I don't know if this has been mentioned before so if it was, please delete/remove this thread.
EU/UK users can't enjoy some of the 2.1/N1 features on our Desires such as Voice-to-Text and Google Navigation. Fortunately, there are solutions to both. The Voice-to-Text has already been linked and today I found out how we can get Google Navigation too.
Go to the Android Market, search for Nav Launcher and download the application. Lauch Nav Launcher and download Google Maps [brut] ... voila ... Google Navigation for the rest of the world. I tested it and it seems to work in Spain ... i.e. it plots the route and starts talking etc. Will try it properly when I have a chance. In either case, better than no Google Navigation.
Nav works.

Thanks!! I tested Nav Launcher and Google Maps [brut] and it works in London, UK.
Can you please detail as to how to have the voice-to-text working?
tried it an it worked for me. very nice. but i think i stick with co pilot for now.. bit sentimental on my G1 but flys on my Desire. nice cheap alternative anyway. for those who don't have co pilot.
It doesn't work in the Netherlands.

My experience as well (although on the X10). That, and most of the times the voice instructions were either simply omitted or garbled.
A mistake here was that the software tries to say the name of the street, instead of doing like most other nav-software and simply state "left turn ahead, 100m".

I have just ordered my Desire from Mobiles so was doing some advance reading and in one thread it mentioned running the Nexus One keyborad to get speech to text. The only problem is it doesn't say how to do it, one post says read the other thread but without a link. Can some kind sole point me in the right direction as my searches don't find it.
Thanks
Sully
The thing is that even if you get a keyboard with the speech-to-text button, it won't work, because you lack the engine. However, it has been speculated that only the T-mobile version lacks this function, and that the SIM free versions will have it.
The stuff I read showed a video of it working and the handset order is a unlocked version. Will wait and see I am sure it will be one of the things most users want to do.
Thanks for your reply

What engine are you talking about? Everything is done on Google servers rather than on the phone. It worked on my G1, so I don't see why it wouldn't work on Desire.
Karolis how did you get it to work, is there a tut or instructions
Thanks
Sully
I used this on G1 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=624416 but I can't install it on Desire because HTC_IME is in ROM and we have no root.
By the way, here's N1 LatinIME.apk http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5830176 -- I'll have to try adb method when I'm at home.
I think using that method we should be able to install either IME.
Will report back later...

Thanks fella that is great, Mobiles now don't have stock even though the website shows in Stock so will have to wait a few days for the phone.

I don't have the phone yet personally, but a few people on here have reported that when they try to use the v2t function, they get error messages like "Missing engine" and "Your device does not support this function" (or something like that, I can't remember exactly what they were, but you should find them in the other threads on this subject)
I installed the following app labelled "Verizon 2.1 Keyboard With Voice Input" online. Having installed it I now have voice to text on the desire! It works best just with the android keyboard but it also works with better keyboard. I have not tried elsewhere yet.
I found it on the web site below.
link to warez site removed and then search for verizon
I have no idea about the website but the apk seems to work well. As for the voice recognition. The accuracy for me is good but not great.

I appreciate you trying to help us all out, but that's a warez site and you can get banned for posting links like that...
Interesting enough, there seems to be no moderators on Desire forum

works a treat for me thanks a lot, how do you actually use it to speak in the message app? I can click on the app and talk and google searches. Oh and i have changed the keyboard to Android in settings, it says when you change it "are you sure you want to do this blah blah due to keyloggers etc" and i have enabled voice input.
Ohh didn't realise it was warez soz..
Hey, that is interesting ... Dont you need to have "root" access?

@topic
what happens when you switch the sense off? isnt the sense keyboard removed?
Sense UI and HTC_IME.apk work independently.
I have triend instaling modded HTC_IME as well as N1 keyboard via adb, but it's a no-go for a non-rooted phone
You will be disappointed when you get it i had it on my old phone the Milestone before i sold it and its not that good, doesn't get all the words right and its slow.

I seem to use fella a lot at the moment
I've ran into this a couple times now, but i've yet to find any type of method that works other than going to the browser and visiting bing/google.com...
But is there anyway to search for images when you're using the search button and bing search on the phone. when using the search button on the phone for say "will ferrell janet reno" because i want to see pictures of the skits from saturday night live, i only get the options for web, local, and news. is there a faster way of searching for images other than going to internet explorer or a third party app?
I am also wondering this? I know they have a google search app, but I feel like the bing built in search should include image results
There are third party apps that can do the job. But you have to pay.
But it's a shame that Bing does not even include such a basic feature.
So I'm using the Google Search app, which is anyway better and includes images search.
I really wonder how MS expect to compete with Google with their crappy Bing service. It's maybe ok in the US, but here it's unusable.
Yeah this has been pissing my off recently. I've tried even the most basic searches like, "dog" or "mcdonald's" and I get no results in the built in image search. WTF?! If I use a third party app like Bing Image Search ( http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/apps/a7819f29-d887-e011-986b-78e7d1fa76f8 ) then I get results as expected...

I just searched 'dog' and got results on the images page.
Odd. I get plenty of images even for more obscure terms, let alone stuff like dog.
Keep in mind Bing is very dependant on your localisation. When I ran the phone in czech, the search button took me to the desktop version of bing. Switching to English - UK gives me the normal phone version of bing that works completely fine.
Just did a search for dog as well - no problems.
Well to be more clear I'm using the built in search. So if you press the search button on your phone.
But guess what? Its working now. I restarted my phone after doing a backup using WP7 Easy Backup Tool. Maybe the reset fixed it.
Yah there's an odd bug with Bing image search on the phone. I reverted to a previous backup and get "no images" for most everything now. Was going to reset the phone completely but my Lumia 900 will be here in two days
enter search term, search and switch to images instead of web, if thats what you are looking for.

Thats exactly what I do, and no images are shown. Its odd. It doesn't always happen, but it happens quite a bit. And on simple terms (like say "dog")
Sometimes search is down.

Could really be an issue with your phone localisation somewhere which messes up bing from time to time. Or you're just unlucky and keep getting sent to a really bad server.
Sorry if this has been asked, but is there any word on official google maps for win7?
Is it at least planned?
you can try looking for gMaps. Not sure if its official or not.

If you don't see an official Google Maps app in the market place it doesn't exist That said, I highly doubt they'll be releasing one any time soon either! Not until Windows phone get's a larger more competitive market share.
Use Outdoor Navigation from GPS Tuner
It can display every type of map you can imagine
Can anyone help me with link or files for navigation app like Igo primo with EU maps?
I tried to search but search doesnt work, just loading and no results. Ty

Tnx again. I found also iGO Primo for Note 3, works great also like HERE.
My iGo firmware is 3 years out of date and i was wondering if anyone has managed or bothered to update the software for it. The maps are fine as I can get but firmware is another matter. I have tried to just install a later .apk file but that didnt work. Anyone?
i thought about downloading the store version, but it is a little pricey and wasn't sure it would work right

i just downloaded the Play Store version on my phone to see what the latest version looks like. Looks way cooler than the one I got from Joying.
However I'm so tied into Google, nothing can really beat Google Maps, other than it is just painfully slow on the Joying
hi thanks for the response. I will have a look too. yes i agree with you about google maps i have only used it once because it needs a live internet connection to work properly, but it was good to use.
FYI (for those who don't know) the iGO version from Joying is pirated. I had confirmed this the iGO makers. The serial they provided was not authentic. The one from the Play store is and will be able to give you fully updated maps, poi, and some others after the purchase. I would recommend if you can afford it. It is very easy to use if you are driving. The best feature is the keyboard, it will allow you to start typing an address and will only allow what is close to it to be typed.

Interesting using pirated software. I am currently trying the sygic software as it seems to be a little more graphic and less crowded on screen. Though the volume is low.
