Can't wait to get Market Enabler and Wireless Tether on my Desire.
Also gonna be curious about what the custom ROM's are gonna add to the phone
Go Paul!!
I can't wait to get rid of Sense!
(And before all the bloody "Why didn't you get a Nexus One"-comments it's because it's more expensive, has less ram and isnt available in Norway (like so many other things ))
" PaulOBrien Right, all being well, root coming for all Desire owners tomorrow! (must eat now!)"
Cheers for Paul job well done indeed
Would we able to import CM5 over?
And would that delete sense? Maybe the modaco kitchen could add sense to CM5
Time to get a good divx player ported to the Desire now that root seems to be there.

The phone itself rocks and I love it! I just hope HTC will get their sh** together and keep us up to date with official (drivers!) Android updates.

Paul,
I am forever thankful to you. And not even so much because of Wireless Tether for root users.. Mainly because google is too ****ing stupid atm to quickly solve the app storage problem, and the only way to get apps stored on your SD is apps2sd.. So hope to see some cool ROMs... Thank you so much!
Fantastic news....
Great, looking forward to some great ROMS coming up.

Any body got some info ?
of course will be, the question is when?
thats quick ....
Are we talking months or weeks untill 'droid 2.2 comes out
The internet is being a bit tight lipped.
The deisre is lovely, but not finished yet.
flash is nice, divx is vital and 720p video is something I wsan't expecting...
How are we going to get it when its released?
Will it be a user ROM style hardware flash through PC sync or will i just download a file to my phone, click go and 10minutes later my phone is amazing??
(i'm having fun wiping smug faces of iphone owning freinds as they ask what phone I have and i show them, then tell them I've got it for £15/mnth )
you'll get it here on XDA as usual. ready to be flashed on your device as any other ROM
2.2 aka Froyo: maybe next week!!!
I read this on engadget:
Engadget's post about Froyo
I don't really want to root my phone as it's I think really good as it is but I wouldn't say no to Froyo! especially since it apparently boosts performance a lot!
Quote form Engadget: "Update: How much faster is a Nexus One running Froyo? 450 percent faster, according to the Android Police. They claim to have a device running the as-yet-unreleased firmware that can perform over 37 million floating-point operations per second in the Linpack benchmark... compared to about 7 megaflops without. Oh yeeaaah."
As soon as a Froyo rom leaks, people will rip it apart and mod it to hell to get it to run on all kinds of devices. I'm sure we'll see Paul make a 2.2 Desire ROM, for example and now that HTC has released the Kernel source code, it should be easier to port existing quality roms like Cyanogenmod to the device. They'll all require root access to flash as they're unofficial roms. HTC will probably eventually port Froyo themselves, but that will probably take months.
Still, 2.2 hasn't shown up yet, so no dice. We'll have to wait until google I/O before that happens
it's going to be loooong till HTC themselves release it..but as soon as its out for nexus we'll see it here on xda in no time!
If you don't want to root & use a cooked ROM I wouldn't count on having it earlier than 6 months from now.
HTC needs to change Sense UI for Android 2.2 and looking at the Hero, which STILL does not have 2.1 I wouldn't expect it to be quick.

Months?? Seeing how things are going with the hero, I'd say they'll release it to the desire once the 2.3 is out. So better think of it as next year.
IMO Desire's owners are very important for HTC, since we are buying their flagship phones. I think they must keep us satisfied, if not, we will buy different phone next time. And I won't be happy if Nexus One owners will get 2.2 and we will not.
BTW isnt the evo 4g an Android 2.2 phone quz 2.1 didn't support 4g correct me if im wrong but if it is the update for the desire wont cost them so much time to port.

that looks good, i think i'll be rooting if HTC dont give us that officially
Just for clarification, once it's out for the N1 a rooted Desire can be flashed with mostly the same ROM or will it need a lot of hacking from the community, and wailting for mere mortals ?

After yesterday's disapointing release I finally bit the bullet and got a new 'phone from my network operator. I was offered a choice between the HTC sensation and the Samsung Galaxy II and I went for the latter mainly because I was not impressed with the HTC approach to the GB update. I will move to reading their section in xda.
To all those that have helped me either through lurking on their threads or by answering my questions I just wanted to say thank-you!
Enjoy your new phone! Although I didn't think Samsung are any better at updates lol

if you want updates you need to go Nexus really.
Samsung are flavour of the month for the moment - but remember their FroYo release? It took about 3-4 months after HTC's release...
Failing that you just need to go AOSP with a custom rom - which you can do on almost any handset.
Perhaps you should address your goodbye to HTC directly

I love my Desire
I love the my Desire, and pretty sure it is going to be the Android phone I would use for at least 1.5 years.
The main reason being there are so many Desire users, the ROMs just keep coming and getting better.
Like op i've moved from a desire to a sgs2 for many reasons, mainly my contract was up and I didn't like the lag on the sensation screen! But what gets me is how many people keep going on about custom roms for the desire. Of course there are loads the phone is old in tech year's, I'm sure the same will happen to the sgs2 in about 6 months, but to be honest I don't find much difference between the 2 apart from never having to think about how many applications I can have. Ie running out of memory! As they say you pay ya money and make ya choice.

I was thinking of selling my desire and buy a Sensation but when I read all those user comments about all the issues I changed my mind, sensation still have that nice look, but when we talk about software I cant say the same of what I hear, now I dont know what to do to keep desire and wait until they release some new phone wich will work normal, or give up of HTC and buy some other brand with android.

True, but Samsung didn't promise Desire users Gingerbread and a new version of Sense and failed to deliver.
I got the Desire based on this, and know I feel they flipped the finger, so I can't really blame OP for ditching HTC.
I'm surprised google didn't have a word with them since google set out a baseline for all phone manufacturers that each handset should get at least 18 month's of updates? Therefore google is saying the max size each version of android is gonna be and the processing power requirements! It's like the htc wildfire this will never see gingerbread as it has the same if not less memory and power than the desire! Yet its a newer phone than the desire! Or is it google just doesn't care? And is letting phone manufacturers get away with it?

I love when people talk about companies "promising" something and then moan when it doesn't happen. Reminds me of the old days in the school playground...
From what I can see, HTC did thier best to deliver, but unfortunately the constraints of the device stopped them being able to do more. What do people expect them to do, come over and upgrade the memory in each phone?
Some people just want the moon on a stick.

I would root now. If you take the ota there is no current method to root it and not many people if any at all working on a solution. If you really want sense 3 your going to have to root as the new gb update is still sense 1. As for your warranty there are ways to unroot and go back to stock if you would need to send it in. You will have to wait for someone else to give you a good sense 3 rom as i dont mess with them anymore. They tend to be buggy and have wifi issues as they are ported mostly from sprint phones, and never really ment for our phones.
more questions thank you

All the custom roms are going to have bugs of one kind or another. For that matter so do the official ones so that's certainly not a slight on the rom devs here.
You just need to peruse the development forum and find the one's with the features and look you like. Gotta warn you though, once you start flashing roms it gets a bit addictive. I think the longest I've stayed with one is about 2 weeks!! It's always fun checking them out.
yeah i bet it is addictive.. i love messing with my phone.. i am running 4 different launchers right now.. LPpro - ADWex - Launcher 7 - and the stock Sens
really the only reason why i want to root is to get those other UI's.. i wish i didnt have to root to get them..

Do you have an extended warranty, or insurance. If it's insurance, I wouldn't worry about it. I've never sent a phone back for an insurance claim because they always get "lost", "stolen", or "sink to the bottom of a lake", if ya get my drift.

I came across that site a couple weeks ago and it doesn't look very promising so far. Their furthest along ROMS, for devices that have been out for a long time, are still barely functioning. But maybe if they throw enough people at the SGSIII, they can get something that works OK by the time my warranty is up in a year and I dive into different ROMS.
I'm definitely going to keep my eye on this, because TouchWiz sucks balls... but it's going to take more than just booting with pretty much nothing working before I get my hopes up.
I'd help if I could since I'm one of the guys who wants this to come to fruition, but I have no development skills at all. I hope you guys can get it worked out though and look forward to seeing the finished product.

You are? I think touchwiz is an improvement over sense (not saying TW is awesome or anything, most ROMs have better UIs). I was in a Sprint store looking for a Case-Mat Pop (kickstand) for my phone a few days back, and I played around with the Evo LTE. I was really unimpressed with the latest Sense and was glad I went Sammy for this 2 year go around.

I'll admit TouchWiz 4 has REALLY improved. But, Sense, even with its problems, still has a lot of function that's hard to let go of.
Would it be easier to get on the US variants?
I only say that because put the Adreno graphics on the S4 chips. I remember the NS4G Sense ports having issues with graphics because of the Hummingbird processor.
|Trolling with a smile|
Went with sammy for the removable battery mainly. The first couple of days with the s3 without a spare battery was killing me. Ofcourse it was a new phone so I was playing with it a lot and trying out different roms etc and battery went down fast. Plus I still had to use it to make calls and text so I had it hooked up to a charger everywhere I was (home, work, car). I was always afraid of it going down to 40% battery lol. Anyway after getting a spare OEM battery + charger all is well again. No more worries specially when I went out.
Touchwiz isnt bad but sense just looks nicer to me and not having to install extra widgets (twitter, facebook, weather) was nice. Also like the weather lock screen. I miss that.
Anyhow I'm now with tmobile and Im hoping these guys will port it over to all the carriers and not just sprint.
