hey!
just one short question that bothers me as a potential desire buyer:
is it possible to disable ALL camera sounds - i.e. sound when focusing as well as when taking the picture?
i'm asking because my former mobile (nokia 6220 classic) had an excellent camera but you could not get rid of the annoying sounds! (the official reason was "to protect other people's privacy")
i hope somebody can clearify that for me,
thanks in advance
superior89
yes you can.
Whilst in camera in the settings there is the option "shutter sound" on / off
im surprised that it is that easy to turn off. your old phone and many of mine dont have the option to turn it off because in some countries it is the law that a camera phone must make a shutter noise.
wikipedia said:
In South Korea and Japan, all camera phones sold in the country must make a clearly audible sound whenever a picture is taken: These laws are intended to reduce the number of up-skirt photos taken

yes but if they roll out the phone across several continents they may not want to make several different revisions of the camera app to comply with local area law.

I've had a bit more of a play with the device and as a previous Blackstone owner (Touch HD), there are some pretty noticeable differences in the UI which I'd thought I'd share for those who are interested and havn't yet got their own to play with.
Firstly, the start menu has now been totally replaced with a HTC version, which can be disabled it seems by browsing this forum, but TF3D offers no in-built method to disable it which is kind of annoying (see attached image).
Secondly, the TF3D menu style is extended into almost all programs. For example even in file explorer, opening the standard menu from the soft key shows a 'finger friendly enlarged menu' (see attached image).
Also the Bluetooth UI is completely different (see attached image).
Also a welcome change from the Blackstone is vibration feedback when using the on screen keyboard, and it also shows a button preview above the buttons when pressed (similar to the iPhone). Although this will be less useful since the device has a full QWERTY keyboard, but I'm assuming the Topaz (Diamond 2) has the same feature improvements, so it will be a welcome change for users of that device.

Could you load Skyfire and see how it performs? Someone else mentioned that Skyfire was slow and i got the feeling that he just didn't want to do it.
How is the redraw in Opera, and most importantly how is the battery life?
Great pics
Thanks!
What does it use for a notification light on the front? I can't really find one...
I wanna ask, is there a proximity sensor or no? Cuz when reading some specs, some say it does have one, some don't say anything. The HTC website doesn't mention anything either.. So?
The more pics I see of the it , the better it looks! Can't wait to get it in the States!

Can you clarify what you mean by redraw? Do you mean when you scroll around and have to wait for the page to be displayed in the newly visible area? As for battery life, no idea yet sorry. Havn't done much testing in that area.

There aew two LED's on the top of the unit on either side of the speaker. The one on the left seems to indicate charge with an orange LED and notifications with a flashing green LED. Not sure what the other LED does yet (See attached image).

I can confirm there is. If I make a call and hold the phone to my head, the screen dims, when I bring it back down it comes to life again. Pretty cool .
What I will add though it the CorePlayer movie speed seems to be a bit better than the Touch HD (well from my experience anyway). I have only tried one 350MB TV Episode so far, but it managed 90.34% in a benchmark with a framerate of 21.7. Although there wasnt a lot of 'action' in my test video so it might be worse with other videos.
3g?
does the phone have 3g but for the US, specifically AT&T??, ohh and nice phone can't wait to buy it.

This is probably the ambient light detector for automatic control of LCD brightness under varying light levels.
I haven't seen the keyboard quite that close up before. Looks like there are Caps and FN LEDs at the top.

There are two versions of the phone, one that supports 850MHz UMTS and one that does 900MHz UMTS.
My phone is the 900MHz version, which is what the networks in Australia use (EXCEPT for Telstra Next-G which is 850MHz in regional areas).
I 'THINK' the US uses the 850MHz UMTS band but since I don't live there, I can't really say for sure. But I do not know if the 850MHz version will be released at the same time.
would it be possible for you to take some pictures with the phone and some video so we can see the quality? Thanks!

Damn, I realized now that there is no front facing camera on HTC Desire.
So, no video conference as well
There is a special photo-reflective device that can be used for teleconferencing with this type of handset. I have one in my bathroom, but the name escapes me....
I have only ever used video conferencing once in my life just to see how it works, though I know there are many people who do use it.
Some have reported the "trackball" is actually a camera. So maybe the developers might somehow make it happen.

Hi
I just felt that with all the negative posts, i would add a positive one
I got mine today from Clove, all i can say is this phone is awesome.
Well done Google. ICS is a wonderful rebuild, not an update, a rebuild. I think people are forgetting this.
So everybody. What do you like about ICS?
I got a unknown phone call today and what made me smile was that ICS told me what location the area code was from automatically
What has put a smile on your face with ICS?

Yeah in the UK, I just tested it by deleting my home number form the phone, and then calling. It got it bang on. Very cool!
That's pretty cool, I hope the Verizon version does that (show the location of call). That's a welcome addition if it does.

It does the same on an AOSP build on the Nexus S - I received several calls for work today from unknown numbers and the Caller ID now shows the state the call is originating from (US).

I bought three G5 with 3GB or RAM for myself, wife and mother. The plus model was not available at the time here in Sweden.
All three of the phones have a very strange and in your face garbled metallic sound when filming video. This sound distortion makes video in places where there is natural background noise unbearable. Is there anyway to fix this problem? Am I the only one with this issue? Lost a lot of video of my newly born baby because of this sound issue =(
Thanks
same thing here, G5 3GB RAM and mic sounds like rubbish, seems like the same issue the Nexus 5 had, where the filter were too aggressive and instead ruined the sound. the solution was to completely disable the filter with some kind of patch.

Upload an example file to mega/yousendit/whatever, please - I'll examine it.
This is from the other day on my own phone. My wife has a zillion videos that sound the exact same way on her phone. This weird noise only shows up if there is background noise.
All three phones have this issues. All three phones are bought here in Sweden:
Moto G5
3GB RAM
16 GB ROM
64 GB SD card
Version: PVT1
SKU: XT1676
Build number: NPP25.137-15
Software Channel: reteu
Baseband Ver: M8937_8000.122.02.40R
Any clue on what this is and how to deal with it? Should I just return all three phones?

This is what Lenovo had to say. I returned my phones. Some of the others might do the same. Unfortunately for Lenovo Ericsson was going to buy a bunch of Thinkpad X1 Carbon laptops. They are freaking expensive. That is not going to happen now since Ericsson is afraid that Lenovo will not back up its products with fw updates.

Just finding this thread. I bought a G5 in Denmark a few weeks ago. I've noticed the same issue. I think it's either a over aggressive noise reduction scheme they've incorporated, or a result of low quality mp4 audio bitrate for recording. Probably a combination of these. Have you found a thread on Lenovo - Motorola that I can find more info about this on? Cheers,
Damn, I'm starting to evaluate the possibility of giving it back and get another one (obviously not Lenovo). Screw them, couldnt they just release a update for it? I record a lot of videos usually and this is really annoying...
Thanks for the update though
Hey, looked into it some more. I used the Cinema FV-5 app and found that by disabling the "Automatic Gain Control" of the microphone the sounds are recorded more clearly.
So, the metallic garbled sounds are most likely largely due to an overly aggressive AGC setting on the native camera app combined with whatever settings they have on audio conversion.
Wouldn't it be nice if Moto made an update to the camera app so that you could disable the automatic gain control if you wanted to....
I talked to Motorola Support and they told me they're already working on it, but they can't give me any date. At least I know it will be fixed at some point.
I am on day 1 of my G5 testing, and yes, I also experience this horrendous "Finding Nemo" underwater sound, caused by overly aggressive audio filtering and/or AGC. FIX IT LENOVO!

Don't abandon a potential ThinkPad purchase decision based on crappy consumer mobile phone product lines. The business-oriented ThinkPad laptops are superb - I have three ThinkPads here - R61, T430 and an R500, and as a service engineer who ONLY deals with quality equipment, let me tell you, you won't find better laptop hardware from ANY company. The "ThinkPad" range is a continuation from IBM's original line of ThinkPads, and they are the only laptops fully tested, approved, and signed off for use on NASA and ISS missions - that's how robust and dependable they are - the stuff of legends. The consumer <blah>Pad products are not worth a donkey turd, but the "ThinkPad" lines are hot stuff my friend, ANYONE worth their salt will back me up on this view, it's a given - they are built like tanks with carbon fibre composite, glass fibre reinforced plastic, and magnesium alloy construction - not the usual creaky, paper-thin plastic crap palmed off on the vanity market, aka consumers.

That's perfectly normal IMO. I have heard these similar sounds in Samsung flagships and other OEMs before at different places. Enjoy your device till the time it is under warranty and it doesn't has any adverse effect on the day to day device functionality.

Hey, not you not me but every A50 user is reporting this to samsung and it said that it just a sound from the lens which is used for autofocus. So nothing to worry about it ?
