USB connection hangs boot up? - Desire General

I'm having a pretty weird issue here. When I connect my X10 with Windows loaded up everything is running nice and dandy. But when I restart my computer, the BIOS POST will just hang until I disconnect the phone from my computer. Also, if I plug it in during Windows load, it will hang again, until I disconnect it.
Really weird issue here that I've never had with any other device. Is this related to Android by any chance? Or the X10? Your help is appreciated.

[SOLVED]Computer see's device for a few seconds, then disconnects.

Interesting problem I have had on and off. When I plug my phone into my desktop, it will connect normally, then a few seconds later it acts like I unplugged it. It's not the rom as it does it in recovery as well(both with usb-ms activated and without). I have HTC Sync installed. Rebooting either the computer and/or phone doesn't fix it, it just goes away after awhile and starts working again. I've experienced the problem FAR less when connecting it to my laptop, it will typically work there and not on my desktop when the problem crops up.
it's like this problem but it's not constantly http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=711616
-Edit- the device also doesn't show it's charging even when it 'disconnects'
I have the same problem. just keeps discontenting over and over it sees it for a few seconds then disconnects reconnects then off again.

Mine doesn't reconnect, it 'disconnects' and stays that way(as if i unplugged it) until i actually do unplug it and reconnect it.

I was having the same problem on my MacBook until I realized the MacBook must be plugged into power. Once plugged in everything was good. I wonder if the Evo demands more power through USB then other devices.
Yeah, sounds like a power issue to me. If you're using a USB port on a hub or on a keyboard, try one on the PC itself. Also, it could be a slow USB port or a bad cable if you are continuing to have issues. Try another computer if you can, and if you still have the problem try a different cable. Still have the issue, reflash (if you're running a custom rom) or contact Sprint for service.
Same issue here, but on a desktop PC (Dell Studio XPS) using the front-mounted USB port (not a hub). Keeps disconnecting/reconnecting, but often takes 10-15 minutes between cycles. Using stock ROM (for now, at least). Will try other ports & another PC and will report back.
Already tried different ports, only motherboard ports
Rom doesn't matter as the problem exists in both android and recovery
Don't have a different cable, however the same cable will work fine on my laptop then not work on my desktop

If it works on a laptop, but not the desktop, then it appears to be an issue with your desktop. Any other USB devices doing it?
I would check your motherboards manufacturer and make sure you've got the right USB drivers, a bios update might be in order as well.
But before all that, I've got an idea. First and foremost, try this:
Go to device manage (either from control panel, right-clicking my computer and going to properties, or searching for devmgmt.msc in the start menu search.)
Navigate down to Universal Serial Bus controllers, double click on USB Root Hub (you probably have 1 for every USB Port, so you may have to do them all.)
Click on the Power Management tab, and uncheck the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." check box and see if that solves your problem.
i had this issue on my hero. it was corrected for me after i did a wipe of data and cache. i restored from titanium afterwards. YMMV
good luck
one thing you might try is disabling sense and using the android launcher. then reset the phone. once it boots up try and connect it to your pc. This was how I got mine to connect. when I was using the sense launcher it somehow blocked that options screen and the default I selected wouldn't stick. once I got the connection to my pc working this way I was able to re-enable sense and it's worked perfectly ever since.
I do not take credit for this fix, someone else on here told me to try this n it worked perfectly.

it was nothing with the rom, since it was doing the same thing in recovery.
it turned out to be the short little usb extender cable that was going a foot and ahalf from behind my pc to the side so i could plug it in easier.

what kind of computer do you have?

okay. I have the same system running on my computer. did you restarted the pc or shutdown?
im going to restart it again and see if it helps thanks for your help man
Don't restart, shut it down than take the battery out and make sure that ac cord is not connected too. wait for like 10 seconds, reverse the process.

[Q] Soft-bricked, trouble with Odin + USB

I've scoured the forum to an answer to my problem but I've not yet found any so hopefully you guys can help.
Somehow I managed to soft-brick my Epic 4g, just been having all sorts of problems. Anyway I'm able to get in download mode just fine so I should be able to restore my phone no problem right? Wrong.
The problem I'm having is that my computer won't freaking recognize my phone when it's plugged in. Here's what I'm doing:
1) Start Odin, have phone ready in Download Mode
2) Load up the PDA file
3) Plug USB cord in to Phone
Once I plug the cord in to the phone my computer says that it does not recognize the device (or that it's malfunctioned or some such thing).
I've tried everything to fix this! Here's a weird bit of success though:
This morning I turned on my phone, did the 3-button combo to get to clockwork recovery then plugged my phone in. The phone was recognized!! I rebooted, went to download mode and Odin recognized it! At this point I tried flashing my stock kernel and it failed. Now I'm no longer able to get in to recovery using the 3 button combo and my computer no longer recognizes my USB connection again in download mode.
Am I totally screwed here? What's up with the USB??
OH! Just wanted to add: I'm using Windows 7 x64 and I do have the correct USB drivers installed.
hmmm
Have u tried redownloading the samsung drivers? They really ***** out sometimes...
I have. I've actually gone through and tried the x86 and x64 drivers listed on the forums as well as the official samsung drivers.
Usually when Windows says the device is unrecognized or has malfunctioned it has to do with the USB port you're using not having enough power. The stock Epic USB cable also sucks because its long and skinny which leads to more power drop. Try using a better quality USB cable (I always use a blackberry cable when flashing) and connect it to a USB port on the back panel of the computer that comes directly off of the motherboard.
Some USB ports may work better than others - for instance on my Dell E series laptops I can't flash when using the USB ports on the left side of the machine, but the ones on the right work perfectly. The left side ones just don't deliver as much juice and this phone is a power hungry little guy.
Alright I got it working. I do think it had something to do with the cable. I kept swtiching back and forth between Samsungs and my old Motorola one. After a few reboots and reinstalls of drivers the Motorola one finally worked
I have had that same thing happen, tried an old moment cable and problem solved. After that went on ebay and bought some extras just to have on hand just in case. Also thanks about the usb port explanation, makes sense.

One X Causes Mac to Freeze

I am having multiple issues. The big one is that sometimes when I plug in the phone to my Macbook Pro, it decides to hang the OS. But it's really weird. It's like only the mouse and keyboard hang. Music will keep playing normally, the clock in the menubar runs with no problems, and if I press the power button the "What do you want to do?" window still pops up, I just can't tell it anything. It forces me to hold down the power button for a hard restart. Here's the weird part: I can't narrow it down to what is causing it. I can't tell if it is the phone in Disk Mode or what. And it doesn't always do it. Heck, sometimes the phone won't even act like it's plugged into a computer so it won't even try to connect.
When I first got the phone it didn't do this, but a few weeks after installing DoubleTwist (the only thing I have installed for this phone) it started happening. Uninstalled DoubleTwist and it still does it.
Any help is super appreciated. I searched around and there are similar problems on other phones, but nothing as odd as this.
Thanks!

I have had no other problems with any other devices. And for me, this doesn't go away if I wait for 30 seconds or so. I did find out a few minutes ago that if I unplug my phone, within 30 seconds my mouse begins to work again, but my keyboard still won't work. It seems as though if I press a few keys on my keyboard sometimes the mouse will lock up for another 30 seconds. Only a restart will make it all work normally.
gotcha. well in that case sorry I don't know
Ha it's cool. Hopefully somebody will know though!
have you written to apple to make sure it's ok to plug in an android phone to a mac?
are you on ICS or JB? if it's the later it could be the MTP connection that's been introduced
you have to let your mac and hox know that the lawsuit is over...

Hahahahaha, for some reason I don't know if that was ever an issue lol
I'm running 4.0.4 which from what I understand is still ICS. So it's probably good that I haven't attempted to upgrade just yet?
The main reason I even care right now is because I'm trying to jailbreak, but I'm having all sorts of issues. I figured I'd start with this one haha.
hahaah

I have no issues with my mac...running OS10.8.2...i plugged my HOX, transferred data and even flashed boot.img via mac...no issues whatsoever..seems like you may have to do a SMB reset..try googling ur issue, probably there's a solution somewhere..

However, my iPhone also can't record audio anymore, and it's two years old. My HOX can and isn't :highfive:

I'll look up an SMB reset. Haven't heard of it. Still new to Android lol
However, I googled for a while and even went nuts on here looking for it, no one has this exact issue. The other similar issues only involve programs freezing. For me it seems like my keyboard and mouse freezing, while the computer keeps going. Sometimes I can't even get the two to talk to each other. And when I CAN get my HOX to connect without freezing up the keyboard and mouse, when I run the root through terminal it can't find the phone, in charging mode or in disk mode.

So, did an SMC reset (when I googled SMB reset, SMC came up instead). I thought it worked, but it didn't. My mouse would unfreeze, but my keyboard would still be jacked until I restarted. And if I pressed too many keys on the keyboard the mouse would freeze back up for another 30 seconds. I am too tired to think of what I could do right now haha. Throw suggestions (LOGICAL ONES!) and I'll try it out haha. I just want this dang thing to work so I can root! :silly:
This is clearly a Mac issue. Absolutely nothing to do with the hox whatsoever.
You said that you used to be able to plug the phone in without any issues, and the only reason you want to plug the phone in now is to root it (You said Jailbreak but I presume you meant root).
Why don't you try a factory reset on the HOX and see if it resolves the issue. If it does then you can root your phone and will be installing a new ROM anyway so it won't matter that you've done the factory reset. If it doesn't then it means something has changed on you MAC and I can't help you unless you install Windows
Have you tried another usb charge cable with your phone and macbook it could be the cable is damaged internally causing a short circuit and making the usb devices play up even internal like keyboard/trackpad? Just a guess as Ive experienced a broken cable disabling usb which then works fine after reboot.

factory reset of HOX won't solve an issue with computer. It seems that you USB port is screwing up or is screwed up. See if you can connect another android device the computer and repeat the issue again...if so your USB port is jacked...BTW, u are not using an external keyboard/ mouse, are u?
I'd take the computer back to the service centre and shown them the issue...
me too...seems like MTP is not going well on mac(

^^^^ Now THIS I haven't really thought of! And, actually I think it makes more sense than a software issue. I was having problems sometimes even getting the two to talk to each other unless I moved the cord a bit. I've dropped the phone from my nightstand a few times and it has landed on the cord, so I wouldn't be too surprised if either the cord is messed up or (God forbid) the port inside of the phone is messed up. Sometimes if I had the HOX in disk mode and moved the cord just a bit then it would suddenly eject and often freeze. I have another cable back home, so I'll grab it when I'm there tonight or tomorrow and see if I have the same issue!
