Really slow turn on/off - Desire General

Hi I'm new to this forum but I've already found the threads really useful. One problem with my Desire which I cannot find is this, however; it takes around a minute to turn on and two to turn off. It's not that big a problem, I just find it irritating. Does anyone have a similar one or have any advice please? It's T-Mobile locked. Thanks in advance.

i havent measured mine but it takes probably about a minute to turn on specially with the tmobile logo and the pink circle loading, but it turns of in about 10 seconds
so i dont know really, maybe its faulty ?

Thanks for the reply the turn on sounds the same I'm a bit worried about the turn off.

ok just done a quick test, and ye it turns off in about 10 seconds
turns on in about 50s, takes about 25 to go to the white htc screen then its the tmobile intro for bout 10-15 and then it goes to the main locked screen

Well from my experience the more apps you have open, the longer it takes to turn off. Not surprising really, just think of your computer does the same thing. I just use the task killer and then turn it off, it only takes a matter of seconds then.
As far as turning it on, well can't really do anything about that, just be patient!

Yeah mine takes about 5 seconds to turn off. Don't have too many widgets and apps installed though

No, I use advanced task killer to keep on top of running apps, keeping them to a minimum and it still takes two mins to turn off.

isnt the task killer bad for the system ?

yeah, as far as I know its better to let android close them and don't kill them.
Android is known for longer boot time. Although the desire is already much faster at boot than the Hero. We are talking about full boots are we? Not something you would usually do a lot, or at least it should not be the main thing on a phone
Two minute shutdown is very long through, could also be some app you installed who knows.

in fact, that could be the reason! when you use task killer in android, android will try to reassign this memory, which obviously takes more time and power compared to when you dont kill them.
here read this about how Android manages the memory, and how task killer might do you bad more than good
http://geekfor.me/faq/you-shouldnt-be-using-a-task-killer-with-android/
just try the following, uninstall task killer and see how it goes.
good luck

Will try thanks for the advice coming from an iPhone I'm used to having to kill running apps for the memory. Will try it.
Update: Sadly, it is still as slow as ever, and the last four power offs (which I timed) have all taken over six minutes.
Help!

Hi,
You seem to know what you are talking about after reading a few of your posts and I know you will be helpful.
So basically If I use the task killer to kill stuff like my music and games is that bad as well??
Thanks

Yes, what the article basically says is that Android is designed to deal with processes itself, so you shouldn't use a task manager to kill them yourself. Does anyone have any ideas to help my problem please?

take it back to a shop ) 6min is really long!!

Yeh sadly I think I'm going to have to do that.

I've got an issue with mine. If I go to switch it off, it just hangs with the little window in the middle saying Power Off and then the little spinning thing and Shutting Down.
To switch off I have to take the back off and pull the battery out. I've left it 15 minutes each time and it still does the same and hangs
Any thoughts?

Mine took about 10 mins to turn off yesterday. I was thinking maybe it tries to update the contacts, etc? I was out at the time and I was using a gsm data connection. I wouldn't be worried about it though. Definitely not taking it back...

I don't want to take it back, I just think it's not normal so i should take it back, I'm gonna today.

It is definitely not a problem with the phone but with the software.
It can be the Android OS, or the HTC Sense UI, or some App, that you used and took a long time to close...
Try Turning it OFF, then ON. And the Turn OFF again, and see how long it takes. It will only be about 30sec.

How about doing it the Windows Mobile way? Just take out the battery and reinsert -> instant shutdown.
I don't see why anyone would return a smartphone for long shutdown times though. You're not supposed to turn the phone off!

htc desire screen problem

hello. i have bought a desire few days ago. yesterday i notice a problem. i have search the internet but havent find anything similar.
when i press the power button to turn of the screen after i press it again to turn on my screen sometimes the screen turns green and i cant do anything.
this thing doesnt happens all the time. but is preaty annoying and i have to remove the battery.
does anybody have an idea what is the problem
I think it's a hardware failure. Best way is to contact HTC Support.
i am not sure if ita hardware problem. because i notice that moso of the time that this happens is when i lock my screen when an application is open.

I don't think you'll find that's an unusual thing to do! I do it all the time, and have never experienced the problem.
As has already been mentioned, chances are it is a problem with you particular device - especially since you haven't had it for long. However, it could be an app causing the problem, so I'd suggest a factory reset in the first place and see how it performs in a more "vanilla" state.
If it behaves itself, start adding your apps back in again, and hopefully you'll find one causing the problem.
Regards,
Dave
i have already did a factory reset a nothing change. i thing the problem is with the lock screen after i press the power button.. i install no lock now on my phone that disable the lock screen and seems to work ok now.
one thing i forgot to mention is that the problem apear after i did a factory reset.
if this was a hardware problem shouldn't be happening all the time?
i just send an email to htc and inform them with my problem.

Turn it round the other way - if it was a software problem, it would be happening to everyone using the same ROM as you.

Dave
yes i know that. but since i disable the lock screen. the problem dissapear.
Today I took my phone to the shop I bought it and after half an hour of trying to show to the guy there what's was the problem. He gave me a replacement.

Hello everybody, i'm fresh new.
Also on my htc desire I have this problem, if you are able to use the device, without see the screen content, you can also shut down the phone. I say shut down because the problem disappear if you stop the phone (or leave the battery) for some minute. it's like all the meroy needs to be lost.
I had this problems some months ago, I unistalled one-by-one the apps, and it worked, now I have installed (during the last 5 months) other apps, and from 3days ago it restarted with this problem.

I am doing but I'm not sure it's the best solution.
I think it is related to some apps, some software problem, but I removed almost all my apps.
I noticed also that if I press the lock/unlock button for some secs, the problem there isn't. But it happen again (most of the time) when I put the device on charge, without turn it off, then when it finished it's a little bit hot and the display doesn't work.
I think it's a problem of the lock button, not software.
what is the name of this app?

I think is a problem related to the memory of the phone. Because I don't have new apps on my Desire.
If I move all my apps on the SD Card, it never (almost) happen...but if some Widget, on the phone, starts in background..
when I push the bottom at the top...the display doesn't switch on.

screen problem
Hi just wondered if anyone else has had this problem bought a desire a few days ago seemed to work fine but it has begun to act a little strange from time to time. from time to time the touch screen will not work just locks up, also the screen goes crazy flipping from one screen to the next, came with android 2.2 but upgraded it to android 2.3 from the HTC official site using HTC sync thought this may stop it, it does not happen as often now but still does it have to turn the phone off then back on again for it to work, anyone got any ideas on this and how I may cure it Thanks for your time.

Well I've been in a situation where an app has crashed and no buttons worked including power. I had to remove battery but I'm sure this would have worked. You may need it one day. So be grateful.
Unfortunately, this completely skips the "silent boot" app on relaunch.
Great tip
I still reboot my device once a day....WM bad habit
this is NOT a factory reset? just a reboot? is that correct? could the users having the "phone won't shut down" issue just use this instead to reboot cleanly?

It's not a factory reset or hard reset. The key combination just does a soft reset. Give it a try; it won't hurt.
thats great!!! thanks. I always have problem opwering down the phone to restart, so will try this instead. cheers.

when i first got my hands on the desire after installing and deinstalling apps I got the error about a lack of space available when trying to install apps even though i only had 3/4 apps installed, so i got rid of the task manager and now i just reboot the phone after installing or deinstalling apps or if i have been on youtube or doing a lot of browsing, it seem to keep the phone running smoothly and havn't seen the out of memory error
ive not looked in to this so it is just a presumption, the phone runs a clean up on shut down and this is the reason why the phone seems to hang when shutting down as it is deleting unused files, I noticed that when you shutdown (power off the phone) after heavy use it would always take a lot longer shut down the first time, if you then done a power down for a second time shut down was quite quick.
or maybe im talking s********
ive tried the key combo and it seems like a forced reset rather than a reboot? anyone care to comment?

I know what you're talking about. That's what I thought too (ie, the phone does a clean-up at shutdown). But then why doesn't this happen on the HTC Legend? I have both devices and the Legend has no issues shutting down regardless of up-time.
Anyway, I've noticed that rebooting the phone will often recover chunks of internal memory. Presumably it's just freeing some from some sort of cache. I've not noticed whether it behaves the same if I reset via the key combination versus shutdown-and-then-power on.
Thanks for the tip!
I'm glad I found this out, When my phone gets to baggy to access a app killer or even to get the power off menu I use this, So much faster than removing silicon case then back then battery and then having to stick it all back together

Tilt 2 partially dead after succesful stock ROM update

Ok, I was having some software issues with my Tilt 2 (TP2) and I talked to Tech @ AT&T, cause I wanted to get it exchanged. So they had me go and check to see if my ROM was outdated, which it was. I bileive it was on 1.59-ish, and now its on the most current one direct from HTC's Support site. My main problem right now is that the phone is 99% unuseable at the moment. AT&T has already agreed to send a replacement after talking with them a few hours ago, but its going to take about a week to get here, and it'll most likely have the same ROM and the same problems, so here I am posting to let people know whats going on, and see if anyone else knows what causes this/has this issue.
Right now the phone is completely stock, only installed app is MS My Phone so I could sync my contacts. I can let the phone sit till the screen shuts off from idle, but if I need to turn on the screen once it turns off, it requires the battery to be taken out. Right now my phone is sitting in front of my keyboard, with its screen black and off, while the keyboard is lit up. Something to note - the keys on the bottom of the screen are NOT lit up. Pushing buttons on the keyboard does nothing. Caps Lock and FN do NOT light up their coresponding indicator lights. If I am lucky, I can get the phone to come out of this state by having someone call me, but aside from that, taking out the battery has been the only way to reset it. Only way to keep the screen from freezing is to constantly use the phone. Using the phone is slow as balls. I thought TF3D was slow, Sense is just as bad. It worked perfectly fine at first, right after it was updated, it was nice and fast, but now that its been used for a few hours, its sluggish.
Anyone ever had this issue with this ROM?
And does anyone know how to possibly fix this issue, or at least get it so the screen will show that its on? I can deal with it being slow, so long as I can use the screen
Thanks guys

You already ruled out a software issue by flashing another stock ROM. This is something hardware related. Sense on the AT&T ROM is dreadfully slow. Use a custom ROM if you want the features of Sense, but in a faster iteration.

[Q] Screen wont turn on

I have the new Galaxy Note 2014 edition tablet, as does my son. My son came home today with his tablet and told me the screen no longer turns on. He said he was playing a game with a friend when the screen flickered and then went dark. Nothing seems to bring it back online.
Tried to press the power button and volume up button for a forced reboot. Most times does not but it did reboot once and stayed black.
Also tried pressing the power button down while pressing a finger on the screen, apparently a solution to sleep of death or something. I can't tell if that does anything - if anything it seems to turn it off or something because it has become unresponsive after doing that.
Any thoughts on what to do next?

I seem to be able to get it into two states right now, but neither is like it was - powered on and "working" but no screen. If I hold the power button for a while it seems ot go into a deep state of sleep or off, but I do not quite think it is off. If I hold it again for 30 seconds nothing happens at all. If I hold it again for 4 seconds, the back and menu soft keys will light up again. And then I can get them to light by hitting the home button or a quick touch of the power button.
Press and hold power in either state while holding volume up no longer seems to take me to a reboot - I no longer hear the power up music.
No idea what state it really is in or how to get it out of this.
ok - I think when it is able to light the buttons - it actually is still on. I just heard the vibration notification of an incoming alert (email, twitter or something).

Its a problem with your tablet. I know of a few other people in other threads who have also experienced this. My experience was different though because mine didn't turn on out of the box. I think there's a problem with Samsung's display connector. Your best bet is to just get it replaced at this point.

Yeah - it looks like that. I was hoping for a service option because my son has a lot of homework on it that would be nice to retrieve and of course he is bummed that he might lose all his game stats. I tried ot hook the device up to the pc to see if I could copy some files but although the device shows, its internal drives do not show up.
I really do not know what state the device is in right now. The soft buttons light up and if i pull the smart pen out it vibrates as it acknowledges it has been taken out, and I can hear the occasional vibration notification as an email, twitter update, or some other notification comes in. So - it "seems" like it is on. But I can not get it to do a forced boot and a few other things seem not quite right.
Anyway - Thanks for the help everyone!

That's strange that you can't see the drives when connected to the computer. If you look really closely though it could just be the backlight not turning on when the actual lcd is turning on. If you really need to see whats on the screen and try to find a way to send the files to yourself or upload them somewhere you can try taking a screenshot while the tablet is connected to the computer and check the screenshots folder to see what is on the screen at a certain time. I know it could take a while, but if what's on the tablet is really important it could work. Best of luck.

I tried to see if there was anything vaguely showing but the screen is totally black as far as I can see. I have a service ticket open with Samsung and will send it back for repairs. I would prefer repair over replacement as I would hate to lose all the stuff installed. I generally trust repairs as my philosophy is that they tend to pay better attention on the repair than the assembly line.
Thanks for all the help everyone!
You should definitely try getting it repaired or see if it's possible to copy the data to an external storage prior to getting a new one.
As a general rule I always have Google Drive take automatic backups and store what I can on my external SD to prevent any loss of important work.

Don't you have to unlock the device for the drives to show up on the PC? It's probably waiting for the lock screen to be cleared.

This is what I am thinking - that it is sitting at the lock screen. I tried to see if I could unlock it by touching the screen in the right places but I guess when the screen is dark its not just dark but not functional. I figured as much but thought I would try anyway.

Well - its going back this morning for either repair or replacement. I would prefer repair to save the apps and data and work. Nothing irreplaceable but its a royal pain to reset all this up and my son had significant game experience on the device that might be nice to save.
Either way - it will just be nice to get it working.
Just wanted to follow up with the results. Got notification from Samsung yesterday that they repaired my device and it is on its way back. They replaced the LCD screen and the battery. All free and in warranty and coming back 2 day air.
Not sure why they replaced the battery. I wonder if the battery takes a beating because of 1 game that we play - Bloons TD5. It tends to drain the battery from full to empty in about 30 - 45 minutes. Any other game or function we do the battery last many hours. I wonder if that damages the battery long term?

LG G3 D855 shutsdown on its own

Hello,
So I bought a G3 the day before yesterday and yesterday was my first day with it, and for that first day my phone had shutdown twice on its own. The first time was when my phone was lying on the bed and doing nothing, it had around 50% battery and was not hot or anything.
The second time was this night i don't know when, i have put my G3 on the charger and went to sleep i woke up and it had shutdown.
I didn't made factory reset when i got i from the box which i will when i come home from work and hopefully this will fix it, but does anyone have a problem like that? If is something serious i will be disappointed to return the phone.
p.s. My previous phone was galaxy s2 and had this king of problem only with custom roms and kernels, but i have not put anything on the G3 yet, except activating the developers options and had switched it to ART and the first time the phone had shutdown i thought that the art was the issue and switched it back to dalvik, the second time though was on dalvik.

I have the exact same problem. The past few days when I go to bed and wake up in the morning, the phone has shut itself off. I haven't rooted or installed any custom roms.
I would advise you both to take a factory reset, only install apps you need for a few days and see if the problem persists, if it doesn't install your apps back one by one as it may well be a particular app causing the reboots.
If you still get reboots after the reset and with no apps installed then you may have to take the phone back to swap it.

Yes as I said in the first post the factory format and hard reset will be the first thing that will be done as soon I am at home. About the apps i have pretty much basic apps (facebook, messenger, soundcloud, etc) all from the market except smashhit of which i have the apk and installed from the internal memory.
Except those apps I have 2 mp3s and some wallpapers and nothing else, becouse when i got my phone it was late on the evening and i had no time to do anything else. So the phone is pretty much out off the box and I was verry frustrated when the secound shutdown happened, becouse i tought the first was from the ART runtime.
Anyway today I will have more time to spend on the phone and we will see what will happend.
p.s. The phone does not reboots, just shuts off.

Is it definitely off or is the phone just stuck on a black screen? It is quite common on some devices when something is not quite right for the kernel to be unable to wake the phone up, the phone is still technically on but stuck in deep sleep.
does holding the power button for 2 seconds turn it on? or do you have to hold it for say 7-8 seconds?

It is definetly shut down around 2 seconds(the normal time to hold the power button to turn on) it turns on and work perfectly and does not show anything suspicious in its behavior, it's super fast, not laggy and etc, may be a little high on ram consumptions but with this havy skin i think it is normal or could not be normal idk, the ram consumptions go from about 1,2GB the lowest i have seen to up to 2,3 the highes i have seen.
Anyway about the shut off think yes defenetly 100% sure it is off, it happend again a while ago and i thoght the same thing may be it si deep asleep even i had chacked the weather 10 min ago and call myself from a friends phone and the operator said that the phone is off or i am somewhere without network covarage.
i got same problem. it turn off it selft and black screen even battery still 70%. rmust remove the battery to restart again, ealy bad. huft

If you have to remove the battery to get it to restart then its not actually shut off, its just stuck in deep sleep! which is usually caused by a bad app.
Yes if you have to remove the battery the problem is different, i just have to push the power button and it boots right away after it have shuted off by its self........
i didnt have this issue with my 855. but i did a factory reset after i got the phone just for the hell of it
So it's reset time i finally have some time to the some staff on the phone so hopefully everything will be fine. I will post if this fix or not the problem to inform the other people in this thread.

did you have any luck with the problem? I have the same issue, performed a factory reset and restored, hopefully it will fix too..
Hi all!
I have and have had the same problem and think I've pinpointed the problem to Google Search but can't 100% confirm it yet. I didn't do a factory reset when I got the phone and it shutdown during the night. I did a factory reset, made sure it got enough time to update everything properly. Problem was gone and worked fine. HOWEVER, the phone kept asking me which home screen I prefer at random times when I hit the home button. With random I mean like 4+ times per day. I searched the net and found a threat saying that a guy with a G2 solved the problem by removing Google Search updates. So I decided to do just that and get the factory version back and the questions disappeared but guess what, the phone shut down the following night.
Any takers or might this just be random? Note that it was working fine for three days with the updated Google Search and shutdown the first night after the downgrade.
So I did hard reset and so far so good the phone had not shutted down itself, and I updated everything which need to be updated (mentioning this for the guy with the upper post). So far so good I will keep you in touch if something goes bad...

whether the use of ART
The problem will be resolved?
I suggest take it to your dealer and get it replaced asap. I've seen lots of returned phones(my job at XXXXXXX company ) with the same issue, and as long as the defect is reproducible the dealer will give you a new phone. If it's outa replacement period then they'll probably repair it.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand shut down again but this time it took quite a bit time longer to shut off by its self so i tought the problem was fixed, but it's not, so i am going to the store which i buy it from to replace the device.....
Does this also happen with the korean models?
