I realise it's early days - and that Paul has worked his magic and rooted the Desire ( round of applause! ). Being technically challenged, here is what I'd love
- Recovery image ala Cyanogen / AmonRA
- Easier root method ( for dummies )
- Nandroid goodness
- To be able to have a backup of the stock ROM so I can always get back there.
Will these things come to pass...if so how long?
I am just like you but in the stock HTC sense Rom I(d like the stock and some other useful apps removed
agreed
For me using the gold card was the most technical thing i;ve ever done on a phone. (v diff to the tytn II days!). Rooting the Desire seems horrificallyl technical and i'm looking forward to the moment when it can be made more simple. would be great to just be able to remove some of those apps.
HTC have decided to make it more difficult to root, nothing we can do about that (apart from get a Nexus One) as for removing Apps, what apps do you mean? All apps can be removed without root.
1.Android 2.2 solve multitouch; App2SD; etc.
2.Root Switcher, enable user select root-open or root-close for user needs
3.RAM can be used for all size.
My intention of buying the Desire over the Nexus one was: A Desire is a Nexus One + HTC Sense. But we see... this is not true. HTC removed many stock android programs and implemented their own one. Sense is not bad i think.
What i would like to have is a ported ROM from the Nexus One with the ability to install Sense and/or the other HTC programs if i like them.
Is that possible? Is the Cyanogen-rom like this?
This is my first android powered phone, so i have no clue what is possible and what is not possible.

EDIT - I take that back. You can remove apps using adb shell, but you have to be in recovery mode. Detailed explanations here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6347071&postcount=2 (big thank you to emdzej)

From what I've gathered so far (I'm an Android noob myself): it will be very difficult (if not impossible) to cook a CyanogenMod with Sense included. But it's still a bit early now... give it a few weeks to see what the mods come up with.

Sense widgets is sense (and launcher rosie) only. A CM rom will never have sense widgets
ok, then a standard port nexus -> desire would be great

hi , i love my hero , but i Hate Sense UI...
is there any way to get rid of this damn Sense UI ?
1= i dont like Custom ROMs , Because they're not as stable as i like to be , and have millions of Bugs actually !
Now i am using CKDroid 1.6, but my phone works as a heater too...!
Thanx for helping... (plz!)
You can just stop sense working without changing the sense rom.
On a sense rom go to applications list,
Find "touch flow" then clear its defaults then press home and it will give you an option. On that list click "home" and sense is gone.
You will however lose everything HTC (its still on your phone but you won't be able to use it)

Hey guys,
I have cooked up a nice senseless rom you may wanna take a look at, it very much retains its htc hero goodness just without all that bloat and a number of nice ui elements modified.
Anyways link is below if you are interested:
Andro-Plus 1.1
It is a senseless 1.5 build so expect stability and performance to be pleasing.
Enjoy

You can also remove it with this updatefile from MoDaCo. Read this thread over at his forum. Works perfect
so , what will i lose?
HTC Widgets , HTC Sense (!) , ... and what ?

some people just don't like it I guess.
But I would rather keep it there and just not use it.. just in case... than get rid of it altogether.
Unless of course your really happy flashing all sorts of roms then you can just trial one without sense then go back and use a sense rom later if you wish.
so , i dont like Sense...!
Thanx , i did and Sense UI Went to hell :d
so now , i have a question:
is there anyway to change the Lock page? that first page that we should Slide to get into main home , can we change it to Nexus Lock page?! Slide from Left to Right to Unlock?!
Get LockBot from Matket. The app has many lockscreens.

Im not sure where abouts this is embedded in the code, it may be that you actually need to have a 2.1 rom in order for this to work.
Or it may be that you just need to push a new file to your phone.
A dev will have to answer this.

Excellent rom. Very very fast and stable.
ppl should really stop creating useless threads just because they can...
in this sub-forum you have 3 or 4 threads with ROM´s without sense, why dont you look at the forum before you create a new thread?
As i tested MoDaco 3.1, Kimera 1.1 & MrBangCR 1.0 i can say all is stable & i did not counter any FC at all from this 3 roms yet.

Hi All,
After being a iPhone fan since they first launched, I am getting my first android phone tomorrow. The price of the iPhone 4 put me off purchasing one and to be honest iOS is rubbish without a jailbreak to set it free.
So tomorrow i'll be getting the HTC Desire via Orange. I have some questions if that's ok.
1) Since it's Orange giving me the phone, is it likely that it'll have some kind of horrendous customized Orange ROM on it like they used to do with all of their phones ? If so, how do I get rid of it and put on a standard Desire ROM ?
2) Assuming it does have just a standard Desire ROM, is it best to flash to one of the customized ROM's ?
3) Can I use my Desire as a wifi router via some software ? (MyWi and PDAnet on iPhone)
4) I've been reading about "rooting"....is that the equivalent of jailbreaking? What benefits does it have ? On an iPhone it is of course essential so that you can install Apps which apple don't approve of (amongst other things).
Thank you
I'm sure i'll have 100's more questions when I actually get it but that'll do for now. haha
1) Mild branding, Bot screen, some game demos I belive, and a frew orange apps.
2) Can't help you there
3) I don't belive you can untill Android 2.2 FroYo.
4) Can't help you here either
ok basically the guy above was of no help whatsoever..
1) the orange roms that first came out were packed with orange branding and apps and widgets which would take up space even on the home screens, with the new releases this has been greatly reduced. yes, you can simply flash a generic rom by HTC or one of the custom ones posted in these forums.
2) if it's from orange it wont have a standard htc rom, it is personal preference as to which rom you choose to install as some will have certain features which are more appealing to you. once you are rooted you can just sample around until you find one you like.
3) although this is confirmed to come out with the froyo 2.2 release, it is available on these forums, it comes with most customized roms, and in fact i believe it is even available in the android market.
4) rooting simply allows you to install roms which would usually be locked by your phone, this means that you can flash your phone with literally anything you want (at your own risk ) this also means that as well as roms, certain apps can use this root access in order to provide more features
1. I don't know. (I have no branding)
2. The default is good while IMHO the customised 2.1 roms are better.
3. A custom or rooted rom can have wifi tethering. (I use Oclocks rooted 1.21.405.2 rom)
4. I have never had an Iphone. But I think it's kinda the same. Rooting sets your android phone free (or in the desires case, A little more free) you will be able to install custom roms. New themes. Root only apps + more I can't remember.
I hope that helped

Its not quite the same,
Without rooting, you can still install what you like with Android.
Fon22
2) i would recommend MOdaCO R3.1 Until Offcial Release Of Froyo 2.2 For Desire , cause current port do have little bugs !
3) Yes U Can , if u ROOT Ur Device , there is an app that does what u want , and it's already included when u flash modaco R3.1 Rom
4) no rooting is not like Jailbreaking , an Android device is usable without rooting , but an iphone without jailbreaking is not !
About the jailbreaking/rooting thing you'll be pleasantly suprised with Android, a simple tick in one of the menus allows you to install anything you like and from any source you care to trust. You'll be treated like a grown-up actually, a nice addition is HTC's relative tolerance of rooting and flashing roms, as long as you don't try and port their proprietary Sense UI. Freedom awaits my friend.

i am trying to install the htc mail.apk. i am currently running shadowrom. i tried doing an adb push. it said it copied to \system\app but when i go in there with astro the .apk is nowhere to be found. Is it possible to run this with shadowrom? the reason i am trying to use this one instead of the email.apk one that came with the rom is because my cheap ass companies server is not compatible with the email.apk. with the htc mail.apk i was able to enter all the stuff and when it failed to check the settings i was able to just save them and it would work. with the email.apk i am unable to save them it just keeps telling me to edit the details. any help with this would greatly be appreciated. adb seems to be functioning properly to me. i just learned how to use it about two hours ago. but i tell it adb push mail.apk \system\app. it says it copied it but it doesn't show up. Thanks in advance

ShadowROM is an AOSP ROM. I do not believe the HTC mail program will work as there is no Sense in ShadowROM.
There are several kinds of ROMs for the Incredible. HTC Sense based ones. HTC Vanilla ROMs which are ROMs that have most of the extra bloat removed but still have the underslying Sense dependencies (SkyRaider Vanilla is an example). Finally, AOSP ROMs which are Android Open Source Platform ROMs. These are what the phone manufacturers get from Google and embed their interfaces/applications/tweak in to. HTC has Sense. Motorola has Blur. These are all based on AOSP. It is one of the reasons internal storage was broken for a while on ShadowROM and Cyanogen. Why? Because Google doesn't program for every phone and every phone doesn't have it so the AOSP didn't support it. It's a vendor added feature. Likewise a Sense kernel typically does not work with an AOSP ROM as well.

I learn so much here.
[ROM][07/18/11] Virtuous Sense v2.0.0 :: Enhanced & Optimized Stock ROM (2.42.405.2)
Virtuous Sense is a custom ROM for the HTC Vision series of phones (G2, DesireZ, etc). The goal is to provide a simple, Sense-based, mostly-stock ROM based on the official Desire-Z Sense ROM with essential bug fixes and only subtle enhancements. Virtuous started on the HTC Droid Incredible and is currently one of the most popular ROMs for that device. Virtuous for the Incredible has over 6000 users with an established reputation for stability; which we intend to continue for Vision users.
Features
Based off the official DesireZ Sense ROM (WWE 2.42.405.2), deodexed and zipaligned.
Pre-rooted with the latest version of Superuser and modified ramdisk to allow adb remount, mock locations, etc.
Wifi calling included and fully functional, conditionally installed for T-Mobile USA users only.
Optical trackpad unlock/wake.
Enhanced reboot options built-in, allowing for booting into recovery, bootloader, hot boot, etc.
Virtuous Sense custom kernel with overclocking daemon (no need for SetCPU/Tuner). Screen Off: 245760 / 599040 (conservative). Screen On: 245760 / 998400 (ondemand).
IO optimizations such as use of ext4 for all mounts and larger read-ahead buffer for improved sdcard performance.
Updated versions of all Market-available apps.
All Market-installable apps installed in /data/app. These apps are automatically installed for you both on initial install and after a factory reset/wipe. There are custom scripts to use Android's package manager (pm) to manage these apps, which ensures they are installed properly.
Added applications: ChromeToPhone, Google Voice and Titanium Backup. Since these are Market apps, they are automatically installed in /data/app for easy removal if desired.
Bloatware, defined as anything you could easily choose to download from the Market yourself, has been removed.
Disabled boot animation audio.
Automatic Virtuous OTA upgrade notification and installation via ROM Manager.

Very nice rom.
However can't install latest Flash Player from marketplace.
Other apps install fine so far though.
So far, the installation went flawless! Just getting a different feel of HTC Sense. This is really wear Titanium shines as backing up apps is such a god send.
EDIT: My only gripe is that I paid for the premium version of ROM Manager via Paypal, got the Premium, but installed this and lost it. =/ Is there any way for me to get it back, especially after paying for it?

I had to uninstall the existing flash player from 'manage applications' in settings.
then the one in marketplace was able to install.
Great rom!
So whats so great about this release? Not trying to be ungrateful i honestly just want to clear the doubts
It's a modified version of HTC Sense with a couple perks that he explains in his post. It's nice and all but I got too adjusted to the stock feel of Android. HTC Sense is really nice, very graphical and user friendly, but I'm reverting back. Maybe once this comes out of the beta, I'll head on back to it.
But it's good! Try it out for kicks.
I have a Desire HD with 2.2, and im assuming 2.3 will be released for it some time (does anyone know when?) - Thing is I dont know how updates work on Android (first smartphone). I've only had experience with iPod Touch where as it updated via iTunes.
Do I manually have to update with a 2.3 rom or is a program gonna do it for me? Also, when going from 2.2 to 2.3, will it wipe my phone clean, removing all apps.?
Android 2.3 will not be around soon...
and the updates can either be installed via htc.com or if the updates are released as over the air (OTA) update, your phone will notify you when there is an update. You just have to press update when you see the notification on your phone. You can manually check for updates via Menu ---> Settings ---> About phone ----> system software updates.
An update is likely to remove your contacts etc. But that is yet to see. HTC will mention if the update will erase your data or not.
But 2.3 is on Nexus S and many more already, how long are they gonna wait before letting other devices get it? Im not an Apple-fanboy, but I like it how they let all their devices get the latest update, and not just the newest ones.
Unfortuneately its not as simple as that.....google may release the latest update but each phone is different and cannot use the single one update that has been released....for example if you have a desire hd then you will have to wait for htc to modify the update to include sense ....or if you have a xperia then you will have to wait for Sony ericcson to modify it to include mediascape and timescape.......where as apple control their own Operating system and devices on which it is released on as such they dont need to implement other third party phone manufactures modifications to their update....hope this helps...
Feel free to correct me if im wrong

I didn't even think of the fact that each manufacturer has their own customized android-system. Suddenly open-source makes more sense . In my head I was waiting for Google to release it, not HTC . Does any HTC devices officially have 2.3 yet? (Not hacked/pirated download) Cause then at least that'd be a sign of it coming - hopefully - soon.
Sounds like you shouldn't mess with the phone, like rooting it and get 2.3 now, I say wait it out til htc release an ota update to 2.4, I'm guessing at least 2 or 3 months from now.

Havent had plans for it either. Rooting and customROMs is just too technical for me, and I fancy the stock rom alot (first smart phone... I'd be happy with any ROM )
2.4? Then I guess it would only make sense for HTC to skip 2.3 (well... or at least if 2.4 is coming in April!)
Thanks for the stuff, guys! Gonna wait out for 2.4!!!

By the time Gingerbread is out for this Phone, it will be Snowing at your place.
Meant, HTC plans for Gingerbread is not so likely, if so do happen, likely around in 6 month or so. By that time Desire HD2 is out already with Duo Core and 3.2 MP Frontal Camera / 10 MP Rear Camera w/ Dual Flash.
Just read the Bible on Rooting, aint so hard, had a 2nd grader done it on my extra phones. Once Rooted and Custom ROM, you will LOVE all the Extra Speed and Bumps the Factory RUU had all this time.
