Multitouch broken with swype - Desire General

I dont know if this is an issue with all other inputs but when i use swype it appears to break multitouch.
Installed swype and used it as my default. I then noticed that the browser pinch-zoom doesnt work, and again with the sense home app pinch. When i did pinch or use two fingers on the home app it opened the add sidget menu, as if i long pressed. also i tried the multitouch paint app and two finger stroke drew nothing. It all fixed itself after i used the htc touch input as default.
Is there a newer version of swype that fixes this or is it a HTC problem?
swype version: 5228 or 1.16.12.5228

This is a known issue. The pinch to zoom gesture seems to be something that's part of the pre-installed keyboards rather than the OS itself, so selecting a different one loses you the gesture.

NO, it's not that the pinch-to-zoom is built into the HTC keyboard, it's that for some reason changing the input mechanism disables it. If you reboot (leaving Swype enabled) it'll work fine.

Same problem for me after setting SlideIt up

I am using Swype and have no problem with multi touch. My version is 5612.

It only happens when you first switch to Swype, reboot your phone and it should be fine

It's Beta software...in fact you shouldn't have it unless you're part of the closed Beta group...if you are, you should be asking them as they would want to know about issues, that's what Beta testing is about.

If this unauthorised software is causing you a headache, and you insist on using it despite the developers telling you not to, well that's your fault.

when I install Sougou(Chinese Input), pinch is lost

There seems to be something linking multitouch to the keyboard.
If you hold down the menu key from ANYWHERE the keyboard will popup, I am yet to discover why this is but I feel there must be a reason for the keyboard to always be running, Multitouch could be it.

Let me just say it again in case people missed it:
AFTER INSTALLING YOUR THIRD PARTY KEYBOARD AND ENABLING IT, ALL YOU NEED TO DO TO FIX MULTITOUCH IS REBOOT.
Sorry for shouting but I've seen this crop up in a multitude of different threads around t'interweb now, all thinking it was a problem with a particular keyboard.

Yep thats what seems to fix my issue the only problem is i switch keyboards alot as i use swype for English input and HTC IME mod for Maltese input. Just signed up for the swype beta who knows it might re open some day.

looks like I am the first to install Smart Keyboard Pro and
NOT have the pinch zm corrected by a phone switch off/on
Its is a new HTC Desire with a few aps installed
Smart Keyboard + italian
wifi manager
EStrong F.Explorer
History eraser
WiFi Analyser
Biotrack
Quitit
Velox Pro
Real Calc
Google Maps
Anything I can do to give feedback on why it does not work trouble free ...

Multi touch Keyboard

are we ever going to be able to get a multitouch keyboard on our evos?
The default HTC keyboard supports multi-touch.
lol fail. Did you try typing on the keyboard with two fingers at the same time?

Not for me.
While the stock keyboard does not support multitouch, there are a couple 3rd party ones that do. Smart Keyboard Pro (I think thats the name) definitely does, not 100% about others though. I've used SKP for awhile and find it to be just as easy to use.
Better keyboard does not, even tho it says it does on the app description. Smart keyboard also does not from what i tried. If you do find one let us know! Maybe we can port the keyboard from the Droid X over.
This has nothing to do with a Multi-Touch Keyboard but a Virtual Keyboard nonetheless...does anyone know if there's a way to use the Virtual Keyboard from regular 2.1 Android on our EVOs?, because I personally think that Keyboard is better than HTC's.
Sooo basically the evos hardware dosent allow for multitouch keyboards?

No, the hardware allows for unlimited multi-touch, but no software keyboard is utilizing it.

You can download the Multi-Touch Keyboard APK file from the Motorola Droid X and install it using ASTRO or anything like that and it works fine, I'm using it now, it's close to the regular Android Keyboard I wanted.

Menu -> Settings -> Language and Keyboards -> Check on Multi Touch Keyboard
then go to any text field, press and hold. a pop up message will come up. select input method and choose multi touch keyboard
download link to apk pls?

[REQ] Multitouch Keyboard

I have always said I will not buy a tablet until they have a multitouch keyboard, because for me that is necessary for using a tablet. One key at a time and/or Swype will not cut it. I need to be able to type like my keyboard at home.
Please will someone port Droid X's keyboard and you will make a buyer out of me, and probably make my mananger and boss very happy.
(I work at sprint )
I'll put forth $5, :-\...sorry I can't do more alot of my money is going towards my server for Team Galaxy Sense
I think you will have to stick a few digits on the ebd before anyone will even take that request seriously. porting an IME is no trivial task.
Why do you need a kultitouch keyboard anyway? I cant see any posible usage scenario other than gaming and remote desktop.

I installed it on my Tab and the font on the keyboard was tiny
SmartKeyboard Pro supports multitouch. Apparently. http://www.dexilog.com/smartkeyboard/
Smart keyboard pro does it very well, and I'm pretty sure that better keyboard does too... I have them both on my vibrant...but I still keep coming back to swype... I'm anxiously awaiting delivery of my tab though so I can't report on how well they work on the tab, although I AM running the leaked 2.2 (obsidian) rom on my vibrant (same processor/ram/etc...), and they work very well on it. If you have a store demo you can install the free version of smart keyboard pro on it... The multi touch works, just not the user dictionary and some of the other customization features (like setting the long press duration...)

A multi touch keyboard lets you type faster... Your finger can still be touching a key when you hit the next one... Without multi touch, your finger had to be completely off of the last key before you can hit the next one... It doesn't seem like a big deal, but it makes a noticeable difference...

I'm extremely picky about this and it was the reason I ditched my HTC Incredible (it's shoddy multi-touch couldn't keep up with my typing...this has supposedly been fixed in later patches).
Nonetheless, I installed Smart Keyboard (I hate Better Keyboard) on my Tab, and it works flawlessly. I highly recommend it, it's inexpensive and you won't break bank on it.
lol - smartkeyboard pro ftw, use it on both my android devices after trying everything else
lots of options, many themes, great multitouch

LOL wut
2.2 should now support multitouch. But I don't get why that was a reason to ditch the incredible. Anyway, this hasn't been a issue for me and I can type pretty fast.

I have a Desire and I'm not sure if it's keyboard is multitouch (HTC IME Mod), but if it isn't then that would explain why I don't understand the need, but anything that lets me type faster is great, the two stock keyboards are utter rubbish.
Another vote for Smart Keyboard Pro. I have used it on both my Evo and G Tablet and it is the best.
Well, the default keyboard on my Tab does multitouch just fine. Only the Swype keyboard seems to lack multitouch when typing normally.

If I'm understanding right, then the default (not swype) keyboard lets me press a key and before removing my finger from it press another.
I believe this is the multitouch behaviour being requested and as such, assuming I am correct, I can also confirm this as working.

Multiple keyboard issues

I've installed cyanogen 7 in my motorola defy and since then I'm experiencing a problem with the use of multiple keyboards in it.
I have Swype, Better Keyboard and SwiftKey installed, and frequently when I'm into some app and I try to choose which keypad to use, I only have Android Keyboard active.
And no mater whether I have only one more extra keyboard selected alongside with AK or if I have all of them selected, it always end up to AK being the sole active keypad.
Has anyone been through something like this? Or, is it there a way to patch or solve it?

I'm running the Nordic Rom with CM7 and had the similar experience. I resolved this by
1. Selecting the 'swype' as input method in settings/language & Keyboards
2. Opening up the default email and selecting compose
3. Select the options button, (visible on the bottom left of the android keyboard)
4. Selected swype as input method.
This appears to have now default swype across all apps. I've rebooted several times and it has stayed as swype. No idea how to then change to another keyboard
btw i rebooted several times and it has stayed as android keyboard,if got solutions pls teach us how to patch inside cm7.thank!!
Not sure if this will help, or is the issue, but I had a same kind of problem. It turned out the keyboards were on the SD card, and not on the phone. Once I moved them back to the phone I had no problems. I can just long press in a text field, and all my keyboards show. Oh and this is basic, but sometimes we miss it. Installing a new ROM or factory reset means you need to go to the keyboard settings, and checking each box of the keyboards you have installed all over again. I only point this out as I had to to a hard reset, and couldn't figure out why I only had the Android one available. Oops.

Keyboard typing speed

I have noticed that with the stock keyboards, whenever I type really fast they always fail to detect the 2nd keystroke that was made within short interval after the first one. Is there a keyboard out there that could fix this problem or is it a inherent deficiency with the capacitive onscreen keyboards?
On a side note, can anyone tell me where to download the gingerbread in android market? I have looked high and low and couldn't find it.
I honestly haven't used the factory keyboard... I've got Swiftkey X, it seems to handle multitouch. I've even tried typing leaving my first finger down while pressing the next - no issues.
That's not the reason I got it though, I got it because it's built on a slick predictive text algorithm, it predicts the next words it thinks you might want to type so you type less. And the voice recognition I like better too, if you use the voice-to-text... it gives you 3 options to pick from so you aren't stuck groaning at whatever it thought you said.
if you search for gingerbread keyboard in the market you should find it. I think the developer is steven lin and it is called "keyboard from android 2.3"
I am using swift now and it also has that missing keystroke problem. I have also noticed that text prediction doesn't work with at least gmail application. In addition, like the samsung keyboard, there is no way to force use my own "misspelled" word when prediction is enabled.

I noticed lag with stock keyboard, switched to swiftkey (my always default) and still a little laggy... I came across A.I.keyboard, tried it and its like swiftkey with no lag and cool customization ...I'm really starting to really like this keyboard ...been using it the past few days and liking it alot...
No lag for me

Keyboard doesn't play sounds anymore!

Hello everyone! I just got my One X on Monday and so far I'm pretty happy with it, despite some small hiccups due to the first version of the SW.
Today I have installed an alternative camera app from the Market (Lg Camera Pro) and I turned off in the options the sound of the shutter. Guess what? The HTC stock keyboard stopped playing its sounds eversince, and no matter what I do there is no way to have them back. I have also uninstalled the Lg Camera app, but to no avail.
My idea is that the app has somehow overwritten some system file and as a result the keyboard is now mute. But is it possible, considering the handset is not even rooted yet?
Any ideas are very welcome.. if I don't find any other solution I will have to go for a full reset.
I have a heap of iPhone mates that I wish could find this LG app you mention. They all sit there in the room, going tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick on their phones while txting...sounds like a bloody stenographer's convention!
Sorry, I have no answer to your problem, but I am glad people around you are enjoying the silence

How about your screen lock / unlock? Is the sound still on? If doesn't then try to install some sound manager apps (ex: Audio manager) and check the volume level for system.
Awesome tip OP! A way to remove annoying keyboard sounds, will apply it if I get this phone and trial it on other devices.

You can always disable the keyboard sound via the keyboard setting menu. Most of the HTC device come with keyboard sound turned off.
I normally use the keyboard on mute, but that has nothing to do with the fact that I should be able to turn the sound on if I wish to do so!
Anyway I had to do a factory reset from recovery to have it back. Thanks to all.
Best tip I can give you : go to vip.swiftkey.net, sign up for the beta and download free Swiftkey 3.0 beta!
The keyboard is amazing compared to any other keyboard and since it's beta it's also free ;-)!

It's an entirely different way of typing. Swype is faster because you don't have to remove your finger from the keyboard (at least not that often).
Swiftkey is faster because it predicts words insanely well, if you write "I'll be there in 5 min" for example it will suggest "be there in 5 min" after you write I'll.
It's a very intresting piece of software which learns what you type the most and how you type it.
Also the new beta even adds spaces between words if you have forgotten it (check video in the thread in VIP section of swiftkey for example).
I tried Swype, Swiftkey, SlideIT, stock keyboard, Sense 4.0 keyboard and I still love Swiftkey the most. At the start it isn't that great but when you use it a few days it becomes 10x better (because of the "learning" of the software).
