't/won't use the wifi connection), it will flip that connection right back on.

Which apps do I have to worry about flipping the connection on? I only plan on surfing the web and I don't plan on setting up my e-mail account. I only want to text and browse the web using my TP2. Thanks for the response.

Well Google Maps for one, it insists on downloading through your 3G data connection even if you're connected to wifi. There may be others that will ignore a wifi connection and fall back on 3G, I don't know off the top of my head, you can dig around here some to see if there's any reference to that (I know I've seen it, just don't have it bookmarked)
Yes, some apps are automatically enabling the data connection.
My solution:
go to Settings > Connections >
and delete the 'data connection' for your provider.
Their you could also go to advanced and choose which networks will be used for what type of connection; play with it.
The data connection isn't used for 'calls', only if you are calling over IP (skype e.g.)
With a program like SPB wireless monitor, you can see which connection has used how many bandwidth.

How do I go about deleting the data connection from my provider? I'm lost!
There is an easier way. Use the Modoco NoData cab and it turns off the data connection until you turn it back on. This way if you decide that you want to use the data later you dont have to find out and enter your settings again.
It works very well.
For those who want to restrict the data to thier home carrier ie: no roaming the Dynamic+ NoDataInRoaming is ideal as it automatically switches on and off when you enter and leave your home area.

Wifi use for email and Opera

Firstly I apologise if this has been answered already but I've tried searching and couldn't find an answer.
My email and internet works perfectly over a 3G connection but I spend a lot of my time travelling and so as not to incur high roaming charges I would like to be able to use a wifi connection for my email and internet. The problem is that even when I have a wifi connection both of these applications still try to use the 3G signal.
I expect I am probably missing something quite basic but I can't seem to work out how to make these applications use the wifi connection instead of 3G.
If someone could explain this to me I would be very grateful. If you can provide an idiots guide of step by step instructions that would be even better.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Matt
For email go into the account settings for each email account and under advanced server settings change the connection. on AT&T it defaults to Media Net. Change this to The Internet and this will allow it to use wifi if it is on.
I always set my Wi-Fi connections to connect to my Work network, and leave AT&T as The Internet. Then in the Connections settings, I switch the preferred networks for applications to access the internet between Work and The Internet depending on what I want to force the phone to use. Works for ALL applications that access the internet, not just email. For a long time I didn't even have an AT&T data plan, and that's how I forced my phone to use Wi-fi.

Thanks for the hint. But how can I change the preferred connection (e.g. wifi) using my hotmail-account for email? I can't find in the account-settings.
Any ideas are welcome!!!

Arc s pxts trouble

Hey guys, I'm on 2Degrees(which goes through Vodafone i think) in New Zealand, and I'm not on a data plan, just prepay.
I can't seem to send pxt's unless I enable 'data roaming' and 'mobile networks', which if I'm correct uses data and eats my prepay time.
I just get a 'Could not send. Message will be sent when service becomes available' error
My mate has the exact same setup with his sensation, and can send/receive pxt's without enabling any mobile networks or data roaming, when he sends or receive a pxt, his '3g' symbol pops up and the pxt sends.
So my question is, is there something I need to do to be able to send and receive pxt's without having to use mobile data and eating into my prepay money, because I know this is possible, just not sure why it's not working on this phone.
I've attached some pics of my apn settings, from what I can tell they are all correct...
Thanks for your help!

Did some research on Google...
PXT requires MMS to be used, MMS requires 3G internet in order to send the stuff. All the photos/audio files and stuff can only be sent over Internet. There is no other way.
You need to have MMS settings in your phone. Data roaming is not required at all. MMS downloading will not eat your money for data, as MMS settings are used for it. MMS settings don't allow you to surf on the internet, these settings are only for sending and receiving MMS.

That makes sense to a degree,
So i need internet access to be able to send MMS?, which means I need to enable mobile networks and data roaming(since I'm not on a data plan I have to enable these or I can't get internet access, therefore no MMS).
But what your saying is even though I enable internet access, the MMS side of it doesn't actually eat into the data, since it's sent a different way, visa vie, it doesn't eat my pre paid moneys...
I just wonder if there is a way to only get data turned on when it's needed for MMS, other wise all my apps are constantly updating and eating my credit...

MMS will use the data itself when it is needed. Mobile networks doesn't have to be turned on, it is only needed if you want to surf on the internet.. Data Roaming is only used if you want to use your phone's internet in another country(which is f**king expensive).
I received an MMS on my Arc S once, I didn't have internet settings on my phone, just MMS settings(APN stuff). I got an SMS, then used the download option. Data was turned on automatically, MMS was downloaded and data was turned off again. No charges for me.

Thanks
That all makes total sense, my only problem is, I can't send or receive pxts unless i enable both mobile networks and data roaming, I've literally tested it in all ways i can, and it wont work unless they are both enabled.

Mobile data connected yet most apps say no data connection

Okay ...so every time I install a custom ROM I get this bug ... I am using a jio 4g sim ...when I turn on mobile data ...the speed meter tells the speed correctly.. But still the network icon says data not connected (sim network with an exclamation or cross symbol) . Some of the are able to receive the data ..like Instagram ..even WhatsApp can send and recieve text msgs (but can't download audio/video mags) ! When I use a VPN/tunnel app to route the data connection of the phone ...all apps work totally fine !
PS : all apns, mobile networks and network types are adjusted correctly
Are you absolutely sure the APN is correct? Because that sounds exactly like an incorrect APN setting
