Microsoft drops the "Series" part of Windows Phone 7. - Windows Phone 7 General

So there you have it: http://blogs.zdnet.com/cell-phones/...s+(ZDNet+All+Blogs)&utm_content=Google+Reader
Finally.
"Widnows Phone 7 phone" still sounds awful, though. And if you ask me, they should have named it "Windows Phone iPhone clone edition".

HOW DARE YOU?!
You forgot "FUGLY" and "Cheap-Ass" in the title.
Like so: "FUGLY Windows Phone Cheap-Ass iPhone Clone Edition".
There. Much closer to truth.

I actually changed the name of my WM blog some time ago in the same fashion. The Series Moniker IMHO just had to go.
Something else though: doesn;t this remind anyone of Palm / PalmSource in their worst days? Palm, PalmOne, Palm1, palm again and so on?

No more "Series" in the name!

Windows posted a Tweet saying that they decided to drop the "Series." Now it's just "Windows Phone 7"! I'm sure no one is complaining.

Still sounds awful, though.
Imagine you tell a friend "I have a Windows Phone 7 phone".
Oh yeah, I still don't like it. I'll probably end up calling it Winmo 7 anyway.
Too bad it isn't WinMo7...

just as retarded as I have an iphone phone.
No, cause then you would just say "I have an iPhone 3GS."
But you can't say "I have a Windows Phone 7".
You could say "I have a Windows Phone", but that doesn't tell enough, caose WM6.5 is very different from WP7. Thus, you would have to say "I have a Windows Phone 7 phone", which sounds ridiculous.
"I have an iPhone OS 3.1 phone" also sounds a lot better.
I've been calling it Windows Phone 7 so I like the name change. Honestly I think what they want you to say is I have a Windows Phone. Not including the rest. Or maybe you can say I have a Windows Phone 7 device?
Should have been like this from the beginning, in my opinion.
I like Winpho7
sounds vietnamese to me !!!

I will still say which version I have. Cause WM6.5 is (or better, was) good, WP7 is crap.
I'm not going to say "I have a Windows Phone". Luckily, most likely, I won't have one anymore soon.
Well if it's a 6.5 or lower device. I'd say I have a Windows Mobile Phone anyway. Just cause they want to change it to Windows Phone Classic doesn't mean I will. So I assume Windows Phone as meaning Windows Phone 7 or greater.
Windows Phone also stands for Windows Mobile phone.
Bah, it's a mess! Shows how screwed up their mobile division is...

Please don't. I think we need to hold that name for the product we were all looking forward to but that didn't get released (CE 6.0 based WinMo).

well, this isnt true for anything windows mobile/ phone.
the iphone is one. as in it's one hardware/ software setup. granted some of them are 3gs, some are 16 gb, some are 32, etc...
if you say you have a windows phone, what does that mean?
it could be a samsung "X" with windows phone 7 on it.
Or an HTC "X" with windows phone 7. you get my drift?
no other company makes the body for the iphone. the phone is its OS and the OS is the phone. which, in my opinion, sucks.
that's what I love about windows phone. i could still have a better phone than my neighbor even though its the same os.
i think?

"I have a Windows 7 Phone phone".
you have to say, i'm a prowd owner of a Microsoft Windows Phone 7 phone. But isn't it ironic that now the 'series' is left out, it even looks more like apple. apple also uses the word phone, and MS had to do the same! So it's more like wPhone?

Thank you for turning me off

I'm glad to announce that come this Sunday when the Captivate drops on AT&T I will be done with windows mobile 6.XX for good. Being able to test out the Android OS on my Tilt 2 put the dagger in the heart of Windows Mobile for me. I was skeptical at first, but now I believe that the Android OS is far superior compared to any other mobile OS. I'm sure the developers are working hard on a 100% port, but I'm tossing the Tilt 2, all thanks to a tease. Anyone else in the same boat I am?
EDIT*----
Well, crap, I didn't even see the "Goodbye Rhodium" thread. My bad.
Hells yeah, unfortunately I'm on the sprint network so I have to wait a little bit more. The only reason I wanted to make android work on the TP2 was the size of the phone (I think the Evo is just a little to big for my taste) and the physical keyboard.
Dont feel bad. There are many in your boat. I was pretty skeptical of android myself, but I've also been pretty attached to google for a few years now. It just made sense really. Winmo just isnt getting the support they need to make their product better it seems.

I was thinking the same thing as well, until i realized that even if we could use the camera, bluetooth, wifi and sound on the with android... it's just not that great.
I get all the options of android, plus the support and compatibility of windows.
mobileshell and mobilesense allowed me to completely drop the android os.
i dunno, i just hate to see people let go of their rhodiums. best damn phone Ive ever had and guarentee it will be for years to come.
enjoy android. sorry to see another winmo go...
I have agree even though I have moved on from the touch pro 2 the actual phone was amazing I was just gutted it was on windows mobile 6.5 which in my view didn't take advantage of the phone. I wish htc had released an android version of the tp2 rather than just making touch phones this year

Contemplating switching from iPhone to Lumia 900...

I've been on iOS for years. Ever since my first Jailbreak, unlock, and IPA modding experiences I have loved iDevices. I had Windows mobile in the past and couldn't stand it. After reading about people praising the new Windows phone I wonder what people who have experienced both OS's think. I'm deployed right now but read some articles in my free time about the Lumia 900 and thought that maybe it would be a good time to give Windows another shot when I get home.
So if you have a lot of experience with both OS's which do you prefer? I'm not a fan boy of iOS by any means, it's just what I'm used to after so long.
I realize this post is based a bit more on the OS but that's really what will make or break my decision on purchasing the Lumia 900.
well i use an ipad running ios5 and samsung focus. I personally prefer the interface and like the "metro" style for apps over ios. ios is simple but i think it is "stupid" easy interface while windows phone is simple but not "stupid easy". The os seems more dynamic as is the xbox interface is nice. One thing i like is i can choose themes, which are a colors you can choose and most apps and everyone will become that color. I think that is a neat feature. So i say get the nokia lumia 900 as it is one of the only phones that matches the iphones build quality, design and ease of use(all windows phones). With over 65k apps and counting i dont think there is much of an app problem.
I agree, iOS is about as user friendly as an operating system can get. It never fails to amaze me when someone asks me to help them use a feature on their iPhone or look at my phone and ask how I did whatever it is that caught their attention.
Windows mobile, in the past, just did not flow well and from the demos I've seen on recent phones they've taken care of that.
How well do the Lumias hold up with multiple apps running in the background?

Bull****. Thats what you could sayfor iOS before WP7 came out. And now we can say it for WP7, until something (new)better comes out.
Saying that OS is made the best way possible is stupid and short sighted.

Like any other modern phone OS; they don't.
Windows Phone supports background tasks like push mail, music, social networking etc. Applications are stopped when pushed to the background but they resume in a second or more - depends on the app.
Windows phone 7 disappoints me in these ways.
1. I feel confined. All my apps are not available.
2. multitasking fail(s). Apps close when put in the background. e.g. If you are navigating using Nokia's Drive app, and then check your email - the drive app closes and you lose your navigation.
3. home screen customization. not AS BAD as iOS, but you still are limited in what you can see / do from the homescreen. Live tiles are great, but the whole thing pales in comparison to what you can do with android.
Overall, I love the smoothness, intuitiveness, the look and feel, and especially the hardware of the lumia 800 (900 is likely to be the same), but I can't help but have a bad taste in my mouth after using it for a day.
if you are content with using iOS, you may find WP7 to be a very nice change. Coming from Android, I get tired of not being able to control and customize everything my phone does. Just my 2 cents! =)
It handles the backgrounds task just fine, it is just some apps dont suport multitasking ans you have to wait for them to reload but that is it. Also a large majority of apps are mango apps.

Yeah I think a lot of people don't understand that it is the app which needs to behave correctly in the new fake-multitasking environment. It's not M$'s fault that some apps still haven't implemented it properly.
Unicode Support
Does this version of Windows mobile with Nokia Lumia (I presume it is Windows Mango) support Unicode fonts... I am already fed up with seeing boxes for my Tamil language..
i am not sure

I've just spent the better part of 2 years with Android. Though I've also owned the venue pro and hd7, my primary phone was android. I've recently come back to windows phone. I have the lumia 710, waiting for the 900 release. Though I to get the confined feeling, what helps me get by is the windows phone just works. My last 3 androids were plagued by data connection and wifi issues. Rooting and custom rooms introduced their own issues. No matter what anyone said s, there are stability issues when rooting and Modding. Period! My current Droid is the bionic. In all its dual core glory, side by side with the 710, my little low end, cheap ass T-Mobile phone works like a beast beside the bionic. Ive given up my hacking and slashing days, for now. I think the 900 will be just fine.

I was just thinking about this this morning, about how I am looking forward to trying a windows phone, and guessing that it probably "just works".
Though I will say, I am trying an android custom ROM right now called "Ligux" - it was developed by Chinese... it has the most reliable wireless connections - Wifi/mobile/even bluetooth - than any other ROM I've tried. It's done right.

I doubt anyone can say, "it just works", and be able to say its a true statement. All electronics have issues in some way or form. From iPhone antenna gate, to data connections dropping, these forums are filled with issues people come across, in their particular world.
Custom roms are something else. Why custom roms? I suspect someone wanted to see just what open source could do, or rather, what one could do with open source. As problems cropped up, these 'cooks' started to see if they could fix something. And so on. I think now we're at a stage where its, look what I did. Custom rooms don't always mean better. In fact they usually aren't. But some, demonstrate what can be done...and its great to watch and play with. I walked into at&t this morning to pay a bill. It was galaxy note day. Its 5.1" of where will I put it. Its great to look at, but..I can't use it. There is no pocket stuffing this thing. He proceeded to tell me about android. I pulled out my bionic and talked with him. Then I pulled out my 710 and showed him a good alternative.
I'm giving up my bionic for the 900, if, it feels great in my hand. I know there are cool things the bionic can do. There are cool things the 900 can do too. I think the best thing to realize is, find those things you don't like as quickly as possible, and decide if you can live with them. If you can't, send them back. If you can, then, cool. Don't buy any phone based on a future patch, ability to jailbreak or root, or any app that might come out 'soon'. Buy the phone based on what you see and feel in your hand, right now. Take it home to try it out...that's $35 for 2 weeks. After 2 weeks, its 2 yrs or $350 to fix the mistake...
The 710 has shown me that nokia, even a low end nokia, with mango, can hang with some of the big boys. My friends at Microsoft tell me, what's on the horizon is even better. I can't wait.
When you go from iphone to Lumia you will lose your proprietary data connection. To some this is not an issue but to others it actually limits the ability of your phone.
You won't be walking in to a retail store and buying "the next coolest dock/speaker" as your phone has no such connector, is limited in design and highly limited in buyers.
I am on WP but everytime I see a new JBL speaker or some cool dock that works on the iphone I get bummed.
Today in the Nokia MWC they showed off their phone with ala a top data connection. So a nice desktop dock means I have to turn the phone upside down or connect some damn wire instead of just clicking in.

Yeah, true. But how many docks or speakers do you connect to during any day? For me, I connect to power and but during commute to the office. Then nothing until the ride home. Just don't have the opportunity to plug in much during a day.
But good thing to think about...

I love WP7, it's simply beautiful and works as you expect. Tried iOS, Android 4.0 and did not like them, used because I had to.
My only complain is the lack of separatre volume control for the music/system, which I hope is coming with Tango update.

Don't count on that for Tango. Tango appears to be a side way update for a different hardware set. Should not consider it as any type of upgrade or update for Mango. Though there will be bug fixes introduced first in Tango, before they get to Mango, ie, the MMS bug fix has already been announced as a Tango first release, before it hits others, I would not be looking at Tango to introduce new features on existing and new NON Tango hardware. For medium to Hi End hardware, the next great leap, I think, will be Apollo and beyond.

Why I cannot go back to iPhone or Andriod

Set the mood....
I own 2 Windows laptops, a Windows desktop, all running W7, a Macbook Pro, running SL, but the wife stole it, 2 Xboxs, a PS3, 1st gen and 3rd gen iPad, iPhone 2g, 3g, 3gs, 4gs, and 2 Samsung Focuses... I also own a Wii but i think the SNES got turn on more often.. Just to note I have played with a few Android tablets/phones.
I don't know why i had to post this but after countless times I cannot help but tell people about Window Phone 7.
I don't talk about speed, I don't want to talk about 94579204385 new features... My main point is search...
I understand that I am not the perfect human and that people have different feelings but the first time I use search on WP7 there was no going back... 1 button to find whatever I want around me on a device I carry with me 99.9% of the time... How can you beat that?
Before that I was all Apple... for mobile. I hate the idea of having to open a specific app for a specific purpose... and I honestly have to thank WP7 for showing me this as it was the first to merge this into a common area search built into a phone, again for me.
However, I cannot lie... well I can but I am choosing not too. Currently WP7 is lacking. I would not say it is missing a lot but I want more from it and do not want it to stagnate like WM or BB.
I love WP, I love iOS, but thanks to local search WP7 will always beat iOS right now in what I think is a functional use of a cell phone.
This is my little rant. I posted this in general to hope to push people to look at the simplicity of this feature. If you don't like it feel free to respond why. I am not here to defend my OPINION... please pay attention to caps... I am here to just tell people what I think.
Just to reiterate, kind of sad I have to but whatever, I DO NOT care about Microsoft vs Apple or vs Google as I do not see them as competition 90% of the time well maybe Google vs MS or Apple but whatever haha. I am telling people about 1 feature that I, KEY POINT HERE, believe sets apart WP7 in the mobile field.
Note I did not mention Android after the start.... sorry I played with 2.3 and 4.0 and lacked interest after my few encounters. On the same note, notice I did not bad mouth anyone so please keep the flames to a minimum.

Posts like this make me think WP should do just fine out there on the market (which it WILL)...but anyway yea, I agree...good post my friend!
I don't know where u live. But you're lucky search features really works
Bing map/local servies are crap in my country
ok so i'll start ranting about the problem with WP7, yes major problem.
First one, your WiFi will get disconnected whenever your phone is in sleep/locked mode( pressing the on/off button once. You might be thinking this is a trivial problem, well, I say no. The reason being that this is annoying to those using WhatsApp or any internet apps that needs to be on all the time. You might say you could switch the lock screen time-out to 0, well I'll say it's a waste of battery.
For the second problem, the phone really has a slight problem with wifi. 3 out of 10 times when I'm trying to connect WiFi, I couldn't get it to work, and yes i mean public WiFi like Mac Donalds and etc. My friend who is using IPhone or Android, even if there is a low signal in the connection, they can connect to the internet easily. Having said that, I might have been too fussy about this.
In conclusion, I would say they should solve the first problem I mentioned and I'm a bit disappointed at Microsoft. How long has it been since wp7 first come out. If they could solve this problem in the WP8 Apollo update and provided that older WP 7 phone will be getting this update, my opinion of WP OS will change.
End of rant.
@ DJ Krush: For the second problem, the phone really has a slight problem with wifi. 3 out of 10 times when I'm trying to connect WiFi, I couldn't get it to work, and yes i mean public WiFi like Mac Donalds and etc. My friend who is using IPhone or Android, even if there is a low signal in the connection, they can connect to the internet easily. This is obviously a problem with your handset/wi-fi signal and NOT the OS, I understand your rant but please don't assume every Windows Phone has this problem, I have never had any problems with any of my WP7 handsets in connecting to wi-fi.
If you want Wi-Fi to stay connected and are at home then plug in the mains charger and it will stay on, Admit it can be an inconvenience for some but in a world of unlimited data plans not everyone suffers as you do.

Having said that, I might have been too fussy about this.

As I had stated earlier, I might be fussy and all I'm stating is just my opinion or problems I encountered with/or the phone.
Mind if i ask what phone you're using? I'm currently using Nokia Lumia 710.
@ DJ Krush, Fair play as we all enjoy a rant, Am using a Nokia Lumia 900 and HTC Titan2, One is for work, On the Lumia 900 my wifi stays on whilst screen is locked, I have the 8773 Tango ROM which came pre-installed, Am not 100% sure if this is meant to happen but I only noticed it couple of days ago, Lets hope it is a function of the new update for all.

First one, your WiFi will get disconnected whenever your phone is in sleep/locked mode( pressing the on/off button once. You might be thinking this is a trivial problem, well, I say no. The reason being that this is annoying to those using WhatsApp or any internet apps that needs to be on all the time.

Yes for the millionth time we are aware. Every thread the wifi disconnect when sleep mafia sends a representative. This is a niche concern and Windows Phone is a young OS. It took iOS several iterations before it had a WiFi constantly on feature. Make a request to MSFT and they may include it soon.

My wifi connects flawlessly every time on public AND secure networks. Sounds like a handset problem my friend. Windows Phone does wifi just fine for the rest of us.

Yeah I don't think MSFT is trying to make inroads into the cheapskate market. I think they are leaving that for the low end Andriod phones.

Yeah, i think that microsoft isnt trying to get into any market, high end is reserved for iPhone, SGS3, HOX, and its already well known that MS is charity organisation that gives away their products. Just look at Nokia they are living of entry level symbian smartphones (because WP isnt selling enough to replace once market dominant symbian) and cheap S40 dumbphones.
LOL, biggest WP manufacturer is very interested in low end

The beta test is over I guess. I'm buying an iPhone.

I've been with you from the start Microsoft. I owned an early Windows Mobile 2003se device, and I loved it. The software was finicky, it crashed often but it was consistent and it was eons ahead of Palm. I was happy. I held on for as long as I could. But after the introduction of the iPhone, I couldn't hold on any longer. The software was going nowhere, and hardware was inferior and I had to move on. I always my fondness for the platform. Then Windows Phone 7 was introduced. It was new, it was clean, it was beautiful. But I had to hold off. Poor battery life, poor specs, high prices. This all changed with the Lumia 900. It was sleek, beautiful, had an amazing display, and it was right for me. So when my 5 year old iPhone died, I went out and bought one. I was happy. I did everything I asked it to and more. Then I heard the Apollo rumors. I was ecstatic! All WP7.5 devices would get WP8. All kinds of new features and worthwhile apps! I couldn't wait. Then this. Just when I was feeling comfortable with Windows Phone again, this new land that was different that iOS and Android that went against the grain, I found out it was much, much worse. I'm selling my Lumia 900 and buying an iPhone 4S. I'm not the first and I wont be the last. You let us believe everything. The little leaks and hints had our hopes up. I feel cheated, wronged, and above all, i'm leaving the platform for the last time. You've made it so i cant even look at my phone anymore without anger. GOOD JOB SH**SOFT, YOU DONE GOOFED UP THIS TIME.
ITS ONLY 2 MONTHS OLD.
You go get your Iphone 4S .............
I for one will keep my lumia 900.. simply because it does what it does best, and regardless of what microsoft does, nokia is keen to support its phone...
Apps coming from nokia
DLNA via NOKIA PLAY App
BETTERCAMERA with CAMERA EXTRA app
BETTER TRANSPORT with 2.1 update for the app
and lots of others,, list goes on and on

I'd hate to burst your bubble, that's all WP8. 7.8 is JUST the homescreen.
I have to agree with Johnson on this one. I have been with windows mobile OS's since before they were phones and to tell me my two month old device is unsupported is a slap in the face.
I too plan to look elsewhere. They waited just long enough for the rush to be over on the lumia/HTC and samsungs and no early adopters can't return their device ?!
Thanks for nothing A$$hats.
Damn, I was looking at getting a Lumia 900...guess not :/ But I wouldn't suggest getting a 4S, the new iPhone will be coming out in a few months and you would be kicking yourself for getting a 4S now and then the new one coming out.
Well Microsoft will support device up to 2 years, as I know. So if you don't looking for dual-core CPU, NFC and other some features, than there isn't problem to stay with Nokia Lumia 900 or other first gen devices. So what is point to buy iPhone 4s if new iPhone come out in fall (WP8 devices as well).

True! Worst part is that they had to know when releasing the 900 that there would be no upgrade. That, to me is deliberate lies. I would have still bought a WP device I would have simply waited a little longer or maybe I would have bought the 900 anyways ...knowing in advance would've been the right thing to do. I now expect Nokia to make this up to us 900 owners.
Honestly, how can one expect Nokia to do anything. They were poorly managed for too many years, then latched on to WP. At launch of their flagship 900 on a flagship carrier (ATT), the device was defective. The $100 rebate was welcomed by early adopters, but they burned through even more cash. In the background, MS is drumming up the app count. Nokia is hanging on for their lives -- firing another 10,000 last week. Stock is down to $2.50 a share. Nokia's major announcement on 6/18? A symbian device.
As for the token of appreciation -- a windows 8 start screen??? You gotta be kidding me. No mention of integrating Skype into the OS? No background operation of skype?
The lumia 900 is a beautiful device. Like others, have been with wm since the pocket loox 600... just windows mobile. MS is putting together a competitive and compelling package, but threw early supporters of WP7 under the bus of MS progress and Nokia survival.
Short of a fully functioning skype client, IE10, camera fix, and restoration of the network settings app, i too will be shopping for new hardware at the end of this year and for the first time, it may not be running on windows.

I'm with you bud... I've been using Microsoft's phone's since the first "Red E" development phone that ran Windows Smartphone 2002 and everything in between till now...
This is un-acceptable. I'm pissed...
I know developers who are pissed too, they've spent forever on some really cool "BIG" projects, 50% on the way to having finished products... And now they have no idea where they sit as far as development goes, etc...

They have already said the apps will go forward, just not backwards...... Still sucks nonetheless. =/
well, I'll just look at the bright side,,, there are some good apps coming for the Lumia on Friday, is a beautiful device, so I will keep it until WP8 devices come into market,,, there's always craigslist, so I will probably get around $180.00 for it by that time, minus let say $500.00 on a craigslist WP8 device I will end up paying $320.00 which is not bad for being out of contract... But selling the Lumia now to get an iPhone is ridiculousness.
Im pretty sure WP7 apps running on WP8 will be more of a compatibility sort of thing... And with the changes who knows when they might dump that ability and require an entire re write...
Sent from my Lumia 900 using Board Express
I think Zhariak may have been talking about software houses like sbsh, spb, WebIS, and others who built out a stable of useful, innovative applications for windows mobile and got left behind with WP7.

I believe its for 7.5 actually in the next coming weeks according to Nokia's Official Blog.
http://conversations.nokia.com/2012/06/20/new-nokia-apps-zynga-games-to-make-your-lumia-even-better/
Still, it still feels like lies with how the timing is. Any class action suits? (guess if there is Nokia couldn't pay it, thus putting them out, thus killing any updates for the Lumias, lol).

The home screen update still TBD according to @NokiaUS
Since I basically got the Lumia for free, after rebate, the only downer is that I will have to buy my Win 8 device at full retail, at about the same time that I'll be getting a Win 8 Tablet. Can you say hole in the wallet
It's like when I got my iPhone 4 loved it to death, then two months later iPhone 4S came out; better processor, Siri, etc.
Now I got my Nokia Lumia 900 not 2 days ago, fell in love with this phone, and I see this "No upgrade to Windows Phone 8" for this ****ing phone?
What the hell?!! I don't want on ****ty skin + extra glitter 7.8

Providers may offer that in the US. But it's not like that around the world...
No WP8, I too find it irratating, it makes me mad... considered even crying about it.. still thinking about it, I might have some time after 2:30 today. Would it make me switch to another platform?????? Why? Do you really think Apple is any different? Which phones does Siri work on? Across the board on all iPhones... um no.. is it some hardware issue?? Mic on a iPhone 3G not strong enough? Whatever the reason is. If you need a personal relationship with a computer and not people... buy only the latest iPhone (Then be ok with the idea The O/S is gonna change for the upcoming iPhone 5 and some new features will be iPhone 5 exclusive). I can't tell you how many Andriod phones out there DID NOT RECIEVE ICE CREAM SANDWICH... way too many, but the vast majority of people out there don't have a clue.
It sucks, it's wrong.. but lets not pretend Microsoft is some greedy software giant and Apple is some poor underdog that just takes such great care of their customers..... those days are gone!!! long gone, Apple is the company that was litterally sitting on a pile of money that they did not know what to do with. That is not an opinion, it's a fact... look it up, made headline news. Don't even get me started on Google, that company is like a data minning crack whore with a needle jammed in her track filled arm wipping her mouth from the last customer and asking for a kiss. Yeah I have an Andriod tablet and I find myself using it so little since I bought the lumia.
After writting this I realize, no need to cry... I am dissapointed in Microsoft, but it is what it is. As far others and my HD2... Who is anyone fooling????? Anyone on XDA could have made a mint on that baby. I ran WM, Andriod and WP7... sold it with WP7 for almost what I paid for it. Who knows maybe the Lumia will go the same way maybe not... I only paid $380 for it. If I get $200 for it when I sell it I got my Money's worth
