the desire owners will have noticed, that when you press the on/off button, the screen turns on and you will see the slider (with the time and date).
(unless you replaced it with an app or something).
now you can choose how to unlock it, either slide the slider down with your finger.
OR you press the menu button.
i have the desire in my pocket with the screen towards my leg (because it's more comfortable deu to the little curve on the bottom), and i KEEP pressing the f#####ng menu key.
in other words: my phone gets unlocked every couple of minutes.
my mates think its cool, because i'm calling the whole wide world from my pocket without using my hands or fingers.
but i don't like it, neither does my wallet.
i know there are unlock apps, but i'm not always sure what they do.
i'm looking for a hack/app that disables the menu key.
in that way the single and only way to unlock the phone is to slide the slider down with my finger.
so nothing will change EXCEPT the fact that the menu key can unlock the screen.
can someone please help me, because i'm really getting sick of it (even though the phone itself is absolute gold).
p.s. i'm not familair with rooting.
so you're pressing the power button, then the menu button in your pocket? how'd you manage that?
yeah.. i kinda should be in the world book of records for being able to do the impossible.
i made my last htc touch pro 2 brake it's screen when i flew off by opening the keyboard.
apparently the screen came off or a screw came of or something.
i'm good at that .
besides, i'm a big lad, and when i sit down the fabric of my jeans curls (english is not my native language, so i'm not to sure how to describe it), like a rinkle.
at the top it presses the power button (which gets pressed so bloody easily).
pressing the menu button is easy, it happends all the time apparently.
it happened before that i suddenly had a different background, deleted widgets, replaced widgets, called people, turned on gps, opened a program etc.
believe, i can get impossible things happen i'm just a professional clumsy dude haha.
but anyways, you got an idea?
I don't know how to disable it, but you could get a case.
Check these out:

I got one and they're pretty cool. Dirt cheap too.
oh right lol! i'd be careful if your pockets are tight, some people broke the nexus one screens with tight pockets, and my desire came with a warning to remove from pockets before sitting down
but i'm sorry i don't know how to disable it, i have rooted my phone and installed froyo which doesn't do it, but its not a perfect rom yet (certain stuff doesn't work)
If you keep the screen side against your leg, the screen will eventually curve in at the center. Happened to my N95 8GB. I can almost guarantee over time it will happen with the Desire. Dont ever sit on it. EVER.

i don't sit on it, it's in my front pocket.
but still, i understand what you're saying, and i geuss you could be right.
but then again, i bought a mobile phone so i could have a phone that's mobile.
and beind a man, i put stuff in my pockets, same with my phone.
so a phone should be made to be put in a pocket.
(not back pocket, because i'll crush it when i sit on it, but in the front pocket).
still, i would like to hear from somebody who found a way to disable the menu key.
it doesn't make sense to me at all, to have a touchscreen that you unlock with a button.....
still... nodbody seems to know anything as simple as turning off the function of a button....
so now when using the phone with one hand I can't reach stuff high up on the screen like the address bar to press it... on smaller phones it was okay. so my idea for devs its to put all the stuff that needs to be frequently touched at the top of the screen to the bottom... back down to earth. please spread the word
True. But you don't need devs to accomplish this. For example, us gestures in the Nova launcher to display notifications with a one finger slide down ...or double tap.
There are literally dozens of ways to customize how u interact with your Note to accomodate not being able to reach the top of thw screen easily.
Thats Android for ya...

Pie control on PA 2.99 fixes this. Swipe up from bottom for navigation and notifications. Tablet Ui also has notifications on bottom
Flygrip
To make this easier (with no apps or roms) I bought a flygrip. It's $30, but it comes with a tpu case and you get free shipping with the promo code QBKING77. Totally worth it.

I checked this out, and to me it looks like it would be odd to use. Did it take much to get used to it?
I'm interested because it would replace my kickstand case because the case makes it just a bit too big for some pockets, but without the case it fits fine.
fly grip looks interesting and I do want to add...
... that, as far as gestures go, I use GMD gesture control, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this app for note 2 users, I've even disabled the capacitative buttons as they are too low for my thumb to comfortably use. My thumb now just stays in one little area on the phone and controls everything with no need re-adjust the whole phone position to control it. That being said... more and more, larger 5" phones are coming out... so the top of the screen on-screen options are becoming antiquated.
...and now that I've disabled the capacitative buttons, I can actually lift and hold the phone from the bottom without accidentally presses a button, and/or when I pass my phone to someone to look at it, they no longer accidentally press the capacitative button as they used to frequently do.
How is it possible to hold this tab in portrait mode with those stupid hardware buttons located at where my left had is supposed to grip the tab?
I think this will be a turnoff for people who intend to use the tablet mainly for reading and annotating textbook, unless there is an option to disable hardware buttons while in portrait mode or completely disable them and replace them with software buttons with orientation.
The alternative will be holding the tablet upside down with the left hand gripping the camera
btw this is the only issue holding me from buying this tab
It seems like people are making a bigger issue out of this than it actually is. The long side is around 10 inches long and the buttons might take up three. I'm sure you'll be able to handle it without accidental button presses. In my opinion, having the menu button just below my thumb is a welcome feature.
Since the buttons are on the long side, that is the default way of holding it. Now the question is that if you are holding it with left hand, why you don't simply rotate it to other direction?

Being a right handed person i hold the tab by the left hand and write/turn pages by the right.
I'm not sure if holding the tab by the camera is a wise idea, for the risk of accidentally touching the camera lens.

Well I don't see why touch the lens is that bad thing, as it usually is the part of phone, for exsample, which is touching table etc. And any fingerprints can be easily wiped from the lens. But that is just me.
ps. I don't understand using covers with phones either, with tablet they are more useful.
Yep, this is the only drawback I see. My stupid Crapple fans are going to laugh at me with their thin-bezeled, button free iPad 5's.
I don't know why the hell they had to put a hardware button on it. Hardware buttons on tablets are stupid.
EDIT:
I'll probably rotate it and hold it by the camera lens. It's not like I'll ever use a gigantic tablet to take a picture anyway. That's why I'm getting my Note 3, so I can take pictures with a gigantic phone.

You are right about the back camera but the front one i use frequently for video calls.
Looks like i'm the only one that actually likes the idea of a hard button! it's an instant access to home, not being able to do this on a nexus annoys me, but i don't see why this should be a deal breaker really.

Say what you will but I think an inch bezel around the whole tablet is necessary, how else you plan on holding the thing if there is no room for your thumb. I could care less about what any isheep has to say about my tablet.

I was holding of for years until there was one like this one. why dont you guys that want a thick bezel get one of the other dozen tablets that have the design you want. they have been out for years.

While im not crazy about the idea I do have a Note 2 and already i'm use to them being there.
Actually I can see some benefits....
I'm sure you can disable the buttons or a program will come out that can.
In fact here is a rough draft on how to hack them...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34247225&postcount=14
The reason why they have physical buttons is because since 4.2 and up, the tablet UI became the phone UI. So you no longer had a bar at the bottom, one side with cappy buttons and the other with the notification drawer.
Instead you have a status bar like on phones AND a bar at the bottom for only three buttons. Less screen estate, especially considering that Samsung would use the Home, Back and Menu buttons in capacitive form. That takes away quite a bit of screen space and you can see it happening especially in videos. To get what I mean, take a look at the 4.2.2 firmware for the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. More screen is lost because the design guidelines have changed.
What Samsung's done is take away the bottom bar and used the physical buttons instead. Not the best solution but it allows for more screen space. On the Note, it'd be a bit of a shame to have about a centimetre thick part of that awesome screen taken up by three buttons.

I agree with this. Though I am not a huge fan of the physical buttons I really like that it has the extra screen real-estate.
someone will mod it soon. i've actually gotten used to the buttons on my gn8. the only time hate em is when gaming. the rom I use has a mod to turn them off and only make them useable via spen. you'll get used to it too. you may never like it, but you can find a work around.
As someone who owns this tablet the physical buttons are a huge step backwards. Why? That POS menu key. Coming from the original Note 10.1 it's ridiculous constantly hitting that menu button to find out if it has a menu available. Compare to the original Note 10.1 where menu options appear in the action bar. Samsung has completely ruined the tablet experience with their incredibly stupid design choices. This tablet is such a huge pain to navigate. Why can't somebody else offer a Wacom stylus on their 10" Android tablet? I wish Google would throw an S Pen'ish stylus on their Nexus 10 so I can rid myself of Samsung's incompetence. I've never had such a frustrating tech purchase.
I have a Note II with a physical menu key but it's not nearly as frustrating because everything is so close together. I feel like my hand is running a marathon with this tablet having to move all ovef the place to navigate the UI.
I love the S Pen. It works beautifully. The screen is gorgeous. It's not a brick like some other high resolution tablets. It's very powerful and fast. Why oh why did they throw hardware keys on this thing and muck everything up. I would gladly take the black bar on the bottom with home, task switch and back if I could.
The disable hardware keys mod cannot come fast enough for me.
i'm not really diggin the physical buttons either. there's enough screen real estate to have the nav bar on the bottom. the home button is ok, but the menu and back have becoe more and more of a nuisance. i tolerate them on the gn8 b/c of the extra screen area i get plus using the soft nav buttons hack doesn't hide button properly in full screen video.
i can get use them being there on the note10 but i don't won't like them better than soft nav buttons. i hope if they hack it that it'll properly hide in full screen.
I haven't read the posts in this thread, but I wanted to comment that I happen to like the hard buttons. I'm right handed and hold it with my left like OP. I like that I can reach the option, home and return buttons (this is what you all mean by "hard buttons" right?) with my thumb. The design feels very intuitive and quite natural. I also recently found out that you can quickly access the task manager by holding down the home button. It will open up a menu similar to the menu that opened when you pressed the double rectangle button on the older model. The more time I spend with this device the more I love it. My mom is actually getting the new Note 3 so she's going to let me have her Note 2. I can finally get rid of this iphone 3 that came free with my contract.
Depending on where I press mine, it will either sound llike a very well made solid well built phone vs a cheap plastic throw away... Experimenting now it seems like if I hit it close to the top of the button vs the middle/center or bottom it will make the cheap plastic sound

My home button is slightly loud, sounds like any solid button though. From the bottom the sound is minimized. Could be the way it was constructed because of the water and dust resistance. I havent had a physical home button in a while though. Had the note 2 and then upgrade to note 4 but swapped that for the nexus 6 when I couldnt root and my phone would get very hot doing basic things.
I stopped buying Samsung because the home buttons would always fail and register double presses (launching into S Voice) after about a year of use. The OP post along with the scratches reported elsewhere makes me consider just getting a cheap One Plus Three...
I would love if Note 7 had:
1. ceramic or glass home button
2. Metal S Pen, not plastic

The home button and Spen on my very well used Note 2 and 4 are still perfect.
Had my note 3 for 2yrs and same.
As is my S3 minus the Spen
Pen is in there good. Takes a bit of force to pull out and the home button has a distinct click to it.
Sometimes I hear an audible click when using the home button. I thought it was just me, or tight mechanics... I kinda like it. I like mechanical keyboards, too...

Mine has sometimes loud sound and also sometimes when i press and swipe from left to right the home button sticks and stays pressed until i click it again, otherwise it is working fine.
i am thinking of taking it to the store and see what they say.
Mine does that also. If I press it offcenter to the left, it sometimes either sticks down, or emits a loud click when popping back up.
It doesn't bother me though. It happens very rarely, and the rest of the phone is perfect, so I don't want to have it replaced with one that isn't.
My buddies was sticking on almost every other click.. He returned it.. His was a black variant from china.
His new one is silver and flawless, same with mine.

Home Button Issue
I got my replacement note 7 yesterday. The home button does not click properly. I don't think I'm being anal about it but I took it back to T-mobile and everyone working there looked at me like I was crazy. The home button clicks perfectly on the right side but is stiff on the left side. Not a big deal because the button still functions, it just feels weird. If my thumb is more to the left of the home button, I dont get the feeling of the button being pressed. All I'm saying is that if I'm paying 950 with my hard earned money I expect it to function 100% out of the box. Anyone else have a similar issue. The T-mobile people told me to go to the Samsung store, aka they don't wanna deal with me. I'm annoyed with my experience and considering just dropping Samsung and T-mobile all together.
...
I havent had mine get stuck fortunately. There is definitely an issue with the Home buttons, I agree. No one at T-mobile wants to admit it. I don't like being considered crazy, and I'm pissed.
lorenzobjuarez said:
I literally just bought a black one from a T-Mobile store about an hour ago. On mine pressing on the left side of the home button actually feels proper, it is the RIGHT side that feels cheap and makes a loud noise when clicking it.
Even more bothersome it's the fact that if you press and hold on the home button and slide from LEFT to RIGHT the button will actually get stuck underneath the right side until I wiggle it & then it will "pop" out making a loud click!!!
Can you confirm if yours does this & gets stuck too?
There is definitely something wrong with these home buttons, I'm with you it's totally pissing me off that I paid almost $1,000 for a phone with a CHEAP plastic home button that isn't even done right. At least when Apple uses a home button they make sure it's a glass and actually works well!

I just feel that I should stand my ground, bc I'm def not gonna say that there is no issue with the home button bc I know there is. 3 of my coworkers have confirmed that they notice the issue too. Also there is no way in hell I'm paying a $50 restocking fee when the unit is received is defective. Not to sound rude but you must be rich if you are willing to pay a restocking fee twice. I'm a New Yorker so I will fight tooth and nail to win my case! If enough phones have a similar issue Samsung may have to do another recall, lol.
lorenzobjuarez said:
I feel your pain man I'm equally as aggravated right now...
Here's what you should do though, if you are still within your 14-day return window just take it back to the store (with yout receipt & box) and tell them flat out that you want to return it because you just "didn't like it".
I previously returned my last Note 7, 4 days before the recalland I honestly didn't like it, so that's what I told them and they gave me a full refund with no problems. I think the issue here is that whenever you tell them there is something wrong with the phone, they always want you to go through warranty because technically "there is something wrong with it".
Since you already paid them a visit once, if anybody recognizes you & brings up your last complaint just tell them that you were comparing it to your last phone and now that you've gone used to the home button for these last couple of days there's nothing wrong with it... It was just you!
It's ridiculous that you will have to admit that you are crazy and that there is nothing wrong with the phone just so you can return it, but in the end you will win. Again, don't bring up any complaints just tell them that you did not like it and the phone works perfectly fine, they will charge you a $50 restocking fee that I will GLADLY pay again to return this trash Phone!!! They will proceed to give you a refund and just wait a couple of more days or weeks possibly even months until they get more inventory & you can buy it again and HOPE that this one is not defective.
I'm just going to play with mine for today and that is exactly what I'm going to go do tomorrow morning, I won't even bring up the home button issue.

Picked up my replacement today and I get a faint click when I press slightly on the left side of my home button like it's sticking. I could tell it felt different from my previous note 7 as soon as I pressed it. Has very slight loose movement when you push the left side up and down. It's pretty annoying.
Thank you, I mean you gave me a good alternative options...truth be told your plan is actually starting to sound pretty good just about now, lol. I realized what a hassale it would be to fight for a replacement.

I get where you're coming from in regards to standing your ground, the problem is they're not going to want to play ball with you... as you have already seen. At this point I'm not about to stay with a messed up home button phone annoying me each and every time that I press it, I don't even want to look at the darn thing!
This is an issue that not a lot of people are going to notice and it's not nearly as drastic as an exploding battery so I highly doubt this will force Samsung to do another recall; especially considering how much money they've lost already.
Either way, it was just a suggestion and I was just trying to help...

My last phone was the Z Flip. I managed to learn to open it and close it with one hand quite easily. The opening was a little awkward, with a thumb and then a 'Star Trek' flip to fully open. Closing was easy, and very satisfying after a phone call
I've been trying with the Fold. I definitely cannot open it with one hand, at least yet. Closing it is awkward. Because you must press on the screen, it really needs to be off. That's not just two hands, but a button press too.
I'm trying to learn to close it by using my rh index finger at the centre top. The reason is that there's nothing on the screen there to be pressed on. It's ok, but still awkward, even though I have big hands. Im generally ok with managing the problem. The ability to carry a tablet in my pocket makes it worthwhile to me.
How do others close, and also open, the Fold? Is it just as awkward?
Long term use could loosen the joints enough to make one-handed folding operation require lesser effort

I can't open it with one hand, either. I open it like a book. I also close it with two hands, but I can close it without turning it off, but I usually don't need to do so. I rarely use the front screen.

I would not recommend pressing your thumbs on the screen to close the device. I use bezel on both sides of the screen to close it.

I'm failing to work out how you can bend the phone inwards by only pressing on the bezel on the front of the screen.
Edit: ok, I get it, the thumbs on the bezel and push up from behind with fingers. Yes, that is safer. I have large fingers, too so I pretty much always touch the screen as well, unfortunately.
I still want to use only one hand, though.
Yes! That's how I do it... You figured out.. I've been doing it that way ever since the Fold 1. I read somewhere how pressure on the screen was a killer in that first phone.. I'm just in a habit now of doing it that way
What I know is that thingies on fold 3 is tighter than fold 2 and fold 1. Which makes it harder to open with 1 hand.

That is true Samsung has made the hinge in the Fold 3 much tighter than that on the previous versions of the Fold.
I have huge hands (can palm a basketball with ease), and I can't OPEN the phone one handed. I need another hand or something (like my chest) to grip part so I can open it.
Closing it one handed is a breeze. Just push down on the middle of the hinge on the bottom of the phone (NOT THE SCREEN) and once it starts to close, I can just close it with my hand without an issue.
