How to get started? - Desire General

Ok so my Desire arrives tomorrow.. FINALLY
Its from Carphone Warehouse on o2 so should be completely unbranded and unlocked.
Im an Android noob and I dont really know where to start.
What is the first thing I should install/set-up after the phone is fully charged? What apps are must have? What's the best file manager, etc.?
Thank you!!

First of all congratulations, I have had this phone for just over a week now and I just love it more and more. There is so much I can say.
First of all I would recommend downloading BatteryTime Lite as it puts in a battery percentage on your notification bar - not very exciting but useful
Google sky map is so cool to show off, point it at the moon and see how it gets displayed on the phone
Check out the street view on Google Maps, click on Menu and enable compass mode so that you can look around simply by moving your phone
One thing I DEFINITELY suggest is the Voice Search, look it up in the General thread under HTC IME KEYBOARD, it's basically the Nexus keyboard on the Desire. The speech to text works a wonder it's just so productive and useful and the voice search is amazing (just hold down the search button) and it'll do anything you tell it to!
Just a little something to get you started

Read up on how to get it rooted and you can do alot more with it

Well wouldn't go as far to say a lot, but you can do a few more things (app2sd, themes, new roms) with it, and possibly 1 less thing being claim warranty repairs easily.....Although I would wait a bit to see if htc are nice enough to offer an update to 2.2 shortly after it comes out before i go rooting my desire..

Waheyyyyy Thanks guys! Its just arrived
Quick question: When i plug it in to charge the phone automatically turns on. Is it best to turn it off and let the phone charge while it's off, or can I leave it on and let it charge while I play around?
Excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh and another Q: While the phone is turned off, I presume the orange LED means its charging?

I'd leave it off, personally...and yes, orange means charging, green is complete

Oops..

i posted the begining of my problem somewhere on monday but cant remember where. so.....
on monday, the screen on my tmobile dash messed up, now the top half of the screen has white horizontal lines covering it.
well, i called tmobile and the phone was still under warrenty, so got a like new phone sent and it arived today. I went about unlocking it and upgrading to wm6.1 like i had on my last phone. started out with all sorts of problems sycning and i had to reinstall active sync and that seemed to fix it. continued installing the upgrade, the dos program runs i press the center button and i get the red blue green screen and i know from before that that normally means it isn't working, so i reboot the phone, re sync, and re do it and get the red green blue screen again and the update program says it can recover and it leads me through a four step process, upplug, pull bat, reboot and do it again, only it reboots into the red green blue screen, wouldnt sync and when i turned it off, i couldnt get it to power back up. no response from the phone at all. pulled battery many times and all.
What are my options? I know that i agreed to the statment and i have no one to blame but my self. is there anything i can do? i have 7 days to return the half working phone, and i have a feeling that because its unlocked and has wm6.1 on it that tmobile is going to charge me what ever it will be. I have 200.00 in credit with um, and i feel that those fees will take away from that, leave me with an un usable phone, and no money to do anything about it !
a brainstorm, could i just tell tmobile that i got the phone that way? or would they see through my lies?
please please please please help!!!
and thanks a ton in advance.

Okay do this, make sure the phone is off and hold the camera button down for about 5 seconds... this button is located to the right of the keyboard. While still holding it down plug in the phone to the usb and now you should see a tri-colored screen come up. Now you can load the original rom the phone came with... The official roms could be found in the link below... called "official roms" and just download the t-mobile rom... and now you can flash your phone with the original rom...

Ok, I had found a forum post saying to hold down the SYM button, but couldn't get it working untill I read your reply. Much thanks, the phone is on, and giving me the red green blue screen. I hear the windows alert saying a USB device is plugged in, but active sync wont pick it up. So I'll post about it here, and while I dig through the internet trying to find my cure, I will hope that someone will know what my next step is.
Much much thanks jdoggraz! At least now I know my phone isn't completely dead!
Nick
jdoggraz already told you what to do. YUou do not have to wait for active sync to pick the phone. Just run the exe for the orginal rom.
I have tried to do a hard reset.
Hold the 2 softkeys down(the "-" on each end) for a few seconds, hot the power button down for 2 seconds and then hold the 2 softkeys down and wiat, but nothing happens. Donno why, but may be not being able to hard reset is a clue to whats wrong.
[EDIT]
I have found something about a program called Mtty.exe, and also a UNI_ExitBootLoader But I get a "un able to connect to usb" error with both programs when I try to connect. But, once again, every time I plug the phone into the computer I hear the alert saying a usb device has been attached??
[Another Edit]
I just noticed in Device Manager, under Window CE USB Devices, that my Smartphone USB Sycn Has that nasty Yellow explanation mark next to it.
This device cannot start. (Code 10)
Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

Sorry guys, I guess I wasn't getting a refreshed look at the forum post, and I didn't see any other posts. I went back to what I was told to do in the first place.
I first tried
1.33.422.1 (Worldwide English, WM6)
1.27.405.1 (Worldwide English, WM6)
With both I get:
ERROR [224] : INVALID MODEL ID
This update utility cannot be used for your smartphone. Please check your Update Utility.
And in the lower right there is a string of characters that is different every time.
What am I doing wrong? I'm so frustrated. I followed your instructions =(
[EDIT] OMG I am an idiot, ignore this post. If I wasn't so beat I might have scrolled down and noticed the tmobile DASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

An update.
I have gotten wm5 installed and working on my phone. I can't for the life of me get the 6.1 update to work. I get the agreement, press the center button and it goes back to the OS, the phone then locks up, and I have to restart it to re sycn.
This is very time consuming! The phone takes for ever to start. I also want to note that I upgraded my last dash with little problems, but this dash has been nothing but a head ache. WHY?!?!? I am not looking forward to being stuck with this phone.
Thanks everyone, for all the help. I went a little off course last night, I was falling asleep trying to get this thing working.

Moved to Themes, Applications and Software forum.
Im guessing by screensaver you mean screen turns off/dims?
Which ROM are you using and what screensaver app are you running?

yes i mean the dim/ blank screen
not sure about the rom but the phone is box standard no other apps have been put on it apart from this work application
screen is normally on, dims after few seconds manbe 1 minute, then goes blank (or like a sleep mode) however this sleep mode is where the problems start
thanks guys any help will be appreciated.

anyone got any update on this? i believe tomtom stops working also when this screen saver kicks in please help me out
as it is draining my battery life
How do your messages come through? Are they via sms? If so you can use an app called HD Tweak to wake device on new message. As for TT, perhaos invest in a car charger and then you don't have to worry about the battery.

I know this is not much of a solution but if you go to settings tab -- all settings (bottom left corner) and then in the middle tab (cant remember the name) --- power.
in here, go to the 3rd (last tab) and there you can disable the screen dimming and and sleep mode (first 2 options) by unchecking them
I am also using TomTom in the car at the moment and yes it does drain the battery...i think that asides from getting a car charger (they're cheap - just look for a in-car USB charger and use your USB cable), the best alternative is to let the screen dim, but NOT switch off. So let your screen turn off its backlight, and that should extend your battery life considerably.
Also, maybe try some of the solutions listed in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=483034
(i got that from a forum-wide search)
Good luck
ok guys bit more info
not worried about tomtom working whilst screen off that was just a example i gave, however my chaeffer work software does not ring/alert me when the screen is locked
now the software works via gprs and log's into my office server when they get the booking it gets logged into there system and routinly passed down to the drivers
i have a car charger but the problem is i am not in the car all the time, or near a mains supply only go to the car when booking come through
now is this a programming issue by the company i work for? if so, what could be done to correct this?
i am looking at some after market apps play around with them and see how i get on.
thanks you for all your help so far

Really slow turn on/off

Hi I'm new to this forum but I've already found the threads really useful. One problem with my Desire which I cannot find is this, however; it takes around a minute to turn on and two to turn off. It's not that big a problem, I just find it irritating. Does anyone have a similar one or have any advice please? It's T-Mobile locked. Thanks in advance.
i havent measured mine but it takes probably about a minute to turn on specially with the tmobile logo and the pink circle loading, but it turns of in about 10 seconds
so i dont know really, maybe its faulty ?
Thanks for the reply the turn on sounds the same I'm a bit worried about the turn off.

ok just done a quick test, and ye it turns off in about 10 seconds
turns on in about 50s, takes about 25 to go to the white htc screen then its the tmobile intro for bout 10-15 and then it goes to the main locked screen
Well from my experience the more apps you have open, the longer it takes to turn off. Not surprising really, just think of your computer does the same thing. I just use the task killer and then turn it off, it only takes a matter of seconds then.
As far as turning it on, well can't really do anything about that, just be patient!

Yeah mine takes about 5 seconds to turn off. Don't have too many widgets and apps installed though
No, I use advanced task killer to keep on top of running apps, keeping them to a minimum and it still takes two mins to turn off.
isnt the task killer bad for the system ?
yeah, as far as I know its better to let android close them and don't kill them.
Android is known for longer boot time. Although the desire is already much faster at boot than the Hero. We are talking about full boots are we? Not something you would usually do a lot, or at least it should not be the main thing on a phone
Two minute shutdown is very long through, could also be some app you installed who knows.

in fact, that could be the reason! when you use task killer in android, android will try to reassign this memory, which obviously takes more time and power compared to when you dont kill them.
here read this about how Android manages the memory, and how task killer might do you bad more than good
http://geekfor.me/faq/you-shouldnt-be-using-a-task-killer-with-android/
just try the following, uninstall task killer and see how it goes.
good luck
Will try thanks for the advice coming from an iPhone I'm used to having to kill running apps for the memory. Will try it.
Update: Sadly, it is still as slow as ever, and the last four power offs (which I timed) have all taken over six minutes.
Help!

Hi,
You seem to know what you are talking about after reading a few of your posts and I know you will be helpful.
So basically If I use the task killer to kill stuff like my music and games is that bad as well??
Thanks
Yes, what the article basically says is that Android is designed to deal with processes itself, so you shouldn't use a task manager to kill them yourself. Does anyone have any ideas to help my problem please?

take it back to a shop ) 6min is really long!!
Yeh sadly I think I'm going to have to do that.
I've got an issue with mine. If I go to switch it off, it just hangs with the little window in the middle saying Power Off and then the little spinning thing and Shutting Down.
To switch off I have to take the back off and pull the battery out. I've left it 15 minutes each time and it still does the same and hangs
Any thoughts?
Mine took about 10 mins to turn off yesterday. I was thinking maybe it tries to update the contacts, etc? I was out at the time and I was using a gsm data connection. I wouldn't be worried about it though. Definitely not taking it back...
I don't want to take it back, I just think it's not normal so i should take it back, I'm gonna today.

It is definitely not a problem with the phone but with the software.
It can be the Android OS, or the HTC Sense UI, or some App, that you used and took a long time to close...
Try Turning it OFF, then ON. And the Turn OFF again, and see how long it takes. It will only be about 30sec.
How about doing it the Windows Mobile way? Just take out the battery and reinsert -> instant shutdown.
I don't see why anyone would return a smartphone for long shutdown times though. You're not supposed to turn the phone off!

Tilt 2 partially dead after succesful stock ROM update

Ok, I was having some software issues with my Tilt 2 (TP2) and I talked to Tech @ AT&T, cause I wanted to get it exchanged. So they had me go and check to see if my ROM was outdated, which it was. I bileive it was on 1.59-ish, and now its on the most current one direct from HTC's Support site. My main problem right now is that the phone is 99% unuseable at the moment. AT&T has already agreed to send a replacement after talking with them a few hours ago, but its going to take about a week to get here, and it'll most likely have the same ROM and the same problems, so here I am posting to let people know whats going on, and see if anyone else knows what causes this/has this issue.
Right now the phone is completely stock, only installed app is MS My Phone so I could sync my contacts. I can let the phone sit till the screen shuts off from idle, but if I need to turn on the screen once it turns off, it requires the battery to be taken out. Right now my phone is sitting in front of my keyboard, with its screen black and off, while the keyboard is lit up. Something to note - the keys on the bottom of the screen are NOT lit up. Pushing buttons on the keyboard does nothing. Caps Lock and FN do NOT light up their coresponding indicator lights. If I am lucky, I can get the phone to come out of this state by having someone call me, but aside from that, taking out the battery has been the only way to reset it. Only way to keep the screen from freezing is to constantly use the phone. Using the phone is slow as balls. I thought TF3D was slow, Sense is just as bad. It worked perfectly fine at first, right after it was updated, it was nice and fast, but now that its been used for a few hours, its sluggish.
Anyone ever had this issue with this ROM?
And does anyone know how to possibly fix this issue, or at least get it so the screen will show that its on? I can deal with it being slow, so long as I can use the screen
Thanks guys

You already ruled out a software issue by flashing another stock ROM. This is something hardware related. Sense on the AT&T ROM is dreadfully slow. Use a custom ROM if you want the features of Sense, but in a faster iteration.

[Q] Trouble with power

Hi, first of all thanks for taking the time to read this.
I have a problem with my artemis p3300, it´s not concerned with any rom since it does it with the original ROM too.
So the thing is.
when it enters stand by mode, if i have ANY multimedia player, ie. media player, S2p or any other open, it didn´t have to be playing, only open in bg, i can´t enable the phone again, i have to keep with the button pressed until the message if i want to turn my phone off appears, or else it turns of again.
i searched everywhere if anyone else is having this specific problem, but i can´t find the right words to describe it in a search engine
anyway, thanks for the time you took to read the thread and please if you have any info regarding my problem i would appreciate it.
Thanks

This must be a really rare thing since 117 views and not just one knows anything about it
its a common battery issue
does this meen i win for answering? lol
1) you need to buy a new battery from ebay (or somewere simular)
2) keep device off after inserting new battery.
3) charge untill device shows green LED
4) turn device on
click the thanks button, you know you want to
thanks
i will try that and see how it goes
np dude,
BUT...
if i was you i would flash a new rom before you buy a new battery.
*if it still happens with the new rom, its definatly the battery.
i already tried a looooot of roms and all do the same, even original one´s..
thanks once again
cool, definatly the battery then dude..
make sure you dont turn the device on untill the battery is fully charged..
