Desire vs Touch Diamond? - Desire General

Hi
I have the first HTC Touch Diamond phone and are very satiesfied with it. Now it's time to get a new phone and my mind comes to the Desire.
I use the phone with GPS and phone calls and some playing.
What are the cons / pros between Desire and Touch Diamond? Are there any cons or only pros on that phonechange?

I had Diamond since it came out, loved phone but as you I wanted smth new, yepp I got Desire
It is much much faster(Internet is flawless, PDF reading too, reading office documents is much nicer and faster) than Diamond, better battery life, better(more big with better resolution and much better colors) screen, nicer look and after all for me Android is better than WinMo
Here is also a pic

If you have any questions let me know

I also had the Diamond.
The Desire is better in every way. Much faster, better screen that can be seen in sunlight (diamond was completely inviaable outside), better battery life, easier to type on. It's a bit bigger which is possibly the only disadvantage.

I think that I can better see on my screen in direct sunlight with Diamond..though need to test this!
Oh and yea sometimes I miss dimensions of Diamond..but when I look at screen I forget about everything

Yeah, me too... still love the size of Compact IV (Diamond)! But it was just hopeless being so slow, freezing when you want to make basic things like texting or answering a call!
Im just bit sad the Desire's back cover doesnt look to be the same quality... I would like to swap my SIM card every now and then to my Compact IV - for example when go running, or somewhere where dont dare take my Desire with me. Dont think the back cover will last long if I keep opening/closing it...

I don't have those problems since I don't move my SIM card at all
But the material they used for back cover is good for hand, it has very nice feel in hand

Came from the Diamond too. It really shows how bad the diamond is - in comparison. I've not had any freezing trying to answer calls, the battery lasts easily more than a day, the screen is amazing.
TBH, I think the problem with the diamond was WinMo, not the hardware

This.
The Hero has virtually identical hardware, but is so much better in many aspects. Also have a Diamond at the moment, planning to switch to the Desire.
Can't say I'm experiencing the same problems you guys are, my battery life is more than fine. Even now I can still do 3-5 days with a single charge depending on how much I use it; granted, I don't make a lot of calls, but I do have my emails set up on it
It has served me well but it's time to get Android, as Microsoft is heading in a direction I don't like

Just like to add that although the desire is a super phone the email is much better on the diamond if you are using imap/push email. Calender is also not on par with the diamond but these are most likely down to the diamond being winmo and more compatable with microsoft. If you have hotmail on the diamond then you will only get pop access with the desire. The phone is otherwise one of the best I have had, I came from the Touch HD and Touch Diamond 2
Sully

I moved from the diamond to the desire, it really is no question between the two, desire kicks the diamonds ass in every way!
android is better then windows mobile 6.1, the customiziablenes (new word) of desire compaired to the diamond is just unreal, while the diamond lasted me 18 months , and i wasnt really bored with it, as soon as i got the desire i had no idea why i wasnt bored with it!

I've bought Touch Pro (Diamond with qwerty keyboard) as my first pda and hardware was ok (but I didn't like the build quality with the keyboard), however WinMo made this device useless. Slow and absolutely unreliable. In my opinion a WinMO device just can't be used as regular phone. I've spent 3 months flashing roms and tweaking it, spent hours/days/weeks just to make this device to work as I would expect from it. I gave up and now I'm really happy I have Android device (Desire). Never going to buy any WinMo device again. Going from Touch pro to Desire is like going to superbike from old rusty grandmother's bicycle.

I got shot of the stock ROM quite quickly - I just couldn't put up with T-Mobile pink ! (or the lack of memory) I tried lots of different ROMs, but I can't remember who's I ended up with. Gave up eventually and stuck with one that caused the least problems

I was going to upgrade to the HD2 as I use IGO8 and Garmin XT for GPS but that would have been £250 and the Desire was free and a much better size. I have got Motonav up and running which is nearly the same as IGO8 and uses the same maps etc. GPS reception is better than on my Diamond. Garmin XT is not on Android yet but Garmin have an Android phone out now (A50) so I expect a program like XT will be developed soon. I use the Nataly rom on my Diamond which is very good and stable but the Desire is great on the standard rom without any modifications. I flashed the standard rom to get rid of the Orange branding though (requires a "gold card"). There are no custom roms yet as the Desire has not been rooted. Although I am new to Android it does seem better than WinMo for me. I have not used it as a phone yet (waiting for my Krussel Luna case to arrive), so cannot comment on that but I found it a big weakness of the Diamond. Sense works very well and I never feel the need for a stylus. To sum up - go for it.

Come from Diamond to Desire too and i never look back. Cant belive how can be mobile phone so fast

I also had a diamond before. The desire is soooo much better. I can now type, surf the net, use gmail properly, and enjoy the speed boost. Android is way better and so much easier to use. I've flashed my diamond to hell and back and as soon as I got something working, another was broke. memory leakage, slow as a phone, despite the good hardware under the hood. I'm glad i was able to switch to the desire, despite the cheesy name

The Diamond's screen is much better when you're sitting in the sun. Desire's screen turns into a mirror. Other than that, loving the Desire

Good with a alot of replies... When the phone is in store I WILL get one

Strange the exact opposite of my experience. Sitting in the sun with my Diamond I couldn't even tell that it was switched on. With the Desire it is not great but is readable in what passes for sun down here in Folkestone. I do however use the "Brightness Toggle Widget" and set the brightness to 100% when necessary. I found the default "auto brightness" to not work at all.

I'm making this transition now ordered it on Friday last week, wont get it till this Friday! So much for First Class delivery (usually next day).
The worst bit about it was I lost my Diamond on Friday so it's a week without a phone :|
I never even got to say goodbye lol.
Oh well the Diamond was falling apart anyway!

Blackstone - falling into oblivion?

Hello Xda fellows
Does anyone else have a strange feeling that our beloved blackstone is slowly but for sure falling into oblivion?
sigh
yes, of course it is. it is three genrations old now (touch pro 2 and diamond 2 are next generation and htc leo is the newest).
However, this doesnt mean its going to be forgotten. the android project is really gaining ground. the "improving gfx performance" guys have just released a killer graphics pack and all of the apps made in future for the td2 and tpro 2 (maybe even leo) will work fine.
so, to answer your question, it is getting a bit old (a year old now) but that doesnt mean its going to disappear. look at the polaris and kaiser
good to hear opinion like that thanks man
the good thing about our phones is that it is still "current" in that the _relatively_ "newly released" TD2 and TP2 have very similar specs to our phone...it's just not at the very top anymore
Falling into obvlivion might be correct, but that doesn't mean the device is bad. If you like a device, you like it nomatter how many new devices are out.
I Dont think its falling into oblivion, look at the specs...
More ram than most, better screen than most, wvga is becoming more and more recognised, you dont get a 3.5mm headphone socket on most other devices, 5mp camera, most others are 3 or below, and really as long as xda developers lives on all devices do too
As far as I can see, it's still the top of the tree until the Leo is released.

HTC are not making a phone called Leo.
Yes. I am a pedant
A month ago I sold my HTC Diamond for a Touch HD...
I had the option to go for a Touch Pro, Diamond 2 etc...
but after trying a few the screen on the Touch HD is far superior to any others tried even the Iphone doesn't look as perfect as the HD.
It runs as fast as both the Touch Pro and Diamond 2.
The only difference in my opinion is the TV out on the Touch Pro.
Its inevitable that as time goes on the HD will eventually become obsolute or redundant as you'll move to pastures green. However with the HD, I feel this is still a bit in the future. There is nothing out there to really make me consider getting my wallet out and purchasing it. As time goes on this will obviously change, but not just yet!!

Now I would have absolutely agreed with you until this last week or so. The HD2 just looks too good to miss.
It'll certainly quieten the missus and her damned iPhone a bit.
Meh, I still got me HTC Universal running, the bigger the HTC the longer they last!
Blackstone is NOT going to fade out so soon.
Crap, I just switched from Polaris to Blackstone... )
And there has to be something much much better than HD2 to make me cry why have I bought HD...
I guess you are right!
about HD2, is just got one ~10 Days ago and i have to tell you, its not that different from the HD.
its just a little bit better in every way, but always just a little
(little faster, manila little smoother, gps little faster, screen a little bigger....)
but so far everything form the hd2 works just fine on hd (exept a free 3D game, forgot the name)
The only phone i would upgrade to is the HD2..
I love this phone! It may be buggy, badly designed vanilla rom and feel like plastic in your hands after a while, but you can do anything with it! It's powerful, got a _sweet_ display and it's the best phone I've tried surfing the web with.. With Opera Mobile 10 that is.
There's no phone out there worth upgrading to yet, this phone has still got atleast 6-12 months left in my hands..
INMHO I do not think that this phone, the HTC HD, will obsoleted soon. The most I read in others forums the most I think that still the HTC HD is on the TOP. The capacitive screen seems better than the one of LEO or HTC HD2, at least for use most application or write an sms. In addition, I have seen this evening in the developers and hacking forum that a multi-touch driver has been released for our HTC HD, so we can have the best of both worlds. Even, the Android runs quite smooth in the HTC HD so you can switch between windows and Android in less than 2 minutes. I am not thinking in change my phone in this moment, I quite satisfied, but If I had not one, I will take the advantage of the new release of the LEO to get a very cheap HTC HD in the second hand market.
If HTC had sorted out the Qualcomm driver situation I'd be all over the HD2, but I'm thinking I'll skip this generation, just not enough of an upgrade for me at the moment...
HD is a great phone

Well, I have mine for about 3 months now.. ans I could have got many other phones.. but I agree with the superlatives you mentioned. skinny too, where most phones are a quarter brick in the pants.. I had to help a colleague with his Kaiser on a WM6.1 and use a stylus , only to realize and appriciate the touch HD.. Is it, eventually, become obsolete? yes, but at least not until 2011.. if I won't break it by then (flashing, or screen cracking it) I will keep it for a longer time. It simply suits my need. I am sure there will be other phoned, but until there is touch HD2 around, working in 3G US, I will keep it, flash it, test it and hope there will be enough chefs on this thread
Thank you folks for the sleepless nights you give me.. my wife is sure I have an affair, or I am into cyber sex.. until it does not stop- I will stay with the HD..

Hi BigE! Long time no speak!
Good to find you in here!! I need your help...
AS you probably remember, I am a Trinity user. With MSkip's ProPlus Ultimate 3.5 QVGA 110209 installed, I am basically at peace. It's perfect for my needs.
BUT...
Recently, I've been tempted to buy a Touch HD, disable the TouchFlo and install MSkip's ProPlus Ultimate 3.5. Is it worth it?
The bigger screen, the more powerful processor, etc, etc... Will I really notice the difference if I just use Spb MS3.5?
I know you're not a massive fan of Spb MS3.5... I use it purely as I need an appointment list on my Today Page. That's why I don't use Manila. That's why as far as I can see I would not be happy with the TouchFlo 3D on the Touch HD. Such a shame it's missing!
I look forward to your advice. Maybe you'll convince me to leave Trinity!?
Mattster.

HTC Desire ... or ... iPhone 3GS (OS 4.0).... or.... HTC HD2 ?????

I desperately need an honest advice. Currently very very confused. Contract is due for an upgrade and I've never been this much confused regarding chooosing an OS and phone. I have been a very very loyal Windows Mobile user. Used since iPAQ, HTC trinity, Cruise, TyTn II, Diamond, Touch Pro and currently Touch Pro 2. Even now, thought of leaving WinMo gives me a hiccup. However, as WM 6.5 is going to be dead soon and WM 7 doesn't look like as it would be the REAL WM thing as we ar used to. (No multitasking, no cut/copy/paste etc etc). I am thiking to change over to either Android i.e., HTC Desire or should I get an iPhone 3GS (with future OS 4 in sight)? Or stick to WM and get an HD2. (Which is not available on Orange).
I do use phone for lot of internet, documents (reading/editing), medical softwares (skyscape), navigation(tomtom).
So HTC Desire ..... or ..... iPhone 3GS (OS 4.0) ..... or HTC HD2 ??????
Please advice.
Thanks.
after playing with hd2 and iphone 3gs and seeing the 4.0os i am a happy owner of a desire, and despite couple things that could be done better i love the phone
since u came here...
desire it is....
but if you wanna be cool and participate in apple's "revolution"(present old things as new things, Lol) then go for it, oh also the huge app store...
winmo 6.5, better leave it....no future in it.....dev who are smart enough, left the platform when hd2 was confirmed not wm7 compatible...
Now, down to desire vs iphone (make ur choice)
go for whatever your heart desires.
Definitely HTC Desire.
iPhone OS 4.0 still lacks features that Android has and still ahs annoying restrictions. Plus, it's unlikely that Apple will release better hardware than the Desire has now.
The HD2 has nice hardware, but it's let down by outdated software. Windows Mobile may still be fine, but all the others are moving on, Windows Mobile doesn't.
I actually sold my HD2 for a Nexus One, and now have a Desire. I think the Desire is a better size (the HD2 is huge, VERY beautiful, but huge), though 4" would be perfect.
I'm 100% satisfied with the Desire and I'm very glad that I finally moved away from Windows Mobile. So far, I'm not missing anything, And Android is a MUCH nicer experience.
Here's a chart that compares the operating systems:

Your choice is either Android or iPhone 4G.
WM6.5 has no future (Microsoft will drop support soon and see its market place).
WP7, not attractive as its first release.
So, make a list of your needs, your daily usage, kind of apps ...
1. internet, both can do
2. documents, both can do
3. medical software, no idea
4. navigation, both can do (but Android does not have TomTom yet, it does have others like Sygic, CoPilot, etc.).
I can't really comment on the iphone 3gs because i've never owned one.
I sold my HD2 recently to upgrade to the HTC Desire.
The HD2 was not a bad phone at all, both the HD2 and HTC Desire give you a great browsing experience. The HD2 has a bigger screen dimension than the HTC Desire so it could work more efficiently, especialy when you want to use it as a Sat Nav system.
In terms of hardware specifications, both devices have the same processor but the HD2 is slightly less powerful than the HTC Desire. You can expect the Desire to do everything the HD2 can do and more whilst doing it all faster too. The android Market place (for applications) has a lot more to offer than Mobile 6.5 app stores.
Hope that helps you out.
Oh, and DO NOT GET AN IPHONE 3GS!
If you want an iPhone, wait for the next one. The Desire is much, much, much better hardware than the 3GS.
And actually, I don't think that even the next iPhone will be able to match the Desire.

Granted, what was presented yesterday is still just a "hint" of what is to come when the 4th Generation iPhone is released...IMHO...I would stick with the Desire
Among other things...the main feature that I saw introduced in 4.0 is the ability to multitask. People who have jailbroken their phone have been able to do this for a while now. It should however, been implemented 3-4 years ago.
Either way, it is your money and you know what you need the phone for

I went Mac and back. It's not that great. Especially since Windows 7 beat their crappy OS.
My thoughts about the iPhone: Look at the Desire's specs! Do you seriously think Apple will be able to match that in July?!
And even IF the hardware were the same - Android still beats iPhone OS hands down.
Seriously, don't hesitate, get your Desire now. It's hands down the best phone you can get and it won't be beaten by anything for a long, long time.... (plus, investing in the Android system now makes sense, since no other system will beat it and IF something beats the Desire, it will be another Android phone).
i was Totally jokinggg!!! lmao
i hate iPhone OS ..and im sure that Android still beats iphone os 4.0
I've got a desire, no regrets at all - Only issue I have with it is the lack of nice games - Apps are fully met for in the marketplace.
But, i doubt it will be an issue much longer, the android market will certainly grow especially with major manufacturers such as Samsung, Sony Ericson and Motoral aswell as HTC (the best manufacturer) devoting to Android.
I would recomend the Desire, its a great phone
I am choosing between the iphone 3gs and the desire as well...
Actually I like the disire more but the only thing that put me off is the lack of chinese language support which iphone has the advantage of...
Is there any app or any way that can enable me to read and write chinese with desire??
I currently have a iphone (well its on ebay now) I was waiting for the iphone 4 but got twitchy when i saw the desire so ordered got it thinking I will send it back (just wanted a play really my first android phone) I did end up sending it back but only for an exchange iphone is going. iPhone 4 will have much better spec than the 3gs but on release apple will only allow you to use a quater of its actual spec and gradually release updates to enable features ect by the time the iphone 4 is worth having the desire 2 will be out.
iPhone = old technology rebranded as apple and doubled in price
techniqically -> iphone has better multi touch than n1 and desire
iphone has apple optimized hardware
But Overall Android with desire wins the race .. it has snapdragon + More Than Double Ram
even after apple os 4.0 it will nto be able to give wat android will provide.
and multitouch can be improved in custom roms and custom kernels

before buying HTC DESIRE - can it record Videos with more than 15 FBS?? and more qust

is it possible / will be possible that the HTC DESIRE will record Video in more than 15 FBS?? maybe in HD quality ?
if no - why is that so ??
and is there any chance that it will get an landscap view on the music player?
thanks a lot...
no. Why? Cuz HTC is a tool. Lots of promises and non kept so far. Go with Samsung galaxy or anything else. Sense is overrated also since I'm already using Launcher pro.

Seems to be more than 15fps on my phone, no laggyness when recording thanks to the Snapdragon CPU

never buy a samsung phone.
Touchwiz is ****.
and its made my samsung.
touchwiz may be ****, but you will install Launcher pro on it and it is as smooth if not smoother then Sense and more useful also. Sense has only 3 stupid buttons on the home screen and the right one is completely useless btw.
Not sure what the exact recording fps really is but its in noway a smooth experience. I would guess max 20 fps. Probably less.
what about my other qustians?
should i wait to iPhone 4 or the HTC Desire is better ?
This is really your choice. I never had an Iphone so cant really compare the 2. But I'm almost sure that I will buy an Iphone next time and I'm pretty damn sure that I will never buy another HTC phone again. I may buy an Android again just not from HTC, probably something from samsung.
This part of the forum really isnt much of neutral so asking what to buy here is as good as asking HTC itself if you should buy there phone or from someone else. Same goes for the Iphone forum of course.
Don't listen to this iSheep. And don't buy and iMoneyTaker. Desire is waaay better then iPhone 4, and it's totally incomparable with iPhone 3GS. HTC does good smartphones.
If I'd be you I'd wait for galaxy s coming to your country. Or if you don't want to wait get a desire. Or if you want something for games and don't want to wait get a motorola milestone

Because sense is the only reason why I got the Desire because it was told that this runs smooth as silk. Well it does, no question about it but the right and third button is completely useless. Adding widgets on the screen? Oh really? Are we doing that like 100 times a day? This button could be much more useful if you could set it to anything else. But compared to Launcher pro which can be downloaded from the Market its totally **** and not even half as useful then LauncherPro. So it doesn't matter which phone to get as you will want Launcher pro on it anyway. The only difference is that my ROM is crapped over with this HTC sense stuff now. Useless garbage on the phone. I could get a clean rom yeah. But I dont feel like rooting just now.
The other thing is. Samsung VS Desire which runs on almost the same spaces.
Yet it can record 720p with 30 fps and it can play Divx out of the box what was only promissed by HTC and never delivered. Why? It has the spaces to support it. But no they will release another phone that will do just that or have they already with EVO? Ah crap. Desire the flag ship is actually a sunk ship.
To be honest? I would go for an iPhone 4 if I didnt have the Desire. But thats just me. For the record: i am a person that is no longer 'on one side'. I just look for the best phone out there.
Now regarding games. If games are important to you, go iPhone 4. Biggest support regarding games, best titles. With the sharp display, A4 chip and Gyroscope (or how the hell you spell it) you will get the best gaming experience. NO DISCUSSION.
Ok. If a good camera is important to you, go iPhone 4. It has one of the best cameras out there. HD recording, very smooth 30fps, very good audio, iMovie to edit your clips etc.
If notifications, multitasking are important to you: HTC Desire. The Desire also has a slightly larger screen, though the resolution is beter on the iPhone 4. Both devices show good colors.
Battery life should be much better on the iPhone 4 as well.
So yeah, my non fanboy advise is this. Look if the iPhone has everything you need. If it does, just buy it. It's a very good device and will be supported for a long time, because it has top notch hardware.
And if you choose the HTC Desire, its a good choice as well. I am very happy with the device.
Good advice there Mark ^

LMAO so your problem with sense is a button you don't like to use... I don't have these three buttons that are making your life a misery, my phone is unbranded is that the difference? are they in the middle of the screen at the bottom? I have seen peoples screenies with three screen buttons there, i don't have them
Desire records at 26fps maximum in bright light. reduced to 15fps in dull or low light.

Worth Buying?

Hello good people,
First of all, Merry Christmas,
So I'm currently looking to buy a new phone. My current phone is a i900 Omnia which is great but I really like the HD2 and DHD. I probably won't buy a new phone for a year or two so would like something which will last.
Is there any people here that had/have a HD2 and upgraded to DHD? Was it worth it? The DHD is about $250 more then HD2 here and I'm wondering if I should get it or not. I like the tweak ability of the HD2 but have never used it so I don't know how it feels whereas I tried out DHD and was very impressed. Even if I did get the HD2 I would still use Android and WinMo for GPS, unless there's something as good as iGO8 on Andoid.
Also I read some people have issues recording in 720p, freezing while recording. Is there a workaround with this issue?
I had only a little play with Android so I'm new to all this root etc...
Thank you, have a nice day
Currently, android on HD2 is not so good as DHD, and I'm sure it's not going to, so pick up your choice between winmo or android.
I myself moved from HD2 to DHD, for finger friendly UI and newly developed apps.
Another good thing is android is both dev and user friendly, no more registry tweaks or volidate cleaning! Apps gone as you want it to, also easy to get back from market.
It is not a bad phone but the battery life sux big time. You need to carry spare battery with you.

I take issue with that statement, battery life on my DHD is typically around 20+ hrs. I use my device constantly with no problem about losing power.

Thanks for replies people,
Is the touch screen much different from the HD2, as far as the sensitivity and such? When I tried the DHD I went into the messaging and tested out typing and it was just such a breeze, atm it's always a hustle without a stylus.
I'm not too worried about battery life, I won't be watching movies on the go, maybe just some gaming, web browsing and mp3 playing.
I just want a device that makes my life easier, I read that WinMo on HD2 needs ALOT of tweaks and registry changes to get running how it should be and while I am a computer whiz and love messing around with everything, I think now I just want something that works mint out of the box with great potential if I decide to try other stuff. Also apparently the SuperRAM Android builds on HD2 runs extremely well.
Are there any other good devices with 4.3" screen and 1Ghz CPU? I tried the Galaxy S but didn't like the build quality and typing seemed crap compared to DHD.
Is the DHD what I'm looking for?
Did you say Stylus?? hahahaha.. havent heard that word in a while... plus the stylus doesnt usually work on a capcitive screen..
In respect of HD2.. rightly said.. you need to do a lot of twearks,, but once done you are good to go.. or you find a good custom ROM and you are all set... With Sashmi you can install all your tweaks and the apps automatically when you flash a new ROM.. PLUS to Root (read HSPL) a WinMo phone is just too easy and straightfwd...
While going thru the rooting for DHD, goodness... i got confused.. so many times

I just upgraded to dhd from hd2 last week. I had been running mdj's dhd roms for more than a month....so the upgrade was not revolutionary. It was not a necessary upgrade except that I was flashing new roms every other day....
The pros of dhd compared to hd2
Slightly better screen...colors and sharpness
Better screen sensitivity
Better battery
Maybe a bit faster and more stable??
Better cam & video
But external speaker is very soft.
if I had known...I prob would not upgrade. Now my son is running mdj gingerbread on the hd2...lots of potential...

Yes Stylus!! LOL, Omnia has a resistive touchscreen so a stylus makes things easier. Yeah I've been doing alot of reading for HD2 and now how to flash, and I agree that it's much less confusing then rooting the DHD. The initial shock of reading how to root was overwhelming haha!
I think my only best bet now is to go and try a HD2 in a shop, but I must wait till the 5th for shops to open. If I can save 200bux for near same experience then I'm all for it. I'm a student and don't have cash just lying around lol, I mean the DHD costs more then my car!! (Had my 180sx stolen from where I study and needed something which nobody would bother stealing...POS '91 Ford Festiva)
@genting1 Will you be looking to go back to a HD2? Are you now regretting buying? Is the DHD enough?
IN that case.. an HD2 it is for you.. thats the phone I have had the longest

Dude if ur a Android fan then buy a DHD
Yes HD2 is good but its good for moding, Android on it sometimes gets stuck n then u have to put a new build on it
I had hd2 for a long time n its the best phone I had
Learnt a lot about moding on HD2
Just got my DHD 2 weeks ago n no problems so far
HTC did an OTA update that fixed all the issues
Now DHD is the best phone as far as I no
Wait for few more days get some more money
Ask few of ur friends for some maybe they can help u out with ur money problem
But don't buy HD2 if ur gonna use Android for every day use
Hope this helps
To my fellow student...
I know what it's like, the ability and situation to spend money on any device you wish...an upgrade is however, necessary. Your old phone seems quite old, judging by its manufacture date and stylus interactions. What you have to remember, as a student as well as a person, is what device will serve your needs more? Do you want a more multimedia-oriented phone or a business phone? What will consume less time and work out of the box? Right now, it is a very critical time for me. I have seven exams in January alone. If you are in a situation even a fraction of what i'm in....well you get the point. I previously owned the HD2 for the best of a year before "upgrading" to a Desire HD. I would say that Windows Mobile, although an extremely flexible OS that allows for many tweaks and customisations, is an extremely old and "outdated" OS...it requires a dedicated owner and a lot of time to get it the way YOU want it. Also, you will get into a habit of regularly flashing custom roms and trying out another Android build etc. I believe that it is a phone for people who wish to experiment and realise the potential of a device.
On the other hand, you have a Desire HD. I would see it as an entertainment class phone. It has the same size screen as my old HD2, but more vibrant colours. The speakers are low and softer in volume, although who ever uses phone speakers to listen to music? As students and on the train and in lessons, we use our phones to listen to OUR choice of music in privacy and as a form of time-passing and relaxation. The Desire HD is a valuable music player, as it reproduces sounds far better than my HD2, thanks to SRS and Dolby sound effect algorithms. It is quite adept at playing multimedia, and has 720p capture AND playback abilites. There is also an 8mp camera sensor, and nice applications.
Personally, I believe a Desire HD will be more suited to you. It is a newer model with more powerful/updated hardware. From what I assume, if you were to purchase a HD2, primarily you would use it for Android on a daily basis and GPS navigation within Windows? If that is so, i'd suggest going for a Desire HD. I have one, and it is flawless. Android on the HD2 will never be on the level of a Desire HD. It natively runs the OS, and the device is fully stable. Booting into Android on a HD2 and back and forth to Windows will take at least a minute either way. It's up to you in the end, but I advise you go for a Desire HD. Although it's more expensive, it's all the more appealing and filling. Thus you will have the latest device, best hardware, a smooth OS experiance and the ability to download programs from the Market at the swipe of a finger. As a side note, if you want another device recommendation, it would be a HD7. Rumours have it that it is selling for £414.00 on Amazon and less on Ebay! In the end, the choice falls to you. I hope i've clarified the situation for you
(And in case you are wondering, no I don't regret getting a Desire HD. The experiance, smoothness and perfection alone are enough to make me happy and show off my device)
I won't even look at WP7 until it matures more and see how it turns out, seems too limited too me and I don't think I will be happy with it.
I'm not a fanboy of either OS but I do feel WinMo is getting old and customizing is essential to get the most out of it. I haven't had too much interest in Android until recently when I was researching more about it and it has really grown on me.
I've been keen for a HD2 for months and months simply to try Android without completely moving to a full Android device but that was before I knew more about Android and it seems like it's a great OS. Definitely "future proof" where developers will spend time on it so new software will always be available, unlike WinMo.
Better hardware is a lot what I've been thinking about, so why not right, it would be time for once to own the best right NOW.
But anyway, I think I've been convinced and I'm gona break my own "rule" ($400 max for a phone, in the past anyway lol) and thank you all for your time to help me out, I look forward to owning a Desire HD
So first thing I should do with the phone is get S-OFF and flash Buzz 1.0.6 kernel and then update to latest version? Or get S-OFF, update and then change kernel?
I'd suggest S-off, then flashing Android Revolution HD (either latest one for android 2.2.1) or Android Revolution 1.9.3 for android 2.2...real difference is slightly faster IO speeds..but with latest rom you can't flash a custom kernel...yet! You can also try Leedroid, and try out kamma's kernel, although I have gps problems with this combination. Hope I helped!

We do see the wildfire 2 will mostly hawe a slightly more powerful CPU a GPU and a better screen resoliution. So waht do you whink if HTC will roll out the Wildfire 2 will you consider buying it over your Wildfire?
If you selected the option Other please state why?
Overtime the spec will getting better, many phone in the market with the same price has better spec than Wildfire now, but I think after my phone I'll choose a higher-end phone :_
I'm keeping my wildfire for a while, when I do buy a new phone I'm getting a top-of-the-line one
hopefully a nexus or something
I think many user choose the way: buy one mid-end to get into Android and then pick a higher-end, like me .
Waiting for some 2-core processor this year or maybe next
While I won't be upgrading so soon, as I stated in another thread, the wildfire 2 is everything the wildfire 1 should have been in the first place...

I'm missing something here. My first smartphone was a Samsung Galaxy S. Just after, I became curious about the HTC Desire but couldn't bring myself to get one given I'd just bought the Galaxy S. Then the Nexus S came out and I had to have one of those, so I got it. Gingerbread is nice but I was still curious about HTC Sense. So I decided to buy a cheap Wildfire on eBay. After a while I realised HTC Sense was rubbish and was about to go back to the Nexus S (both it and the Galaxy S are still in my top drawer) when I stumbled on CyanogenMod. I've flashed a number of different ROMs since then and I can't put my Wildfire down.
I know I've got two high-end smartphones but I love my Wildfire so much that I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Please, someone tell me why I should be using the Galaxy or the Nexus as I'm worried I'm actually missing out on something.

Indeed I chose the wildfire to see what android was about and it hasn't disappointed, even makes me think why I stuck with Nokia for so long.
As for wildfire 2 I think I'll be skipping it too and go for a higher spec cos the specs are still not impressive to turn experienced users head.
One with front facing camera, something missing on most android phones but present even in cheap Nokia models, would be nice.

I am very pleased with my Wildfire. It delivered more then I expected as instapper Android phone. The next purchase will be a higher end phone with at lest 2gpu/cpu. But for now I am more than happy with my current phone.
I am thinking of getting a HTC desire.
Wildfire 2 is exactly what 1 should have been, a smartphone without GPU was probably the biggest weakness to me. Nevertheless, it is still an excellent phone for those with a budget and want to try out Android.

Have you tried flashing ROM's and experimenting with your other phones? For me, another reason why I prefer the Wildfire is because of its friendly size and handling capabilities, and, comparatively easy pocketability, which is certainly missing from the higher end devices with their 4"+ screens.
Also, I would think that the UI and all is smoother on the top end phones, and, their app and game support is way more enhanced than on the Wildifre. Cant really comment on the smoothness part because havent used one of them ever.
Off Topic, Another thing I fail to understand is why companies think that whoever wants a powerhouse of a phone must grab a huge one with as graceful dimensions as a brick. I would love to see one day 1 GHz Processors, Adreno 205's, 768 MB RAM's etc on a 3.2 - 3.5" screened device. Handling such huge phones is a pain, especially in crowded areas...

Read my mind. Even right now, I wanted to upgrade to a Defy instead of a Desire. Since the Defy is roughly the size of our Wildfire, but the turn off there is that I got spoiled with WF ROMS, Defy has a few, and the Desire a ton.I want the option to use my phone and reach every inch of the screen with one hand. For this I'd still consider the WF 2 if nothing else competes at it's size
Like most people I got the Wildfire as a cheap Android phone to see what it was like after using Nokia for ages. There will probably be a lot of cheaper phones on the market soon after the success of the Wildfire and the San Francisco, even Apple are considering an iPhone of reduced size to compete with the android success
http://www.pcworld.com/article/219501/iphone_nano_rumors_return.html
Have a look at that.

As to smoothness, I can say that CM7 on my Wildfire is slightly choppier than the factory Gingerbread on my Nexis S but not enough to be annoying and I haven't noticed any difference in app start up times.
Wildpuzzle is a different matter. There has been no noticeable difference between Wildpuzzle on my Wildfire and Froyo on my Galaxy S. It really has been that good that I'm toying with the idea of going back to it as CM7 doesn't seem to want to agree with me. I just wish I could get hold of a QVGA version of Swype!
On all devices video playback is no different and I don't play games so I can't comment.
I agree with you about good things in small packages. I've also heard Samsung are coming out next month with a smaller version of the Galaxy S but I haven't seen any specs.

It`s nice to see that I`m not the only one that thinks a 4.0 inch screen is too big.
This is one of the reasons I bought the Wildfire, it was the smallest at that time, and still is. Well, now there are phones like the Samsung i5500, but damn, 2 mp camera is so 2004.
I my self wanted the wildfire as my first Android device(like most of you ). But now when MWc 2011 has started im waiting for price drop's of the older phones like the original Desire or something else Thinking is it a good idea to go for a Milestone 2? Looked at their forums and i saw just a few ROM's.
If root is so hard on my wildfire I probably not going to buy another HTC at all.
I'm just anoyed about companies trying to tell me what I can do with their device.
Cause this is how it is now, not mine but theirs.

It is the same with all companies, atleast with what I have seen,
Sony - Controls everything you do on the PS3. Mod it, and you lose ability to even go online, and if you do, they have the ability to automatically install stuff you dont authorize.
Apple - Not really required to specify it, do we?
Nokia - Only the initial Symbian sets were truly open, where you could mod the heck out of it. Unfortunately, it was not so customizable as Android. With the later ones, it had to be "hacked" (As in rooted), to allow modifications, which depended on the firmware.
Can't comment on others simply because I don't own them.
Lastly, the Wildfire is too "unimportant" a device for major teams to work on, when compared to, say, Apple's iDevices. Hence, finding exploits for iDevices may take a week, and the same may take months for the Wildfire. Unfortunately, thats the way the hierarchy exists.
i'd like to have the new screen on my actual wildfire..
i don't want to change it..
the next purchase will be a more powerful
