Ok, my battery is weird it doesnt last long. it dropped from abut 95% to 70% over night, with checking email every 30 minutes with k9 and the mail app every 4 hours. My phone doesn't last very long either, I haven't tested it fully. I always keep charging it, when im in the house.
I bought it from T-Mobile and i could swap it. Should I?

Mine's the same. I didn't think it would be worse than my old BB Bold for battery life, but it really is very poor. I don't think you have a fault, it's just the way it is.
I wondered about closing background apps but I've read that having them open doesn't impact battery life. I do have a few background things going on though that will affect it, so maybe I need to consider if I really need them or not (frequent email syncing, contacts/calendar syncs, etc.).

Have you put the phone down for long periods in-between uses, or have you spent a fair time writing emails or just playing with it? I've spent a fair time on mine but not constantly, and no more than I used to with my BB Bold. I used to writing emails constantly on my Bold and the battery would last a good day, but until I'm used to this keyboard I won't be doing that on my Desire.
So It won't make a difference if i swap it? I also didn't do the standard charge at the start. Couldn't resist playing with it. So It was on charge while playing with it. Could that make a difference?
I'm in work a lot and I'm not constantly on it - just check for emails/SMSs every hour or so so prob spends a lot of the time in standby. I'm on it more on the weekends but it still lasts well into day 2

If it works otherwise then I doubt there is a fault that would cause the battery to run down but nothing else not to work.
Not charging the battery at the start is one of those things that some say makes a difference, other say it doesn't. With Lithium-Ion batteries I always thought they didn't need that initial charge, but I can't say for sure. Anyway, what might help is if you did a full charge then a complete discharge (use it until the phone turns off) then a full charge again. With older batteries at least, that tended to help them last longer.
There a a few threads on this alread here and on the Android Forums.
There is a problem where the phone when charged left on, only goes upto 98%. However the phone will soon drop to 90% and lower quickly, indicating the phone has not charged properly.
If you unplug and reconnect, it will go back to 100% but almost as quick as tying your laces, it will go from 100 to 98% and continue to drop.
It could be faulty batteries.
I was hoping the FW update would fix but it hasn't as I found out last nite.
Or should I just buy another battery?
I've been having similar issues,
I get much much better battery life without mobile networks on, and alot of application crashes/phone reboots to get it work like I expected.
Took some data:
1hr of phone in sleep mode w/ mobile internet on = 4% battery
1hr of phone in sleep mode w/out mob internet on = >1% battery
So I can get a good two days if I don't have any internet with moderate use, but about 16 hours with internet always on and moderate usage. If I really 'rag' it and use alot, I can get about 50% done in a few hours (not constant use either, just alot of google goggles mainly!)
This coupled with the crashes and reboot made me get an exchange, I'm just hoping it's better, and really hoping its not worse..

I will give that new battery a loooong first charge, see if it helps.

Won't help, once it's at 100% the charging will stop. There is no such thing as 'long charging' li-ion batteries or 'trickle charge' a li-ion battery.
You can try to do a full first charge (until the green light burns) and then fully discharge (until the phone goes off). Then fully charge again. This will calibrate the battery chip and make sure you see the correct percentage.
If battery life is still no good then it's because you use the phone too much. Read: constant weather updates, friendstream updates, push mail and other stuff that constantly use the mobile connection. Also turn off gps unless you need it.
Turning off those services and turning off the 'always on mobile connection' can double your battery life (read: standby time).
It's not something magical, it's completely normal. If you want the phone to do a lot, it will obviously use a lot of battery.
Just for the sake of it, put the phone in airplane mode. You will be amazed how long it will last.
It's the main problem with modern mobile devices. Battery usage and capacity are no longer in good balance. What we need is more compact batteries that have more capacity.
At the moment it's clearly a comprimise between battery size (thus capacity) and battery usage. It's up to you to see how much you want to comprimise.
And so far, with every HTC phone, after a few (radio rom) updates battery life increased.
And... what everyone seems to forget, when you first get your phone you will fiddle with it.. a lot.. And once you have it for like a week or two, you start using it differently. Usually ending up with better battery life!
Try to run it down to around 5-10% after each full charge, but don't let it go completely dead if you can avoid it. Do this a few times and you will notice an improvement. Plus of course, when the novelty wears off and you use it less the same will happen.
Back when I got my Touch HD it would only just last a day, but by the time I was on the upgrade path I could get 3 or 4 days out of it!
Just to confirm, I was a bit worried at first about the battery life of the Desire. The first 2 days I could only manage to get 7 / 8 hours out of it. When I turned data sync off at night, it still lost 40% of the battery .. doing absolutely nothing.
However as mentioned before, I'm now on day 6 and now I can easily get 36 hours of browsing / texting / calling 2 hours + / even playing occasionally games. At night, without data sync, it drops just 4%.
So if you're worried about your newly acquired Desire's battery sucks, It really needs some calibration. After a few days it'll work as you wish.
T-mob battery
Hmmm.. Not sure what T-mob is up to. They promised me a £20 credit to by a battery (they didnt have any in stock) then I received the battery in post. I called 150 and they confirmed the £20 credit is still there for the next bill...
I couldnt be happier with T-Mob! Besides this I got 100txt/100min, plus 60 min included to Eurasia, Internet and 40 free txt to Europe = all for £10 a month!
Now I just need a case for it... waiting for the PdAir one to come, had one for my Compact IV and loved it. Its the flip one that opens upwards not down, so wont mess with the hardware buttons.

I got my Desire on Tuesday, first use was on Wednesday.
Yesterday (Friday) I put the Desire into Airplane Mode - I deactived everything. Turned off WLAN, mobile Internet, Syncing off manually before I went into that mode, just to be sure. When I went to bed, I had 72% battery left. When I woke up...50%...seriously, what the f...?!?!
8 hours of doing absolutely nothing uses 22% battery?! It's really annoying at the moment, absoluetly unusuable unless I'm home and know I can plug it in any second. When I'm out, I don't even dare to use mobile Internet, because even without it it only lasts till I get home (no WLAN, no mobile internet, just using it as a "telephone"...).

This isn't a dumb phone, it is running powerful components and 8 hours doing "nothing" is relatively long time and the power usage of keeping those components powered at idle levels is going to add up no matter what. If you can't bear to turn the phone off if you can't control your usage, carry a charger or battery you should have got a dumb phone.
Bear in mind that the full capacity of the battery won't be reached until several charge/discharge cycles have been done, especially when you are using the battery for the first time on a new phone or on a phone with updated firmware. I noticed this while flashing custom ROMs on a previous handset. I'm sure we will also notice improved battery performance when firmware updates become available.

Today was my first day at work since i got my Desire on Sat. So it was the day without regular charging.
Firstly, reception was poor as compared to what i was getting with Touch Pro 2. Same network (Orange), same place, less signal bars and less 3G coverage.
Secondly, unplugged phone 7 o'clock this morning, 100% charged. All day only had time for couple of calls (10-15mins). Used internet (3G when available) for max 20-30mins. Tried couple of games for 15-20 mins and at 7 o'clock at night, the battery was 15%. This is not a heavy use by my standards. Used to do a lot more on Touch Pro2 and battery used to last 2-3days. (I know the capaciy difference btw Desire and TP2 battery but still, Desire should last atleat > 24hours)
Not sure if all these issues are related to Orange ROM/Radio. Will we (on Orange) get OTA firmware update like T-mobile, which has apparently improved their battery life? If not then ...... :-(. Not satisfied with the battery life. Shame it is such a good phone but battery life and signal strength is putting me off.
Whats the fun if you have a "superphone" in your pocket but cannot use it to its full potential due to these two isuues.

I totally agree, there are other posts telling us to turn off or reduce all sorts of settings, its ridiculous that you would have to run any phone at less than its full potential just to compensate for a poor battery.
Sure you could buy a second battery but if that was necessary then they should put two in the box
If you leave gps on then you are asking for trouble, a lesser extent wifi. Having a toggle on off isn't such a hardship though. Poor signal hammers the battery too.
I easily last the working day (7-7) with an hour of music and 2 hours surfing and a smattering of calls and texts.

Come on guys, if you have a laptop, and you turn on bluetooth, wi-fi, play some games etc, it WILL run the battery down faster. It's just common sense. Just because this phone does heaps of things, dosn't mean it will last forever. As phones get more features, they are getting worse battery life - in general. And android is a data centric device, I would get used to it, or simply turn off some synching features if you need to get through more than half a day. Or perhaps get a spare battery etc.
Just out of curiosity did you have your previous phone to constantly sync throughout the day for time, email, google account, marketplace updates, location, weather using gps, 3g, hsdpa, accelerometer etc? Remember some of these connect are activated every 5 mins or so. Will make it worse if you have poor reception. COMMON SENSE PPL!
My issue is that even after the T-Mobile update, last night I charged phone on this time and it would only get to 98% again. Then drop down quickly.
If I charge it off, It seems to be ok (although I will test this again.)

My battery life is woeful (TMo uk, updated firmware). I've been trying to figure it out using Juice Plotter to record power usage. Basically, whatever I'm doing, if it's on the battery falls off a cliff - I'd say 10% per 30m and my first impression is that it makes little difference whether networking is enabled or not. This makes little sense to me, I've always found in the past that 3G is just about the most power intensive activity on the smartphone, but it's consistent with some experiences I had flashing roms on my Blackstone - some of them would just run the battery down, others would go for ages. One hypothesis is that when a phone is in that kind of "sick" power state, the drain is not really related to which facilities you're using, but something deeper - perhaps the CPU is running full throttle all the time, or something else. I have no idea what's going on right now but I know I have an unusable phone which lasts half the time my Blackstone did with heavier use. I think many others have the same problem and I wonder if there's a bad batch. Bad news if so as we'd have trouble proving it and getting exchanges.
My next step I think will be to hard reset and run it in a very basic mode for a while, maybe some of the apps are causing it.
I'm also finding out that battery life improves dramatically after the 5th 6th charge. When I first got my Desire I could barely make it through the day, after properly charging and letting it discharge all the way to 10-15% now I get 18-20h of battery life with wi-fi on non stop (but with the setting to to turn itself off after 15mins of inactivity).
I was very worried about this when I first got the phone, but now it's starting to be better and better at battery life. I know my demands from a smartphone when I buy it and if a phone get's me through the day I'm OK with that, plus I have chargers at home, in my car, at work, so it's not a problem
I've got one of the very first batch of T-mobile Desires that were shipped on 26th March. It has been updated with the T-mobile 1.15.110.11 patch.
I last charged it on Saturday afternoon. I've only had to start charging it again this morning Tuesday. I've been making a few calls, probably 10-15 minutes total. A few texts. Browsing with G and 3G, maybe a few of hours worth in total. Little bit of Bluetoothing, though that's only a couple of minutes worth. I've had it down the pub a few hours where the T-mobile signal isn't brilliant, so it will have been doing a little "shouting" to find and communicate with the nearest T-mobile mast.
But that means it's lasted a good 66 hours admittedly with fairly moderate use. GPS, Wifi and Bluetooth are turned off unless needed. And it's not regularly Syncing with Facebook, Twitter and all that stuff. The only regular syncing is the weather.
Not sure if these are bugs with some hardware/software or standard functionality with your usages. I'm getting excellent battery life with my usage patterns/settings and far happier with this than with any of my previous devices, since this adds an exorbitant amount of power-draining functionality and flexibility over them too.
- Heaviest use is netting 28-33 hours.
- Typical use is getting minimum 3-3.5 days.
- Light use (also the norm for me me) lasted 5.5-6 days.
- Basic inconsistent call/message/email/net/stocks/news/stop watch/GPS/ compass/notepad/office/weather/ vid/pic/audio throughout the day kept the battery at 84% after 24 hours. 3G off, using WiFi. I don't keep any but the needy apps/settings running BTW.
- Charges to 100% always and stays up there consistently as expected.
However there is a pertinent aspect yet unmentioned;

I'm deffo leaning now that there are faulty batteries out there causing the problem. I can get good life if I can get the battery to charge properly. but when it doesn't battery lasts hardly half a day. I don't use any apps that require automatic updates (all manual or off). But net on drains it very quickly (if I leave data on). Faulty Batteries I feel.
My Desire has a better ability to hang on to a weak signal than my other phones. I am on T-mobile. Battery life is adeqaute, in that, I can get through a day of use before a charge is needed. Will switch-off GPS and see what happens -I never had GPS on all the time on my other Smartphones.
Coming from a G1 that could barely make it through the day on standby this phone seems pretty good.
I got mine last friday it has just come off of it's third charge. I charged it for 3 hours when I got it, ran it right down >10% then left to charge up fully again.
I installed JuiceDefender and bought the UltimateJuice upgrade as soon as I got the phone.
Day 2 (with JuiceDefender) - battery lasted 13h27m, thats with WiFi, phone calls, MMS, 3g, internet browsing/showing it off to mates in the pub and then listening to an album on spotify in the car.
Considering this is a new battery and it still needs several charges before it is working at full capacity, I think that is pretty good for a smart phone! It can only get better, right?
JuiceDefender - I can't recommend this app enough, I don't want to mess about with Task Killers (that don't really save battery), I don't want to stop stuff syncing (because thats the whole point of this phone) but I want to optimize my battery life to get me through the day and this app does it so well!
I've currently got it setup to turn 2g/3g off when in standby but set to turn data back on every 5mins for 30s to allow apps to sync. You can specify a longer interval which will obviously save more battery over the course of a day. The phone connects back to a 2/3g connection so quick when you bring it out of standby so your not waiting around to get back online.
Switch on WiFi at known locations - I have this setup because at home, 3g signal is a bit patchy and it probably uses more battery constantly trying to get a 3g signal all the time, than it does if it is just connected to WiFi.
Turn data off between 2am-8am while I am sleeping.
Turn data off when battery is below 15% - with my G1 it would hit 15% just as I'd be heading home on the train in the evening, so I'd turn data off just so I could send a few texts or so I had just enough battery to make a call. So I figured I might as well use that last 15% battery for basic phone operation and give me enough battery to get home! I probably don't need this with the Desire though.

WOW, can I have your battery please ...
What did u do to get this powerhouse. Was it weaker in the begining and got better with charges or was it like this from the begining?
I dont use GPS at all. Only for navigation, when in car and then it is on charge. Normal day.. no gps, no auto data connection - do it manually when internet connecttion is neede. But battery doesn't last a day, merely 12-14 hours. Charged 3 times yet, only 3 days old Desire.
I cant find juice defender in the market?
When I first got my Hero I remember my battery life being terrible, most of it was down to fiddling all the time, however over time my usage changed and the battery had been charged a lot the life was a lot better. Also there were a number of radio upgrades installed, which probably helped.
Since I've got my Desire, the "desire" to fiddle hasn't stopped and I feel as if I'm in the same situation as I was with the Hero.
My opinion is that over time the battery life will be better, as with the Hero.

Yes both Ultimate Juice and Juice Defender are in the Market.
Juice defender was missing for me a couple of hours ago. But actually, when I installed it thinkgs started to go wrong for me. May be a coincidence, or may be a conflict with some other sw.
Following shocking power drain, I have hard reset, and left it with nothing syncing and all networking disabled. As you'd expect, battery level is barely falling in standby. Now to start adding things back in and see what efects it has. First step is to spend 30 mins browsing over 3g, previously this would take out 10% of my battery.

Any pointers for increasing battery life? I've disabled live wallpapers, picked a dark background, set friendfeed etc to update every 4 hours, and it's still not great. Phone is new, should I expect battery life to improve as battery gets used a bit?
Are task killers worth using? Seems to be some debate that they might actually cause more problems than they solve.
I've gone through forum and found lots of generic advice but would appreciate any ideas people have tried on the Desire.
Do I *really* need to wturn off wifi when I'm not using it? Isn't the phone smart enough to not use it when a known-network isn't present?

From my experience i would advise against having a task killer running.
I used to have one running on my N1 and thought, "Great, i can free up memory". But you really don't need to do that with Android.
Having disabled it from running, I get to teh end of the day and I have between 75 and 85 battery, after having done a fair few phone calls, some net fun and data access.
I still have a task killer but I use it infrequently and dont have it running - i let it "kill" itself after running it.
I found they take up a good deal of battery life. But that's just my opinion.

Of course!
The classic task killers kill services that are sleeping and do no eat battery.
A few minuts later, on some receivers ( connexion to internet, message or SMS received) these services will restart, and that's where they are eating battery.
If you hadn't killed them, they would have done that without eating battery.
Waking up and then going to sleep is really less battery-eater than restarting the whole service.
So, please forget about all these task killers or do that in a smart way. Only kill your game or the latest app you used!

Although the battery life might not be as good as some other "imore ipopular" handsets at least you can buy a second reasonably cheap battery if you know you will be a couple of days away from a possible charge (camping etc).

You serious? I am guessing you're referring to the iPhone, the smartphone that is on charge more times than its off charge?
My Desire hands down beats an iPhone for battery life by almost 100% - only ever got 1 day of an iPhone at best - Desire is approaching nearly 2 days full usage, I am no lite user either.
For battery life the Desire is one, if not the best out there at the moment.

My Desire has been up for 21.5 hours and has 3 bars left (according to the settings battery meter) but I've been driving around most of the day with spotify on listening to music, quite a bit of surfing, emailing, calls and a few texts.
I reckon it's probably got another 5+ hours to go yet.
My phone is quite new and battery life is starting to improve daily now.
Hmm... struggle to get more than 5 or 6 hours out if mine under relatively light usage, maybe 20 mins calls and 3 or 4 texts, if I use browser it flatten quicker still, the battery use status usually says Android OS itself has used most battery.
Hoping it will improve, at moment it is poor compared to my TD2 with a smaller battery

still was luck to get a full day from it. however i went to europe the other week (from uk) so turned all roaming data and syncing off and it lasted 4 days.
fingures crossed battery life increases on the desire, gor a car charger on orded fron fleabay so i should survive
i loved my G1, and found it hard to upgrade, first time thats ever happend, but wow this desire is differnt class, my wife has the iphone and is green and my 16 year old son is gutted he got the hero only 6 months ago.

I've been running my desire for nearly two weeks now.
As usual WiFi & gps are the main culprits.
On average, I have exchange & GMAIL push on 3G all day with a bit of Facebook, sms & several min long calls without going past the three quarter mark by 5:30pm . However as soon as I switch on WiFi at home for browsing, reading news feeds, market etc, bang goes my battery!
Turn off 3G and sync and use it as a phone.......great battery life!

Yea not sure how you guys get good battery out of it. I have everything off, dark background, no synching due to having mobile network off (only thing setup to sync is email every 2 hours). I take a few phone calls maybe 30-40mins, do about 15 mins of surfing, 30 mins of music through headphones at low volume, and a game for 30 mins. That pretty much concludes my battery life for the day (is usually at around 20% left by the time I get home).
I find if I browse the market and download/install apps, my battery will go down very quickly.
Got my desire for a week now and it lasts me 2 days woth some movies, wifi and messaging. if i go even lighter, only messaging and calls it lasted me almost 4 days. it has great battery in my opinion, better than my old hd2 and even better then my old old diamond
Over in General we found an issue with the calendar app keeping the phone from going into sleep mode - That could be a cause for poor battery life.

My Desire have no problem on battery so far tho, 1½ day with normal use is no problem. litle use i can use it around 2 days, but with alot off things running i would say for sure it works over a full working day.
Mine has been running for 20 hours now, I have mainly been calling, texting, surfing the net (mainly facebook), and playing a game a couple of times.
I'm not really sure whether this is good or not, I would rather it lasted longer than this, as it is due for a charge within the next few hours, and this is a bit of an awkward time to need to charge it. If I wasn't off work today I'd have a dead phone before I got home.
I don't like to charge mine before it tells me too, I like to think it'll improve the battery life over time? Is this right?
those batteries are not affected by memory effect. charging everytime you can is better than drain battery to 0%
HTC have said there is a software issue with battery levels hench the charging issues. Fix in the future they suggested.
Weather this effects the actual life of battery not sure.

At the beginning, everyone agreed that the battery life was god awful, and a month or so in everyone reported that the battery life was outstanding!
I can confirm this, to start with it wouldnt last me a day, by the end of it i could leave 3g and wifi on all day with everything running in the background and get a good 2 full days out of it!
I just received the desire yesterday, i gave it a full overnight charge and i must report that for the first charge the battery life looks very promising
I have used the phone VERY heavily even for me with about 100 texts, an hour talking, an hour on the internet and syncing every 15 mins or so and i have 2 bars of battery left, and i said, the battery is only going to get better!
You should look at power management tips for the HD2 as most of them apply, for example disabling 'automatic backlght' and setting it yourself because that alone can add about 30% to your battery life.
currently at 2 days 15 hours with 6/10 battery bars left.
i have gps/wifi/internet disabled and turn them on with the settings widgets when i want to use them. screen brightness at about 20%
the battery is great IMO
Guys could u please tell if I should when receiving my phone charge it directly (full charge) or it's better to empty it completely and then charge it ?

look it is same like brand new commputer (whit very good graphic card, processor, memory, MB) - you need good and strong power supply without it is crap ...
if you need good long working phone buy something else like :hmm: i dont know what maybe NOKIA with small BW display

I love my SGS and will not being going back to Nokia, also love andriod - just hoping the official release will let me have use for one full day - not too much to ask I dont think
I get 2 days of moderate to high usage with JPC. I think it uses less battery because the GSM signal is better, but the screen uses more power, is always over 90% in battery stats.

For me it all comes down "display on" time.
if using 3G/edge i get 4,5h
if wifi then 5,5h (no difference if im using it during 1 day or 4 days)

Just thought I'd say, incase you didn't know, the web browser has it's own brightness setting. That could be killing the battery.
I, for one, already set the brightness to the first level for all aplications that have brightness setting, and still the display sucks the battey like crazy, at list with JPC. With other FW it drops even to 40%.

Battery drain was ridiculous with me. The first night I went to sleep I remember my phone was nearly fully charged, when I woke up at morning it had used around 50%... that is, 50% of the battery for around 6 or 7h just sitting in IDLE! When I actually USED the phone it could barely handle 10h with a full charge, and that's with very moderate usage. I had to leave the phone charing all the time to survive a day with it (charging in my car, charging every time I stopped near an AC outlet, etc). And yeah, the funny thing was noticing how exaggeratedly high the screen battery drain was, even though I wasn't using the screen all that much...
Some other symptoms of the high battery drain:
-Charging the phone took FOREVER with the phone being used, took a LOT of time with the phone sitting Idle, but if I turned the off the battery would actually charge very fast... that proved that the phone was draining so much energy even the AC charger (or USB outlet) couldn't effectively charge the battery while supplying power to the phone...
-The phone got HOT very easily...
How did I solve it?
Well, yesterday I decided I would reflash my device. I did a full reflash (as I always do) including a re-repartion. Now the funny thing that I noticed was that my phone actually wouldn't flash! It would always crash at the Galaxy S welcome screen... I have never flashed it using my notebook (since I'm traveling), but I used the exact same procedure I always use with my desktop back home, for some reason it wasn't working. Maybe some corrupt file? I re-downloaded ALL files (that is, Odin with the 803 pit file, and the JPC files)...
For my surprise, this time my phone hanged in a green screen, and it was really scary. I even thought perhaps the Nokia USB cable I was using was causing some kind of incompatibility problem, but that would make no sense at all... so I entered the recovery menu in my phone and reset EVERYTHING, and tried flashing it one LAST time (this time closing ALL background apps in my notebook, to avoid any problems)... and there it went, a perfect flash, as easy as they go with my desktop PC back home.
1st thing I did was a hardreset, and then I reflashed it again with Doc's RomMod V2 (was using V1 the day before), and new hardreset in the sequence. Then I changed as little as possible in the phone configurations, I just turned everything off (GPS, wifi, and even the data connection through the power button shortcut), and went to sleep...
For my surprise, the next day I checked the phone's battery use, it had drained only ~4-5% for more then 10hours, this means it would, at least in theory, be able to last for days and days in this setup...
So I installed my apps again (not that I have many), did lagfix, turned widgets and network connection back on... and it has been working like a breeze, although battery drain can still be considered high, it's nowhere close to being as bad as it was before I flashed it, now at least the battery will last a full day with a charge @ my standards of usage, that's good enough for me...
One thing I did change, I remember my screen setup was always at 10/30min for shutdown, I left it like that because I'm always using the phone in situations where the screen will constantly shut down at my face, and that annoyed me... well, this time I actally left the stock 30 seconds for screen shutdown, not sure if it has anything related, but one of the things I noticed before was that my IDLE battery-drain was as high as you'd expect from a phone that had it's screen on all the time... maybe some bug makes the phone drain screen power even with the screen turn off, let's say if you have the 30min turn-off config, your screen will continue to drain power for 30min (and there you have the reason for so much screen draw in the stats), even though the screen is turned off... despite my hardware knowledge telling me that a black screen should NOT be draining power from your phone battery, you never know how far a software bug can fck things up hardware-wise, so I wouldn't be surprise if that actually DID happen...
I could even try setting my screen back to 30min-turnoff just to check if the battery drain will go back to insane levels.. but the fact is that I'm scared of messing it up again, it's working fine the way it is, why mess it up? I figured out some things that get messed up with this phone appear to only get fixed with a new firmware flash, and I really don't feel like having to flash my phone every two days...
Either way, I hope others here can fix their battery drain... it's just my tip: try reflashing, leave everything as stock as you can (only thing I did was Doc's RomMod v2, and later Ryan ZA's lagfix, none of them seem to be related to JPC's battery drain), and see if it helps...

After a week of using JPC I don't see any real difference in battery usage from the original stock rom and JP3, I charge the phone every second night ( battery is usually around 25% at this point).
My usage isn't that high, I have a couple of notifications running and a weather widget that updates hourly, its my alarm clock, my mp3 player to and from work (about 90 minutes a day), I make and receive 4-5 calls a day and send and receive a dozen texts a day, I check face book 3-4 times a day and on a daily basis someone gets a 10-15 minute demonstration of the beauty of this phone(note: don't let a taxi driver play with your phone whilst in heavy traffic, even if it gets a confession that it makes his iphone look like a piece of crap).
As far as screen time outs are concerned, I set mine at 1 minute but always turn the display off manually when I finish doing something with it including after I have started the music player (btw I use bluetooth headset to listen to music but not for phone conversations).
The highest display percentage I have seen is about 85% but the is usually tied in with using gps or browsing, on a day I don't use gps or browsing display is much lower, on a day that the display is pretty much off it drops to about 10-15% usage.
This phone is the first, of the several pda/smart phones I have owned over the years, that I haven't had to charge every day.
Id battery usage is not a problem for me on JPC, 8hrs idle ( sleeping ) and I still got 100% started to use the phone and it rapidly dropped.. now im playing a 2hr movie and see if i can get it to loop for 2-3 times before it shuts off.. if it reaches 6hrs then i would consider the battery usage the same.
Please turn off the GPS and a-GPS....
You will get a much better battery life.....

I am lucky to even get 12 hours with minimal use. No calls, just some texting and maybe browsing my bank website. Screen is always the killer for me, even on 20% brightness. If I go lower the screen actually flickers.
I bought the red HTC Chichitech batteries and they didn't help me at all.
Tried overclocking module, didn't change much.
The only app that ever shows any significant battery use (over 5%) is Maps, when I use maps.

I am rooted, S-OFF, using the Sense Modaco ROM. Battery usage was no better with the Stock Bell Rom before rooting or S-OFF.
My main concern is the screen flickering at low brightness. it's as if it's unable to decide on a specific level of brightness and makes me question if it's actually saving any power.
I set my phone to Auto brightness and I am going to see if that is actually worse of if it's on par with 20%.
Ugh - just realized there is another thread pretty much all about this. I thought it was a different issue. Still, does anyone know if there is a better batch of phones or something? I have a FutureShop warranty so it'd be easy enough for me to replace if it will actually provide a solution
No-one has posted anything, to my knowledge, about a different batch of phones having better battery life. I would check out the other threads about battery life (including those on the G2 side too) and see if you can get yours to last better. But it could just be something faulty on your phone/battery.
Auto-brightness would make it even worse..because there is some type of bug or something that isn't making it function like it should. I was also getting terrible battery life until I followed some of these steps: http://www.goodandevo.net/2010/05/20-tips-to-improve-htc-evo-4g-battery-life.html
Biggest killers are any widgets that are constantly updating..or facebook/twitter apps that are constantly updating. I am considering waiting a month or so and then having mine replaced. Unless I managed to figure something else out. My HTC Legend had better battery life.

The reason I want to try auto or higher brightness is to see if lowering it was actually saving me any battery life. I am curious if there's a driver or display issues that causes it to use the same amount regardless of the setting. So far I don't seem to be running out any faster @ auto than I was at 20%, but it hasn't been a long enough time to tell for sure.
Also I am unable to do the battery tip for the evo because once I turn off the phone and go to charge it again, it's instantly green. But I am going to try it anyway even though it's green.
Since writing the first post I used the OC module to get my phone to 1.2ghz. I have SetCPU set to run on boot with the onDemand setting. I have a profile that says to slow the CPU when the screen is off. From what I've read it doesn't make a ton of difference with this particular phone, but we'll see...

Yep, that's what I found too, when you try and charge it thinks it's already charged and goes green straight away again. But as you said, worth a try.
I just wanted to report back and say that I had my phone replaced. So far so good:
- No screen flicker issue at low brightness
- Battery has lasted nearly 20 hours with moderate-heavy use (played NFS Shift, setup basically everything on the phone after rooting, installed all my apps, backups, flashed some roms, 20+ texts, 3-4 short calls, showing people random apps.)
If it's not all in my head then this is definitely much better now!
Curious. It seems that everyone who reports the screen flickering problem has poor battery life.
Defective displays?
I feel my battery life is pretty bad as well. I've unplugged the phone this morning at 7 AM. Now it's 2 PM, and I'm at 37%. In between, the only things I've done are: send/receive a few emails and chat on gtalk. Brightness is at 40%, animations are turned off, wifi and gps location off. Using latest Cyanogenmod (6.1.1) and have no screen flicker issues
Edit: 17 minutes later, it's now at 27%
How long have you had the phone for?
Initially the first few days I got the phone, battery life was really bad, could drain in a few hours.
After a week or two of use, I now have reasonable battery life, the phone can last all day with light usage and still have lots of juice left. Actually I think if you make a few calls and a few txts, battery could last 2 days. If you play with it, one day for sure but you need to plug in over night.
(if you're talking to me) It's quite new, just picked it up on Friday actually. Also I've kept on researching, and it seems that poor coverage (like I have at work, from 7 til 3) tends to drain the battery even more, since the phone keeps switching between HSPA, 3G, etc.
I had my first one for about a month at least. This replacement was from Saturday.
Today I've had my phone unplugged since 8am, it's 5:30pm and I have 45% battery left, but the screen is the #2 user. Standby is #1 @ 40% of my battery usage, due to over 4 hours of time without a signal. The screen is only 24% and has been on for 48 minutes. Voice calls is #3 at 23% battery usage, with 23mins of calling.
My other phone would have died by now.
Also I spent an hour of streaming bluetooth audio to my car. Bluetooth doesn't even register on the battery usage. I've never seen it use more than 2% and it's always on. I am not sure why people say it uses a lot.
Just want to share my experience.
I too had poor battery life. Stock Bell ROM. Got to 3:00 pm and it used to die. Use this for work. Pushing data all day from Exchange server, bluetooth on all day because I'm in and out of the car, talk on average 30 minutes per day, texting, surfing, tethering, blah blah. Believe it or not, my old Omnia II would get me thru the day no problem.
I was also tempted to return it. But I decided to try a few things. Installed Set CPU and a task killer at the same time. Shut down as many tasks as possible on start up. Widgets and accounts, except Exchange-push, run and sync every hour. I get about 40% battery by dinner. I am happy now .
I'm quite happy with my Desire Z's battery life, It lasts for about 36 hours with moderate use. I have Juicedefender and Ultimatejuice installed, data or wifi are opened only when an app needs data connection, this increased my battery life by 10 hours or sth like that. Nice app.
I had terrible battery life until I went overseas. It is a stock Bell ROM, but I arrived in Spain Monday and am using a Spanish SIM card.
My battery life has increased from 14 hours with Bell's 3G signal to my current 27 hours and 35% remaining battery using GSM and WiFi always on. Funny thing is that no matter where I am it says the screen is by far my biggest power drain.
Where did you buy your Desire Z and how did you get it replaced? I'm with Bell and they would take mine to send out for "repair" but not sure if that will do anything. This will take 3-6 weeks apparently and I'm not sure if they it is worth it.

No WiFi.
Brightness to about 30%.
Juice Defender is installed and I'm surfing and just the regular stuff, but even if it's just in standby, it's taking a lot of power (display takes most)

I bought mine at FutureShop since I didn't think Bell would let me without buying at least a month of service (or being an existing customer). I also purchased FutureShop's extended warranty which is how I was able to get it swapped for a new one so quickly.
I use the extended battery for the evo. Lasts about 1.5 days with ass loads of use. Just have to trim the plastic edges a bit.

I have a couple of those red chichitech batteries but I wasn't able to notice any improvement with the problem phone.
My Desire Z also has a flickering screen at lowest brightness, and with moderate use it dies after about 12 hours max. Even on lowest brightness the screen ueses 59% battery. I rarely manage to make it through the day without having to charge the phone. Im on stock ROM with latest OTA (1.72) btw.
Gonna have it replaced next week just cause of the flickering screen. Has anyone tried the 1700mAH battery from seidio?
I've always been impressed by the battery life on Defy ever since I owned it. I haven't owned other smartphones before to be able to make a true comparison but using electronic devices for a long time I can tell the battery usage on Defy can be impressive. However, there were times I noticed the battery was drained so quickly.
In my latest watchful examination of battery usage I have achived to use only 30% of the battery for more than two days. Here is a summary of my usage in the past two days;
4 Hours Music Playback (PowerAmp)
30 Mins wireless
About 16 hours airplane mode
No phone calls on my mobile but I did dial a number several times
I have fully charged the mobile on Friday morning and on Sunday morning the battery has 70% charge.
Hint:
As it was stated in user manual it is recommended to charge the phone from mains socket whenever is possible. I can confirm that I've seen battery improvement after recharging the battery by mains socket after several times.
Since I don't have a use for MMS I have renamed the APN server. The same trick can be used to disable data and that saves battery life too if you don't use your phone to push/pull data.
In the past 2 days my network type has been set to 2G only. The automatic setting certainly have dramatic affects on battery.
Before going to bed I put the phone to airplane mode since the reception in my bedroom is very weak and this increases the battery usage.
With simple measures the battery life can be extended (noticeable) more than what you'd expect.
I'm very pleased with the battery usage so far. Nonetheless, I will buy a spare battery as soon as it is available in the UK.

Yours are the most impressive stats for the battery use. I've set my Defy into saver mode, and the network data to 2G as well (I only use it to sync up with Gmail (plus Calendar and Tasks) and my employer's Exchange email) and get down to 50% after two days of moderate use, which is enough for me not to worry about running out of juice if I'm away from home for a few days. Yes, the Defy can be pretty frugal with battery use.
I ended up having my original Defy swapped because of concerns that the battery wasn't up to scratch and the new one's been brilliant.
I'm in 3G all the time, never put it in airplane mode, and after 62 hours I still have 20% left - that's with me having used it for some calls, texts, web browsing, facebook and a good couple of hours of Angry Birds as well.
Definitely the best smartphone around for battery life IMO.

What does mains socket mean? The wall outlet (I am in the US).
If so, how else would you charge? Computer USB?
If its the bit in the wall that the electricity comes from then its the same thing :L and yeah you can charge it from a computer USB but it takes a little bit longer

If Motorola Defy's screen size was 4" and it had Froyo ROM already I would have bought two of them just out of excitement.

I'm not talking about hours of calls, more like 15 minutes or so. Maybe an hour or two total web browsing and facebook and perhaps an hour on Angry Birds.
Part of the reason it lasted so long was that I just didn't touch the phone on Christmas day at all, so that was 24 hours with basically zero use, which is unusual.
The next charge last more like 2 days, which I think is closer to how I'll be using it normally.
if you put it in air plane mode, and a couple hours later u turn air plane mode off. will u get all of your notifications? like calls,texts and stuff that people sent to u while the phone was in airplane mode
There is true gem on the Market named JuiceDeffender Beta - I used it since my Milestone and it really does what it says it does. All the hints you mentioned already included in the program and are being controlled by it. For example, as soon as you display turns off your network automatically switches to 2G. In paid version you can even adjust processor's speed when needed (underlocking of course, in terms of battery saving) However i am currently on free version and it's enough to make the battery last almost twice as longer.
I had some problems installing it on Defy, but they were all gone as soon as I rooted the phone.

How did you get the 3G -> 2G to work? I can not enable that feature, as I am not using a CyanogenMod rom and I can not download/install AOSP helper as it suggests. I am using the beta and UltimateJuice, which I purchased after seeing what features it provided. I'm using the CPU features to do what SetCPU did for me - no need to have two packages with overlapping features installed.
