Ask because I saw on another site a display of all the notations that the Desire has and there was a little insignia for 3G. Never seen it myself. All I get are bars and H. So what does this mean?

All you get is H? Consider yourself lucky. That means you're running on 3.5G aka HSDPA which is faster than regular 3G.
H = HSDPA - which is 3G on steroids.

My ignorance is clearly great. Declared a virgin.
So why don't I ever see the little 3G tag even when I am not H? Point being I get H and bars or bare bars but bars never have other notations than H
i get H or 3G or rarely G, it just shows whats the best available.
if it displays no symbol do you still have internet access?
oh and if you are connected to wifi it won't show H or anything, so maybe your only ever on HSDPA or wifi

You'll see the bare bars when there's no data session going on. If you just see H when you're using data, you're skipping the 3G stage where the handset tries to negotiate HSPA with the tower.. which is awesome, BTW. You'll see the 3G sooner or later when the network is or you're getting a poor-er signal.
GENERALLY, where there is a 3G signal, there is also a H signal, your smartphone will pick the better when it can. I have only ever seen my desire go to 3G once.

this could be a coincidence but the other day I put my phone into airplane mode for a while and then switched back to normal mode.
ever since I have had solid hsdpa signal at home which was always sketchy before.
I realise TM may have fixed/upgraded an antenna or added a new one but it seems such a big coincidence.

Is your Desire still running the Orange ROM? I had the same little 3G+ logo on mine until I flashed the generic ROM on and now it displays the H rather than 3G+.
Nexus displays 3G for HSDPA connections if you're on the stock ROM. It doesn't mean you're not connected at the higher speed - if you goto the phone status it'll tell you exactly what you're connected at.
Some of the custom Nexus ROM's add "H" for HSDPA, it looks like the Desire shows the same on some ROM's but maybe not others.
Best bet to check exactly what speed you're connected at is via phone status.
Ah - this answers one of my questions then.
I had thought my 3G didn't work, because I got "H" all the time.
Sounds like it's just coz my phone jumps to H...
I can't recall EVER seeing a 3G symbol. Always just G or H or nothing...

Yea i know of the upgrade. Dident think it would change the bars.
It's purely cosmetic anyways, I wouldn't worry too much about it. In fact, the setting can be changed in one or more of the tweak utilities. The Tilt 2 has the opposite issue. The stock ROM only shows 3G instead of H.
I'm on AT&T and I get the H all the time. I don't really notice any speed difference though.

well I jusr installed the new radio and I see no difference. I still show "h" sometimes and 3g other times. when I tether and use speedtest.net I still can't get over 1Mbps.

Doesnt the H has nothing to do with the radio rom?? it's just in what area you are where the signal is the strongest.. 3G, Hdspa, or Gprs.. In the stupid little pesantville i live i often get only 'G' for gprs,, i only get 3g in the big cities..
you just have 'H' because theres no strong 3G signal in your area

Being in your shoes I would be happy to see H instead of 3G as it is 3.5G rather than 3G ;-)
H stands for the latest standard HSPA (where HSDPA --> High Speed Download & HSUPA --> HS Upload) while 3G is a generic High Speed network of 3rd generation.
With 3.5G one is getting up to 7.2Mbit per second Download and up to 2.4Mbit per second Upload while with 3G it is well below 1Mbit per second in both cases.
Of course, it is UP TO and depends on particular implementation...

there was an article last week about tmobile upgrading thier network to hspa, theoreticle 7.2Mbps. with the rom that came with my tmo tp2, i never showed the "h", when i went to the energyb rom series, i was often showing an "h" but there was no differance in my speed. it is clear to me that the tmo hspa 7.2 upgrade has not hit here in seattle yet. i just upgraded my radio as i saw that someone in a previous post has the official tmo 6.5 upgrade and he was gettting 4mbps.
i sure do hope that tmo gets this working in seattle soon...
Sorry, this doesn't mean anything usually. If you are running non-stock (aka flashed) then most likely it just is the ROM that changes the 3G to H. I am on ATT and that just is what took place of the 3G icon. It doesn't mean anything else. Now, on stock ROM's it could.
Had my Desire for a while now, and I'm just wondering why my internet connection jumps from 'H' straight down to 'G', seemingly bypassing 3G.
Anyone else got this happening?
this happens to me but only when im on a train which is understandable

That's because T-Mobile never bothered to implement EDGE on their network. As far as I'm aware, only O2 and Orange have implemented EDGE, and O2 only did it because of the original iPhone 2G contract.

No what I mean though, is fine, I'll be getting GPRS signal pretty much anywhere I go, and should be getting H signal in city's and largely populated areas, which I do (while it is pretty flakey). But inbetween those gaps, shouldn't I be getting 3G signal, in the areas with no H?
At the moment if I have no HSPA it goes straight to G, just completely missing the 3G areas, is this normal?

This is common problem with the Desire. Try dialling *#*#4636#*#* and then changing from wcdma preferred GSM auto (PRL). It's helped for a few people, including myself. A search will dig up a few useful threads

This. As long as you are not on an internet package that doesn't allow HSDPA then you should only see the H symbol, not 3G, when in range. Before I contacted T-mobile I was stuck on their normal Web 'n' Walk that restricted the speed so I was only ever seeing 3G. After being upgraded to the W 'n' W Plus I never see 3G anymore flick between H and G depending on my signal.

Sorry, but that is incorrect.
I'm on T-Mobile, and I regular see G, 3G, and H depending on where I am.
Right now, my phone is sitting on my desk in my office and is showing 3G. If I run a speed test, it immediately jumps to H and I get results of 1877kbps down and 476kbps up, so I'm definitely provisioned for HSDPA.
So, you can be correctly provisioned for HSDPA and still see the 3G symbol, though it would appear that this will jump to H pretty much as soon as you start using data.

HSDPA (H) is a lot faster than 3G, but not all mobile masts have the right equipment to use it. If an HSDPA cell is available on a mast then your phone will only show H and never 3G. However, if the mast is not configured for HSDPA it will show 3G.
If a handset is connected using 3G/HSDPA and the signal is weak/lost it will drop down to 2G(G)/EDGE.
Most issues people have with the handset dropping down to 2G will be coverage/signal related. Best thing to do is try it in another area. If the connection is stable in any other place you are in then there is nothing wrong with the handset.

HSDPA is data-only so the handset will show 3G if not using data. As soon as a data connection is established/requested it will change to HSDPA (H) if it is available. 3G is for voice/texts and also data if no HSDPA is available.

I only get H/G here in the UK, but a recent trip to Paris had me only on E. It's dependant on what the carrier is using.

Bull****... It is like Edge and Gprs, Edge is a "better" version of the normal Gprs, you get >Edge where ever Edge is available, otherwise normal Gprs.
Same to HSDPA and 3G (umts) thats why i get mostly 3G here and HSDPA not that often, because my Provider has bad availability of HSDPA.
I was just wondering if there was an app that showed when I was actully on HSPA+ or just 3G cause as far as I can tell its either H, E or G. I've yet to see 3G. Id like to be able to see without going to settings, about phone, status. Cause I want to run speed tests on HSPA+.

I think if you go to phone status. You would be connected under umts which would be 3g or hspa as hspa+ but hspa n umts its technically the same thing. It never shows hspa+ even though I live within the coverage with hspa+

When in a HSPA+ area your phone should show HSDPA under About Phone>Status>Mobile Network Type. The 'H' indicator will show no matter what 3G network you're connected to. I'm assuming T-Mobile did this to avoid confusion between 3G and HSPA+ which is technically still 3G.

I have been using Netswidget. It seems to do the job, possibly a little buggy still at times. But it does show edge, umts and hsdpa on it. I even saw gprs the other day for a brief moment out in the sticks. But it seems to work fine for me.
I have mobile signal widget. Changes icon for edge, 3g, and hspa.

In fact, our region is listed as 4G speeds on TMobile website... McLean VA.

Just because you are listed on the coverage map as being in the HSPA+ area the towers might not be actally all set up for the top speeds. I live in Massachusetts in a suburb of Boston where we are on the coverage map as being in HSPA+ area but the next town over is ony getting top speeds of around 950 kbps download. The network has not been stretched out to it's maximum yet, you will be getting your speed probably very soon. It is still very spotty. This has been my findings in the Boston area. One town in HSPA+ will get 750 MBPS download (very fast) and just a short distance away will only get top speeds of only 950 kbps (not bad) It will get better soon.

Im also in VA and dont see "4g speeds" but it depends on certain areas just because your in "4g" area doesnt mean your going to see it, like if your inside in a building, or just in a bad coverage area. Ive actually did a speedtest under 2 different cell towers and the most I ever got was 5down. They say the g2 is capable of doing like 14, but I dont think anyone is ever going to get that I would say 10 the most.
In the phone manual it shows the different types of networks the phone would show. This G, E, H, and H+. It wont show 3g because H is the same as 3g and H+ is "4g".

Anyone know what the "G" means in the connection status area where one normally sees "3G" or "E"? I don't see it often, and when I do it seems to be in areas with weak 3G coverage. However, I know I am not mistaken, it is just "G", no "3G", just "G." Also, I never see the "H" that some report in the connection status area, even though I am in an area where HSDPA+ is active. I know I cannot get HSDPA+ speeds on the Slide, but I consistently get 3-4 Mbps down and 1-2 Mbps up (D.C. metro).
G is for GPRS which is even slower than edge. It's what I live with constantly here in Barbados.

Youre probably not going to see an H if you have stock, but im surprised you havent figured out that the 3-4 mbps is hspa+ that you are connected with.

Well, I have figured out that the 3-4 Mbps is HSPA+. What I meant was that I know there is HSPA+ in my area, and it helps overall speed, regardless of whether the phone is capable of it or not. The Slide hardware does not do HSPA+. I still thought the H would show up for HSPA connections whether HSPA+ or not. Guess not though if you are saying stock ROM's won't show it, since that is what I run, completely stock.
Yeah the only two phones capable of HSPA+ are the G2 and the mt4g. 3-4 mbps is HSPA. If you were connected to HSPA+ it would be more around 7-10 mbps, if I remember correctly. The only stock rom I've seen an H in is the G2's, but both the G1 and the G2 have had fairly stock android roms, not heavily modified sense, its kind of the style of those phones.
well i have just received my new m8, great phone, but my data speed is very poor!! i am only getting H
i am on EE we do have 4g in my area, and my old iphone 5 connected at 3g no problem..

not displeased with the icon, they could put a flying pig on the display and it wouldnt bother me.
i was just assuming that i was getting the lower data speed ( less than 3g) but i have now done a speed test ( dont know why i didnt do it earlier)
and i am geting just under 5mbps.
what does the H indicate?

G stands for GPRS and is the slowest standard, used in the GSM network (2G).
E is an extension of GPRS, it is called EDGE and it is correspondingly a little faster, but still uses the old GSM network (2G).
3G stands for UMTS and is the successor to the GSM network and is faster.
H and H+ stand for HSPA and HSPA+. Both use the UMTS network, where H is faster than 3G and H+ is faster than H.
4G stands for LTE and is the fastest.
