Keyboard accuracy - Desire General

I have been playing with the desire for a few hours and I find the keyboard a bit inaccurate, I always seem to get the character 1 space to the right of where I think I am touching.
Is there a way to calibrate the screen like on winmo, I am used to a touch screen and had the touch HD.
Thanks
Sully

Settings > Language & Keyboard > Touch Input > Text Input > Calibration Tool

or maybe you just need to get used to it

EroThraX that seems to have sorted it, I looked in ever menu but didn't see the option.
cez10 it was quiet a bit out as even careful selections got the wrong leter.
Thanks

[Theme] [PocketCM Keyboard] v1.11 [3/16/2009]

A PocketCM Keyboard .23+ WVGA theme I made for the large of finger so you can worry just about what you want to say instead of trying to spend all your time pecking at each key and getting it right.
Features:
Virtual D-Pad
Long press on any letter to get uppercase.
Long press on almost any key for quick access to similar symbols.
Shift button is caps lock.
I made every key as large (tall (with big layout and wide)) as possible.
Has larger room for correction / allowed mistakes than standard keyboard to allow for less pickiness on large screen (WVGA).
Landscape finally works.
English qwerty.
Optimized as much as possible (including all images) for speed and size of theme.
Hold "!" for "!! "
Hold "?" for "?? "
Hold "," for ".com"
Hold "$" for "€"
Only bugs / quirks I'm currently aware of:
Not sure of what the height for landscape should be. (If you are using a full screen app (such as PocketCM) the current height is great, otherwise..it takes up pretty much the whole screen. Easy to change. Go to settings.ini, and change the last value from 27p to something more like 23p.)
Correction currently will not go through when any symbol is entered. Suggestion will go through only when the following are pressed immediately after a word is entered
space
!
@
Based off Tene's dream theme, so looks are the same.
Credits to of course tene and and also zard for assistance with the virtual keys.
Credits also to MrHawaii of PPCGeeks for a few ideas.
UPDATE 3/16/2009 V1.11
Started over from scratch.
Removed "Hold space bar for ". " (period and double space)." temporarily until I hear further from Tene on how to make it work more correctly.
Made suggestion 19% more forgiving, allowing for 19% further displacement from correct key. Think that is the farthest I will go, though I can bump it up if requested.
Suggestion will currently (until I hear from tene on how to fix it) only go through on the following
space
!
@
UPDATE 3/11/2009 V1.1
Added:
Hold comma key for ".com"
Auto - double space inserted when period, exclamation mark, or question mark pressed.
Hold space bar for ". " (period and double space).
Fixed:
Correction now goes through even on ?!.,
(Isn't actually as blurry as it looks on the thumbnail)
PCMK can be found at pocketcm.com
Updated. Small fixes and enhancements. See OP.
Thanks!
Use it on my Touch HD and its working fine!

Good to hear thx. Just re-uploaded, realized there was a small typo in the settings file, causing the "hold "!" for "!! " not to function.

That really all the information you're gonna give?
Lets have some details
What your default language is, what your screens resolution is (I'm not familiar enough w/ the omnia), what options you have selected in pcmk, a screenshot of the problem, what version of pcmk you are using, etc..

Yep that's what's going to do it for you is just the height. I have it set for my device right now. The text box can't be moved / resized (except by tene), but if you lower the height of the whole keyboard then you should be good, I would recommend 24 or so.

Shift Key Graphics
Thanks .. this is a great theme!!
I see Shift key and up arrow key similar.. I just wanted to change shift key graphic to display "Sft" words in Image. I replaced shift.png in zip folder but it didnt work. How can I do this?

Hi Jim,
Thanks for such a great theme! It's by far my favorite.
I was just wondering if you have released a new version of it since V1.11?
I'm not sure if I've found a bug, but, I've noticed that when I use any kind of punctuation (period, question mark, etc) it seems to be added to the beginning of the last word entered. For example instead of "I am home now.", I get "I am home .now". Is this behavior by design, or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks!
ima noob. how do you get your skin to take affect?
Just copy the zip file into the PCM Keyboard folder in Program Files, then in PCM k\'s option choose my theme and then the suitable layout.

Screen alignment on Desire

Not sure if its a bit stupid question, but does Amoled screens need screen alignment as WinMo phones?
I had to align the screen on my Compact IV couple times, and now on Desire Im not always sure the touch is exactly recorded where it should be.
Hey. I'm not sure if they need calibration but I always miss things on my screen. it might just be that I'm used to a less sensitive screen and I'm making initial contact before I intend to click if that makes sense.
You can calibrate your keyboard if you go to settings/language & keyboard/touch input/text input/calibration tool. Im not sure if this calibrates your whole screen or just the keyboard app on it. Hope this helps.
There is no way to calibrate a capacitive touch screen. They don't need to be calibrated due to their design. The keyboar "calibration" is just so the keyboard can get used to the way you type for auto correction.
Hey guys,
I am new to android and HTC Desire so bear with me. I just got a Desire from Softbank (i am in japan) and there is no calibration options at all. Settings->Language and keyboard has two options: 1. Select locale (i can choose between Japanese and English); 2. iWnn IME (this i guess is the software keyboard for Japanese models).
I also feel like my touches are not registered where they should be (it might be because of my large, fleshy thumbs who knows) so i wanted to see if I can do something about it.
Is there a way to install other keyboards and calibrate them? are there any good free keyboards or is there a place i can install other HTC default keyboards from?
Thanks
slyn4ice,
You should have "touch input" in "language and keyboard", then from the former go to "text input" and then finally "calibration tool".
For other keyboards you can try the popular "swype"

Screen doesn't rotate

so i just got a tilt 2 today. and I can't get screen orientation to change whenever I would like it to. I have calibrated G-Sensor and it works for a few programs. But it doesn't work for the home screen. I put a registry editor on my phone and noticed that the gsensor only has like 5 programs for it. how can i go about fixing this? I've tried to do a few searches, but haven't been able to find quite what I'm looking for
You want to use this:
[APP] G-Config (Configurator for the new SensorSDK 4)
really simple to add programs to your rotation registry.
If you read through that thread There's a way to ad manilla/sense/touchflo3d.... whatever you call it as everyone calls it what they want to the list.
That said, you will find this REALLY annoying. I had it set to that back when I had my touch pro and after a day I got rid of it cause even if you tilt the phone slightly the phone rotated and yeah... just annoying as hell.
An alternative you can have is download RhodiumKBDControl. Search for it on google and you'll find it. You can program buttons on your phone to do certain things. Most people with the tilt2 reprogram their PTT button to do something like open the camera or rotate the screen or adjust the brightness. The cool thing about it is you can program it so a long press does one thing while a single press does another while a double or triple press does something different too. This works for ANY key on our phone.
You're better off setting it to rotate via the button because like said after a day or so you'll just be sick of it.

I use a program called Gyrator. Its awesome, and i have no problems with it.
You'll find it on the "software worth installing on the TP2" thread.
Good luck

use the registry editor and you can add the programs yourself. all you need to know is the class name and where the .exe is stored. i have a .reg back up file to add rotation to apps. i originally found it on here somewhere but ive added/removed a few things.
otherwise you can do it manually.. if u want to know how, tell me; No mch time to write, right now

[Q] [App Idea] Soft keyboard that only shows numbers while using physical keyboard

I am certainly no developer, but I was wondering if there was a way to make a soft keyboard that would only show a row of numbers while the physical keyboard is in use, but would show a normal full keyboard when only using the soft keyboard. While I love the physical keyboard on the G2, I do miss my G1's 5th row. The way I was thinking this could be implemented is the same way swiftkey works. While using the physical keyboard it still shows predicted words that you can click. What I am describing (possibly not very well) is exactly what swiftkey does, but a row of numbers instead of predicted text.
Is this possible? If something like this already exists I do apologize, I searched around but could not find anything like this. Thanks!
Also this should probably be in themes/apps. I meant to put it there, just clicked on the wrong thing, feel free to move it!

DUDE!!! GENIUS! Thats is a Grade A, #1, winner idea.
if you dont know how to, contact some1 who does....
+1 That is a great idea.
Well, I really wouldn't want a row of numbers to take away from my screen real-estate while I'm browsing the web.
BUT! The G2 does have those new quick keys on it which may come in handy? All we need to is preset one of the quick keys to pop up the numbers row when pressed, and hide it when pressed again.
I think this is a great idea, and would love to see if this could be done. I don't see why someone cant make this into a VERY SIMPLE APP FOR THE G2?

While I certainly don't dislike this idea, and I would totally use it if someone developed it this way, I would prefer it be implemented more like I described above for a couple of reasons.
1. You say you don't want a row of number blocking part of your screen while browsing the web. The numbers, if implemented like SwiftKey does their suggestive text, would only come up when you are in a text field.
2. I don't know, but I feel like using the quick keys would require root, which we don't (permanently) have yet.
3. There are several other phones out there that could benefit from an app like this, such as the droid, droid 2, mytouch slide, etc because they also have a "full" four row keyboard. If we used the quick keys, they wouldn't be able to take advantage of this
+1 to the list of people who think this is a great idea. One of the G2's significant shortcomings is that the keyboard is only 4 rows, which makes typing numbers very cumbersome. This would be a great solution to that problem.
I agree this would be a great idea. Also adding in the spell check bar would make my day. Even with the physical keyboard I sometimes hit the wrong letter or just can't spell a word.

I hope you realize that hitting the alt key twice in a row will put it in a "Alt-lock" mode, so to speak. This will allow you to type numbers without having to hit alt after each number. Of course, you'll have to hit alt one more time to switch back to regular letters.

its a good idea, but if you were to dedicate a key to it, it seems kinda pointless
I mean double-tap ALT will lock number keys. So it doesn't seem like that much of an issue.
great idea tho. How can we make it better?
Best idea since that app that fixed the white G1 backlit key issue lol. Finally have a pirpose for these dumb ass quick keys.
If someone did this right this could be the new swype... preloaded on all 4 row sliders.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using telepathy and unicorn dust!
i'm highly upset i never dove deeper into developing. this seems like something fairly simple to develop, for some1 who knows developing.
please do. this 4 row is killing me.
I would pay a couple bucks for this app, and it seems pretty simple. Someone please make it!
+1
love it. i think that could be a great app that i'd for sure use
I'd gladly pay for this. I really hope something comes of this thread.
I made these tonight.
G2NumberKeyboard shows a number row whenever the keyboard is open.
G2NumberToggleKeyboard shows/hides the number row whenever you press and hold the right shift key.
It works ok, but has a few bugs (for instance, sometimes the number row doesn't appear without sliding the screen closed/open, sometimes the number row stays on-screen after leaving the input box, etc).
Install the apk then enable in Settings -> Keyboard
Give it a try and let me know/give feedback.

[Q] Touch Response Settings

Does anyone know how to change the touch response settings?
The touch response right now requires me to be almost exactly accurate when using the virtual keyboard. I want to change this. It all started when I downloaded Launcher Pro. I know I can uninstall the app, but this app has super smooth scrolling and everything and I don't want to lose that.
It's not really an "issue" it's more like I want to just adjust the sensitivity of the touch screen.
Any light on this would help a lot.
Thanks!
