Ok Guys i struggled with this for a few days as o2 said they dont support the phone! Anyhow i managed to get it working via HTC HD2 settings - typical Mobile operators!
Please ensure that when entering O2 into the settings that the letter O is selected and not a zero.
2. Tap Settings
3. wireless & networks
4. mobile networks
5. Access point names
6. click menu add new
7. you dont need to fill in all the fields
8. Enter a name for the connection of O2 Mobile Web
9. Select modem type, choose Cellular Line (GPRS)
10. next
11. Enter the Access point name (APN) of mobile.o2.co.uk
12. Next
13. Enter the Username of o2web
14. Enter the password of password
15. click menu and save
Just to clarify, is this for 3G access in the UK? Contract or PAYG or both?
Thanks, because my O2 PAYG SIM will be arriving in time for me to use it with my Desire when it finally arrives...

Morning
I believe the APN will be
payandgo.o2.co.uk
for a PAYG Sim
It's reported that the Desire is coming to O2 on the 29th or April, hopefully they will be able to provide more support at that time.
I also had an issue with the Data Services settings with my O2 sim inserted. Each time I tried to connect via Wi-Fi to the Android marketplace, to log in you are required to sign in to your active Google account. I had one setup from long ago but I kept receiving an error stating that provisioning for Data Services was required and could not connect to the Google Server. I contacted O2 and stated that I was not able to automatically download O2 settings Data Services settings, they stated it was because they (O2) do not support this feature yet as they do not provide support the Desire, but they do provide automatic download of sim card settings for the HD2 atm.
I am in an area that has no 3G too.

Thanks for the info. I had got it from my other phone but forgot to update this thread...
When I stuck my O2 SIN in, it asked whether I was O2 monthly, PAYG or Tesco mobile and configured itself automatically. My SIM is only about a year old so if you have a really old SIM, it may be worth asking it to be swapped for a new one?

Are you using O2 PAYG (Prepay) and is it a 3G sim card?

Hey itsamac,
thanks for that handy bit of information, I have tried a newer sim card and now it seems to work with no problems and the data services are functioning as they should
I am currently in the process of transferring my current (old) number to a new sim card:

Nope on O2 Simplicity 20 and yes its a 3G card. I got last Easter.
Glad to hear you managed to sort it out.
can anyone confirm if o2 payg internet settings will work with the Desire or not?
I was told by o2 they didn't support the Desire on payg and so wouldn't be able to give me the settings.
Thanks
I'm on the o2 simplicity contract but my SIM card is 2G. They said they were sending me a new one but it's been over a week now. I'll give them a call today.
What can I expect different from my new 3G sim? Is it a faster connection?

Had my desire since Thursday April 1st, on T-Mobile, my first android phone so just getting to grips with it...
Today it won't connect to mobile network for data, I can make calls ok, just not browse web or use anything that requires a network connection like google maps or e-mail, there is no G or H or 3G in the menu bar, just a signal strength indicator, Mobile Network is enabled in settings btw, before you ask!
I still have my Touch Diamond 2 and the sim works fine in that for data so not a T-Mobile Issue I don't think, my O2 Sim (from Diamond 2) works fine in TD2 and not in Desire also...
Think it may have had it, was working fine Thursday to Today...
I've tried restoring to factory settings from the Privacy Menu entry and that has made no difference (incidentally, the restore from backup it offered me didn't appear to restore anything, no contacts etc carried over... so won't rely on that again either)
Is this anything typical for Android or have I just got a freak phone
Any help gratefully received or I'll have to get it swapped.
EDIT: Perhaps should point out that my Desire is not T-Mobile Branded/SIM Locked, it's from Carphone Warehouse, so is running unbranded HTC Rom (OTA Firmware update installed on first day within about 2 hours of getting phone)

Same thing happing to me all day, my phones also from CPW I cant get on the web or youtube or Google the Beeb or applications or anything else online All working ok since last week when I got it apart from it been very hit and miss conecting to anything online.
@popkid, T-mobile usually send mobile data & MMS settings by SMS as soon as you insert your SIm into a new phone. If this did not happen visit the T-mobile support site, there is a page where you can provide your mobile number and T-mobile will send you the settings.

My phone was bought from CPW on a T-Mobile contract, the sim I am using is a T-Mobile sim from my HDT HD2 which I had only 2 weeks ago, the sim was working fine in the HD2, the sim I received with the Desire was given to my Mam. I've been on the T-Mobile site and entered my number but when the choose your phones appears the HTC Desire is not there.

Settings were working just fine Thursday to Yesterday... it just stopped working for data overnight, got it to work for about 10 mins earlier after another factory reset, but then the H in menu bar disappeared again, O2 sim doesn't work for data in the Desire either... T-Mobile and O2 sims both work fine in my TD2, definitely seems to be a problem with the Desire itself or the ROM on it at least
On rebooting with new sim the desire asks for network and says it is configuring, but once you get to the social networking bit it says it can't connect to the network and to enable mobile data settings... (which are already enabled) I didn't get a text from T-Mobile when I first had phone btw.
Paul
Well it's all of a sudden started working for me, must just be a server problem I think, no doubt it will revert back to being very slow or not conecting again tomorrow
popkid:
I read somewhere, try to turn on then off the flight mode.
That could trigger the phone to activate the mobile network.
Otherwise, I suggest to give HTC a call.
Working... Finally
Tracked down the issue with mine... I think anyway, seems to be randomly deleting the APN info from the Mobile Network Settings, if I notice that I have no network and go to that page it is empty... reselect the network I'm on and it sorts itself out, no idea why they are being erased though!
Definitely not a server issue for me as the SIM works in my other phone when not working in desire...

Sorry - wrong post for thread.
hi,
i have a t mobile uk desire unlocked and debranded, i was using both t mobile and orange while in uk, i am in belgium now, i was using the uk sim but because of high roaming charge i changed my sim, i got base network sim, but everytime i turn on my phone it says limited service. anyone knows the problem? please help me.
i am using froyo( pays desire froyo sense v1.9).
That's strange. My new operator uses the BASE network and it works perfectly. However, since I've changed the sim card I get a sim card setting error during startup. Probably some phone settings that are automatically sent to BeNeLux Desires (Belgium Netherlands Luxembourg). But foreign devices need to configure it manually.
Hi everyone,
i recently picked up a G2 on a US trip and am currently trying to set it up to work on the AU vodafone network.
i have gone through the sim "unlock" process, so it should be free to accept any sim card. (it also doesnt prompt me for an unlock code anymore, so im assuming it worked)
when i put the vodafone sim card in the phone, it detects the sim (there is the sim folder in the menu, with the vodafone sim options) and when i use "*#*#4636#*#* i see that there is something in the signal strength (-97dBm 8 asu).
BUT
when i goto settings ->wireless & networks -> mobile networks -> network operators i get an error saying "error while searching for networks"
any ideas?
Shouldn't this be in the G2 forum, not the DZ one ?
Thread moved to G2 General.
I am very interested to know how everything works out for you when you get it resolved.
Im moving to Melbourne from San Francisco in 3 weeks and I am on the fence if I should get a Iphone 4 or a HTC g2
*currently own a HTC Evo ..sadly i have to sell it

Unfortunately we have the same issue as you but we haven't find a solution yet. So far i have figured out that the phone after unlocking cannot read properly CID and MNCMCC codes from sim.

5 days now i am trying for a solution. So far nothing to say. Just that users with same problem increase day by day. This might be good as htc will have to pay attention.
i dont know if its me, or if anyone else has noticed this, but if you change the band (auto - USA - Euro - Japan - Aus - Aus2)
then go and try to search for networks, the speed that the error comes up is different... its always the same error though....

hi, i guess i need to join this club .. any progress for the solution?
I'm using a G2 on Vodafone AU and having no problems at all ...
If I click search networks it sort of just stops immediately with VodafoneAU down the bottom.
The one issue I'm having is that numbers are formatted for US ... anyone know how I change this?
I'm not sure if this is a real long-shot but I had some strange problems with my old Vodafone sim in a HTC Magic. I ended up just going into a Vodafone store and asking for a new SIM and the problems vanished immediately. They give you a new SIM on the spot free so it may be worth a try?
Is your phone working unlocked with the tmobile sim? If it isn't you're got the problem a lot of people have been having with unlocking the G2.
Otherwise, try rebooting your phone with your AU sim search for networks automatically and enter your APN settings. Alternatively if it doesnt find networks, go to Vodafone to get a new sim card. I'm also on Vodafone and I'm not having any problems with my current Tmobile Phone (Cliq) and G2 coming in the mail
Fixed by rooting and gfree
Hi! I had this exact same problem: unlocked a T-mobile G2 bought in the US so that I could use it on Greece's Vodaphone network. After unlocking and trying to check for networks, it would just say "Error while searching for networks".
Solution: I found the solution here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Subsidy_Unlock.2C_SuperCID.2C_and_Radio_S-OFF which describes an extra security measure that was taken on these phones and why you get this error because of it. The fix, described in detail on that page, involves routing your phone and then running a program to change this security "feature".
I followed the directions on that wiki page and it worked perfectly! It now connects to my vodaphone network here, and can see other networks that are around.
Note that as this is altering the software on your phone, it probably voids any warranty. But, I'll say with my US t-mobile G2 it worked very smoothly.
Hope this gives some insight to any others having this problem!
Hey, I couldn't really find anything similar, so making a post. I have just moved to China and brought my HTC One X with me from the UK. It is a Vodafone contract phone, so it is unlocked but running the Vodafone brand software.
I have bought a China Unicom SIM card, of which calls and texts work fine, but there is no mobile data, it just says disconnected. When I go into the mobile data settings, it has the network operator down as China Unicom and network mode as GSM/WCDMA auto. When I put my Vodafone SIM back in there is also no connection.
It have checked the SIM in someones Chinese phone and it works fine.
I'm not really a phone person, I have never modded/rooted or done anything to change a phone, and my knowledge only goes so far, so hopefully someone can shed some light for me.

Done some quick fact check for this.
Not so sure did Vodafone UK offered HTC One X/XL (edeavoru / evita). However, both of them supporting 3G network frequency operate by China Unicom. Make sure your SIM card has access to their mobile network and have APN set correctly if they are wrong/undectable.

Setting the APN has worked, thank you, I thought I was going to have to buy a new phone
Check this
All I had to do to go to the Access Point Name ('APN') settings and change the Authentication Type from its default 'Not Set' to 'None'. After that, my internet is working fine.
It would appear this may be an issue common to a number of Chinese phones, so hopefully this will be of use to other people in the same situation.
It worked on my star N9599T (whats the difference Not Set and None? but it works!)
Hello, I bought and unlocked a HTC M8 but now I have put my sim in everything apart from there is no data connection, Wi Fi works but not data. When I go to Mobile Data in settings it says "disconnected" and when I go to APN it says " Access Point Name settings are not available for this user" Is this the problem ? Can anyone help figuring how to data connect ?
Thanks
Have you selected your network operator first.

This is one of those things that can be most easily solved by calling your operator. When I got my phone and put in the sim card, I had no data. I called O2 and they guy walked me through the setup. It might be a noob way to solve problems, but it definitely works.

It did not matter for me. I have an unlocked phone and a sim card from O2. O2 is providing me with the service, it's their job to make sure it works. My phone was brand new, so it would be safe to assume that there was nothing special about it. Also, here in Germany I can always return the sim card and void the contract within two weeks after buying it, so the network wants to keep me happy .
