gmail IMAP versus PUSH?

hey guys,
so this gmail implementing free imap has really caused some stir evidently.
my question is this. what should i use? which one's better?
right now what happens is my gmail account forwards all email to my exchange server, hosted on my home PC. my phone then syncs with exchange using push, and more often than not i get email on my phone before it arrives on my desktop (which downloads mail from gmail using POP).
i use thunderbird on my laptop, and only access email from this one client. my phone uses exhange, as i mentioned, so its not really linked. however i like keeping things sorted in folders on my thunderbird client.
any tips? should i just switch everything over to imap or what?

lol hard work installed win2003, then exchange, set it all up, have an external IP, set up certificates for security, and voila!

solves all your dynamic IP issues!

If an Exchange server is too hard to install, you can try Kerio Mailserver..
Its very easy to configure..and it also works with pushmail..

There is one small difference between IMAP IDLE, and Exchange with PushMail - the price. IMAP IDLE was invented long time ago and always was free (but not available on free accounts and this is a new thing), and then it was "reinvented" by Blackberry and again by Microsoft. And now you can have:
1. Blackberry for monthly fee and total control od the company over your mails
2. PushMail with expansive Windows Server and Exchange + a lot of free problems
3. Totally free IMAP IDLE on your home linux server or even cheaper with gmail.
For me choice is easy

Mail2web is an online exchange server (2003) for free !
So the two alternative are for me:
mail2web: online exchange server, free, sync contact calendar tasks
vs
gmail: imap (i can't use it yet)
But, wich is better? I need only mail asap on my Hermes with minimum data transfer cost.
Any mean?

As far as I know IMAP doesn't sync contacts, calendar or tasks.....I'm going to stick with gmail-->mail2web-->phone

I do it same now. But gmail imap would be maybe cheaper... And I never use my mail2web account to write mail. If I receive a mail on gmail than I would like to answer with gmail acc instead of mail2web...

Apart from the fact that almost every mail server blocks Dynamic IP ranges, so you wont be able to send any mail..... Been there done that! lol
Wish there was a way round it because i cant get a Static

I'm currently running a mail server on a dedicated box (host @ datacenter 30€/month) under linux with courrier-imap. There is a way to implement IMAP IDLE function, that is almost the same than pushing emails.
I actualy tested it without FAM (File Alteration Monitor). Fam allow you to have a realtime email like blackberry. I don't need it, the basic IMAP_ENHANCEDIDLE do a check every minutes and update if there is a mail.
I tested this feature through telnet and it worked lovely.
Now, in order to be able to use this feature over your windows mobile, you have the choice between to softwares.
The first is vgsmail http://www.vgsmail.com/ppc/ (free trial)
This one will just enable the IMAP IDLE feature on your pocket outlook (seems to be the more elegant way to implement it)
The second is WIS Flexmail 2007 (search at google ) (free trial)
This one is a new client (i don't like to change my use personnaly)
The major problem of the both solutions is that you have to pay for it.
Does anyone can do a patch for pocket outlook to implement imap idle fonction on it ?

For (from memory) 80cents US a month mail2web allows you to set up a 'permanent from address' so it appears that the mail is coming from gmail or whereever!

don't use my exchange server for SMTP, only for PUSH. SMTP i've set up exchange to use gmail's smtp server, which is perfect. means that every email i send from my phone is automatically put into my sent mail box in my gmail account.
... and of course it's not blocked. best of all worlds
After reading through this thread i think the answer for me is simple - stick with my exchange service. didn't pay a cent for it (100% legal through my school's license too!) and it works perfectly. so why not just keep it going

While setting up Win2k3 + Exchange 2k3 w/ SP2 isn't too bad if you know what you're doing, a lot of people don't have resources to do that.
I recommend Mail2web as well. Great service! I've been using it for probably ~1.5 years now with Push email on my phone. Pretty much ever since Push came out for WM, I've been using mail2web with it.
If you want push Gmail, what I did was set up a rule on my gmail account to forward ALL email to my mail2web account, then archive it.
So now someone just emails my gmail and it gets pushed to my phone. nice and easy.

yes very very true. i took days to set it up, literally. tweak here, fix there, research here, implement there etc etc. But i guess it's different for me who's a complete computer geek and found the challange more exciting than actually solving it at the end

Problem with SMTP Auth

Hi,
I'm having some problems with default Mail application of Android under HTC Desire for sending mails through my personal mail server.
I host my own mail server with SMTP Authentication but *only* with Android Mail application it seems to ignore username/password I provided under the account settings so no authenticated session is done on the mail server and this one reject the client because of this. SASL Authentication is properly working with other clients (Windows mobile pocket outlook, Thunderbird 2 or 3, Outlook ...etc)
Do you have such other similar experience/problem with SMTP Auth within Android 2.1 please ?

Hi, the email application belongs to the Sense, so HTC should fix it. The stock Android email app works (tested on a Samsung phone with the same SMTP server) but is not available on Desire.

so we have nothing to do other than waiting and cross our fingers that HTC release a fix asap ...

Edit: Oh by the way, have no issues with my server. Auth turned on, standard SMTP, SSL off. no idea what software my host is running on the server though.....

Thks all for your informations, I also have 1.15.405.4 and so did some new tests with SSL enabled/selected this time and SMTP Auth is now working !
If I go back and disable SSL, I have no logs on my Postfix server-side about SMTP Auth and client is purely rejected.
By the way, for my curiosity I tried with the Android default Email application rhedgehog provided (thks) and with this one SMTP Auth is working with SSL selected or not ...
So, as a workaround, I finally kept SSL on but did not find yet the last word of this problem !?

I have a Samsung Vibrant Galaxy S on t Mobile. I have no pop3/smtp issues on all platforms and devices including my Blackberry 8520, 9700, and Pearl. I have two POP3/SMTP accounts that I need email to send and reviece from constantly allday. Sinc eI bought my Android phone I have had nothing but issues on both the defaul internal client and with apps like K9 for example.
Whether I am rooted or not, fresh reboot or after it has been on or idle, smtp always fails a few days after adding account and POP3 works occasionally. I have tested full and as needed syncing, other SSL ports and etc other than the recomnmended and still pop3 is sporatic and SMTP fails frequesntly a few days after thet account are created in the phone. I had zero issues on my Blackberry, I just dont understand why these phones are giving so many people issues.
?? I am begining to wonder if everyones issue is a task killer killing an app that is needed and it is not opening when needed?
?? Is there a underliying push to make people use Gmail and apps instead of the phone?
It must be a base system issue because POP3/SMTP apps behave the same way. As everyone knows Gmail works fine always. My Yahoo! Mail app works perfect as well.
WA: I just use bookmarks I placed on my Home screen to access my mail via browser.

Not sure if it is relevant, I use a service called authsmtp for all my outgoings, and it is a little irritating when being set up on Android HTC Desire froyo. The first time it tries the access and says the host isn't responding, if you then say you have ssl it then produces a checkbox saying login required and you can enter a username/passw combo. After that it works.....
Seems like the requirement to let it know you have secure access isn't geared to the first attempt to set up.

The HTC Desire Z mailclient does not support SMTP Auth with my mail server.
I checked on my mailserver to find the problem, but the phone does not try auth
at all.
Server says "220 ... ESMTP Sendmail.."
Phone sends "EHLO [..ip..]"
Server answers

...
250-AUTH DIGEST-MD5 CRAM-MD5
...
"
Phone sends "QUIT"
The Phone shows "server does not support authentication".
BTW: this phone is the only client I tested with this bug. Working clients are: Thunderbird, iPhone, iPad, aso
It seems HTC mail does not support the provided Auth methods. If anyone of you has a working setup, could you please tell me which mailserver it is or tell me what auth method
would work ?

Have you tried authsmtp as I mentioned? They were aware of the original problem I had and they may well be able to fix the Z issue.

Exchange DirectPush/ActiveSync not pushing

We run Exchange 2003 here. Push sync is apparently not working on our T-Mobile HTC Desires. The device makes no attempt to sync unless and until you visit the Mail app. We're due to be upgrading to Exchange 2010 this year but until then I'm wondering if anyone else has similar experiences or ideas for a workaround (other than changing to a 5 minute poll frequency).
Actually this seems to be just one of many things (e.g. buggy IMAP implementation) that's broken with the stock Mail app. Haven't tried a reboot yet but even if that fixes this for our phones, it's hardly a "fix"...

Go to Settings > Accounts & Sync and make sure 'Auto-sync' is checked. I was stumped for the better part of a week before I figured out why my Gmail/exchange push wasn't working - this was the reason.

Have you tried Touchdown to see if that works ok? Whilst it is a paid app, it is better suited to a corporate environment than the standard HTC offering.

@carrige: 'fraid not. Syncing is all set up correctly.
@foxmeister: Yes, TouchDown is on my radar. So far however, none of my users require Task syncing, which as far as I can see is the only particular feature advantage that TouchDown has over the HTC app (assuming the app works). Plus, TouchDown is uglier.
I appear to have found the solution though. It's obscure, so bear with me.

Push email and Outlook Web Access always worked fine, so I just filed this under "annoyances". Well, it transpires that the problem is down to a misconfiguration within IIS. From EventID.net:
Removed this error message by removing all host headers from the Default Website in IIS. Go to Properties for the default Website for IIS:
- Click on ''website'' tab.
- Click on ''advanced'' next to IP Address.
- Remove all headers except an entry for ''Default 80'' with no host header value.

Now, this doesn't make sense, since we enforce HTTPS on a custom port. Nevertheless, making this change has simultaneously stopped the annoyance logging, and resolved the push email problem on the HTC mail app.
Result!

Exchange Active Sync on HTC Desire stopped pushing
Hi Rob - got a similar problem that only started on Tuesday this week 11th and haven't been able to figure it out. Guess it must be EAS on 2003 on my home server as I haven't lost any other functionality on the phone (eg internet access data connection, SMS etc)
However I don't have the error 400 code on my server admin and trying the fix you suggested didn't work as there were no header to delete.
Any clues? Seems to be a widespread problem...? Thanks.

If you force a sync and look in your application/security logs, can you see the connection being made by the phone?

Rob - thanks for advice. I seem to have fixed the problem by deleting the acount and re-instating it. Not very scientific and doen't help understand whay it broke in the first place, but at least it work now.. Lets see how long it lasts.
BTW called Orange and whilst they were very helpful, they weren't aware of a generic problem.
Also, have now changed the APN setting which were mostly blanks so could have been these (or lack of them( that might have caused the problem.

Interesting that you resorted to removing the account, I had to do the same when my HTC Desire stopped being able to send emails. Receiving was fine, but impossible to send. Deleted account and re-installed, problem resolved.
Only issue now, which is what I was searching for when I came across this thread, is that occassionally I get emails that simply will never arrive on the handset. At home I mix between WIFI and GSM connection, and push appears to work perfectly. Today I discovered that 3 or 4 internal corporate emails of 20 or more received during my manual sync off-peak period, just will not come down to the phone. They are on the server, on my laptop, but not on the phone. Touchdown, running in paralll to Android mail client, has them perfectly.
Any ideas anyone?

For me unfortunately the conclusion is absolutely inescapable. In a corporate environment, the niggles with the stock HTC mail app are unacceptable.
But the good news is that Touchdown is only $20, which really isn't that much to pay if you take into account the overall cost of whatever package your users are on. After a short trial of Touchdown, I'm going to start deploying it to my user base shortly.
Shame on HTC for releasing the phone to market with so many bugs. But I suppose that's what we get for being early adopters...

[Q] Froyo (official) and multiple exchange accounts

I just installed the official Froyo build. Unfortunately, it looks like multiple exchange accounts is not supported.
Do any of the other 2.2 roms (e.g., Sky Raidar) support multiple exchange accounts (preferably with sense - I actually like it)?
Also, assuming another ROM will work, what is the best way to flash the ROM without losing my settings. The official build updated without the need to wipe (only issue I found so far is I had to uninstall/reinstall swype). If I install another ROM, does titanium backup do a good job of restoring the phone's app and settings? (don't want to have to redo all my screens, etc).

I've never known any device to sync multiple exchange accounts. But this is my first Android device coming from iPhone.

Unfortunately, the HTC Mail application in general does not allow for multiple exchange accounts...

Is there a way to get the non HTC stock mail application installed (or do any of the vanilla roms support multiple accounts)? Unfortunately, I assumed Froyo would enable multiple accounts (I am already using touchdown and the native support to get 2 accounts, but I have a few additional ones).

You know what they say when you assume. My only recommendation would be using Touchdown which you already do. Depending on what you use your exchange accounts for (work or personal) you can setup some forwarding rules to have everything come into one spot. Only thing with that is it is against businesses policy (or it should be) to forward company property like that.

The stock Email.apk in /system/app from CM6 works fine on the incredible. The ONLY PROBLEM is that when you read an email from somewhere else, the notification is not removed from the status bar, and it stays there until you re-open the application. My only gripe.

Interesting. I am awaiting the OTA and use the stock 2.1 for accessing an exchange server. Hotmail is setup as a separate account. I heard Hotmail will go live this week with Activesync support, so will this mean I will have to choose which one I want, giving up one, beig hotmail obviously.

How would I go about installing this? Is it as simple as installing other apps? I used the CM6 ROM for a couple weeks and loved it but random reboots forced me back to my previous ROM.

Hotmail doesn't support IMAP which is a large part of why people want to set it up as an activesync account. Pop just sucks...
It's sad that the HTC client doesn't support more than one activesync account, the Pre they gave me at works handles up to 8 I believe (have 3 currently setup on it).
That is not to say that the Pre's activesync implementation is better, I wish it would let me choose which parts of the account I want to sync rather than forcing an all or nothing approach, but it is nice to have real push email on all my accounts with it.
The Pre can sync tasks as well... I wish HTC would implement this.

Improved Email App
I installed Improved Email from the marketplace. It supports multiple Exchange accounts and syncs email, calendar and contacts.

Is anyone able to setup Hotmail with Exchange Activesync on the Arc?

As much as I try I seem to be failing miserably. Tried by just opening Native email app and by going to home, settings, Accounts & Sync, Add Account, Exchange ActiveSync and am trying:
email & password, Next.
Domain left blank
username = email addy
password,
server = m.hotmail.com
both SSL boxes ticked,
but I keep getting:
Setup could not finish
Cannot connect to server.
Im going out of my mind now!

Actually a friend of mine was trying that with his Arc but no success.. seems working fine with POP3 for some reason ... wish I could help

That's interesting, has anybody actually had any success connecting to any exchange activesync server using the arc? I only have access to hotmail's exchange, but this works fine on touchdown, just not the native app...

I'm connected to my University's exchange server (hosted on the Hotmail cloud) and it works fine. Make sure to use your full email address for your username.

Just set up a hotmail account too. Works without a hitch.

I want to set hotmail up with PUSH email... not PULL(POP3) which way I can set it up...

I use enhanced email apply and exchange (push) and footprint set up fine.
Wish it had more ram or a way to permanently kill tasks until required.

I'm using the default mail client to connect to my corporate exchange server via activesync. No problems at all. Exchange Server 2003 though. Don't have 2007 or higher to test on.

I don't think Hotmail supports that. Unless you know of some plan where MS charges you money.

It does. Microsoft started supporting it a little while ago. Only seems to work with mobile phones atm, ie android, apple etc. It doesnt seem to work with outlook without that hotmail connector.

Why? They're right... It's not SE's job to set you up with Hotmail.
Did you look elsewhere online?

To be fair, I did have a major bounce around the web after I tweeted SE and found the same information as you.
What I was asking them was why hotmail wasn't working with the stock email client but working with others. And that was the reply.
