Desire suddenly turned off? - Desire General

I've had mine for three days on Voda, UK. Everything has been fine - great, actually - except that this afternoon when I took the phone out of my pocket, it was completely off. I tried hitting the power button, but nothing - no matter how long I held it. I could only get it on again by removing the battery and reinserting it.
I am desperately hoping it is just a one-off, but am obviously worried in case it happens again and I am thus unreachable. Any ideas?
Thanks, in advance.

If it does happen again it might be worth you considering a factory reset to see if any installed software is causing the shutdown.
If it doesnt happen again - problem solved.
There is only one thing you can do really..... wait and see

I still have a few days of 'instant return' warranty left and - as is usual with these things - I expect it to go wrong when my 'no questions asked return' period is up, so I have to wait for ages to get a refurbished replacement.
Hopefully it isn't a hardware issue...

Instant return??? Im sorry, but what does that mean...
Im from Sweden and ive never heard of that here... Is it something u have to pay for or is it like "open buy"??
Just courious....

I had a similar problem today; out of nowhere, the phone just decided it wasn't going to wake up from sleep no matter what. The only way to get it back was to take out the battery, but it made the phone pretty much unusable. The problem turned out to be my SD Card. Took it out and the phone worked again, but the the SD card is toast.

desire... dead :(

My 10 days old desire has already stopped working, today.. so sad!
I didnt do any flashing whatsoever.
It started with a Sense application crash, and after a few reboots things have kept going worse. First it acted like the vol down button was stuck, then after a reboot the menu button and the trackball stopped working.
I dediced to try an hard reset, but before i could do it just started hanging at the white/htc bootscreen (before 'quiely brilliant'). Now it doesnt go past it.
Vol- + Poweron doesnt work.
Back + Poweron enters the bootloader but i don't think i can do anything there.
Right now i'm abroad for work and im just luckyi brought my old Diamond..
I'm pretty sure it has to go back to HTC, but any idea would be appreciated
Why even bother messing - it's clearly not right so get yourself a shiny new one and experience new phone smell all over again!
And if you're from the UK, take it back to where you got it and MAKE them replace it. It's NOT down to HTC to replace it.
No, i'm from Italy, but i'll be in Turkey for at least one more week, so i don't think they're going to replace it. It will probably have to be sent out for warranty
I know what it is, hardware problem.. Your desire's power adapter/supplier is dead.
it can be changed. It happens due to overheating so I guess you charge it too much

how dare you to charge your battery that fiercely!
As already said, don't mess around with it - have it replaced under warranty. It has nothing to do with the power adapter - you probably have a faulty mainboard and they will replace it. It's a well known hardware fault.
Sorry to hear your phone is playing up could you not phone the shop from Turkey ?? and tell them the problem and could they change it when you get back, I'm not sure what the call would cost but at least you gave it a shot.

[Q] Phone powers down and won't turn back on w/o pulling the battery

Anyone else having this problem?
The phone won't turn back on from what I think is locked because the screen is black, but none of the buttons do anything, I have to re-insert the battery and the phone will boot up with the power button. This happens almost every day.
Sounds like a problem with the digitiser/screen, and a candidate for a warranty return ?
Have you tried to switch it off (the screen with short press, not the power) and then on again with the power button? Sometimes it happens on my z too but its just a sw bug. Switch off and on helps here.
-- sent from htc z using xda app
I am able to lock and unlock with the power button normally.

Could be a problem with the contacts on the battery -- perhaps the contact is loose, so when you bump the phone just right it loses power and shuts down.
I had this once last week. I left it sitting on the workbench in the garage for about an hour while I was out there and it became unresponsive to all buttons/keypresses.
A battery pull and it fired right up again.
It was -10C in the garage and the bench is metal. I chalked it up to getting too cold.
It hasn't done it again since I keep it in my back pocket (front pocket has claimed a few digitizers/LCDs in the past!).

This is definitely not an individual case as I saw so many DesireZ or G2 users in HK or China raised the same issues on the gfan forum (one of the China HTC forum).
My DesireZ is a genuine one with stock ROM. It happened 2-3 times already of what we called the "sleep dead" in China here.
I locked the phone then after a while when I tried to turn it on, all buttons became dead. Finally I have to pull out and insert the battery again to make the phone alive.
Some of the gfan forum members also encountered the same situation. Some of their phone are Euro version and some Asia Pac version but the cases are the same that means this problem are not only for a specific version. Some say it is becoz of temperature but I really don't think so. I am sure this is a bug......
Bring back to HTC is not a solution as this "sleep dead" phenomenon don't appear every minute. Mine has happened 3 times and I bought this DZ only about 2 weeks.
happened 2-3 times to me too, each time it was sitting in my pocket.
it's summer in Australia so i doubt its anything to do with being too cold.
hasn't happened for about a week now, so i kind of ignored the problem.
That is definitely not good news.
Mind is still stock from Bell, unlocked for use on Rogers.
I guess I may have to find a replacement phone soon.

I encountered the same problem, so do my friends. Google maps causes the problem in 3 different phones.
Sent from my Desire Z
Anyone found a solution to this? Is it a s/w bug or a hardware issue? Thanks.
As far as I can tell, it's a hardware issue. Happened to me four times randomly before I took it in and exchanged at Bell. My new phone and the phone my friend got (at the same time as my first), has zero issues.
At the time, it didn't matter if it was cold, warm, fully charged, plugged-in, etc. It would do it randomly once every 1-4 days. It didn't even matter after I did factory reset (so software would not be an issue).
I have no idea what causes it but if you're getting the sleep-dead issue, I'd really recommend exchanging it if you can. Better to be safe than wait and find it's not an issue you can fix yourself.
I have a Bell stock Desire Z that has done this twice. First time it happened was when I tried wake it up in the morning after sleeping all night. The second time it was at a Christmas party. Just finished taking a picture. Went to take another shot, bang it was dead. Both times, pulled the battery and it came back to life.
Bought mine from Bell as well less than 2 weeks ago. Do they give any trouble to exchange it? Do they actually need me to factory reset it before returning/exchanging it?

I didn't have any troubles. I did a wipe and factory reset, then wipe again for security though. As long as you're only doing EXCHANGE (not refund), you have 30 days.
I must report that this issue happened on mine as well.
In JuicePlotter, the period where the unresponsiveness happened, juice plotter recorded no power.
(Either that or juice plotter only refreshes the graph when you open the app).
Happened twice within the first 48 hours of getting this phone. In day 3 now.
I have the same problem. It happend to me twice (in two weeks).
I would like to know if this is a software issue.
I still have the stock unmodified rom but am planning to install custom roms.
If this appears to be a hardware error, I should return my phone and get a new one. If it's a software thing, there will be a fix eventually, or I can just install a custom rom and be done with it...
anyone any idea?
Is there anyone with a custom rom who has the same problem?
Like I've said, I doubt it's a software issue (especially when it happens AFTER factory reset). But again, why take the chance? Better to be safe than sorry than be out $600.
happend to me today for the first time too... fully loaded, not pretty cold and stock rom on european version. it seems to simply being switched off. kind of sucks, as i'm having hardcase around which needs to removed everytime first.
mine too
it happened to me too. just after i started using maps and locations. i have it for a month now and this issue just started to surface the past 3 days...ohwell..hope we get a fix soon..or at least a "how to stop this issue" sometime real soon....:|

[Q] HTC Desire won't boot or charge

Hi! My first post here and, sadly, not a pleasant one for me.
Today I, while charging my rooted Desire (Ginger Villain 2.8, if that matters), launched an app and it crashed (black screen but with status bar still showing). Since none of the buttons were responding, I took out the battery and then put it back in and tried to boot it. I went as far as the GingerVillain logo screen but then stopped the process. Since I was impatient (and dumb...), I pulled the battery out again. On the next boot process it halted at the white HTC screen. But now on the 3rd try it refuses to boot at all. No response what so ever when I press the Power button. Charge LED doesn't light up if I connect the USB cable.
What could I have messed up? Any solutions? I sure hope I haven't bricked it or something... Any help is appreciated!
Can you access hboot or fastboot? If yes, use the last one flash ruu. If not, use the search. There is a thread with nearly the same problem like yours and when I remember correctly, it got solved.
Power + Volume down doesn't work.
The other thread that seemed to be about this problem also involved some physical damage. My phone hasn't been dropped or soaked though.
I will try to get a hold of a charged battery and see what happens. Don't know why would it crash and burn like this considering that I wasn't installing anything. :/
Also some people suggested a while ago, to take out the battery and leave the phone alone for a few minutes, then try to boot again.

Had it sitting for approx. 4h with the battery removed. Put it back in and still no response what so ever. Power button doesn't do anything nor does plugging in a charger. Wasn't able to put in a charged battery because no one I know has this phone.
Not happy about this. And I'm pretty sure the tech support will just end up blaming the root...
Well, try to hold down the power button for at least 30 seconds while the battery is off. It works with notebooks. Other than that, no idea.
i guess mobo is dead, with roor you loose your warranty as well, so if mobo is realy dead you need to buy new phone, or try look on Ebay, but first sent it to htc just for diagnostic, we need to know what realy happend to your phone and after that look for advice

eehh..no.... if the motherboard is dead - so is the root, they won't know, so you still have your warranty.
My phone also randomly died on me once, it was rooted and S-OFF'd, sent it to htc and they repaired it for me. Don't worry about it just send it off. If it's dead it's dead.
in that case you are right, if mobo is realy dead so the root is dead too, yeah
sent it to htc and you will see
Heh encouraging replies.
Anyway, I don't have an official subsidiary of HTC in my country so I'll just bring it to the shop I bought it from. Not sure if they do diagnostics and repairs themselves or just forward it to HTC.
Since I've never gave a phone for repairs, what are your suggestions regarding the SD card? I assume it's fine if I just remove it and bring in just the phone itself. Most of my apps are installed on the card, but I guess I can kiss them goodbye at this point, right?

no, all HTC as that you give them is your phone and your battery. No SIM card, no SD, no charger/ cables. Just the phone itself.
they dont need your sdcard, you should give them just phone, battery and thats all, everything else leave home, i just sent my phone with battery to repair, simple
Bumping this thread in case somebody finds it and wants to know the outcome. I gave the phone for repairs and the conclusion was a broken motherboard which they simply replaced.
I have to admit, I was ready to buy a new phone and now that I have my old one back, it's a kinda weird feeling. I definitely do want to upgrade to Galaxy S II but it's still bloody expensive. I guess I'll just wait till the end of my warranty (April next year) for even better phones to hit the market and upgrade then...

HELP! My phone gets hot and restarts! Please look for more info inside!

Hello dear friends!
HTC let me down Kind of stupid phones indeed at least desire...
I have my phone for quite a time now, it is rooted with unrewoked, clockwork recovery and s-on. I flashed many different roms in the past and everything was brilliant. In a pas half-a-year or so I stayed with only one ROM - MIUI-Au. I kept updating it to the newer versions and so on and on. Never had any random reboot or something. At least maybe it was because of some strange app or something else. But now it started to reboot randomly and constantly!
Phone gets hot abit and it just reboots, and never comes to android homescreen again, until I put out the battery, hold it for few minutes, pop it back and then it boots. But as soon as start to play music, or run a game the phone gets hot abit and reboots again. and so on and on. I thought maybe it was a miui issue. So I tried to flash different roms, but guess what? None of the even boot! The main screen shows and with the same second it bootloops again and forever!... (
Even from recovery it sometimes reboots randomly. So i managed somehow to flash my miui back and it at least boots. But it is very unstable now, I barely can use my phone now
PLEASE WHO CAN HELP ME????
My warranty probably out of date, and my phone is rooted, I dont think HTC would accept it...
any thoughts? friends?
What have you set the CPU max to?
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda premium
Thank you for response! Appreciate, really!! I didn't set it, I left everything by default I think! Because as i said, i even tried flashing different roms, not only miui.
What else could be? By the way, with stock froyo rom If I remember correctly, sometimes it became extremely hot, but I didnt get any reboots from that. But now, it gets just a little bit hot and it seems that this causes the reboot...
Now what I just noticed, I get reboots even when the phone is idle. And it is not even warm!
If its not getting hot then I'm confused lol. It sounds like a actual hardware fault. Sorry I can't help with this one

try and get it taken back to stock if you dare.
The phone hasn't been out 2 years yet, which is how long the warranty is.
Thank you! But is there any possibility to fix it without HTC involvement? Maybe it is not hardware issue ? Can it be because phone is rooted and I flashed many roms to it ? I didnt try AOSP roms since reboots started, I will try to pop in Cyanogenmod or other and see if I will get reboots.
Would rerooting my phone and updating my recovery fix the problem?
and Note: yesterday I tried to S-OFF my phone, but I can't even do that with my unstable MIUI. It rebooted in the middle of the process..
I had a similar problem, apparently it's not uncommon on the early revisions. I sent mine to HTC and they replaced the mainboard.
Thank you for answer! But what if my phone is bought through a contractor?
Can just call HTC and ask the for repair? Or should I contact my contractor first ?
Just give them a call and they will try to help you out. I had a very good customer service experience with them when my desire had some issues.
They will require a proof of purchase though. If you managed to get the receipt from your "contractor" (I am unsure what you mean by a contractor), then there should be no problem.
Sorry for misleading word, I meant T-Mobile. I bought my phone under contract. I think I have a receipt. I even have whole box and stuff of the phone somewhere in my drawer.(just sayin ). So how is customer service of HTC? Poor, good ? I heard you need to tell them that you did a factory reset and that didn't help. Is that true. Also if I will unroot my phone, will they know it was rooted anyhow?
Ahhh....this overheating issue seems common. How they can release faulty phones?? No clue.
thanks for answers mates!
In Singapore, HTC service is really good. Phone was still under warranty.
It took me just one (real) call to confirm a repair order. The first call I was just checking to see what options were available to me.
The second call was an actual repair request. And the third call was me pestering them for a pickup date. heehee
In Singapore, repairs were done via courier. They picked it up and 1 working day later, they sent it back.
Naturally, you will probably need to impress upon them that you tried everything to fix your phone (which I hope you did which includes proving to yourself that it's not the ROMs fault).
You will definitely need to reset everything back to zero. In my case, I downloaded an RUU to totally reset everything back to STOCK, which included removing clockworkmod recovery. You WILL need to create a goldcard for this though so bear in mind that it's not exactly a case of a simple flashing procedure. At least not if you don't already have a goldcard.
Sorry if I overread it at some point, but you speculated at the beginning there could be some faulty app causing this, but you never meantioned performing a full wipe. Have you full wiped yet? Just to make sure it is indeed no software problem.
greets
Thank you for your answers. At the moment I have SuperNova classic ROM. ( 2.3.3 + Sense 2.1) But my phone crashes again and again, it is so annoying and causes me so much trouble.
I never tried a reset or unroot and return to original rom. Im just wondering now, would this help to remove or at least remove those reboots?
Today I was in my work and i was keeping my phone in my jeans pocket. it got hot as u would expect when keeping in pocket and suddenly it rebooten, then it went into a bootloop and started to bootloop 7 times in a row quickly. then again and again. It became very hot at that time.
For the interest, what exact hardware faults causes these reboots and why phone gets even hotter if you keep it on boot loop. If I keep phone cold, the rom usualy stays normal, without reboots. but as soon as I start using my phone, texting or calling for at least 5minutes of using it just reboots.
as I said- really annoying thing :S
I remember my happy times with miui, apps and no reboots Was fun!
cheers for helping!
I would give full wipe / factory reset a chance, and maybe RUU.
At least try it before sending phone to htc.
It is hardware problem, search forum. Fresh ROM without SD card, enabled WIFI and GPS, running G navigation, back of the phone is warm - restart after few minutes.
Maybe someone know how to read info form the phone right before reset? We could understand why the phone is reseting and hopefully add some patch.
Reboot-loop experience
Hey,
i had the same problem over the last few months: In the beginning my phone restarted only when it got hot, but it got worse over the last few weeks, in the end i was not able to use two apps at the same time (music and mytracks) or even to surf the internet longer than a few minutes. The problem did noticeably decrease when the phone was cool - tested by putting it on a fan or in the fridge. Yet, Skype was regularly killing it. As i really love my phone (and especially the AMOLED-Screen!) i did not want to resign. The battery cover contains some metal which is supposed to enhance heat dissipation - so i attached a little thermal pad to the hotter bottom of the phone to improve contact with the head spreader. Unfortunately it did not entirely fix the problem. Yes, it improved the situation a little, but it got even worse after a week or two - in the end i had to turn it in.
So i decided to take it to the Telekom-Shop. They were very kind and told me they would call the other day to confirm that the replacement would have been shipped. It took a few days longer, but i got a phone with the AMOLED-Screen! The employee said it was a used mainboard in a new case, completely refurbished. They only replaced the main unit, i kept the battery, sd-card, charger and so on. Now i have a working Desire again!

Samsung Galaxy Nexus Suddenly Stopped Working!

I was using the phone today and the screen suddenly locked up on me. It wouldn't respond to any button presses so I just did a battery pull to reset it. However, the phone won't turn back on now. It doesn't do anything, even when plugged into the charger, the phone doesn't even indicate that it's charging or anything at all. It's like it has been completely bricked.
It was completely stock, never unlocked it or rooted and never installed any custom rom or anything of that nature. I've only had the phone for a couple of months and I'm completely baffled as to what could have happened. It certainly wasn't anything that I did.
Any ideas? Or does anyone have any experience with this type of thing happening to their phone?
So I've left the battery out for over 30 minutes and it still won't turn on. I have an extended battery and the regulary battery that came with the phone and it won't turn on with either battery.
I have also tried the volume down and power button method and that doesn't do anything at all either.
Plugging the phone into the computer with the USB cable also does nothing.
How long have you had the phone. Did you buy it from a store?

Mine did the exact same thing! It was realy weird, however all i did was keep the power button pressed and it rebooted fine.

I hope that you have the warranty from the carrier!

I'm not sure about that one. I know I don't have insurance thru verizon but isn't there a manufacturer warranty? Like I could get a refurb from verizon instead of a brand new one?
I've never had a smartphone just stop working for no reason at all and I was never really into modding them so I thought I was safe. I guess I was wrong.
Really disappointed in Samsung right now. This is my first nexus device, not sure if I'll get another.. That's totally lame to have a crap product that just stops working for no reason. This is an unmodded phone, completely stock, never been dropped or anything of that sort. The only thing that I did was swap the regular battery out for the extended version.

I'd definitely go to Verizon with this. Most definitely manufacturer defect.
Hold down volume up and volume down and the power button. Does it boot into fast boot? Id say if it doesn't do anything then go ahead and call your carrier because its a faulty unit. You can also try plugging it in without a battery and then Inserting the battery. That also saw sends a power up signal to the device. Though I don't know if this trick works on a nexus three. This was an old trick to "jump start" a nexus one that had a faulty power button. But aside from all this, it sounds to me like you've got a faulty unit whether you get it running or not. Probably just need to swap it , sounds like something went pop.

Thanks for the tips, I tried the volume up, volume down, and power button method just now and it doesn't do anything. I Also just tried plugging it in and then putting the battery in and nothing as well.
The thing is, I don't have insurance thru Verizon (i.e. the $5 a month thing). Would going to them even benefit me at all? Do you know if they would offer a refurb or something?
The phone has a 1 year warranty on it. You shouldn't have to pay anything but you might just get a refurbished replacement.
I think I had the same thing happen to me a few days ago. However, I have the GSM version that I bought from amazon (thru a third party seller), so no warranty. Yeah, I know. Smart. Also, in my case, I unlocked the bootloader so I could flash the official yakju so I would get updates faster from google. Despite some lagginess with 4.0.2, it had been working great for a month+.
When mine crashed, all I did was press the back button and the screen went crazy and froze up, then started glitching and made a buzzing sound. I pulled the battery and tried a reboot. The Google logo would glitch and "ghost" and then the animation would start, but it was slower and choppy. After a few seconds, it froze and the screen was all low-rez looking and I could see what I can only describe as strange pixelation or scan lines (with a few of them moving from the top of the screen down to the bottom in a continuous loop). The only way to get it to stop was another battery pull.
I tried to use fastboot to get back in and reflash to the original firmware, but I kept getting a usb error (didn't have that when I first unlocked the bootloader using a mac, so not sure what the problem was). Now, the phone won't get passed the Google logo and just sits there for 30+ minutes without making any progress (that I can see). I keep trying to get back into the bootloader using fastboot, but now it won't even do that.
I've contacted Samsung/UK (as that's where mine originated), but don't think I will be getting any help based on their initial response. And, since my bootloader is unlocked, that probably voided the warranty anyway. I have no idea what happened, but it seems like some sort of combination of hardware/software problem. So, basically I'm screwed and out $700.

I'd say go contact Verizon and see what they say. If they can't help you out then you gotta contact Samsung and I believe (if my memory serves me right) all their products have a one year warrenty from the day the phone was used. So you should see what they have to say.
Similar thing happened to me, it rebooted itself, as it has been doing quite a bit of lately, and then wouldnt turn on no matter what I did.
Eventually just help the POWER and VOL DOWN button together to reboot, and it worked fine again. I'm completely stock wtf.

That's awful man. I've been reading more and more about random reboots happening with this phone and what not.. I just don't know what to think right now, I thought this was supposed to this beast of a phone and now after only a couple of months, it has completely stopped working for no apparent reason at all. Pretty lame, and this has definitely never happened to me before as I always take care of my phones. I just figured that if something were to happen to this phone, it would be from my own doing, just as it has been with every other phone that I've ever owned (ie from modding, from a drop, etc.). Samsung gets a thumbs down from me, I paid a lot of money to get this phone and now I'm going to be stuck with a refurb because they have put out a crap product.
As for you, I wouldn't even tell Samsung that you unlocked it. They probably won't be able to tell if you did or not since the phone won't boot properly. They should offer you a refurb, so you'll be in the same boat as me. I went into Verizon today and that's the best that they could do. I have to wait til Monday for it to come in the mail. I'm stuck without a phone til Monday.

Yeah, it's looking like this phone has been giving many people similar problems. Samsung must have let a bad batch slip out or something. I was completely stock as well, no unlock, no root, no custom rom, just a plain old basic user here and mine took a dump on me.
Mine does this about every other day and I have to pull the battery and restart, sorry to hear yours won't reboot. Ouch
