Hi all,
I've been around xda since I got my htc 4350, everything was jolly well. And now I'm struggling with rooting my European Hero HTC 2.73.405.66.
I tried all the ways and workarounds I could find on the internet and nothing seems to work.
SDK fastboot gets denied, flashing a recovery image using apps does not work, instant rood does not work, nothing at all, did the goldcard twice, terminal emulator. I cannot even downgrade, although in my frustration at 6 in the morning I managed to flash a generic WWE rom I found on Modaco. It was the only thing that did anything HTC Generic 2.73.405.66- it seems to be exactly the same- in the end the result is the same as if I had wiped it.
I ended up at the point where I started.
Either I have me some nasty version of protected rom, or I'm missing something.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The phone is generic, unbranded, purchased from Meteor in Ireland. It came Sim unlocked.
i had to make my goldcard way mroe times than 2 persistance is the key!
People often make the mistake of NOT running the hex editor as ADMINISTRATOR <==not shouting, just emphasising.
I did run it as an administrator, twice, triple checked everything, still no go.
And now, on top of everything if I follow the instructions on:
showpost.php?p=4257045&postcount=38
I get the following:

Thanks, but all versions of it did the same- gave me an error when attempting to back up and the install key was greyed out
Yes, I entered the name of the image correctly.
Did you format your sd card as prescribed? Lot of people forget that. Then it should definitely work.

*sigh* Enable usb-debugging. Fixed the whole greyed-out button problem for me. Be sure to unplug your usb cable during this progress.
Ok, I finally got it, this Rom that I managed to flash (the only one of all that were supposed to downgrade my phone) finally accepted the flashrec thing

I had the same problem until I downgraded the rom. My Hero is from 3UK. Nothing seemed to work, after downgrading I could root my phone, have already tried a few Roms. I will probably go back to the 3UK stock Rom and wait for the official upgrade at the end of April. I was just curious to see how rooting is done and to get a glimpse of Android 2.1 with Live Wallpapers and Google Maps with Navigation. They are all nice features, but my phone is much slower, no matter what Rom I use. I tried wiping the phone, but it is still slow, I wasn't able to find one to match the latest Rom from 3UK.
Ok, to save some people some time here for rooting and opening it up to non-market apps on your bravo, and probably any motorola AT&T device.
1. Z4Root is the easiest way to root since you just get it from the market. One buttons press then done.
2. to modify the settings.db in /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/ use the SuperOneClick which you can get here

3. I used root explorer, which you can get from the market and just edited the /system/etc/motorola/com.android.providers.settings/secure.mkitso
and /system/etc/motorola/com.motorola.android.providers.settings/settings.mkitso files in place. Copying them, editing them, and chmodding them didn't seem to work for me for whatever reason. The way I did it, you don't have to do anything other than edit the file in text editor and factory reset your phone.
Rooted mine the other day using the Droid 2 root method at modmymobile.
I can't post links yet, so here's the instructions:

- cp /sdcard/Superuser.apk /system/app/Superuser.apk
- cp /sdcard/su /system/bin/su
- cp /sdcard/busybox /system/bin/busybox
- chmod 4755 /system/bin/su
- chmod 4755 /system/bin/busybox
- mount -o ro,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
- exit
Once you have achieved root, to update the Superuser.apk to the latest version, run these commands:
- adb shell
- su
- mount -o rw,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
- rm /system/app/Superuser.apk
- pm uninstall com.noshufou.android.su
Then search on the market for Superuser and download the one by ChainsDD. Confirmed working on latest Droid2 2.2 OTA & the new leaked 2.3.15 OTA.

On the Bravo its not "PC Mode", I think its "Portal and Tools" Other then that, everything worked flawlessly.

I just bought this phone for my younger brother and I'm impressed. I have a Droid Incredible and its just as smooth. I also verified that the Z4root app from the marketplace roots the phone.
Did anyone get it unlocked yet
Yeah, it's a great phone. I'm trying to get the settings.db thing to work so we can install non-market apps, but it doesn't seem to be working. I got the db modded and put back in place, but I still don't see the option in the application manager screen.
IMO this is the #2 android phone on AT&T next to the captivate. that SAMOLED is great and the GPU on the captivate is top notch.
Anyway, if anyone can assist on the non-market app thing that would be great.
So far, I have rooted with Z4Root, removed the AT&T crapware, installed the MarketAccess to get around the stupid AT&T market filters. Last thing is to get the non-market apps going. After that it's a matter of waiting for this device to gain popularity and some custom ROMs.
I managed to get my Bravo to install non-market apps using:
1. SuperOneClickv1.5.5-ShortFuse
2. Click Here
I am not sure if just step 2 alone would be OK though.
Remember, you have to factory reset after you have finished with step 2.

If you mean "unlock" as in able to use the phone on a different carrier no one has posted how to do it yet. The OP meant allowing non-market apps.

Downloaded z4root onto my phone because it's not available on Market,
but it won't let me run the z4root.apk because it's not a market app.

Nevermind, got z4 to install using Android Central's Sideload Wonder Machine, then rooted my phone no problem, installed TiTanium backup, and rid of the bloatware.
Phone processes quicker, from settings, fetching list of running apps, data manager, manager etc, list loads much quicker now.
How did you go about getting rid of the garbage-ware? curious.
Hi I'm posting here in hopes to get a response because I cannot seem to get a response on the S1C forum. I rooted with z4root but cannot get non market apps enabled using S1C. I have .net framework 4.0 using vista and the motorola drivers from their site. I get as far as "getting mount path" and then it fails. Am I missing something or should this be working for me. And if so, what could be the problem? Many thanks.
SideloadWonderMachine worked for me, give it a shot. 2 clicks to add an app. Pretty foolproof (I am a fool).
Rooted my Bravo using adb install z4root (linux PC) then ran z4root from phone, worked great.
just rooted Bravo using Droid2Root files and manual ADB commands, from the thread that Gumpo10k shared in this thread, up above. Worked great, now I need a good 2.2 ROM to get tethering working.
I have managed to get CIFS working on stock Nexus 10.
It's quite a bit more problematic on the Nexus 10 than normal.
There are 2 main issues to deal with. Newer versions of the Linux kernel require a UNC variable to be passed to them and the current version of busybox doesn't do this. There is a patch out. I have extracted the patched busybox binary from craigacomez's AOSP Nexus 10 rom.
(Check it out here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1998585 ). Otherwise it should work on the stock mount command if you specify the unc= mount option with the share.
The other issue is the multiuser stuff. If you execute the mount command from inside Terminal Emulator (or a script program) it looks like it mounts ok and you can 'ls' in the directory but it doesn't work for Android apps, they just see an empty directory but if you do it via a 'adb shell' it works fine in Android apps. My theory is ADB is outside of the multiuser stuff. adb actually ships on the device.
1) Unlock bootloader (fastboot oem unlock)
2) Flash recovery adb flash recovery whatever.img
3) Root device (flash CWM-SuperSU-0.98.zip)
4) Install BusyBox (from the market)
5) Copy md4.ko and cifs.ko to device. The files can go anywhere you like. In this example I will just use the root of the sdcard. Some people like them in /system/modules or /system/lib/modules
6) busybox mount -o rw,remount /
7) adb shell
8) Override /system/bin/busybox with the patched version (maybe move it first so it's backed up).
9) insmod /sdcard/md4.ko
10) insmod /sdcard/cifs.ko
11) busybox mount -t cifs -o username=MYUSER,password=MYPASS,unc=\\\\192.168.1.1\\storage //192.168.1.1/storage /data/media/0/cifs/Storage
You will need to manually preform the last 3 commands each time you reboot the device from a adb shell.
NOTE: You can probably get rid of the -o flags completely. In theory the patched version of busybox makes the UNC bit redundant. Possibly you can use the stock busybox with the UNC flag and avoid using the patched one totally. I have just included it to be sure.
Make sure you type 'busybox mount' not 'mount', by default they are different binaries. Otherwise you can remove the /system/bin/mount command and make a new one linking /system/bin/mount to /system/bin/busybox.
Possibly there is some way to get the mount working in the multiuser environment without requiring busybox. If you figure it out please tell ☺

9) Add a 'SMShortcuts' widget to your home screen
10) "Add one script shortcut"
11) Choose your script
12) Optionally use this pretty icon ☺
13) Give it a nice name like "Mount Shares"

EDIT4: Some users have reported that the need to modify the script to get it working with their version of SU.
EDIT5: I have uploaded modules for 4.2.2, kernel 3.4.5-gaf9c307 but I haven't actually tested them myself (still on 4.2.1). Apparently the adb loophole has also been patched but it is possible to reenable it by putting a RSA key onto the device. Check out this set of instructions here.
EDIT6: I have updated to 4.2.2 on my Nexus 10 and can confirm the new modules work.
You must setup the adbkey or you will get a "device: offline" message. By default adb when adb first runs it tries to create the keys in the $HOME dir which is /data/.android, but the data directory isn't accessible by the 'shell' user.
I got it working simply by setting the HOME variable to /sdcard and restarting the adb server in the script then Android popped up a query (I have update the script above).
IMPORTANT: The Android Media scanner recursively scans folders for media to add the the database so it shows up in programs like Google Music. On large shares this can be a long process and use heaps of battery life. To prevent this add a blank file with the name ".nomedia" to the root of your mount points (or each individual share if you aren't used 1 folder for all your mounts). This will stop music showing up in programs though.
If you find that the device stops responding (the launcher might work but apps fail to load) or you get reboots (often after the previous bug) this is probably due to a bad wifi connection.

I have tried using the busybox mount but that didn't work, do I need the modified mount or will none of this help anyway?

How is this different to what I'm doing already? Mounting this way doesn't work, only the process that mounted it can see the files.
Although I don't have nexus 10, I am having the similar mounting issue on my nexus 7 until I saw this post.
Advise about "adb shell" really helps me resolve the multiuser issue.

Isn't it fastboot that unlocks the bootloader, and not adb? (unless adb can do it too; I've only heard of fastboot though)

Not a high priority right now as currently you need to do the manual adb shell stuff by hand to get things mounted, a little extra setup work isn't a huge difference.

Are you mounting in a 'adb shell' or locally in something like terminal emulator? My OTG cable won't be here for a while so I can't really test myself.

Currently I'm thinking of ways to hack around the 'adb shell' requirement, as a basic hackish fix would be to make a program that turns on adb wireless, connects to the local device and issues a command. Of course possibly there is a 'proper' way to do mounting. Another lazy way for those with their shares on a Linux system would be a script issue commands to the server via a ssh, getting it to log back into the phone and mount stuff over adb wireless.

I've been working on getting OTG support natively in my AOSP based custom ROM and I have had some success... check out my ROM for details

Just wanted to thank H3g3m0n as I was able to successfully mount over adb. Also came up with a workaround to bypass connecting to a PC, grabbed the arm fastboot binary from this thread and installed it on my nexus 7. Used it to connect wireless adb on the 10 and ran the mount commands on the 7.

Basically you can setup a shared folder from a remote computer. It allows you to have files on another system accessible as if it was part of the internal storage in the device.
Just found out that Android ships with the adb binary on the device itself (after crosscompiling it myself :/, oh well the experience was useful).
It should be possible to setup a script to start the adb server, connect to the localhost and execute the mount without too much difficulty.
Ok, added a script and instructions to the front page for simple on tablet mounting.
hey this took me a few hours, i know a bit about androids and it gave me a hard time... thought i would share:
digix sophix 8" tablet root 840g
1: make sure you install your adb drivers, and your tablet is connected to your pc with usb debug mode on, and install unknown sources on.
2. goto your platform-tools adb dir and copy the attached zip files to that dir..
3. run command prompt navigate to your adb platform-tools dir
4. you could create a script, but i had to do it by hand, run these commands from your dos prompt:

adb push su /system/xbin/su

i hope that works, cause thats all i should have had to do, and i ended up doing a ton of other things that i didnt need to... i had to re-install google apps, and market cause when i tried to root it i accidentially deleted em somehow....
but that should work.. if not.. you can understand the method of the script, and something can be worked by this im pretty sure!

I just got mine, and yeah it has frozen up a couple of times. Not all the time, but still annoying. I might return it if it keeps happening.

I've made a batch script that should help you. It automatically pushes Superuser and the SU binary to their proper places, fixes permissions, and reboots the device over ADB.
I haven't tested it on my father's 840G yet, so use it at your own risk, but theoretically everything should work.

Hey thank you so much.
However, i'm still confused/cautious.
So I got my ADB drivers from adbdriver but when I start the batch it says: Daemon not running, and then Daemon sucessfully started and then nothing. I left it for 15 minutes but nothing happened...what'd I do wrong?

It didn't recognize the device. How exactly did you install the drivers? It would have proceeded if they were correctly installed.
Go into ADB and type:

If nothing comes up the tablet's not on, not plugged in, or the drivers are incorrectly installed.
Worst case scenario, download TeamViewer and I'll try to help you remotely.

I've linked another version of the batch in my first post in this thread. It's got a command that I believe is causing the issue commented out, as well as a bit more troubleshooting.
Also, there's a thread now that has a 15 second ADB driver installer. If the batch still doesn't work, download it here.

I would Skype you, but my mic's messed up right now. Once you grab TeamViewer, PM me the computer ID and password and I'll connect to find out what's wrong. Hopefully by then I figure out what's wrong with my mic.

PC: Windows 7, pro. USB 2.0 port. ADB Driver "Drivers-AllwinnerA10-32bits\32Bit_Win_7_Vista_XP" from 2011. ADB Platform-Tool, Android Debug Bridge version 1.0.31. Logged in as normal User, not Admin. The development kit is not installed, I just downloaded the Platform-Tool, unzipped it and started "adb" - I just want to make a f***ing backup :crying:

Problem:
I do not get a connection from the PC to the tablet. Also no RSA Key question comes up at the tablet. The adb tool just throws an error :"device not found". I tried several things, log in as Admin, "adb wait-for-device", plugging and unplugging ... nothing helped. The adb tool works fine, I tested it with a Samsung Galaxy S2. I'm not quite sure about the adb USB driver on windows, but there is no exclamation mark nor other problems reported. So this should be fine.
Anyone any hint, tip or solution? Would be great - gathering for hours with this problem - searching forum 'n stuff....

Try with uberizer or MTKDroid tools. Just connect and select adb terminal.

I think since in Android 4.2.2 the RSA Key authentication was introduced, something is wrong with the connection. Because I would expect the RSA Key question on the tablet, but the tablet does not show this dialog.
By the way, I recognized that the USB driver for the ADB interface is titled "Drivers-AllwinnerA10" but the tablet has a A13 core. But I do not find another driver at the moment and the vendor ID -VID_10D6&PID_0C02&REV_0202&MI_01- fits (otherwise, windows wouldn't install it anyway). Does it make sense to search for another driver?
hi from messing with various drivers and android devices i have found that installing PDA net for windows (theirs and android version too but not needed) once pdanet installs let the drivers for your phone be installed, if by any chance you have drivers already installed what you can do is go to device manager, click on your device uninstall the drivers, unplug your phone and then open pdaNET a window will come up waiting for you to connect your phone and the driver installation process will begin.
The program downloads the correct driver for mostly any model phone you have and works flawlessly with ADB, if by any chance this helped just give me a thanks !

Thanks for the tip. It really installed an USB driver as you said (I've deinstalled the other driver before). But sadly the result is the same. I can't access the ADB interface - same error "Device not found".
At this point I want to say thanks to all viewers of this thread, it seems really to be not an easy task. I'm still open minded in any direction and would be happy for any suggestion what I might try.
Even a hint, how I could reduce the possibilities for the root of my problem. I'm still not quite sure, if the driver is the problem or even if the tablet itself has some kind of software defect on this kernel version - By the way, does anyone have the same kernel version (posted at the beginning - 3.4.0+ [email protected] --- repeated for your convenience) of Jelly Bean (4.2.2)? Do you have experience with the ADB interface then?

I have nearly an identical tablet except mine has the PnP code of Vendor 10D6/Device 0C01 and it shows as P706 on the USB description.
I installed PDAnet, that actually was able to upload the Android version of PDAnet to the tablet, so I think that's a definite for the driver working. But I'm also having trouble getting ADB to list the device and I'm using the latest ADB from the SDK. Since ADB tries to setup a network server, I'm wondering if the ADB driver on windows has to be tethered as a NIC somehow?, just a theory.
I'm using a fresh install of XP and can do a complete rollback, so I'm certain it's not the OS.
There's also another quirk about this tablet. I wanted to do a backup of the firmware from this device. Techknow's utilities use ADB to issue several shell commands to copy "partitions" to the SD card, I thought I might as well try to do that manually only to find what would've been copied as /dev/block/nanda, nandb, etc. is named /dev/block/acta, actb, etc. instead. But lack of "root" means I can't read any of those partitions or even copy su into /sbin.
Uberizer isn't any good since as far as I can see that also uses ADB. Any known issues with versions of ADB? or even any other tools which do similar to ADB?, or even a way to "root" these devices just by Terminal and SD?

Ah, okey, soz I got the USB thing a bit mixed up. My tablet does have the same code, I assume the 0C01 is when it's in recovery mode (power on with volume + pressed)
I also realised the driver that was working wasn't one from PDAnet.
I've updated the working 32-bit driver with the version of ADB I'm using and included it in the attachment. Maybe you can try that and see if you have any progress.

Copy .android from the attachment into your %USERPROFILE% directory (i.e. C:\Document and Settings\<user> on XP or C:\Users\<user> on Windows 7)
You can check what the user directory is by DIR %USERPROFILE% in the "DOS" command line (%USERPROFILE% is case sensitive).
ADB should list your device when you do adb devices in the "DOS" command line.
Basically, adb_usb.ini with a custom identifier was missing.

Right, I've made up a pack to automate putting SU on the device and setting up permissions on SU and BUSYBOX.
!!! This is only for the VID_10D6&PID_0C02 device, your mileage may very with other devices. !!!
DRIVER directory should contain the USB driver you need, otherwise try installing PDAnet and tell it to replace the driver.
Install USB driver, run SUME.BAT
to hopefully backup all the needed stock firmware to SD;
adb shell
su
cat /dev/block/acta > /mnt/sd-ext/acta.img
cat /dev/block/actb > /mnt/sd-ext/misc.img
cat /dev/block/actc > /mnt/sd-ext/system.img
exit
exit
adb kill-server

Yes, that was it! I copied the adb_usb.ini file into the .android user directory (which only contains these ascii chars "0x10D6" - no CR no LF or anything else) and it worked out !!!

There was no RSA-Key question at all on the tablet!!!
as I did the full backup with "adb backup -apk -shared -all" I was asked on the tablet to confirm this
So obviously something strange is going on here. Since it is claimed everywhere the with Android 4.2.2 the ADB interface should be generally RSA-Key protected. Okay, might be that I misunderstood something here :silly:
At least this problem is solved and I appreciated every comment in this thread. One question would be final to answer:
Who should have brought the adb_usb.ini to my PC. The ADB driver ? The ADB Platform-Tool package? So, whom to blame here - NO - just kidding :laugh:
I did briefly try the platform-tools (since I didn't mind the OS being trashed), they didn't add any adb_usb.ini and there isn't any real indication the file was needed/didn't exist, they could've simply put a note on the ADB utility when it didn't find any devices.
I'm not sure what ADB backup does. As far as I know the mounted partition images are differently named to various backup tutorials, so I get the feeling ADB backup just simply copies the user data and not much else. I recommend doing the backup I mentioned as well, it'll at least capture a copy of the boot partition, which if the device doesn't have that you'll probably need to revert to using live suite or some other firmware utility to restore it. Getting the firmware for that is another story, read a fair amount of posts here and other places on the net that don't sound fun.
I personally still can't get superuser to behave for using su on the terminal/term.apk (I want to remove useless "system" apps and make sure the device isn't talking back to anyone, i.e. google), but I'll keep tinkering.
My main aim for getting one of these tablets was to boot other firmware from the SD slot, but it looks as if the u-boot process is locked to internal NAND. So might have to modify it by adding "fatload mmc" to the script.

Right the permissions thing turned out to be an issue with Superuser, dunno why. So replace the su binary from SuperSU (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053) into my SUME pack and install the Superuser.apk by;
adb root
adb shell mount -o rw,remount /system
adb push Superuser.apk /system/app
as for stripping back the Applications, I've got it down to this as bare bones
adb pull /system/app backup\system\app
to backup system applications before you do anything
I found if you do delete any applications and then android gets stuck at the logo, just adb push them back and it'll boot without reboot when you've got the chain right.

A few odds and sods missing will make settings close, but it's trivial stuff. Personally don't like the sound of Fused Location, but it won't boot without it and I haven't seen any dodgey traffic from it (yet).
I recommend installing Droidwall with adb push /system/app, before installing games.
And modifying /etc/hosts with 127.0.0.1 to certain you know whos and advertisers.
Some of my personal choice replacement applications (so far);
Total Commander over ES file explorer.
Opera Classic over the inbuilt browser (although I'm still trying to remove the default search engine).

Discovered some new things;
BACKUP FILES WITH "ADB PULL" BEFORE MODIFYING ANY FILES!!!
I think performancepolicy.apk needs to be added to the bare bones application list, afaics from looking inside the package it sets system performance stuff, so likely throttling to preserve battery power.
bin_cfg.xml in /misc which can be modified by
adb shell mount -o rw,remount /misc
then adb pull, edit and push the file back
the line in there for "backlight_brightness" 780;1020;780 can be changed to 240;1020;240 which dims the backlight substantially saving battery power. not sure if 240 is the absolute minimum, but 120 seems to be too low afaics. interestingly information on the settings is in the files named _userview.xml
build.prop in /system which can be modified by
adb shell mount -o rw,remount /system
then adb pull, edit and push the file back
and then chmod 644 /system/build.prop
the lines in there for ro.wifi.signal.level.# can all be set to 0, this theoretically cuts the wifi power usage to less than 1mW, again saving battery. if android doesn't boot fully on reboot it's because chmod hasn't been set, you should be able to adb back in and correct.
please be careful modifying either file as both seem to have safety limits imposed on certain device components (i.e. battery temprature), messing with those can make the tablet stop working.
