Why have you done this?
I am having similar issues. Coming from a winmob I find it amazing that you cannot install apps to the SD card out of the box and have to go through a long, no doubt complex and warranty voiding process to to be able to do it and then, if my experience with flashing winmobs is anything to go by, the phone will never work quite the same again! That said is there a guide available for rooting a desire and can anyone tell us the dangers / benefits?

So I can install apps to my sd card? Kind of obvious no?

It's a security issue with Linux based phones. It's not a "long, no doubt complex and warranty voiding process". It's not exactly difficult to do so long as you can follow instructions. The only time consuming part might be downloading a linux live cd to use to complete the rooting process. I've already proved in another thread that the action of rooting itself won't void the warranty, the warranty becomes invalidated only if a defect is caused by the rooting of the device.
Windows Mobile is a whole other animal than Android so don't take that in to account. The rom you flash during the rooting process is a standard generic rom, the only difference is that it gives you root access.
That sounds great abc, very reassuring thanks. Are there any decent instructions you could point me to?

There ya go.
He's even simplified the process since yesterday
Thanks a lot abc. Have you or anyone else rooted their phones yet? Does it affect the phone detrimentally in anyway? Is the only advantage Apps2SD or are there other benifits? How do you implement Apps2SD once you are rooted? Thanks!
Check your news feed apps, rss feeds etc through the manage applications and check their cache. I found my news feed widget from google has kept 42mb in it's cache, and kept growing every time it updated....

A question to those who have upgraded to 2.3 using HTC's official upgrade.
Does the phone have less internal memory available after the update?
I mean I'm already a bit squeezed for space, will this only be worse if i upgrade to 2.3?
yes, but depending on what apps you install, apps2sd is better, moving more of *some* apps.

I don't quite understand what you are suggestion.
Obviously I move everything to sd if i can - but noticeably Googles own bloatware (like the market) can't and refuse to budge.
I'm just worried I'd end up with even less internal space.

A quick lesson.
The *main* partitions on the NAND memory are:
/system (where the ROM and all its apps go)
/cache (where market downloads are stored whilst downloading)
/data (where all user apps, data and settings are stored - this is refered to as "Internal Storage"
What is in /system/app (google maps etc) is NOT counting towards your "Internal storage" in /data. It is irrelevant if you can move them or not.
"move to sd" in Android is better in 2.3 than 2.2.
In 2.2, "move to sd" moves /data/app/whatever.apk to /sdcard/.android_secure, making more space available in /data
in 2.3, "move to sd" moves the same as above AND ALSO /data/data/whatever/lib.
However, NOT ALL apps have /lib. So yes, after 2.3, it takes more of the space up in /data with settings storage etc, but depending on what apps you have, you will compensate by being able to move app libs as well as the apks.
Hope this clarifies.
Ah, thanks rootSU - that does clarify it.
So what HTC's program does is making a larger "system" partition?
Do you know where the phone stores received/sent SMS messages? Do they go "data"?
No system stays the same size at 250MB. It just stores more information in /data.
Sms is /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db

Hm, I read somewhere they said they had to repartition the internal memory which is why it couldn't be an over the air update.

Nope. They had to remove stuff to make it fit. They were not entirely happy with their finished product so released it as a dev-only release

What I heard was that it was necessary to run a program on the PC and they thought most people couldn't figure it out.
Do you think there is a reason to upgrade or not to upgrade to this?
(i'm not going to root eiter way)
I did upgrade to the official 2.3 and the result was that the phone got slower. With 2.2 I was able to watch 720p videos on youtube (using the browser, not the app) and sometimes even 1080p. But after the upgrade 720p got very laggy. So, just skip upgrading and root your phone. There are plenty of awesome roms over here!

There was a comment in a thread asking why they couldn't repartition in the update. Someone replied it wasnt possible and I said that it probably would be but there was no way it would be done. Not sure if thats what you're refering to, but they definitely did not repartiton the NAND. They removed apps and wallpapers to get it to fit in the 250MB /system partition

Its called an RUU. Rom Upgrade utility. Many of tehse are available for HTC phones. You can get full ROM's in RUU format or parts of in OTA updates. They usually release both, but they simply didnt other with OTA for this they didnt want to release it. They only continued due to pressure from the consumer base.

Generally 2.3 GB is a faster and better OS than 2.2. That said, I rooted at 2.1 and have not had a stock sense ROM since my first 2.2 ROM nearly a year and a half ago (if not longer, I forget). I'm not really in a position to comment on how good stock 2.3 is or if you are likely to have video playback issues as mentioned above. I can only really talk to you about root, which you said you will not do.
So i have read many post and i mean many and i am still working my brain on catching on to all these. If you all notice, there is a lot to rooting, what you can do, names to things, so so much my brain hurts lol.
But, finally after almost 2 years of being here, 3 phones i grabbed my cojones and rooted my SG2 while still stock. So here are some things. I was going nuts to get Nandroid backup, come to find out that is just a normal back up while in recovery mode.
Now i was trying to do some things with Titanium Backup but got a bit confused. I noticed that with the lite version, I can only uninstall apps not freeze. I want to clean my phone from all the clogs, especially when i notice my memory use shows most of the time 550m-769m, which i have to keep cleaning it. Hoping, removing some apps will help this. What is the difference between freezing and uninstalling. Also, i came across:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/spr...SENVeXlqUm5vV0E&single=true&gid=0&output=html
Which it suppose to tell me which i can which i cant. Does this still apply with ICS? And looking at the list, all greens are good, correct?
Also, using root explorer is kinda weird. I was trying to install S Voice which it seems to be a big pain. For one, i have the package in a folder. When searching for it with Root Explorer, and i find S Voice, try to change permission it wont let me. Telling me the following, "Permissions change was not successful. Please note that some file systems (e.g. SD card) do not allow permission changes."
Also, trying to copy something into my system/app wont let me either.
What am i doing wrong? or missing?
thanks in advance.

I know the difference from freezing and uninstalling is that freezing halts the app from running and removes it from your app list. If you are uninstalling something you think is bloat, back it up first, in case it screws things up you can restore it. Freeze is a good way to test whether or not you want to just simply uninstall it.
Titanium Backup Pro is totally worth the few bucks though if you can afford it.. a real good buy..
As far as the other stuff, I don't mess with system/app things so maybe someone else can help with that.
For the green-coloured apps, I would make sure I have an alternate app that can take care of that feature of the phone. For example you can remove the camera app, but without a replacement/alternate app your phone won't have a camera function.
TBP is the perfect app to test whether an app is good to remove. Just freeze it and see if your phone acts up. My understanding is that freezing=not letting an app run, uninstalling=getting rid of it.
In terms of not having the permission to copy files in the system directories, you may need to install a terminal emulator to change the permissions and do the copying manually.
Thank you guys and sorry for the very late reply. Using TBP i was able to FREEZE many apps, decided to go this route, i was and still am abit afraid of damaging something and not being able to go back and fix it.
However, i still have a few situations. Even freeze so many apps my battery still dies very fax with little use i give the phone. I also see the following apps under my memory usage and i do not know what they are and if they can be froze too to even get more memory back.
Enterprise VPN Service
IPService
SIM Toolkit
CSC
Bluetoothtest (i know that is the bluetooth but do not know if there is a way to freeze this program)
Google Services Framework
Package Access Helper
com.sec.android.providers.d
Download manager
Samsung Account
My Uploads
com.movial.ipprovider
Badgeprovider
Device Management
Systeme manager application
Popupiureceiver
Mobilelife Contacts

Atmazzz i want to say thank you. Doing what you said helped my hang. I do not have that problem anymore. But i am wondering if fixing the permission could have be the cause i lost S Voice talkback feature. What i mean, is that after doing the wipe cache/dalvik and fixing permissiong, now my S Voice does not talk back to me. No matter how many time i restart the phone or whatever i do, it wont talk anymore.
On another note, thanks to you, i have come to understand more about all the rooting. All i have to do now is soon gets some strength and install a new rom than stock. But there are so many, i do not know which one to use. Especially with the official ICS i bet they are better now.
I just also hope that neither of the rom come with the bricking problem. As far as i read it only happens when using ICS kernel and my phone is 0X12 so i get worry.
So I have always wondered what happens when you remote wipe a phone from like Android Device Manager and if you have a custom recovery like TWRP. I tried the wipe on my M8 and it for sure worked, but since TWRP was installed it left all the data ion the SD Card. Is there anyway to force TWRP to do a full factory reset by default rather than just removing apps etc?
If not I may just have to install the stock recovery, if I can find it for my Bell M8.

that won't wok if the phone is not in my hands.
make a back up and try it out and let us know ! lol
already did, wiped from device manager and it wiped the phone but left the SD card intact. This is a major oversight for custom recovery because same applies on my N7. Send a remote wipe to the phone, your actually just giving your data away because now they can access your SD card since you wiped it remotely but it didn't wipe the SD card.
Wonder if encrypting the SD Card and then wiping will resolve this? The data should be useless after remote wiping and will need the advanced wipe from TWRP to bring the SD card back to life.
I use an app called Cerberus that can remotely wipe the SD card. It also has a bunch of other features for remotely controlling phones.
Been a happy user for several years. Never needed the remote wipe, but I have used the location and other features.

It doesn't have a wipe on failures, but it does take a picture and email you after X failures.
It can also be setup to notify you if a different SIM is inserted.
I also like that is can be controlled via a client app, the web or texts from any phone (with a password).
I like that it has an update.zip installer that survives factory resets. Few thieves will know/think to flash a new ROM.
Edit: Geez, I sound like a shill. Just a very happy user. I think I found it on XDA originally.

Hi!
Can anyone tell me how to backup the data partition on a T-Mobile Galaxy Note 10+ 5G without any sort of root or custom recovery that would trigger Knox flag? I am fully stock and I'm pretty sure Samsung has a tool that allows them to do a dd or full data dump of the partitions on the phone
I want to be able to back it up, fully factory reset it, and potentially restore the data partition so it is back into the pre wiped state.
Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated!

I fail to see the point?
For the purpose of backups such as Titanium Backups with app data included or just download the firmware root files ?
If the later, wouldn't it be easier to just unpack a firmware?
If the first ... without root I don't think you can at first thought. Maybe an Odin Dump? But since root is encrypted (I think as this never crossed my mind) I don't really know if it's possible or maybe Heimdal if it still exists ?
Any tips? I'm looking to do this as well. The purpose is to have an efficient backup process for dozens of apps and their configuration files residing in their appdata directory (which I can view using Solid Explorer). I spent a long time building these configurations and continue to update them so I'd like to regularly back them up once a month.
The problem is I am not rooted otherwise this would be very simple. I'm a bit wary to root when there are still OTA updates being provided.
Without root, the only options are Samsung Switch (doesn't do non-Samsung app data), Google Drive backup (doesn't do data), and Helium (doesn't work).

I deliberately use apps that allow disk backup like Poweramp, Digi Clock, ColorNote, Samsung Contacts and Package Disabler.
I use SmartSwitch to transfer home settings only so all the icons and shortcuts need to be recreated but at least the base setup is there. I use ApkExport to make installable copies of all my apps including system apps and updates then stash them on the SD card. Everything I need for a full reload is on the SD card. I then redundantly backup the SD card.
Yeah I wish I could clone the drive like I can with a PC...
There's issues rooting a Samsung and the same goes for OTA updates. I don't update my N10+'s and spend very little time doing maintenance. This one in my hand is still running on Pie, its current load is over 2yo; still snappy fast and stable. Security is not an issue. My other N10+ is running on 10, I prefer Pie. Neither will likely ever be upgraded.

Haha wow, and you haven't rooted either of them? If I had two, I would love to have one rooted for experimenting. What issues exactly are there with rooting? I'm guessing typical hardware issues like thumbprint for some ROMs?
And yeah it sounds like I will have to manually copy things to a synced folder... maybe I'll make a really lengthy macro that exports from my most important apps one-by-one.

The one is a backup, that's how much I like them.
They run well, security isn't an issue and they fullfill their mission; I have very little to gain by rooting except lose time and potentially a device.
There's no way to root these except maybe a granting a paid 3rd party vendor complete access to phone to unlock the bootloader, a huge security risk. No.
I don't worry about app data except for the ones I already backup especially Poweramp. Recreating that would take a long time. The other app data is best tossed, and could have been responsible for the reload. This N10+ in my hand was last reloaded over 2 years ago. Still fast and stable; that what Android is capable of.
Going over the settings and apps when reloading helps you to find things you may have overlooked. It also refreshes your memory of the how and why things work on your custom setup.
Hi, I don't know if it's the right place to ask for help, but I'll still try.
A couple of days ago while travelling I updated my OnePlus 9 Pro with the latest update of Android 12 not knowing that update was apparently quite buggy as I found out later. Previously all updates have always run smoothly on my phones, so I wasn't really cautious about it. As a result after update phone didn't work anymore, it started always to vibrate after giving sim card PIN kinda trying to start (similar to the sound of whirring hard drive), but it couldn't go beyond the home screen's wallpaper. As I needed my phone, I had to choose "Format user data" under Wipe data from the boot menu as there weren't any other options under Wipe. I got a working phone after that, but I lost all my data.
So the question is: is there a way to restore videos and photos from the gallery (my photos weren't synchronizing to Google Photos) after this formatting? And more precisely, eg. by using DroidKit Data recovery tool I can perform only quick recovery unrooted, which doesn't find any files from the gallery. There is an option to perform a deep recovery, but for that I need to root my phone. Rooting apparently requires bootloader unlocking, which most likely wipes all phone data anyway without possibility to restore.
And more questions: would a deep recovery even find those gallery files, if the phone would be rooted? If bootloader unlocking wipes all data completely, so it wouldn't be possible to restore any data after that for sure? Is there an option to perform a deep scan without a phone being rooted? Is there an option to root without bootloader unlocking? There are some apps, which don't really do automatic rooting, and they aren't trustworthy, despite they say that they can root phones in seconds.
I definitely have learned from this recent experience, and I will do better in the future.
I think most likely it's not possible to restore my photos and videos I lost in this case, but I just had to ask to make sure, there are no more tricks I can use... Any thoughts? Thanks!
I would think there would be an app in the app store that would recover your photos and videos without root since they are to located in the root drive. It may take a few tries to find the right app. Good luck. That is why I routinely backup everything on my internal storage to the PC just for this reason.
Your storage is encrypted. There is no way to recover the files as the factory reset generated new keys when wiping the storage. Sorry for the bad news. Make sure to make backups before taking updates in the future is all anyone can suggest.

Thank you for the reply! I just wonder, why then everywhere on so many websites they say, it's possible to recover data after factory reset? But as I tried it seems impossible as you say.
Just one example: https://www.hardreset.info/devices/...possible-to-recover-data-after-factory-reset/.

I mean a lot of those places just copy and paste info to drive clicks. Android didn't always encrypt userdata.

I've tried many of those before, but they don't see gallery photos nor videos at all after phone factory reset, though they claim they can do that. What these apps can see and recover in my experience are call history, documents, audio files, sms (all of these things were recovered anyway from the phone backup), photos and videos from Whatsapp (which I don't need as its' chats were backed up before that update). Some of them offer a deep recovery (don't know what a deep scan would find in the end), which requires phone to be rooted, and that requires bootloader unlocking, which will wipe storage for good anyway, so basically all those apps are useless.
