Hi, I was out for a while from this forum, the Desire made me back. I just ordered mine, was hearing a rumor that hTC has promised an update by which the Desire will be capable of making 720P videos and also encoding and DivX playback. So all I wanna know how true is that?
Thanks.
As far as I know it is not a definite, and there is actually no official word from HTC... YET lol

HTC doesn't have the permission to use the DivX Codec, and 720p is unsupported. PERIOD.
There's an update due with 720p Recording and DivX playback support apparently.
http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2010...ceive-divx-playback-support-in-future-update/
Yeah, I read that news a month before but wanted to know if there is any update on that. Anyway, I believe hTC and their words.
Thanks.

There are rumours of HD video recording for the Desire, but why isn't this available for the Nexus one if they have the same hardware?

HD support will come with a firmware update, the hardware can do it, but the software doesnt yet

I was thinking the same after reading all news about the Sprint HTC Evo:

including the HTC Sense user experience, an 8.0 megapixel auto-focus camera/camcorder with support for recording HD-capable video at 720p ...

It uses the same Snapdragon 1GHz (except this one for CDMA).
I dont know if the 8MP camera has anything to do with 720p recording ...
So, this HD 720p recording definitely only the software, which I assume:
- The CAMERA
I guess, we can rip the software from HTC Evo and put it in the HTC Desire
Easy to say btw

Good news for the Desire!
I hope they will keep 30fps though
720x480 30fps is already very good
I have just watched the below video and I have mixed feelings about whether the Desire is capable of hd video recording, and will have divx support on release.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2RA0T67Wws
The employee seems to shoot down the rumours as he says that he heard them on the net.
Why would htc keep these features a secret? but at the same time on the t-mobile site under coming soon phones HD video recording is noted as a feature?
Well, actually he's literally saying "at the moment", and that is VERY much on the first week of the announcement, coming from a HTC employee. it means they're working on it.
http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2010...ceive-divx-playback-support-in-future-update/
"HTC Desire to receive DivX playback support in future update"
It appears that one has to trust HTC and buy Desire over Nexus one, hoping for 720p and DivX. I believe DivX is possible, but 720p would be unlikely to happen over update.
I believe I saw another video, where an 'HTC Exhibitor' said that the device as it is records in VGA but the hardware is already in there to support HD video recording- even going as far as saying, "if some developed an app to do this they (HTC) would have no problem with it".
i've preordered a desire and on the specs-page they say it supports DivX!
link
I can confirm that the desire plays DIVX. I have had a demo handset from HTC for a week, playback is very good, great phone.

Please let us know - does it play 720p mp4 MPEG and 720p AVI DivX without conversion? Any limit to bitrate?
i have seen a few threads saying that the Desire has 720p recording and divx player but most reviews are saying this has been left out.
Does the Desire have these features out the box or are they in the pipeline and can we expect to see these functions from future roms?
Apparently this will come in a future firmware upgrade, as far as I am aware it is not present in any currently available Desires
indeed. none of them have it, and i don't think it's been confirmed that it will happen. afaik it's still just a rumour at this point.
well i asked HTC about the HD videorecording and divx support and this is what they said.
Dear xxxx
No, this will not available with the next firmware.
It does not have the video capabilities to record 1080x720 which is 720p
We are not licensed to distribute Divx Codec
Thanks for contacting HTC Europe
Kind regards.

Movies.
Not only watch movies, but make them also with the HTC Desire. HD (High Definition) video capture lets you capture special moments as they happen in brilliant high definition.
It's not HD (at present)
where did you get that info from?

Here!

Yeah but if we have to add software to the phone, is this not going to further limit the available space on the phone meaning removing a number of apps?
The phone memory capacity is so poor can it really work without Google allowing apps on memory cards to work?
I think Play have just printed the incorrect specs.
No one from HTC has said any 720P recording updates as far as Im aware.
don't forget that anything above 425 lines is legaly defined as hd. at 480 they are technically correct. bloody cheeky but correct.

Standard Def TV in the UK is already 576 lines, I think you will find that the HD Spec lists 720 lines as a minimum for HD TV so I would therefore expect that when referring to video playback and recording the 720 lines mininmum would still apply.
I think that in the phone industry though it is quite common to call a screen resolution of 480 lines HD just to add confusion
i think rather it is just Play getting it wrong.
Phones4U also say something similar instore (not checked online).

Lol! How suprising! They'll say anything to sell a phone!
I'd rather they just made video recording at 30FPS rather than the crappy 20FPS that it is now. It's *extremely* stuttery in video mode. A weak LG Viewty from 3 years ago could record at 120FPS , why does a snapdragon powered phone in 2010 record at 20 FPS?

It's supposed to be 30fps, at a higher resolution, and presumably greater bit depth. Are you recording to sd card or internal memory?

It is really sketchy and not good quality at all, my GS2 has better video playback quality
YouTube looks crap, ESPN goals does too (you can hardly see the football) and so does any videos loaded through the browser
What are your thoughts?

The one I got rid of had dead pixels so it was being exchanged by the network and that is the one I did the scratch test on because I didn't care what the network thought due to the way they pissed me around. The replacement which I am contracted to, I still have.

Well as long as you know I'm not trolling, I love this site, this nexus and the S2
But I am just trying to patch some of the things on the nexus I don't like by getting other people's opinions on how to fix it, eg how to improve the video playback quality

How about an actual video file you copy to the device?
Does it look bad then?
I think netflix looks like **** on this phone.. though I attribute that to the fact that it isn't in HD..
Download a nice .mkv 720p HD trailer from the web, and view. It looks stunning.

Anything you'd recommend mate?
And do you think the videos I have mentioned look bad due to them not being optimized?
What I can't understand is why the i4 videos are so stunning clear yet these aren't when there isn't much PPI difference
that's the problem of the super HD devices
regular videos optimized for the web are too low quality for the phone
you will need at least videos optimized for 480 if not 720 for it to look good
so in youtube you need to select 480 if 720 is not available
that means you will also eat a lot more DATA if you are on 3G / 4G
this is one of the many reason why GN wasn't so appetizing to me
specially when 3G & 4G networks are not as fast as they advertise them to be

Data isn't a problem for me with 3's "All you can eat data" but the video optimization is, I am a bit gutted about the quality
Thanks for explaining tho mate
download jetvd, a google search will do. then view it in 720p or you can download it to your phone in 720p
As for YouTube are you watching from the browser or the app itself?
I compared an HD video in the youtube app between the Galaxy Nexus and the SGS2 and the Nexus wins hands down... the detail is far superior because of the newer youtube app on the nexus. When the SGS2 gets ICS and/or the same youtube app as the nexus then maybe it'll be closer.
For large MKV files the SGS2 will win because samsung supplies codecs to view almost any video you throw at it, where as the nexus is constrained by the codecs that AOSP supports, which isn't nearly as expansive.
I have no clue what the **** the OP is talking about.
Check out the 2012 trailer in HD (should be the first in YouTube when searching for "HD 2012 trailer"). And make sure it actually has the "HD" icon in the vid list when you get your search results.
There is a little frame stutter... but hell, my $2000 i5 + ATI 6990 triple monitor gaming system also has frame stutter with YouTube (nature of FLV). The clarity on the other hand actually surprised me. It's just as good if not completely equal to 1080p MP4 videos (like Kanye's 'Lights') which also play awesome.

What do you guys use to play MKVs?
The SGS2 has its own codecs, when I used other ROMs I would use Moboplayer.
But Moboplayer won't download any codecs on the Galaxy Nexus so it's basically useless. Next I tried Rock Player, with hardware decoding I get good video but no sound and in software decoding I get good audio but suttering video.
So what to do? Re-encoding is a pain...
