None of the techniques helped rooting my Hero - Hero, G2 Touch Android Development

Hi all,
I've been around xda since I got my htc 4350, everything was jolly well. And now I'm struggling with rooting my European Hero HTC 2.73.405.66.
I tried all the ways and workarounds I could find on the internet and nothing seems to work.
SDK fastboot gets denied, flashing a recovery image using apps does not work, instant rood does not work, nothing at all, did the goldcard twice, terminal emulator. I cannot even downgrade, although in my frustration at 6 in the morning I managed to flash a generic WWE rom I found on Modaco. It was the only thing that did anything HTC Generic 2.73.405.66- it seems to be exactly the same- in the end the result is the same as if I had wiped it.
I ended up at the point where I started.
Either I have me some nasty version of protected rom, or I'm missing something.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

what phone do you have orange, tmobile etc and where are you based
Sent from my Hero using Tapatalk

The phone is generic, unbranded, purchased from Meteor in Ireland. It came Sim unlocked.

i had to make my goldcard way mroe times than 2 persistance is the key!

People often make the mistake of NOT running the hex editor as ADMINISTRATOR <==not shouting, just emphasising.

I did run it as an administrator, twice, triple checked everything, still no go.
And now, on top of everything if I follow the instructions on:
showpost.php?p=4257045&postcount=38
I get the following:
C:\A\sdk\tools>adb shell mount /system
adb server is out of date. killing...
* daemon started successfully *
Usage: mount [-r] [-w] [-o options] [-t type] device directory
C:\A\sdk\tools>adb push su /system/bin/
failed to copy 'su' to '/system/bin//su': Read-only file system

I often do not understand why people with the latest official ROM are using the goldcard method. Just use the flashrec apk as all pointed out at http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/27/how-to-root-your-htc-hero-in-one-click/
Cheers...

I have similar problems try in to root my friend Hero from T-mobile uk he get this device about month ago.
Waiting for reply

Thanks, but all versions of it did the same- gave me an error when attempting to back up and the install key was greyed out
Yes, I entered the name of the image correctly.

Did you format your sd card as prescribed? Lot of people forget that. Then it should definitely work.

*sigh* Enable usb-debugging. Fixed the whole greyed-out button problem for me. Be sure to unplug your usb cable during this progress.

Ok, I finally got it, this Rom that I managed to flash (the only one of all that were supposed to downgrade my phone) finally accepted the flashrec thing
Thank you all for your help
Sorry for the fuss

I had the same problem until I downgraded the rom. My Hero is from 3UK. Nothing seemed to work, after downgrading I could root my phone, have already tried a few Roms. I will probably go back to the 3UK stock Rom and wait for the official upgrade at the end of April. I was just curious to see how rooting is done and to get a glimpse of Android 2.1 with Live Wallpapers and Google Maps with Navigation. They are all nice features, but my phone is much slower, no matter what Rom I use. I tried wiping the phone, but it is still slow, I wasn't able to find one to match the latest Rom from 3UK.

Busybox?

Root from Paul didn't come with one, and seeing as we can't get full system access (from what i understand) im curious as to if we can actually get busybox?
The 'busybox on rooted desire' on MoDaCo didn't help at all.
I've installed bb via Titanium, yet Metamorph didn't recognise it anywhere.
Cheers in advance for help
It comes with A2SD - but you can push the busybox binary to /system while the phone is in recovery.
If you pushed bb yourself, use its absolute path (like /data/somewhere/busybox) or put its path in your $PATH to get it going. I personally, without root, put busybox in the free-to-write-to /sqlite* directory (I put * because I don't recall the full name) and it runs fine from there.
do you have a link to apps2sd & does it come with a guide as to how to install it so noobs can understand?
A2SD was taken down "temporarily".

Bare in mind I think it was taken down as (for some) it 'removed root' and also got some phones stuck in a reboot loop. Bad times.

By what I've read, though, Metamorph dies on its arse because of the lack of system rw access.

Aye, I read that, but no Mac, and I can't get to the folder where Titanium saved bb to (assuming that because it's not on the sd card in any data or the titanium folders) the phone system(?)

Install Titanium. Then get your phone into recovery using Paul's Linux ISO. In the Linux console (i.e. where you'll have typed ./step2.sh to get the recovery up), you should be able to do adb shell from there. Then follow my instructions from mount /system onwards.
I didn't follow Pauls guide as I only have access to Windows, so I used the lanarchy guide, which I think might have been taken from The Unlockr.
Maybe fill me in w/ bb according to that?
i am a bit ashamed to ask this but:
....
* boot into recovery
* adb shell from my Mac
* mount /system
....
boot into recovery -> ok
adb shell from mac.. ok? hm, i have macos as a seperate installation and i used it for rooting, so there is a pushfiles folder with recovery-mac.sh.. sudo ./recovery-mac.sh?
How do i mount /system then? Don't know where to navigate to find access to the sdcard . @volumes there are only my harddrive partitions, can't see the sdcard?
No idea, sorry, first time (ok, second time after root) i get in touch with adb, mac, sudo wtf?
Ok, all you need is some kind of environment where adb actually works.
Get your phone into recovery (the green menu screen) using whatever means or method you have.
Then, if you have Windows, you'll need the Android SDK. Ditto on a Mac. Anything with adb so that you can plug your device into your computer, do adb shell, and get a shell window up. Then
mount /system
onwards.
The key is that your phone needs to be in recovery before you do adb shell, otherwise you have no r/w access to /system.
ah! ok, perfect. The android sdk is on my windows computer, the push-files on my mac, that's the problem
thanks for your help!
the recovery is not the problem, but mount /system did nothing because there is no android sdk on my mac.. got it now i think.
mount system -> ok
copy busybok -> ok
when i try to install i get dozens of lines with "no such file or directory".
reboot -> phone not booting, hangs when displaying the HTC Logo omg
flash rom again?
same problem as watercool. Loads of "No such file or directory" messages.
But, I rebooted and it went through as normal, booted the OS fine.
hm, dont want to wipe again, pff..
flashed AhmgskMod mod again without wiping, everything ok now

ok, i did it with and without the "."

[GUIDE] Permanent root on Desire Z 'the clean way', using rage

This thread is copied and modified from the G2 thread by trigeek for the Desire Z:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834228
Apart from the changed hboot and wpthis-Z kernel module for the Desire Z instead of the G2, I have also updated the su-binary and SuperUser.apk to the latest version by ChainsDD
In no way I can be held responsible for any bricks to your phone. You are using this guide at your own risk!! I did test this guide on my own, and also on a friend's Desire Z.
As there was no manual rooting guide for the Desire Z, I posted it myself in order to help others that do not like visionary and like to do it 'the clean way'.
[GUIDE] Temp to permanent root on Desire Z, using rage instead of visionary
=================================================
There's already a guide here for obtaining permanent root using VISIONary, but some folks in #G2ROOT are having issues with the way that VISIONary modifies parititons. Using rage directly is a bit cleaner, since you know exactly what it's going to touch at each step of the way. I did NOT come up with any of this on my own, I'm building completely off of work that others have done. Speaking of which-
None of this would be possible without the tireless work that scotty2 put in. He stayed with the project for well over a month, through lots of smashed hopes and dead ends, until the solution was finally found. Were it not for his work, as well as the help of a few other key folks- we wouldn't be here. He deserves our thanks and some donations! We're talking hundreds of hours of work here, a couple bucks is not too much for that. His paypal is:
[email protected]
Send him some love! I'm not asking for anything myself, because I spent a half hour putting this together, and that doesn't deserve any donations!
DESIRE Z ROOT INSTRUCTIONS
=================================================
These are modified instructions based on the ones posted at http://bit.ly/g2root that use Visionary. A number of people have run into issues with the way that Visionary juggles around temporary partitions, and using the original root exploit is a much easier, and cleaner method for achieving permanent root. This tutorial will walk you through the rooting process by first achieving temporary root, and moving on to permanent root.
REQUIREMENTS
=================================================
•Visionary disabled at boot or uninstalled completely
•Android Terminal Emulator app
•ADB
•desirez-combined-root.zip (Attached to this post)
In the commands to run below, $ or # represent the prompt and should NOT be entered as part of the commands.
VERY IMPORTANT!
Visionary has caused filesystem corruption for some users during the rooting process. Before attempting the instructions below, make sure that you have "auto run on boot" turned OFF, and reboot your system. Since you will not need visionary anyway after this, you might as well just uninstall visionary and reboot NOW before doing anything.
TEMP ROOT
=================================================
ON YOUR PC:
Unzip the z-temp-root files to a folder. From a cmd window or terminal, navigate to that folder and execute these commands:
Code:
$ adb push su /sdcard/su
$ adb push Superuser.apk /sdcard/Superuser.apk
$ adb push rage /data/local/tmp/rage
$ adb push busybox /data/local/tmp/busybox
$ adb push root /data/local/tmp/root
$ adb shell chmod 0755 /data/local/tmp/*
ON YOUR PHONE:
1.Launch Terminal Emulator
2.
Code:
/data/local/tmp/rage
3.Wait for the message: "Forked #### childs."
4.Menu > Reset Term - Terminal Emulator will exit.
5.Launch Terminal Emulator, it Force Closes. Launch a second time, and you'll have a root shell
6.**NOTE**: in the original directions from the XDA thread, you are instructed to run the /data/local/tmp/root script here. DON'T do this just yet. Leave the terminal window open.
PERM ROOT
=================================================
ON YOUR PC:
unzip z-perm-root and navigate to that folder. There will be four files. You will need to push two of these to your phone: hboot_7230_0.84.2000_100908.nb0 and wpthis-Z.ko. The other two files are optional for checksum verification.
Code:
$ adb push hboot_7230_0.84.2000_100908.nb0 /data/local
$ adb push wpthis-Z.ko /data/local
Optional but might came in handy:
Code:
$ adb push md5checksum /sdcard/md5checksum
ON YOUR PHONE:
You should still have terminal emulator up, at a root prompt. Now run:
Optional but recommended:
Code:
# /data/local/tmp/busybox md5sum /data/local/*
You should see:
hboot_7230_0.84.2000_100908.nb0 2ce1bdd5e4c1119ccfcecb938710d742
wpthis-Z.ko c73c5e77c91d306c418983c002b60b93
In case your hboot or wpthis-Z.ko file do not have the same md5hash as shown above, DO NOT CONTINUE. This means your file is corrupt or you are using a different file, for example the one for the G2 instead of Desire Z.
Now, let's turn off security for permanent flashing:
Code:
# insmod /data/local/wpthis-Z.ko
init_module 'wpthis-Z.ko' failed (Function not implemented)
That means it worked. This next step is CRUCIAL. You must make sure that you are writing to the proper partition here or you could brick your phone. To be absolutely clear- the partition is mmcblk(zero)p(one)(eight)
# dd if=/data/local/hboot_7230_0.84.2000_100908.nb0 of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
You should see some messages indicating that it was written.
Code:
# /data/local/tmp/root
This will lock in root, and give you 'su' access in the future. Next, run:
Code:
# sync
Now wait at least a minute, just to be safe. After waiting, reboot your phone using the power button. After it finishes starting up, launch the terminal emulator, and type 'su'. You should get the prompt asking you to grant permissions. If you got the prompt, congratulations! You have permanent root!
Nice guide, thanks
Thank you Mr Q. works like a charm!
first of all.. thanks for this great guide. Everything went perfect until I came to the step to lock in root. After the command "/data/local/tmp/root" I get this error:
mkdir failed for /system/xbin, File exists
when I just ignore it and type sync after that I have no root acces after a reboot.
Does anybody have a solution for it? I have already done a hardreset with the same results.
thanks in advance...
So this only roots your phone? Or does it s-off as well? From what I understand this s-offs as well because you're pushing the hboot as well.
EDIT: Nevermind. I read the thread again and it does indeed s-off as well.

So I'm looking into these S-OFF and rooting threads and here is two bricks too. Does anyone have an answer for these two or should I skip this? Did the hboot do this or was it due to some problem in inserted kernel module? (I.E. the reboot of the emmc controller resulted in a ****ed up file system?)

Ok, so I have figured out how to get out of this "quietly brilliant" loop.
First of all, this isn't a brick and all that is needed to fix this is a quick factory reset from the bootloader.

Ok, so does any one have an explanation why this happened?
1. It wasn't wrong or screwed hboot, otherwise we would be facing a real brick?
Was it the root method? Was it the wpthis-Z.ko?
It might have been the kernel module, but I can't be sure about that with so little knowledge I have. (sure not the module itself but the kick to the emmc?) Just that it seems to be more likely option than a rooting attempt on a cached r-o file system?
I'm not complaining about the guide, it is specific and easy to follow but I would really love to have these semi bricks etc inspected more closely. It is not really helping to encourage ppl to root and try safe-off when we have unexplained bricks and semi-bricks around

I don't know about others, but I didn't on mine. I was rooting it for the first time. Also, I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I have the Bell version from Canada.
The root script threw an error for me too, so just to be safe I opened the script and typed in the commands manually. If you have problems with the script, just run these commands from the root terminal on your phone:
Code:
/data/local/tmp/busybox killall rage
mount -o rw,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk0p25 /system
mkdir /system/xbin
/data/local/tmp/busybox cp /data/local/tmp/busybox /system/xbin/busybox
chmod 4755 /system/xbin/busybox
/system/xbin/busybox --install -s /system/bin
cp /sdcard/Superuser.apk /system/app/Superuser.apk
cp /sdcard/su /system/bin/su
chmod 4755 /system/bin/su
mount -o ro,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk0p25 /system
sync
"mkdir /system/xbin" just creates a directory, if it already exists you can ignore this command and proceed.
Hope this helps someone.. Thanks to the OP for the scripts.
Have a quick look, /system/xbin already seems to exist on my phone too.
So is there an error in the script ? e.g. needs to ignore if the directory already exists ? Or am I (we ?) missing something ?

Good info, thanks. Perhaps just comment out that line of the script, to save running it all by hand (and therefore be prone to more error ?) ?

I did that first.. it threw more errors with the mount commands because I'd already run the script once, so some of the commands were repated. If it's your first run through, commenting it out would be fine.
I only did it line by line so I could see any more errors for myself and decide if they were important. As it turns out the script is very simple and only involves moving files around and changing their permissions.. anything that goes wrong should be immediately apparent even if you have no experience with shell commands.

Yay, I just perma-rooted my phone using this method, many thanks to those who came up with the method in the first place, plus this handy guide too.
I got the message about /system/xbin already existing, but you can just ignore that message, it runs the rest of the script anyway.

Trouble rooting at last step.

Hey, I just got my G2 today and am trying to root it through adb. I get to the last part of the tutorial under getting perm-root, and i put in /data/local/tmp/root in the root terminal, and it gives me a whole bunch of busybox: /system/bin/"": Input/output error's, and at the end says cp: cant creat /system/bin/su Input output error and unable to chmod /system/bin/su no such file or directory.
what method are you using to root?
Hey Andy, I'm having the same problem the original poster is. I'm using the rage/gfree method and everything works like a charm right up to the last step. I'm getting the "unable to chmod /system/bin/su: no such file or directory"
This was also reported here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897499&highlight=chmod+0755+/data/local/tmp/*
(Though, unlike the guy in that thread, I didn't try to use visionary AT ALL (didn't download it or install it or anything) and ONLY followed the wiki's guide, which uses the rage/gfree method.)
All three of us seem to have ended up with the problem though and from reading through that thread I posted the link to above and from what I've done 8 times now tonight, we've followed the steps exactly.
Any ideas? I would love to get this thing perma rooted.
Thanks so much to you and anyone else for any help.
Are you sure there weren't any errors before that one? I would have guessed you had an error in the cp command as well...
Make sure you have the su file on the root of your SD card. It was the first file you pushed in the wiki guide. If that file is not there, just push it to your SD card again and then re-run the root script in terminal.
Finally got it worked out late last night. Turns out that I had put a copy of the su file on the card while it was mounted to my computer, before I mounted it on the phone, prior to following the root steps. I guess this somehow messed with adb pushing it correctly.
So if that is happening to you, clear out the unnecessary files first and only move the necessary files to the card via adb.
After that, it worked like a charm. I am now perma-rooted.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
And thanks so much ian. What you said got me thinking about removing the su file altogether and starting it fresh.

I dont know why it was giving me errors, but all i had to to was flash recovery through adb and flash a rooted rom and everything worked great.

Gordita Root: Optimus V exploit March 24th 2012

This is an exploit, I take NO RESPONSIBILITY if this does ANYTHING bad, your fault not mine, it was only tested on the firmware mentioned below. If you redistribute it, republish, work it into a all in one click, please link back and PROPERLY credit me.
Tested on the
ro.build.date=Mon Jan 30 10:42:53 KST 2012
ro.build.version.incremental=ZV9.479A6632
Update for the VirginMobile LG Optimus V
Your phone needs to be updated to the above build, and potentially needs a factory reset before this works, but it works fine. This will allow you to flash recovery without being root. After flashing recovery, flash this zip http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8699733/rootme.zip to install su, superuser and disable re-flashing of the stock re covery

Confirmed working on a phone donated just for this purpose!
Started with stock firmware, Android 2.2.1, baseband VM670ZV4_60401001, generic android recovery
Flashed the VirginMobile Security Update from their website, became VM670ZV9_60401001 ZV9.479A6632
Manually walked through above script by jcase via gtalk, and using the exploit, was able to flash BobZhome's CWM for the VM670, reboot into it and made a backup.
Flashed the su zip, and all is well in Optimus V land again.
HUGE THANKS TO JCASE FOR TAKING THE TIME TO RE-ROOT THE VM670!!!
I only wish I understood what it all meant--so I could be excited, too!

Hey! Sorry, I'm a ET4G user, just trying to put ICS on my girl's phone so she stops whining
Anyways, I presume there's an update being pushed to all optimus v's? If so would you happen to know how I could update hers? Or would it be easier to stay on the current version ( i belive v5???) and root a different way??
Also, great work on an exploit so soon after a release! Happy to join (kinda) the Optimus family!

The update is not being pushed, because the OTA mechanism doesn't work on the OV. You have to go to the VM website and download the update from the phone FAQ.
The only advantage is a new radio, which give slightly improved performance.
Thank you very much!
I installed the update to my (unmodded) backup phone without thinking about whether or not I'd be able to root the handset after applying it. DOH!
I have just been using this phone as a WiFi device so far. I have run the battery down and recharged it once and installed a few apps on it. So I will run it down, recharge it again and then do a factory reset before I try rooting it just to make sure that I don't hose it.
It's a good idea to check all the steps before you start ...
Finally ran my battery down for the second time. So, I recharged, ran a factory re-set and ran the shell script on my Linux box to root the phone.
Oops!
The file VM670NH_recovery.img downloaded as VM670NH_recovery.bin and the system can't find/stat it! Hit ^C and bailed!
Hoping, hoping, hoping ...
Good! It's not bricked!
Renamed the recovery file, re-ran the script. Success!!
Rebooted into recovery, flashed rootme.zip
==> Did a nandroid backup.
Downloaded root check basic app and confirmed that it has worked.
So, for other modders trying this out:
Check your files and file names before you start! When I looked at Gordita.sh the first time I found that what I had downloaded was an HTML file with the script embedded in it. Copied and pasted from the OP and then checked again to make sure I had the right content.
Of course if you are running the adb commands manually then this won't happen to you.
But, as I noted above, I didn't cross-check that the recovery file that the script would be looking for had the right file name extension (.img, not .bin), so don't be me.
That said, jcase: Thank You Very Much!! Not only for developing this root exploit but also for making one that is robust enough for someone like me to goober it up and still come out unburnt!
After all of this , can you make it a hotspot in quick settings?
The setting dialog is there ..

Once I rooted my phone I installed a modified ROM. And then another one, and then ...
I saw your question a bit ago and since I no longer had the stock ROM installed (and had never used Quick Settings to enable the hotspot feature before) I didn't know. I still don't. Here is the story on that ...
I just restored the ZV9 ROM from backup today and then installed the Quick Settings app. I can say that the app still has the option to enable the hotspot available and that it tries to set it up. However the phone I am using hasn't been activated yet and the 3G network isn't provisioned on it. So all I get is a message saying the network isn't available.
So, it looks somewhat promising. Maybe someone who has an activated phone with the ZV9 ROM can test it out and let you know.
And if I activate this phone before you get a useful reply I'll test it to see if it works.
So happy to see this
Please assist
Got up to step adb shell "chmod 755 /data/local/flash_image"
But got back "no such file."

Got up to CWM but it won't let me select install zip from sd card. Any suggestions?
