What is different now to expect a change?
And whatever you have read, it was never a web safe color issue.
turns out I was wrong, just under a very yellow light at my inlaw's.
I would be interested to know the evidence held that this is not a websafe colour issue though. I strongly believe it is for good reason.
Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
Well, usually those who claims something (in this case you) should give proof, but I can tell you web safe was issue way back with ancient 8 bit (256 color) browsers, which were not capable of displaying all colors, so if you give them non safe color they have to use nearest one and could fail. Desire is capable of displaying millions of colors, and Gmail application is not even web browser, it does not interpret graphics downloaded from web. Content of mail is downloaded, but graphic is built into program.
It could be similar problem, since apparently some applications in Android 2.1 use 16 bit colors, so when extrapolating 24 bits to 16 bits errors occurs. In any case it is not a fault of using wrong color, but of bad programming which is not capable displaying full 24 bits.
you are kind of right, desire however is not genuinely capable of millions of colours. because of its pentiled display each RG or BG pixel is 10 bit with the red or blue subpixel being twice the size of the green subpixels. it deals with this rather cleverly but its not perfect.
the colour used in the gmail app is grey but it is in the red (pink) index and is slightly closer to the next 10 bit pink than it is to the grey.
the result of these 10 bit pixels and the grey used in the gmail app is a pink hue on the supposedly grey read messages. its not exactly a websafe issue but if it were a websafe color (8 bit) the pinkness would not be visible.
Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
I am not sure I understand you correctly. What do you mean by RG/BG couple being 10 bit? Each R/G/B sub pixel is (to my knowledge) independently addressable by 8 bits. Which give us 16 bits per pixel, but 24 bit information is retained (most of it) by extrapolating remaining 8 bits with surrounding pixels.
Could you link to some web page explaining 10 bits per pixel for Desire?
I don't want to go too much into bits because there is simpler explanation. Same grays can be correctly displayed in other applications on same display. That proves it is not a display issue, but of those applications, don't you agree?.
There is already topic for this, so maybe better to continue there:

Hi,
Anyone notice that the Android stock browser produce bad image quality when zoomed in images?
Is it possible to change the quality of showing images? I can imagine that I might need to lower the quality on 3G, but on WiFi I want quite high.
Before I got this phone, I was thinking that its 3.7" screen will be superb on viewing images on the web ... Think sites like *you-know*
Unfortunately it is not.
Opera Mini has options to choose image quality but unfortunately you cant zoom in that much.
Things like what? I'm not sure I know what you're talking about...
No, the 3D gallery that you download manually does not support full colour images - however I believe the one off the market might when available
this has been discussed at length already. do search before posting.
data is compressed when browsing and results in degradation of jpg images.
this should not happen on WiFi and doesn't on my desire. depends how far you are zooming in I suppose.
anoyingly you see this effect if using the phone as a modem and viewing websites on your pc too.
if you are seeing this effect when connected to WiFi it is a different issue though. can you try to describe what it is about the images that is not right.
Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
I think I remember that thread, but that was a discussion about viewing "YouTube" using YouTube player app.
Are you saying that the stock web browser does this as well? I guess so ...
@marksyzm: Try http://www.playboy.com ... then zoom in to one of the pictures. It is kinda blurry ...
At some websites, images are even worse on quality.
And I am using WiFi at full speed.
I wish there is an option to set the image quality like in the Opera Mini.
PS: Anyone has an iPhone? Is this also happening on the Safari browser?

When I click your link it takes me to a WAP enabled version of the site, and the pictures there are blurry. But at the bottom there's a link to the full site and there the pictures look fine. You can set your phone to always use the full version of websites in the browser settings
Porn on your mobile... jeez.
Lol...
Try full web version of Facebook...
And see the profile photo at the top left.
Very blurry
Yes this has been discussed. Reload the webpage and you'll get hi Res images.
I've tried loading a webpage on 3G and then on wifi, no difference, although they only become blurry when zoomed a lot, so it doesn't bother me
I don't want to upset anyone but please search. we really are having the same conversations every other week.

Posted before this in a weeks old thread about it with no resolve to date. Like checking xtremesystems.org forums right now with the latest screenshots of AMD Thuban posted... some display fine, most utter junk -- blocky, pixelated -- that I can't makeout any details from. Same with any online image through opera or the stock browser using a very good WiFi connection. refreshing/rebooting doesn't change squat, its been like this since late March.

Not sure which page your looking at but everything on the frontpage of xtremesystems.org looks fine.
I`ve found if i`m browsing using mobile networks the initial page load the images are low quality, then a reload brings in the higher detailed version.
If i`m browsing on wifi I get the high detailed version straight away.
Ok just checked image quality on few different web pages over WiFi, picture is superb
So it only compresses images while you are on WiFi, which is good, but still I would like to see option for this

Image size
N.1: as suggested above this has been discussed in other threads, but no one pointed to other threads, and I can't find a better thread than this.
N.2: as said above and I've just tested there is no difference with wifi on/off, stock/other browser, first load/reload.
But I can see a difference about those two images
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...&postcount=891
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...&postcount=898
the first thread shows fine, on my computer the same way as on my mobile.
The second has bigger images (800KB vs 100KB) and on my mobile they are indeed blurry and not-readable.
So does image size have an impact on quality ? And since it happens on any browser / network, does anybody have an idea where this happens on the download process ?
[EDIT] code.google issue 6021 link http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=6021
I thought I was getting something that at least could compete with the LED on my Epic 4G, but this doesn't even come close. Especially when you consider we were told that the LED would light up special colors indicating what type of notification we were getting.
1. I haven't seen such functionality yet - a google voicemail, an email, a gmail, a text message, and anything else I've ever gotten for a notification all light up that multi-hued "white" color.
2. The damn thing "lights" only about .5 seconds out of every 7, so the odds of me seeing it are not good at ALL if I merely glance at it. I have to deliberately look at my phone for a good 5-7 seconds to make sure I'm not seeing a "light" that's merely not lit currently.
3. Why no light at all for charge condition? Every other Samsung Galaxy device I've ever used had this functionality. Red for charging, blue for fully charged. Absolutely zippy here for the Nexus...
WTF google, this thing might as well not exist
I agree that google should have put in some controls so we can control how and what color the light blinks but there is an app called light flow in the market that will allow us to do that. It's not perfect right now and it has some bugs it looks like working with android 4.0 but it should be fixed soon hopefully and it will work great.
Patience amigo. Perfection takes time.

I agree . I dont even get a flashing light when i have a missed call (unless i have done something to my settings) and as you say, i have only seen the white colour light....more or less useless for me as well !
I also think it should came built in.
Untill then download "Light Flow". All your wishes come true.
#2 From your list seems to be an obnoxious problem. Maybe someone will release an app that allows you to configure how frequent it blinks. Otherwise, once every 7 seconds is indeed pretty useless...
I find it funny how you guys are actually *****ing about this. Who here thinks a custom rom will change all of your that? I don't know about you but I didn't buy a nexus device to keep it stock. That's kind of like going to the red light district in Amsterdam and not getting laid.... just saying

You don't have to change the ROM if you don't whant. Only download "Light Flow". Or another similar app that does the same.
But I undersand that this is a basis thing of the O.S and for me it's trange that doesn't have it built in.
Less panoramic camera, face unblock, and more usful things like changing options of the LED.
Same exact story for Nexus One. Just ***** in the Google forum if there is one until they unlock the feature. In the meantime hope CM or someone like lilhermit unlock this feature for us like they did before.
It's the second best feature on this phone, hardware wise. The screen being one. Try using a Nexus S and an iPhone for the better part of this year. Then you'll understand how wonderful that little light actually is.
Everything else will come in time.
Third party apps guys.
Handscent for SMS...allows full customization of light colors and frequency...right down the the contact level.
Touchdown for emails....for customization of light colors.
Those are the only two I care about, but likely there are 3rd party apps for all of your needs.
Using the MoDaCo Rom and Trackball Alert.... This is one of my favorite things on this phone!!! Gmail>red Twitter> yellow SMS>Green Calls>orange I love knowing if its something important or just a tweet from some random blog
+1 for Light Flow. It's a brilliant app, have it set up to do about six different colours here depending on what notifications I get.
You weren't shown the phone having different colored leds out of the box. The Droid life video showing that was using the app light flow.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Does LED Me Know work on the GN? Tried it once on my Desire Z, I think the app has an option to change led colors and intervals.
As many have said, Lightflow will solve your problems. I'm not a fan of trackball alert that's included in Modaco's custom roms. You have to buy the pro version of trackball alert to get the same features as lightflow, and lightflow is free.
I do agree that colored alerts should have been included from the start, but after all, the GNex is a developer phone, so maybe Google realised it would be hacked in almost immediately so they didn't bother.
Not much of an excuse, but hey....
Dont forget about NO LED. Great program and works great with this phone.
I uninstalled Lightflow, too many "false alerts" for me. It would work, but i'd often find it stuck flashing white for no reason (no active notifications or unread mails/sms etc). I reboot was needed to clear it.
The tweetdeck app does flash the LED yellow without any extra faffing, which is nice. But yeah, more options would be nice.
Why would you use NO LED when you have an LED?
Any way to get a custom color in light flow for google voice?
On my jailbroken iphone I have an app installed called f.lux that automatically warms up the screen/gives the screen a more yellow colour cast. It makes this adjustment at specified times of the day to match the primarily incandescent light sources that exist at night.
Does anyone know of a similar app for my brand new nexus? All suggestions welcome.
...Mike
That would be ...awesome

Hey,
I recently bought the Nexus 7 v2.
There is something I'm not sure to understand. On the official website it says: 1920x1200
But if I go there http://www.whatismyscreenresolution.com/ then it says 600x912
I didn't install new rom.
Is that normal ?
Does the resolution change depending of the application ?
Thanks,
Dalf
ps: my brother has installed a rom on his nexus 7 and the resolution is: 800*1232
Pps sorry for double post
I got 1920×1104 from mine. Given that the soft keys take up some real estate, that sounds about right.
I got 1200 x 1920

I think that website only measures the resolution of the browser window. I got 600x912 as well.
Just tried it in portrait and got 1200×1824. Again considering the soft keys, that sounds right...

<•••• 1200 x 1920 per AOSP Browser.
From Anandtech: "Brian was quick to point out that a major advantage of the Android platform is in its flexible resolution handling. The 1920 x 1200 panel presents itself as a 960 x 600 panel to web pages in Chrome, while other apps can use every last pixel for unique content (e.g. games)."
It is probably loading up a mobile page and the browser is telling the site 960x600.
I noticed this too on all devices. The browser reports half resolution. When I build Mobile web apps, I typically have to do 960x600 and it properly formats across most browsers I've tried. Is weird though but again I think the browsers are telling the site that it's max is half so a properly coded site will send over a customized layout more suited for tablets.
FF reports the correct dimensions of 1200×1824 or 1920×1104 depending on the orientation, and accounting for the nav buttons.
This is a pretty sad state when Google has to resort to such tricks as reporting half resolution to make up for extremely poor web developers. Anyone using pixel measurements for any web or app development clearly doesn't know what they are doing. This highlights this issue perfectly. Web browsers are aware of the actual DPI of the screen and will render pages accordingly, so long as the specifications use proper dynamic sizes. I really hate browsing some mobile sites on my Nexus 7. They are ridiculously huge to the point of being unusable!

Web developing is all about pixel measurements. And its used for displaying various CSS profiles. Most CSS tablet mode themes are built around a 960 width. It isn't for poor web developers, it is for GOOD web developers that create a tablet CSS theme. A good developer will have various styles for mobile, tablet, full, and super wide.
If the browser reports 1200 or 1920 resolution width, it would throw it into full site mode. Chrome does this so it can default to the best mode designed for your device and giving you the option for full site options in the menu.
Specially developed tablet friendly sites usually use less advertisements and finger friendly controls.
This is smart on Googles behave.

You could not be more wrong, this is the problem! You absolutely should not be making assumptions about a device based on it's screen resolution. Multiple CSS profiles is very good indeed, but they must be based on the physical dimensions of the screen. If it's 7-10", then tablet, 3-5" mobile, etc. These measurements are dependent on the screen DPI and have nothing to do with the physical pixel resolution, nor should they. Ever. This is all Microsoft's fault for building an OS and browser that rendered at 96 DPI regardless of the physical screen, and tricked generations of computer users into thinking higher resolution means smaller text/UI. Android's doing a great job at fixing that, but unfortunately many web developers are still way behind and need to catch up. Granted, I've been making this same argument for almost 10 years now. People just refuse to learn!
out-of-box, fully updated with chrome browser: 960x552 landscape. 600x912 portrait.
certainly doesnt look that low, so i'd say a chrome issue.
Received the GPE yesterday. Also have the Nexus 7.2, I can return either tablet.
The screen size of the GPE is an immense upgrade. My old eyes or whatever, but if a web page or magazine doesn't allow zoom I have to work to read on the 7. Nowhere near an issue on the GPE.
Everything else, though, is a definite downgrade.
Before I decide which tab to keep, are there are apps/tweaks for the GPE that might improve a couple of things:
display: Whites are "dingy" with a yellowish cast. I have screen adjuster installed. Adding blue helps. But it only allows for adding color. Is there an app that has the color slide set in the middle as opposed to at the zero point so I can subtract as well as intensify one of the colors??
Also, it's pretty dim. Is there a way change the sensitivity of the auto brightness, ie so that at a given ambient light it sets the screen brighter than stock?
scrolling: It is a little more "ratchety". Odd, since it's the 600 v 400 processor in the 7. I have 4.4.2 installed. Would rooting help even if I don't use a custom ROM (the 7 is rooted but running stock)?

1. The display is what it is. I have been waiting for a higher resolution 8 inch tablet for over two years. This is the first and probably will be by itsself for a long time, others would have been released by now for the holiday season. This is not to excuse LG for skimping out on the display, they make the retina displays for MacBook Pros and iPads for goodness sake. However, I am going to keep it over my Nexus 7 2013 because the size of the display is worth the drawbacks for me.
2. I assume you mean scrolling in Chrome. Beats me why it is always jerky, has been for years. Good news is that the AOSP browser is now in Google Play without needing root. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=me.android.browser
Install it and you will have a much smoother experience.

You can try Lux Auto Brightness or a similar app.
The auto-brightness on LG devices seems to work differently than on other Android devices. The brightness slider still has an effect when auto-brightness is checked. I don't know whether the value chosen with the slide acts a a max level or if it provides some kind of "base" for the auto-brightness algorithm to work from. But if the slider level is set low turning on auto-brightness won't make the screen as bright as it will be with the slider at a higher value and auto-brightness on.
Trickster is great if you have root

There are some kinks that need ironing out but it's plenty stable to be used as my daily.

My display is pretty good. the auto-brightness is too dark but it is on every device I've ever used, so that's not really an issue for me.
Scrolling is as good or better than any Nexus 7 2013 model I've seen. I think the Ars and Verge reviews said basically the same thing. Also, the Nexus 7 is not a snapdragon 400. It's an S4 Pro. The specific S4 Pro in the Nexus 7 is a 1.5 ghz quad core krait 300 with a ddr3 memory controller instead of being a 1.7 ghz quad core krait 300 with a dual channel ddr2 memory controller in the Snapdragon 600 in the G pad. The difference is completely negligible.

Hey, I WAS an apple fanboy. Since 1994. Couildn't wait for the iphone to get to my city. Ran right over and "up"graded. Having worked with Android for a couple of years by then it was obvious in a day and a half how awful the interface was. My new droid was in hand immediately and I have recruited iOS'ers since. Do you know most are not aware of the "direct call" widget we have that they don't? That's just the most obvious and ridiculous demonstration of where iOS has gone with their Gates'ian control of their ecosystem.
That said, thanks for the pointer. My difficulty is with google Newsstand. The magazines I read don't allow zoom.
But the LG is on its way back. And I am very happy with my choice.....

I'll give it a try..... It may be the magazines themselves, because when I adjust the Newsstand font size nothing happens to them. There's also a general setting for font size. That didn't help either.

The nexus 7 has the snapdragon 600 too just down clocked to 1.5ghz so they advertise it as the s4 pro

You're welcome and if you mean Google Play Magazine then if none of the 3 choices of font sizes are good for you the solution is Xposed + App Settings (so you can change the DPI for that app only).

I can't locate xposed in the play store......

Screen dimness compared to the N7 is a complaint of mine as well. Wish it was brighter throughout the range.
Also rooting in and of itself will do nothing to affect device performance and speed, it simply opens the door to allow to do software mods in the future that may improve speed. 1

Can someone report if the IR blaster on the GPE 8.3 works? I'm on the fence of buying it but I still can't seem to find an answer

It's not very useful on the regular G Pad, because it only supports a very small number of devices. I don't think it works at all on the GPE version, so far. If the IR capability is your main reason for buying the G Pad, better get another tablet. Or else get a Harmony Remote.
